Mac mini OS X Server vs without Server

May I ask a question regarding using the Mac mini w/server for everyday use? I thought I was getting more memory etc. for my money. 4GB vs 2GB so I purchase a refurbish with the following:

In the near future there will not be anymore Mac OS X Server. The client and server software will be combined in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion that should be released this summer. If you do not want server in Lion, just do not activate it. So unless you actually need two internal HDDs and no optical drive, I would get the client version. Then update the RAM buying matched pairs from Crucial or Other World Computing. Apple RAM is expensive. The Mid 2010 mini is upgradable to 8 GB. 2 x 4 GB matched pairs are available from those two sources for around US$100.
Of course everyone could really use two 500 GB, 7200 rpm HDDs, so you could get the Server and an ext HDD. The Apple Superdrive for the MacBook Air also is for the mini Server. The client version's choice of HDDs are 5400 rpm.

10.6.8 to 10.8.2 on mac mini no longer needed as a server

I have a ML capable mac mini server that I don't use as a server right now, it's basically a family machine with multiple users. I just turned off the server features under 10.6.8--now I am forced to move to the "cloud" I have MBP and imac that are running 10.8.2. I downloaded ML to the mini server, but if I am not going to use the server features, to I need to bother downloading os x server to put on top of it, or can I simply run it without the ML server download added?

Glad to have clarified things, I you do want to experiment though, it's nice to know that the new server application is no more expensive than 30 dollars - a huge contrast compared to Snow Leopard Server.

Mac Mini 10.8.2, OS X Server & Internet Sharing.

Here is my setup.
I recently bought a Mac Mini which is 10.8.2, I want it to be a Server so I got OS X server Mountain Lion,
I would configurate an internet sharing by the ethernet to be a Wifi HotSpot.
So in preferences manager--> sharing--> Internet sharing : From Ethernet ... Via Wifi.
I can access internet from the mac mini, but when i connect a Macbook Pro on the mac mini by wifi, i can't.
I use to have a Hotspot wifi at the same place in 10.6.8 and without OS X server, it worked well.
What is wrong ?

Os x 10.8 with server doesn't work well with internet sharing. I want to use my server with dual NIC's as a gateway but with no luck.

Intel Mac mini vs PowerMac Dual G5 storage server

I would like to setup a server to store family pictures, iTunes purchases and other media. Also I would like to use it as a backup for important documents and data.
I have a Intel Mac Mini 1.66 and a G5 PowerMac dual 1.8GHz.
I have purchased 4 400GB drives and I am trying to figure out the best solution for the money.
I would like to put the drives into external enclosures like OWC 2 drive FW800/FW400 and use the first pair as either RAID 0 or use the hardware spanning, and the 2nd pair as the backup.
Will this be too much for the FW400 bus of the Mac Mini, seeing I also use an EyeTV 500/200 solution to capture TV and burn DVDs. I will do video editing, iMovie, iPhoto stuff.
I would like to sell the G5, but would it make more sense to install 2 drives in the G5 and use 1 external enclosure with FW800 for the backup? I would like at least 1 external enclosure for the backup?
Any suggestion would help.

I have both of the systems to which you refer. I am typing to you on my G5 dual 2 ghz. I have an older G4 dual with 4 drives in it that I use for backup purposes, I do not use a fileserver at home in the sense of what you are talking about. My mini is my entertainment system with 1 TB of storage, my purchases are made on the G5 then transferred to the mini (giving me a backup of all purchases) and the G4 is used to back up the entire library from my mini (not as often as I should though! )
I know Wiebetech used to make an internal setup that expanded the G5's drive capacity from 2 to 4. While you said you wanted at least one external enclosure, that option would eliminate the need for an external case, another power cord, etc. so it may be worth looking into. I do not recall the name of the product but I know wiebetech manufactured it. Perhaps someone else knows the name or you could go to the company website. It is also possible in the G5 forum there is someone who owns the product as well.
As to which one to use, selling the G5 and having just a 2 drive or 4 drive enclosure hooked to the mini is most certainly a significant space saver over the G5 (not to mention not having to either have 2 separate machines with 2 monitors, keyboards or a KVM or VNC type setup) There are many good enclosures on the market, not just single but multiple drive enclosures which could be a better/smaller footprint/economical way to go vs. 4 individual enclosures (again, wiebetech is a noteworthy manufacturer of such items...no, I don't work for them
I too have eye tv hooked to the min as well as the 2 external drives I mentioned (250gb and 750gb) all via firewire. There should be no problem with the setup you mention as far as firewire is concerned and the mini. At least, not in my experience.

How many GHz for a mac mini to act as a media server?

We just bought a mac mini with 2.5 GHz to act as our media server. We wanted to be able to stream, which it handles nicely. But now our desktop has fallen to disrepair and I am tempted to take the 2.5 Ghz mac mini as our desktop and buy a cheaper mac mini for our server. Will this work? Thank you. Really appreciate anyone's input.

What is the oldest (Cheapest) Mac Mini you would use as iTunes server?

I want a Mac Mini to serve my iTunes media(music and 1080p videos) that's the extent of it. The Mini would connect to my flat screen and my audio reciever. I'd like to use an older Mini for cost savings. I've tried this Mac Mini...it was fine for 480p and 720p, but the 1080p was slow in loading:

Resetting a Mac mini to original factory settings without a disc.

I have a Mac mini that the previous owner did not erase all content. I was hoping to reset to factory settings without a disc. The on-line restore to factory settings seems to suggest that I need to enter an Apple ID. I have one, but I'm not the original owner. Will this still work even though I'm not the original owner?

I'm going to hijack this thread a little. I also have a 2012 Mac Mini that I wanted to wipe clean, I'm very confused because i keep getting different answers to these questions, especially at Apple Store
a) Purchased in Dec 2012, it did not come with disks, people keep saying "use the disks that came with it", what am I missing here ?
b) When I wipe it, does it go back to the original operating system (10.6 I think), or the latest I upgraded to (10.9.1) ?
c) Eventually, after it is wiped, it will have a new Apple ID, is this a problem (resale) ?
d) After it is wiped, it will not have any previous personal stuff (web, banking, settings, etc) ?
e) What is this process called, or how is it performed, so I can search intelligently online

Mac mini crashes when switching users without a display

Hello, i have this Problem on my Mac mini 5.3 with 10.6.8. I connect to the mac over vnc and when i want to switch the user the mac freeze. I got the Problem only when the Mac Mini hasnt got a display pluged in. When a Display is plugged in i can switch users over vnc. Can somebody help me??

Our 1 year old mini also crashed trying to watch a tv show from the internet - after about 5 minutes of the show it started automatically rebooting over and over again (10 + times). Now I can't get it to start up at all. We use this with our HDTV as an entertainment machine

Mac Mini file server with 10.5.8 and folder permissions

Our office has a Mac Mini we use as a file server. We each connect over our network with a common user. All of the folders we use are on the root. When one creates a subfolder, the permissions on the new folder are read only. One has to go on to the mini and reset the permissions rw- for 'everyone' then all is well. Is there a way to create a user which we would use to connect from our own mac that will be allowed to create folders with rw- permissions?

If you are using the Go menu "Connect to Server" and logging in with a generic Server User-name and password, the permissions of any files you create should be those of the Server User with which you logged in.
If you are just clicking on a sidebar item and using the Finder WITHOUT logging in as a unique User on the Server, the files you create will be owned by the Creator (not the generic Server User) and follow the Creator's permissions.
I find I am sometimes already connected as a guest, and the login dialog does not come up. If I want specific permissions on the Server, I need to eject the Server drive and Connect to Server again. This time I get the login dialog and can enter the username I desire.

Does the Superdrive work with Mac Mini w/out server?

I want to buy an external Superdrive for my old Mac Mini but I'm not sure it will work because of the information about it on the Apple website.
It read, "Compact and convenient, the MacBook Air SuperDrive connects to your MacBook Air computer or Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server."
What is meant by "a Snow Leopard server"? I have Snow Leopard on my Mac Mini but it's not connected to a server. It's a standalone computer in my home. Does that mean it won't be supported by a Mac Mini unless it is on a server?

If you're in the market for a new Mac mini, observe that the external SuperDrive is compatible with the newest Mac mini; in fact, it's offered as an option when you order one from Apple's site. The caveats linked to above are about Snow Leopard, which isn't supported on the newest machines — it won't even install without jumping through hoops.
If you want to save money by buying the older version, do bear in mind that the CPUs on the latest models are significantly faster — for comparison, the 2011 minis, while slightly slower, are in the same ballpark as the 2011 iMacs, wheras the fastest 2010 mini is slightly slower than the slowest "early 2009" iMac.
The new ones also have a Thunderbolt port.
If you do decide to go the eBay route and you're concerned about buying a broken Mac, look for one covered under the AppleCare Protection Plan (you can verify coverage by getting the serial number and checking here), as it's transferable and, given that the last model was released less than two years ago, it'll have at least a year of coverage left.
To be on the safe side, you should ensure the seller transfers the warranty with Apple — while they'll honor it regardless, a shady seller could request a pro-rated refund from Apple on the remaining AppleCare at any time after the sale, since they'll have proof of purchase and it'll still be in their name. Not sure how to do this, because I've never bought a Mac on eBay — the one time I tried several years ago, there seemed to be more scam artists than legitimate sellers (to be fair, I was in the market for a G5 tower when it was the current high-end and retailed for several thousand dollars).
Finally, factory refurbished 2010 minis with full Apple warranties appear on the Apple store site (at a discount) from time to time.
In case it isn't obvious, I'm in the market for a new mini myself.

Mac Mini with OSX server still OK?

HI All,
I was going to purchase the mac mini that was geared up to work best with OSX server however that option is now no longer available and the mac mini's have downgraded slightly in terms of quadcore processors and 2tb harddrives.
We run a small design studio, file sharing is becoming a large hinderance on workflow and I thought OSX server sounded like a good solution for someone with little knowledge of the area. We have four imacs, and three macbooks. Our team is growing fairly quick and that number should double next year.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Just get the latest mac mini, add some external storage with a Thunderbolt 2 connection and that setup will work great for filesharing.
You will get gigabit network speeds and since it's Thunderbolt 2 the mac mini will have no problem to serve those files across the network.
Make sure you get external storage with a decent RAID setup like a Promise Pegasus for instance, and invest in a good back-up solution.
Then clone your mac mini OSX Server setup daily towards the RAID and you're good to go!
Get a Mac Mini with an SSD or Fusion Drive and 16GB of RAM. That'll keep you going for the next couple of years easy!

Why does exchange server work for MSN Mail on iPad and not on Mac Mini?

My MSN Mail works great on my iPad and iPhone but will not work on my Mac Mini? I input the same server address but it will not connect. I've even tried m.hotmail.com, etc. but not joy.
Any ideas please?

At the moment the only way to do this between a Mac and iPad with Outlook/Hotmail would be if you used webmail on the Mac. Anything you do in webmail would be shown on the iPad and vice versa.
It used to be possible with the free GMail to use IMAP on the Mac and ActiveSync on the iPhone/iPad which would have been the sort of solution you are looking for. Now with the free GMail you have to use IMAP on the iPhone/iPad as well (ActiveSync is no longer available in the free GMail). IMAP would sync the changes still.
Unfortunately as IMAP is not available for Outlook.com/Hotmail you cannot do the samething as a workaround.
You could get a free GMail account and have it collect all your Hotmail messages, then you could use IMAP on both.

Can I run 4 super drives with my Mac Mini Server

I have Lion Server downloaded to my Mac Mini (set up as a TV server) and would like to be able to access the 4 USB Super Drive ports via other Mac Mini's in other rooms, 2 Apple TV's if possibe through Apple TV software and maybe Macbook Pro via AirPlay. Are these things possible. The Mac Mini Server is the Best Home television distribution network. Cheaper hardware and fast internet connection based on devices. The above is my goal.
My individual questions...
Can I place 4 Super Drives in the 4 USB slots and run them?
What is the most effiecent way to be able to server those drives on ONLY my Apple Network (other Mac Mini and 2 Apple TV's)
Can I access multiple drives at once from different devices on my Apple Network?
Can I restrict access to teen and child users based on the TV Rating displayed on DVD in Super Drive? (ex: iTunes recognizes CD's by times of songs and digital fingerprint when I input my Store bought CD or adds it to the Database if its a new title.)

Small fast network with Mac mini server and Promise Pegasus?

I have 7 Mac Pros and iMacs that need to be connected to the same storage. I'm doing non MPI-based numerical modeling so the transfer rates have to be fast but not infiniband fast. I'm considering a setup with a Promise Pegasus thunderbolt RAID connected to a Mac Mini running Lion server for Access controll/Roaming homer directories. The Mac Pros and iMacs would the be connected via 1Gb ethernet.
My question is where the bottlenecks in this setup would be. The server software/hardware? The network? What else am I forgetting

I assume you're looking at Mac mini because you've already run the numbers on Mac Pro and ruled it out. I wonder how many buyers are opting for Mac mini solely for those Promise Thunderbolt arrays.
I also assume that each of your users is currently using a single gigabit Ethernet port to connect to the LAN.
If these assumptions are accurate, then I think that a Mac mini will work as long as you and your users have appropriate expectations. The win from putting this server in place won't be networked storage that outperforms an internal SATA drive, although in bursts it probably can. The solution you've described is smart because it's centralized, securable and adds a layer of data protection (RAID).
You asked about bottlenecks. I can think of three, two of which you can work around now or in the near future. The first is Mac mini's slow internal hard drive(s). You'll have a solution in hand: Boot Mac mini from the array. Some consider that to be a controversial choice, but you shouldn't spend extra for the Mac mini server with dual 7200 RPM drives. The less costly Core i7 configure-to-order upgrade will give you a bigger boost.
Booting from the array also protects you from the most likely "repair" scenario for Mac mini: Swapping out your entire machine.
The second issue is Mac mini's lack of an expansion bus. If you get more users or start using apps that demand more from the LAN, you might want to fire up additional gigabit Ethernet ports. Mac mini has just one. At present, the only way to add a gigabit port is with a Thunderbolt PCIe bus expander. Early next year, there should be more options that connect directly or via an intermediate bus like ExpressCard/34 or USB 3.0.
The one limitation you're powerless to work around is RAM. Mac mini tops out at 8 GB. That meets requirements, but it will be tight if you try to use Mac mini as a client and a server. I deploy them headless so no one's tempted to use the console.
You can improve your odds that gigabit will cut it by using heavy, short Cat6 cables and a switch dedicated to the Mac LAN. Use Mac mini's built-in Wi-Fi to keep Remote Desktop and other low-priority traffic off the wire.

Mac mini server install DVD - install on a different computer

I bought a Mac mini server (= a Mac mini with a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server pre-installed) a while ago. I am planning to install Lion Server on the same Mac Mini and get rid of the Snow Leopard installation DVD. My question is, can the DVD that came with the Mac mini be used to install the server OS on a different computer (another Mac mini or iMac etc.)? or is it somehow tied to the original Mac mini?

Install discs included with a Mac are only able to install on the same model Mac. However historically Mac OS X Server install discs are not limited in the same way. (Remember there is no such thing as a Lion install disc.)
The server install disc is more typically limited in being an older version of Mac OS X e.g. 10.6.3 and thus not able to boot and install on the latest model Macs. It is however possible to boot and install on an older Mac e.g. an older Mac mini but install on to an external hard disk which might even be the internal hard disk of another Mac connected via FireWire Target Disk Mode. You can then run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server Combo update to update it to the latest Snow Leopard Server version which will then boot successfully on all the current Macs including those that have only ever shipped with Lion.
Since a DVD disk takes very little space I would suggest you don't throw it away.
