Mac Mini..PC for Mac??

Hello all,
I've had my iMac for about 3 years now, and have been considering updating. I will never get rid of this machine as it is my digital media center, but have been considering buying a new Mac mini 1.5 GHz Intel Core Solo. The idea of this is to phase out my Sony Vio laptop. I work at an architecture firm and run CAD based programs such as, Achitectural Desktop and Auto Cad. If I get the Mac mini and load PC for Mac, will it run my CAD software smoothly? Also is PC for Mac the best software to buy for running Windows on a Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

The Mini's base configuration has insufficient RAM for moderate multitasking, much less CAD. By the time you max out the Mini with 2GB RAM, and a roomier hard disk, and the Core Duo (which i'd reccomend over the Solo in your case), you're approaching the price of the base line iMac 17". You may want to consider the iMac instead. Better CPU, better GPU w/ more memory, bigger/faster hard disk, and a Superdrive.
I bought my Core Solo as a "test platform" for dual booting Windows and testing the Intel Mac waters. My only complaint so far is the woefully inadequate RAM config on the base Mini models.

hi, we are using mac mini's for our developement purpose. connecting the same through using Real VNC. Mac mini's are late 2009 and 2010. Now we have upgraded them to 10.8.5. after upgrading having display issues after launching the simulators, we are unable to view the icons we need to move the simulator (into different places) to view the icons.
Also we are having Mac book pro's (Late 2009 & 2010) after upgrading them to 10.8.5. Unable to launch the mac, getting only white screen with apple icon.
Let me know is there any specific Hardware (Graphic Cards) we need to use for the same.
Please provide me the early solutions.
    Regards,
    Suresh.

    Hi, try this first...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Mac Mini Wake for Network Access Not working after upgrade

After upgrading to the latest OS (10.8) the WOL fuction is not work.  This used to work before the release.  i could see the Mac mini on my mac book pro even when it was asleep.  Once I click on it under the shared resources area I could see the Mac wake up.  Now as soon as it goes to sleep it drops from my mac book pro.  I am connected via WIFI but also tried via LAN.  Same result. Any ideas?  Seems to be a bug as I google this issue it appears to be impacting many people.

Same issue here after updating my iMac to OS X 10.8. I can't use Logmein, wireless syncing to iTunes from my iOS devices, or my Logitech Server software for my Logitech Radio. Once the computer goes to sleep, it is invisible to the rest of the network. This all worked fine on 10.4-10.7. I have double-checked that Wake on Network Activity is turned on. I have disabled all networking interfaces except Ethernet. Nothing seems to help.

  • Modify Mac Mini case for access?

I know it sounds extreme, but has anyone modified the Mac Mini case for easy access to the hard drive? I am considering buying a Mac Mini Server, but don't want to do Mac-surgery anytime I may need or want to swap hard drives. I watched this tear down video and thought it would be so much easier it had an access door on the top or no case at all. What do you guys think?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZy0wPniqqo

I can't imagine how you could modify the case enough to make it easy to access the drives and not just in essence destroy the case. I'd strongly suggest either using external Firewire drives or getting a Mac Pro.
    Regards.

  • Is 2012 mac mini good for audio production?

is 2012 mac mini good for audio production. Take in mind that I am a novice, but that really does not matter, I want to get the right product if that is an imac instead than so be it.

It depends on the sort of audio production you'll be doing. If you're going to be working with only stereo content or just a few tracks, in GarageBand for instance, a 2012 Mac mini would probably suffice, though you'll probably want to max out the RAM in the system. If you're going to be working with many tracks simultaneously with effects, EQ, etc on many, for instance with Logic Pro X with a number of plugins going, then a Mac mini probably won't do the job. In that case you'd probably want a top-end iMac or perhaps even a Mac Pro (the new model of which should be released sometime this month).
I'd suggest that you decide on the software you'll want to run, and then ask in forums related to that software what sort of system configuration users are finding to be adequate.

  • The volume keys on my Logitech K760 wireless keyboard do not work with my 2.3 GHz, Intel Core i5 Mac mini which runs Mac OS X 10.7.4. Anyone know how to correct this without having to re-code firmware?

My first post to the Apple Support Community so it looks like all I wanted to know is covered in the title. The research I have done led me to solutions that I am not comfortable trying for fear of irreparably damaging my keyboard and/or Mac mini. Does anyone have a simpler solution? Please? Hellooooo?
Just in case the title is too long to show, I have re-pasted here:

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No, I do not believe it is possible to use the older iMac as a display screen for the mine. This does not mean that it hasn't been done, but just not to my knowledge.

i want to downgrade my 2011 mac mini server to mac os x i have the disks but the mini willl not reboot the apple changing to a circle with a line please help-

bpruse,  I may be completely off-track for your issue, but I had a similar situation where I wanted to downgrade a Mac Pro from Server to plain OS X and it would not boot from the OS X install disk.
I was attempting to use a full-install OS X.6.x disc with an earlier SL version than that which originally came installed on the Mac Pro.  After two or three hours of fiddling, I figured it out and used the discs that came with the system.
However, I don't know how that would work in your case if this is the mini server-version.  I'm sure the disks would only have Server on them.  Worse-case scenario, find out which X.6.x the OEM disc is installing and get an OS X disc with a new installer.
    HTH.

  • Transferring OS X Server From Mac Mini Server To Mac Pro

    Hi,
A few months ago, I bought a Mac Mini Server for my business. We've now got a Mac Pro that we'd love to install OS X Server onto, and then install Snow Leopard onto the Mac Mini Server (thus making it, in effect, an optical drive-less Mac Mini) for a few reasons I won't go into here.
I thought it might be as simple as to put the OS X Server disc into the Mac Pro, install and then migrate the settings across, and then format the Mac Mini Server and install Snow Leopard. But when I put the CD into the Mac Pro, I got a message saying that OS X Couldn't Be Installed On This Computer.
Is the OS X Server disc that comes with the Mac Mini Server tied to the Mac Mini itself? Can it not be transferred? Even if we retain ownership of both machines, and have a valid license for Snow Leopard to be installed onto the Mac Mini Server? Or is this error message relating to something else?
    Thanks in advance,
    phil

Try to put the MacPro in FireWire target disk mode and install the OS, or take the disk out and using an enclosure install. Do not clone, it will probably fail due to hardware differences. Try new installation not being plugged in the same network as the mini, setup DNS and transfer OD archive and other settings from the mini.

  • Using a Mac Mini with my Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro and a Mac Mini, but only one monitor and one keyboard. Can I hook up the Mac Mini so it will appear on the monitor (like another hard drive) when I am using the Mac Pro? I would like to use the Mac Mini strictly as a storage device and be able to drag files from the Mac Pro to the Mac Mini.

Put the Mac Mini in Target Disk Mode (start while holding "T") and connect it to the Mac Pro with a FireWire cable. If you want it to always start in Target Disk Mode:

It seems that Mac-mini Tiger is as it should be and the firewire cable is OK.  Something about the Migration Assistant is being missed, but I have no idea what it is.
    Help

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

  • Is the mac mini server the same hardware as the other mac minis (except for the quad core i7 and dual hard drives) with different software or is it configured differently?

I have a mac mini with an i7 dual core processor. It is perceptably slower than my macbook pro with a quad core i7. Does the mac mini server have the same hardware configuation as the regular mac mini with server software or is the hardware different (aside from the i7 quad core and dual hard drives)? I want a mini with a quad core i7...

Your assumption is correct.  The server does however only
have the Intel HD3000 graphics like the base model with
no option, at this time, for the discrete graphics chip.  So,
depending on what you are using it for, that could be a deal
breaker.  Remember that your MBP does have a discrete
    graphics chip.
I have a 2011 Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt display
that gets used as an engineering workstation and general
personal use (some photo editing, LP restoraton, general
internet browsing).  You simply just not enable any of the
server services.  I find the combination to work quite well
for my purposes.  I also have a 13" 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro
which is pretty much strictly for work.  As far as CPU
power it is pretty much equivelent to your Mini.  For the most
part I find the Mini does outperfom my MBP.  I heavily use
Parallels and Windows7 virtual machines, so the more cores
    the better.
So, If you do a lot of CPU intensive stuff that is multithreaded,
the Server may help.  If it is graphics intensive and your software
heavily leaverages the GPU, you may actually take a hit on
    performance.

  • Mac mini support for Samsung Syncmaster 244T

I recently purchased a Mac mini 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 and wanted to connect it to a Samnsung Syncmaster 244T monitor. I connected it using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter but it would not display. I also attempted to use the HDMI to DVI adapter included with the Mac but to no avail. Any recommendations?

Try resetting the Mac Mini's > NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
