Mac Mini ... OS X Bloated?

Hi all,
Just wondering .. picked up core duo mac mini yesterday with a 80 gb hard drive (get info says about 76mb total) and about 20gb of space is used before I installed anything.
This seems a bit high considering its about 7GB more than was installed with 10.4.5 on my iBook ...
What can I uninstall to give me more space ... and seeing as I'm new to MacOS (convert), what would you suggest is the best way to uninstall an app.

Mac Mini and Philips 32PF9966 LCD

Hi all, I've posted this on another thread but no one's replied yet,
hope I will get more attention here!
I just got a mac mini C2D and hooked it via DVI to my philips 32pf9966 flat tv HDTV ready. The panel has a DVI socket so I used a DVI cable. The mini automatically resolved to 720x1280 50 hz resolution, the TV would recognize the input as 720p but the characters are bloated and the top, bottom,left and right edges bleed off the screen. If I choose from the mac the 768 x 1024 resolution, the top and bottom edges are fine, the characters are perfectly readable, but I have black borders on the right and left sides. The TV recognizes an XGA input.
From my TV spec, I see that the supported resolutions are:

The 768x1366 is advertized as WXGA on the leaflet cover.
The question is: I have DisplayConfigX but I'm afraid of making some blunders playing around with the settings since there are no clear instructions on the site...I tried using "timing" to set it to 768x1366 but the program automatically switched it to 1368. Is this OK? If not how do I adjust it to 1366? After I click "install", will I be able to use the other configurations I already have in the Mac mini display options or will they be cancelled?
One last question: I'm in Italy, where allegedly the frequency should be 50 not 60Hz...Shall I go with 60 anyway?

Keeping my Mac Mini Optimized

Hi all, I was one of the early adaptors to the Mac Mini. I have a 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 machine running 512MB of RAM. I'm running MAC OS X 10.4.11.
It seems like over time, after numerous upgrades to the OS either automatically from Apple or when I purchased Tiger, in addition many automatic upgrades to Safari and MS Office, my machine seems to have become sluggish more frequently to where the "spinning beach ball" happens more frequently. I remember in the beginning, I could use the Mini for all things and leave it running for weeks without having a performance drop off that would require a restart. Now it seems like on a matter of a few days.
I will occasionally run the disk utility to verify & repair permissions, but I'm not sure if that helps. I do see, using the Activity Monitor, that the system memory gets pretty low where free memory is only 18 - 20 MB as I write.
Again, my overall usage has not changed dramatically since owning the Mini, so I'm not sure if the new versions of the OS, Safari, MS Office, etc. installed over the last two or three years just run "fatter" with perhaps more memory leak than the earlier versions.
Is there another way I should be optimizing my Mini on a regular basis? Do the new versions of the OS and apps along with their various upgrades create a situation where the original 512MB of memory is no longer adequate?
Any help would be appreciated.

Each version of OS X has wanted more memory and each has become both more efficient as the codebase has matured but also more power hungry as new features and abilities have been added. So the hardware reasons for your slowdown are that memory requirements have increased as have the CPU and graphics requirements. Additionally, depending on how you performed your upgrades, you may have unintentionally sabotaged your system a little. Finally, while you may think you aren't using your computer any differently than you used to, most Mac users over time do change their habits a little, running more programs at once rather than quitting one when starting another, and adding little utilities and plug-ins here and there.
If your slowdown is bugging you I'd recommend that you consider the following: purchase an external FW hard drive and install your OS and software on it. Don't copy or clone - perform a fresh install of your important stuff. Boot from this external drive and see how it feels. The FW drive is going to be a bit faster than the internal drive - you should notice that it starts up faster and that large programs like Word will too. The fresh OS and install of applications might also provide a bit of a boost. Since you are using Word (which is bloated) the additional memory would also be worth it. Chances are, for about $200 you'll see a modest improvement plus once you've fully moved into the external drive you'll be able to use the mini's internal drive for performing regular backups.
Or perhaps it is just time to look into buying a new/refurb computer?

Mac Mini sluggish when USB external drives connected

I'm not sure what's causing this issue, but I have a Late 2012 Mac Mini and when I plug in a USB 3.0 thumb drive or my WD My Book Studio (also USB 3.0), the mouse cursor is very sluggish and laggy. I will physically move around my mouse and the cursor is extremely slow to reflect such movements on the screen. It did it with an empty USB flash drive, so there's no indexing or anything else going on in the background. Ejecting the drive will not solve this issue until I physically remove the drive from the USB port. What's causing this and how do I fix it?

format the drives for MAC OSX extended journeled.....when you do that, is the problem still present?
Ive head of this before on WD drives (cant stand them) because they have some nasty bloat loaded onto them for installing them (no need for that EVER) on your computer.
when you insert the WD drive, does the drive come up AND ANOTHER icon saying something like "WD xxxx" (i recall its something like WD utility, or WD support) ???
Ive got nearly 100 hard drives, but wont own a WD, ....if i get a free one, i destroy anything on it with a erase and wipe with disk utility "format for mac osx extended journaled"
AS FOR YOUR STICK DRIVE,......are you sure its mac compatable??? most stick drives list that in the fine print, and mac owners buy a cheap stick drive that isnt 'kosher' with MAC

I bought a Mac Mini (May 2009) and this Mini-DVI to Video adapter with plans to use it to send an S-video signal to an analog TV. Though the sales staff at the Apple store said it should work, it does not. The graphics card apparently should support it, and it may be addressed with a future driver update, but as of now this does not work. I have used a mini-DVI to VGA adapter and monitor to verify that the port is working, and also verified that the S-video cable and TV input work. There are third party VGA to S-video/RCA adapters available so I plan to use one of those for my purposes. This is probably a 5-star product when used with the right Mac; however, Apple should have made it clear that having a mini-DVI port on your Mac is necessary but not sufficient for this to work - hence the 3 stars.

Install Windows 8.1 Pro on Mac Mini Late 2014

I'm trying to install Bootcamp on my Mac Mini. Windows reports that it cannot install or create a partition on the drive after formatting the BOOTCAMP partition as NTFS.
This is my setup:
1. Mac Mini Late 2014 with 2TB Fusion Drive.
2. Windows 8.1 Pro x64 full version ISO downloaded from Microsoft Store.
3. Sandisk Extreme Flash Drive (I have tried both 16GB and 64GB).
4. Bootcamp partition = 500GB.
5. Other USB devices plugged in: Corded USB Mouse and Apple Extended Keyboard (both of which are required to enter the serial number and navigate the installer window).
6. No additional storage devices of any kind are connected aside from the internal Fusion drive and the installer drive.
7. Booting from the EFI portion of the Bootcamp created Windows installer.
I have read that I should try using a USB 2 flash drive rather than a USB 3 flash drive, so I will try that next. I fail to understand how this could make any difference.
If you have any other tips, please let me know.
I have installed or helped other people install bootcamp many times over the course of the past 2 years. Every single time it has caused endless headaches and literally weeks of wasted time.
I have read endless posts on what is causing these problems. I will consider summarising these for anyone else having the same problems. Everyone has their theory so far about this Bootcamp nightmare, but so far there doesn't appear to be any one magic solution.
Apple's inability to address the issue suggests that the problem may be with the Windows installer. Perhaps Microsoft is deliberately causing this?
I suspect the two most likely causes of these issues are the downloaded ISO or the Thumb Drive.
If you have any better idea, please let me know.

The FAT32/NTFS partition is usually not adequate for an EFI install. You can delete the BCA-created partition and create a Disk Utility partition which is formatted as Free Space. Windows installers up to W8.1 do not have USB3 drivers. These are installed after Windows is installed and BC drivers are in place.

The requirements are pretty strict when installing Windows. Any deviations cause headaches and grief.

After Windows is fully installed and BC drivers are in place, log into Windows, right click on it and rename it on the Windows side. It cannot be renamed on the OSX side with diskutil renameVolume. Here is an example sequence. You cannot rename volume during the installation process.

How do I install Windows 8 on Mountain Lion (mac mini) 2010 Server using bootcamp with out Optical Drive?

I have a 2010 Mac Mini server running 10.8.4 (12E55). I just bought a brand new copy of Windows 8 from micrsoft. I have tried using boot camp and it will not recognize a burned DVD in my remote optical drive on my laptop running windows 7 or my macbook running Lion 10.7.5. I have had Microsoft on both of my computers remoted in for about 8 hours and they tried just about everything that I've tried.
Microsofts tech support has made me a bootable DVD and a bootable Flash Drive through remote desktop (awsome good job microsoft tech support). I have even tried formatting my mac mini's second 500GB hard drive to FAT32 using this whole disc as my windows partition. I know that when I go to install windows 8 it is going to reformat the drive to NTFS but all the articles that I've found, say this is what you have to do to get the drive formatted properly to get the ball rolling and get windows will fix it when it goes to install by reformatting to NTFS.
Ok so right now I have my second 500GB hdd on my mac mini formatted to FAT32 and I have tried to reboot holding my option key like I do on my mac book. If I want to boot to a different hdd on my macbook all I do is hold the OPTION key during start up and you get prompted to choose one of the bootable disc that is on your computer. Well if I put my USB drive which is bootable on my macbook into my macbook and do this right now its not showing up.
Now I just put the DVD that they made me in my macbook and it shows up as bootable disc. But the USB doesn't. (1 hour later) I just got microsft to remake the USB drive and am going to try that again so ta ta for now and I'll come back on to post to tell you if it works.

Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox are available from their respective sites. Read their installation instructions which explain how to install Windows.

Mac Mini '09 incompatible with older flat panel TV's?

I just bought a Mac Mini '09 and tried to hook it up to an old (2002) Sony Plasma 32" TV. I am using the mini-DVI to S-video/composite video adapter. I get a "no signal" response from the TV, indicating that the Mini and the TV are not communicating. My black '06 MacBook is able to successfully connect to the Sony TV using the exact same adapter and cable combination. The TV only has component video, s-video, and composite video inputs -- no digital inputs.
I spoke with an Apple Care person, and she and I agreed that there is likely a compatibility issue with the new Mac Mini's video card and older TV's. I have also seen it suggested that the new Mini's DVI port will not pass on an analog video signal. Is there any fix for this, either a driver or a cable adapter? Would one of the display manager programs (SwitchResX, etc.) be helpful? Do I need to get a new TV?

It sounds like the new Mac Mini has HDCP enabled (as it is on the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros).
This is a kind of copy protection, and will not allow HDCP protected content to be played on an analog source.
A tool like http://www.hdfury.com/ will take the HDCP stream, and convert it to an analog stream. It's perfectly legal.. and will extend the life of older TV's (manufactured before 2002).

Using Mac Mini and a 26" Samsung Tube TV with Apple DVI to Video Adapter

So upon first hooking this adapter up from my Mac Mini to my samsung 27" tube TV, it worked fine–but everything was massive in size. I started changing resolution sizes in the preferences panel and one of them set the screen flickering vertically, like a mismatch in refresh rates.
Anybody else have this issue and resolve it successfully? It obviously works, it was for me for the first couple minutes, but I can't figure out what sent it flickering–and how to resolve it.
The TV is connected VIA composite (RCA) cable from the adapter to the video-in port.

Try starting in Safe mode. That should get your screen back.

Mac mini,DVI to ADC adapter.

Looking at picking up the latest Mini to run logic on. I used to have an older Mac mini that I connected to the Apple studio display with a DVI to ADV adapter. Will I be able to get this display to work with a new Mini?

The new minis DON'T have a DVI out. There's an HDMI and there's T-Bolt. You can get adapters for either to VGA, DVI, HDMI and I've even seen RCA adapters. Apple probsably has HDMI-ADV or T-Bolt-ADV adapters too.
However you connect it, if you Google it long enough, you'll find an adapter to suit your needs.

I have a mac mini 1.42 ghz. I want to connect it to my sony 100hz trinitron TV with an dvi to s-video adapter. It doesn't work.
I also have a G5 1,6 ghz. At the back it has 2 connections for a screen. I use 1 connection for my studio display, the other one I use for my sony tv to watch movies etc with the dvi to svideo adapter and the svideo cable in the connector an the tv. It works fine with synchronize the screens.
Why doesn't the connector work on my mac mini to my tv??

Nevermind. Due this problem I bought a lcd tv a bit earlier then expected.
So my old tv left the building!!
Now I dont have the problem anymore.
No more s-video for me, bought another cable like it's supposed to be. Digital.

How to connect my 60gb IPOD and my Mac Mini

I have my trusty 60GB ipod (no video), with the older wide connector and the funny USB or whatever it is symbol looks like a "Y".

However... if the headphone/microphone combination has two 3.5mm jack plugs (pink and green) then the microphone output (pink) is "mic.level" - which is TOO QUIET for the audio input on a Mac, which is expecting the much stronger "line.level" signal strength.
Solutions: get a microphone pre-amplifier between the mic and the Mac (not cheap); or a different microphone with a USB interface.

New Mac Mini and Analog TV

I just bought a new March 2009 Mac Mini. I am trying to hook it up to and old analog TV. The TV has SVIDEO and RCA jacks. I purchased the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter only to find out it will not work with the new model. It seems the new model only outputs DVI-D and not DVI-I.
I am trying to hook up the mini-dvi to SVIDEO on the back of my TV and then for the audio connect them to the TV with RCA jacks. Is there any way to get the new mac mini to work with an analog TV?

When you cite "VGA converter to RCA" do you mean a little box that actually converts the signal down to RCA/composite, like this:

The crucial thing I'm waiting to find out is whether the new Minis provide ANY analog video signal to either of the video ports at all (which would seem to be the case, since VGA is analog, right?), or if the analog roadblock is simply caused by the currently available adaptors.

I am having keyboard problems when trying to boot up an OS (bootcamp on Mac Mini Server)

I recently tried using bootcamp on my new Mac Mini Server.
I uploaded a windows ISO Image perfectly the way it asked, Windows 7, I followed the correct steps, euqally divided one of the hard drives, and I was ready to actually set up the new Windows section of my computer. During this booting session, my dog came in the room with her ball and knocked the computer plug out of the socket. Now when I turn on the mac, the fan still works, the same Macintosh sound comes up, the screen turns that usual very bright gray, but it stays on that gray. After a minute or two, the screen turns black, with a blinking underline, as if it were confused to choose which operating system it has to boot.
My problem here is that I use a wireless keyboard (not by Apple) -- and I suppose that bluetooth syncronizes with the OS and not the computer system itself -- so my keyboard commands do not get recognized in order for me to navigate into Windows 7 or OS X Mountain Lion. I tried solving this problem by purchasing a brand-new USB keyboard (since Mac Mini Servers do not have the PS/2 entrance). I guess this new USB keyboard didn't work, I imagine, either because the USB slots on the machine are not recognized by the computer's internal system, only by the Operating Sysytems (which I hope isn't true), or that the mac had never used that USB Keyboard and wasn't going to be capable of using it until it had installed the necessary drivers, but without the OS running that would become impossible.
So my question is: Is there a way that I can connect a keyboard to the mac so I can continue installing my alternate Operating System? Is it maybe another problem all together?

It is starting to sound more like Bootcamp failed to install properly.
