Hmmm, what all is connected to the Mini?
Also...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

My mac mini is freezing with flashing question mark. Pl help
Hello,
Hi , and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there from step 3 onard I think -
At every startup, Mac mini desktop freezes for 10 mins before I can start any program, what should I do? The mouse cursor can move around, but the icons are not responding at all. Can't click on anything during the "freezing" period, and this "freezing" happened with every startup. Waking up from sleep mode is OK. Also the systems crashed frequently with any flash-player required pages in web browser. What's wrong??
Hey,
Repair Disk permisions...
Applications > Utilities > Disk utility > Select your Mac OS Hard Drive on the left > Click Repair Permissions.

The numeral part of my keyboard causes my mac mini to freeze when using the 0 - 9 keys
The numeral part of my keyboard causes my mac mini to freeze when using the 0 - 9 keys.. I have to restart to continue.
Does it have to do with the disk utility?
I already did the disc repair jobOpen System Preferences - Universal Access and check whether 'Mouse Keys' are activated.
If so, then deactivate them. They could be the cause of your problem.

Mac Mini constantly freezes, Wont boot from install disc.
About 6 months ago my mac mini started freezing (getting that grey screen prompting you to hold the power button until it turns off) it did this every few hours or so. Eventually i got tired of this and have tried multiple times to wipe the HDD and reinstall snow leopard. I try and boot via the install disc but it just spins at the apple logo. I also tried reinstalling windows 7 on the bootcamp partition but again it gives me any error. I fear the hardrive might be totally busted. Any help?

See if DU works this way... 10.7 or greater, reboot holding CMD+r keys & use Disk Utility from there for Repairing Drive.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode, like stalls, beachballs, etc...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts? -
Mac mini 2012 freezing on wake from sleep
2012 Mac Mini 2.3 i7, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD.
I'm having a problem which has only manifested itself this past week where one of two scenarios occurs;
1) During normal use the computer sort of stalls, the curser turns into the spinning ball and the keyboard becomes unresponsive. Whatever apps are open freeze their current activity and there is nothing I can do but shutdown the mini using the power button.
2) If 1) above does not occur and the computer is left for a period of time it it set for display sleep, when it is next used mad woken from sleep the desktop appears on the monitor and gaskin everything is completely unresponsive with any apps running frozen at the point that the computer stalled while asleep.
I have the mini setup as a home PC and iTunes media server. It is left on 24/7 with the computer set never to sleep, screensaver after 10 mins and display sleep after 15 mins. It makes no difference which peripherals are attached or which apps or processes are running.
What I have tried;
- Shutdown, restart and reset the SMC controller
- Shutdown, restart and reset PRAM (opt+cmd+P+R)
- Disk permissions verify & repair via disk utility
- Restart holding shift into safe mode
- Restarted normally
The problem still persisted, so then I got medieval;
- Reinstated from a previous time machine backup (prior to problems manifesting)
- Reinstalled Mavericks from Cmd+R startup
Neither improved the situation, so....
- Booted in utility mode, formatted boot drive.
- Reinstalled Mountail Lion from recovery partition
Still getting the same thing.
- Reinstalled Mavericks 10.9.3 from the Mac App Store.
Still getting the same problem.
I'm fairly confident that this is not a software issue, but I am now at the limit if my Mac knowledge! Has anybody had a similar problem?
If this likely to be an SSD failure on the cards or a logic board issue?
I gave now booked a Genius Bar appointment for Monday but Any help or advice would be appreciated. On number 2...
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

On #1, Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Also...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

My Mac Mini Keeps Freezing!
Hello,
Hoping someone can help me. My MAC Mini (mid-2011) was working great for 7 months. I decided I wanted to take advantage of Facetime so I purchased a Logitech C920 webcam. When I connected it to the USB port, my MAC screen froze and then turned white. Upon rebooting the MAC, a camera driver update window appeared from Apple requesting I download two camera drivers (unfortunately I don't remember the name of the files). I downloaded and installed the files then the webcam seemed to work, no problem. After a day or two my MAC started freezing, and the screen would turn white. I have to turn off the MAC using the power button, and then turn it back on. I have since disconnected the webcam but the issue still exists. I tried using time machine to restore an old image prior to updating the driver, but that did not help. I ran a Sophos virus scan on all the files but the results were clean. I made sure all my MAC software is up to date and it was. Not sure what to do next. Maybe format the boot drive and then restore the old image? Wait for Mountain Lion to come out and see if that takes care of it? If I format the boot drive won't the MAC become inoperable and I won't be able to restore the old image? (sorry, I'm an advanced PC user but this is my first MAC). Thanks. If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
If you have an optical drive, make sure there is no disc in it.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or shutdown failure, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

Mac Mini Server freezes hard, too hot?
Hi,
Our Mac Mini Server (half a year old) with the newest system crashes hard now and then.
It could run for up to three weeks occasionally but now in the summer it could sometimes only run for minutes until it hangs hard with frozen mouse and clock.
I have found no other way than resetting by the power switch.
According to the technical specification it should handle up to 35°C environment. (Right now we have 28°C in the room here.)
It seemed to help a bit by installing smcFanControl and increase the fan speed.
It will crash even without any work being done on it. No special applications started. No network traffic.
If the exhaust temp is above about 32 to 34° the problems seem to worsening. Now it is 37°C despite full fan speed (5500 rpm) and it crashed after minutes.
Sometimes it will even hang during the boot process.
Have anybody else heard about such problems?Hi MalcomKay,
I had to open a service ticket as Jiri suggested. The technician was pretty sure the crashes were caused by a defective Airport board and exchanged that (despite I doubted that and never used Airport for the server).
I came back home (2x2x120 km of travel) and started the Mac Mini Server up. I booted and run the AppleServerDiagnostics.app test from an USB. It lasted 15 minutes (until it was warmed up) and then crashed so hard it was not counted by the test. It just froze hard. It crashed when running the memory test. It always crashed before finish when running that test!
I returned the server to the Apple Service (another 480 km of travel). This time they exchanged the whole motherboard. They tested it running intense traffic and operations for one full week without a freeze. So it was a faulty mother board!
Now it has been running like a charm for months.
This is not the first temperature problem affected board Apple has delivered to me.
Good luck! /Johan
Tips: Prepare an USB stick you can boot from. It is so frustrating to have a computer without a dedicated DVD where you can boot from and run the hardware tests. -
our mac mini server was freezed and try to restart, but the apple logo and the spinning gear keep running.
I try un-plugged it but same thing the spinning gear logo keep running.See if you can restart into the Recovery HD by pressing/holding Command+R at the boot chime. Then, open Disk Utility and do a Verify Disk. If there are errors, then do a Repair Disk.

Mac Mini (OSX6) freezes on boot if USB cable to KVM connected
I have a Mac Mini (OS X 10.6.8) that has started freezing with a solid grey screen on boot up (i.e., no Apple logo, no spinning wheel). The work around is relatively easy: all I need to do is disconnect the USB cable running to my ATEN KVM CS1768 switch, power down, power up and then reconnect the USB cable once the Mac desktop is loaded. While this just happened three times in a row, it doesn't happen all the time. The first time it happened last summer I spent an hour on the phone with Mac support (the computer was still under warranty at that point) and the very last suggestion they made was to disconnect the USB cables before attempting to reboot. (I don't recall precisely if the problem occured when my USB peripherals-- a Mac USB keyboard and mouse-- were directly connected to the Mini rather than being routed through the KVM switch, but I *think* it did.)
If anyone has a quick answer or can point me to a prior discussion of this same (or a related) issue, I would be most gratefulHi,
Thanks for the response. I've been using Macs for a little over four years now but this is only the first time I have gone to the system logs (or any of the other logs available from the consolute utility).
The system log appears to be completely unhelpful. I got up this morning sometime after 6:00 a.m. and posted my first report (see above) at 6:48 a.m. (I don't have a record of the exact times of the boot up freezes.)
Following are the *entire* contents ot the system log covering this period:
Nov 19 01:12:15 WHW-Mac-Mini loginwindow[40]: loginwindow SleepWakeCallback WILL sleep
Nov 19 06:26:35 WHW-Mac-Mini loginwindow[40]: loginwindow SleepWakeCallback will power on, Currenttime:11/19/2012 6:26:35.019 AM - Waketime:11/19/2012 6:26:33.980 AM = Deltatime:1.038853049
Nov 19 06:27:05 WHW-Mac-Mini loginwindow[40]: no spins reported for this wake
Nov 19 07:35:13 WHW-Mac-Mini login[17714]: USER_PROCESS: 17714 ttys000
I assume that one of the two successful reboots that I did during this period was probably at 6:27.
The "all messages" log has some additional information from this time frame that may be useful:

Following this there were quite a few unsuccessful attempts to connect with my VNC server and little else that seemed noteworthy. Nothing that referenced anything to do with USB or USB peripherals.
And, of course, when I rebooted just now (in the hopes of getting a report from all of the logs corresponding to the exact time of the reboot), my Mini started just fine with no freeze up. -
Mac Mini mouse freezes when connected to interactive white board
Our school district has several Mac Mini's (OS 10.4.11) connected to interactive white boards (Smart). With regularity the mouse and/or keyboards will "freeze", often in the lower left hand corner of the screen, and will only operate normally when the USB cord for the Smartboard is disconnected. Then all functions of the computer return. This effectively means that the interactive whiteboard is no longer useful. Has anyone else encountered these issues with Macminis? Could it be a software issue??
Additionally I have had constant problems with our Mac minis "freezing" in our computer lab when students are working on them. If they have several applications open this happens regularly. Are these machines prone to freezing?Yes sounds like you already know the answer. I'd contact Smart or whomever makes this whiteboards to see if they know about compatibility with the macmini's you use.
As far as being prone to freezing no I've not seen any long or lengthy threads about freezing or other such complaints around here so I don't think so.
I've had my mini for almost a year now and push it pretty hard and find it almost impossible to make it freeze, reboot, lockup or any such thing myself. -
My Mac Mini (late 2012) is less than two months old and has started to randomly freeze for no reason.
The sequence of events is always the same - namely as I am moving between documents, photos or web pages I get the freeze then about 10 seconds later the mouse will freeze leaving me in that unenviable position of having to switch the Mac Mini off and then back on.
I know that it has to something with the Mac Mini as I have reduced my hardware configuration to:
Mac Mini
27" LED Cinema Display
Apple USB keyboard
Apple Type A1152 Mouse
Time Capsule
Linksys WAG160N ADSL Modem/Router (configured in bridge mode to allow Time Capsule to act as main router)
Even with this minimal hardware configuration I still get random freezing.
I have already tried taking the Time Capsule out of the configuration and plug the Modem straight into the Mac Mini which worked for the better part of a day befor the freezing returned.
One other thing I have noticed is that once I reboot the Mac Mini it just carries out a normal boot up sequence in that I do not get any popup windows asking me to report a crash to Apple, although Firefox or Safari both report that this has happened.
Any help from those with far more technical ability than I would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
LesThanks for the remind Linc - spent an hour on the phone with a support tech who in the end made an appointment for me with the Genius Bar in my local Apple Store.
I played along although I was baffled at this turn of events.
Crux was when I turned up for the appointment there was no mucking about - they took my Mac Mini and ten minutes later presented me with a brand new one with all of my software transferred. Fingers crossed it hasn't gone wrong yet.
Once again thanks to all for the suggestions - the help I received explains why this community is so good. -
Hi,
I am puzzled by a Mac Mini, which has the following configuration:
- Mac Mini 2,1
- Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz
- 2 Go RAM
- 111.47 Go HD
- Boot ROM version MM21.009A.B00
- SMC Version 1.19f2
- Mac OS X 10.5.8.
This machine used to run smoothly until recently, when it began to near-freeze - i.e. slow down dramatically - on occasions.
I eventually carried out a clean re-install from the start-up CD, excluding a couple of usual suspects, such as the Logitech Control Centre.
The Mac Mini has been running fine for no more than 2 weeks. Today, it near-froze again! Fortunately, I managed to launch the Activity Monitor in order to figure out whether any operation was overloading the machine. The bad news is that nothing seems wrong at first glance:
- 5.5% processor load
- 0.8 Go free RAM, out of 2 Go
- 87.8 Go free HD capacity, out of 111.5 Go.
Going forward, what should I be investigating?
Thanks for your advice.I have the same issue. I have basically pin pointed that the issue happens when there is moderate to heavy hard drive activity. For instance if I am installing a program in the background I get 5-10 second lockups/freezes every 20 seconds or so.

SMART Disk utility reports no errors on the disk, I also ran a test which reported no errors. Others have reported that the issue may be related to the Spotlight performing indexing while new files are being written to the hard disk which could be related because from what I can tell smaller file writes are definitely causing more lockups than larger ones.
When the issue occurs CPU and Memory utilisation is not high. -
Hi, I had the RAM and hard drive in my mac mini (PowerPC) upgraded to 1GB DDR (PC2700), and a 100GB, 7200 RPM ATA6 Hitachi Hard drive. I reinstalled Mac OS 10.4 on the new drive. The machine runs, but it continually (at random intervals) freezes and displays the "Your computer muster be restared" window ... you know, the one with multiple languages. I ran the Apple Hardware test that came w/ the machine, and it passed .... so any ideas what's causing it to freeze?
most likely the NCRAM was causing kernel panics
