Mac mini occasionally overheats, goes to sleep itself

I have a Mac mini from late 2005.
For a couple months, the mini would occasionally turn the fan speed up incrementally and eventually, reach the max fan speed and just go to sleep by itself. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, loading music into iTunes or checking my email or anything else. The problem has been growing more frequent and has recently began to just instantly shut off instead of falling asleep. The Apple Hardware Test can't find any problems with it.
We've already gone through one logic board. Is this perhaps a sign we need another?
Jon

How is the ventilation around the mini? If it lacks enough air flow, it could cause the overheating. Carpeting or other soft materials around the bottom could cover the intake slots around the base and cause such overheating. Dust is also a possibility, of course.

  • Fans go on at full speed 1 min. after computer goes to sleep

Problem: Fans go to full speed 1 min. after it goes to sleep-mode. The fans will stay on until it wakes up from sleep-mode.
Computer: Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3, OS 10.4.9, 4.5 GB RAM. 2 HD, late 2005 version.
The problem happens every time I put it to sleep, even right after it has been turned on.
I have measured the CPU temp to be as low as 36-40C and it will still turn the fans on high speed when put to sleep.
I have reset the P-RAM and the SMU.
I have installed a fresh version of OS 10.4.9 on second drive, booted from it and it still turn the fans on 1 minute after it goes to sleep.
I have had all the RAM out beside the original RAM. I did an extended Apple Hardware test which passed.
    ...any ideas ?

After trying all that, it sounds like it's hardware-related--possible logic board--but try this yet.
Do an Open Firmware reset: Hold the CommandOption+OF keys during startup. At the '>' prompt type:
     >reset-nvram
     Return
      >set-defaults
     Return
      >reset-all
     Return
The reason the fans are taking off, is because the OS stops communicating with the logic board.

All services are down, smb, vnc, ssh too. And it not should be happen because this is a server, right?
Please, I need help with this problem!
    How to fix it?

    1.  Go to System Preferences.
    2.  Select Engery Saver
    3.  Slide the setting for Computer sleep to never.
    4.  Slide the setting for Display sleep to never (though I believe the display should be able to sleep without much issue.
    5.  Make sure the following are not selected:
    a.  Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible.
    b.  Allow power button to put the computer to sleep.
    6.  Make sure the following are selected:
    a.  Wake for network access
    b.  Start up automatically after a power failure
    c.  Restart automatically if the computer freezes.
    Good luck!

  • Mac Mini won't go to sleep using the "Apple" - Sleep command

I bought a new Mac Mini at the beginning of January. In the past few weeks we've had occasional trouble putting the computer to sleep using the "sleep" command from the Apple pull-down menu. Sometimes it takes several tries. Last night I finally selected shut down, then canceled the shut down, tried sleep again and it took. The computer seems to have no trouble going to sleep on its own when it's been idle for set time to sleep. And it has no trouble staying asleep until properly woken up. We have a USB 2.0 hub with a printer and a multi-function machine connected, as well as another printer.

My newer Mini takes about 30 seconds to go to sleep. Could it be yours just needs more time?
When mine was brand new, sleep kicked in almost immediately. I have no idea why this has changed.

  • Mac mini 2011 display going black

I just got my new core i7 + SSD 2011 Mac mini. I noticed during initialization of Lion and during a reinstall of Lion that my screen would flash to black for a second or two. A few days after installing Lion I still get this random flash a black a few times throughout my sessions. It usually only does it 2 or three times withing 10 minutes of turning on the the computer, then it seems to be fine. One time it flashed a few times and then the display went all distorted and pixelated. To fix it I ended up having to disconnect my 24" Cinema display and reconnect it. This whole display issue is really annoying.
I found this so I hope Apple is working to fix this issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15843631#15843631

Shutdown the Mini, turn off the display, disconnect and reconnect all of your power and display connections ensuring that they are fully seated and snug.
It could also just be that the display going to sleep and then rewaking.
    1. Go to: System Preference / Energy Saver and check to see if your Display Sleep slider didn't maybe get set to under 3 minutes.
    2. Go to: System Preferences / Exposé & Spaces / Exposé and see if there isn't a Hot Corner set to "Put Display to Sleep" that you pointer might be going to.

  • Mac Mini won't go to sleep anymore

Had my Mac mini for a while now..and its never had a problem automatically going to sleep (after 15 mins). Within the last few weeks it never sleeps on its own. I can manually cause it to sleep, which works fine.
Recent things done to this mac include:
    - installed magic mouse + driver update requested by Apple
    - normal OS updates (now at Snow L version 10.6.2)
    What I have tried:
    - restart computer
    - ensure nothing is running in background
Checked my syslog and found the following lines which were repeated at regular intervals that seem to occur when it was trying to go to sleep.

Several mention having solved your sleep problem by [using terminal and this command|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2078738]:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.cups.cupsd.plist
For a description of this command, other related commands, and it's function, see the thread I linked. Note that the posts on the linked thread are not the ones mentioning having fixed the sleep problem using the command.
Also, [PleaseSleep|http://www.dragonone.com/products/macosx/pleasesleep> have worked for some when other means of solving their problems could not be found.

  • My Mac mini shuts down instead of sleeping.

I've been leaving my brand-new Mac mini on, assuming it would go to sleep like my macBook or dear, departed iMac would.  I'm running OS 10.8.4, and I have the Energy Saver settings so the display goes to sleep after 15 minutes and the CPU sleeps after 1 hour.  Instead, I return to find it shut down, hard: no white LED (blinking or steady), it won't respond to keyboard, mouse clicks, or even the power button.  The only way I can get it back is to unplug the power cord, then do a full-up start.  I have a Belkin powered USB hub attached and a Firewire external HD for Time Machine.
I need to know before the warranty expires--is this a hardware issue?
I'll be really upset if all the migration and setup I just did was a waste of time because of a hardware defect.  I ultimately plan on making this a home theater PC, and if I can't rely on it to stay turned on, it'll be useless to me.

    1. Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    2. Click Schedule.. on the Energy Saver pane and make sure that you haven't accidently set it to Shut down at a given time.

  • Mac Mini doesn't wake from sleep, stays black.

I recently purchased a Mac Mini at the Apple store. I'm using an Apple bluetooth keyboard and trackpad. Problem is, when the mini goes to sleep, it won't wake back up. Nothing I can do apart from a hard restart by pressing the start button will wake the computer up. I don't know what to do to fix this. Is it something in settings?

  • Can't wake mini after it goes into sleep mode

Hi, My mac mini 2010 model will not wake from sleep mode. The computer also shuts down by itself if left on overnight.
    Any ideas?

Try following the following steps to reset your Mac mini's System Management Controller (SMC), the electronics on your logic board which control your computer's power state (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964):
    Shut down the Mac mini.
Unplug its power cord and wait 15 seconds.
    Reconnect and wait 5 seconds.
    Switch the Mac mini on.
If that does not solve the problem, there are a few possibilities:
    1) I know it's obvious, but have you checked that "Schedule..." in Energy Saver Preferences is not accidentally set to shut down?
    2) What is the power supply to the Mac mini's power adapter like? I have seen a few rare instances where power supply issues can cause the SMC to get confused in these cases. You could try using a known-good power supply and/or swapping to a less loaded power socket. I know it sounds unlikely, but I have seen at least one occasion where this solved strange sleep/wake behaviours of Minis.
    3) Finally, the worst case is that your logic board is faulty.
If you've done all of the above and have no luck, bring your Mac mini and its power adapter to your local Apple Authorised Service Provider or Apple Store for hardware diagnostics.

  • MAC crashes when it goes to sleep

    Hi,
I bought my MacBook Pro in early 2008, I haven't had any problems with it until now, but recently whenever the computer puts itself to sleep, the system crashes and I have to reboot again. The thing is, I keep on hearing this clicking noise on the top right hand corner of the keyboard. Sometimes, I have this problem, other times I don't. Can someone help me? Thanks

When sleeping the Power light flashes slowly. When you move the mouse/tap a key does it then go steady? If so and nothing is on screen see:

  • Mac Mini i7 After Yosemite update, sleep mode affecting internet connection

    Hi,
I got a Mac Mini i7 for July 2014 everything was awesome.  On Monday, October 27th 2014, I notice the port where my Mac Mini is connected, the light is amber colour.  When this happens there's no internet connection for the Mac Mini and affects the router has it slows the connection.  After doing the following:
    1. Turn off Modem for 20mins (hard reset)
    2. Turn off Router for 20mins (hard reset)-Router Netgear WNDR4000
    3. Set Service Order
    4. Change Ethernet Cable
    5. Renew the DHCP
I found out the when the Mac Mini goes to sleep mode thats when connections drops.  I test where i set it to 1min and voila the port is now amber colour.
I don't want to keep the Mac Mini i7 in "never" status has it decrease life.
Put hard disk to sleep when possible and Wake for network access are checked.
Of course before the update, everything was working fine.  Any ideas is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Retsel Adrec

    Re-installing Yosemite fixed this problem.
    Thanks.

  • Mac mini makes popping sounds when sleeping

I have a 2009 mac mini running eye tv with the analogue 3.5 output to a stereo system. Every time it sleeps it makes a regular popping sound - every 5 seconds or so... other than that everything works fine but it has just become annoying enough to post this.
Anyone else had this issue? Know of any fixes?
    Thanks

As an experiment, try turning off Airport and Bluetooth on the mini and see if the pop goes away. If it goes away, turn them back on one-at-a-time to see if one or the other makes a difference.
