Mac Mini Power PC G4 1.5GHz issue

I received a Mac Mini Power PC 1.5GHz and for some reason it has an earlier OS X installed on it then what it originally came with. Right now it is running 10.3.9. Originally it came with a version of 10.4. I managed to get the original install DVD's for it but I cannot install them because they are bundled software and the Mac Mini doesn't realize it is a Mac Mini anymore because of the older OS being installed on it I believe. When I go to the "about this mac menu" it states that the computer is a PowerMac 10.2 and not a Mac Mini. I would really like to put the original software on it and get it sorted out but when I put the original install DVD in it says, "this software cannot be installed on this computer" and it is the right software, not the intel based software. Any ideas on how to restore this Mac Mini?

So I need what you have. These bundles seem pretty hard to come by. I have searched the web and haven't really found any sources for them.
If you call Apple support, they'll sell you a set for around $50. You may still be able to find a retail Tiger package for less than before Leopard came out, if you want to go that route. If you qualify for an educational discount, you might find a copy at a local university computer store.
I don't know if this additional information helps ... on the outside of the envelope containing the two discs, it says 2Z603-8387-A Mac mini Media; Multilingual. There's one other number on the other side of the bar code: PD11302005

  • Can i upgrade to 10.5 on mac mini power pc 1.4ghz

can i upgrade to 10.5 on mac mini power pc 1.4ghz   I'm at 10.4.11 and nothing works anymore ?

    Hi James, yes you can.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5
But if it's a better Browser you need, then...
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid version 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.

SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

The last version with Mac OS 10.4 and PPC support was SeaMonkey 2.0.14.

  • Intel Based Mac Mini - Power Issues and Resetting SMS

    Hello all.
My company has 15 Mac Minis driving LCD displays. The MACs are running MS Vista Basic and operate 24 hours a day except when they reboot (in the early monring). We have a sporadic issue in that we find the Mac powered off even though we have a power backup and the display is still on. Moreover, in order to turn the Mac back on, we need to unplug the power cord from the back of the Mac and then it will turn back on. I recently uncovered that this actually resets the SMS:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
My question is do these shave a firmware update for the SMS (the systems were puchased in late 2006; don't know how to get the SMS version number from Vista). If so, is there a way to update the SMS firmware with only Vista installed (Apple firmwares usuaslly use the Mac OS Updater)? Finally, what casues the SMS to malfunctino and need to be reset? Could it be the power backups not regulating the voltage to the Mac?
    Thanks fo your help,
    Kevin

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Just to be clear, you're concerned about the "SMC" (System Management Controller), not "SMS", right? The subject of your topic may confuse some folks.
There was an SMC update for the "early 2006" model Mac minis (see here), but it sounds like you have the later 2006 models. What is the processor speed of the Mac minis? If they could use the update, you'll need to start them up into Mac OS X to install it. This could be done with a FireWire or USB 2.0 hard drive and would not affect the software currently installed on them.

  • Mac Mini Intel Core Solo 1,5GHz won't turn on

    Hi at all!
I'm in a trouble with a Mac Mini Intel Core Solo-based.
Well, when I connect power cord, after a while, Power LED self-turns on (without powering on the Mac), but Startup Chime isn't played, there aren't no video signals on screen, Optical Drive mechanics isn't initialized and no Hard disk Drive noise is audible.
I can hear only (if I put my ear on Mini's body) a bit Fan Noise (and a bit air flow on the back).
If I stay-pressing power button for 4 seconds, Mac turns off. It I re-press that button, Mac turns on again. Finally, if I long-press the power button, Mac DON'T perform PMU reset (with classical speed flashing of power led, Long beep and Startup Chime).
What can I do to fix this problem?
Thanks very much to all readers!

    You're right!
I wrote PMU instead of SMU.....in fact, mine is an Intel-based Mac, and PMU is present only in PowerPC Architecture.... ^_^
    Sorry for my expression error.....:)
While I'm writing..... I thought that, in my Self-repairing operations on the Mac Mini, I've also replaced the internal 3V battery (because, with a multimeter, I'd can verify that battery voltage was only 1,75V instead of near 3V). After that, I left Mac turned off for a certain interval of time (I was busy in other personal activities). So, when I turned on again the Mac (after the complete reassembly of the entire computer), the Startup chime was played and the Mac beguns to work.
Is possible that, in the Mini - Intel Core Solo 1,5GHz, a low internal battery can cause problems like in the old dear iMacs G3 ????

  • Why does mac mini power shut down when trying to use external harddrive as boot drive?

I connected a OWC Mercy Elite Pro external hard drive that has it's own power source to my mac mini. It's connected by firewire and I'm trying to use it as an external boot drive. The problem is when I have the power turned on the OWC before I turn the power on the mac mini, the mac powers up but then shuts down after about 30 seconds. However, if I wait to turn on the OWC power after the mac boots up there is no issue. Of course this defeats the purpose of using the OWC as a boot drive because it needs to be on before the mac boots up. I don't have any issues using another external hard drive as a boot drive that doesn't have a power source.

Hmmm, very strange, could there be a ground loop where the OWC drive is plugged in?
If you hold alt or option key at bootup, without the OWC drive, once the boot manager shows up connect the OWC drive, wait, does the OWC drive show up eventually as a boot choice, or what happens?

  • Mac Mini Power Problems

Ok. I have a mac mini 2009 and it was doing fine up until a week ago. Now it will randomly shut it self off. I have tried reseting my sms. I have also done a complete wipe and reinstalled the OS and I get the same problem. I got it checked at the local Apple store, they found nothing wrong. I brought it back home and plugged it up and it works for about 10 minutes before shutting off. I took the computer out of the bedroom where i have it always plugged in and moved it to another part of the house and now it works like new. My question is can my mac have caused a shortage in my wall socket or is there not enough power coming in. Any Ideas... Please cause i would love to move it back into my bedroom.

I seriously doubt your mini caused a fault in your electrical system. Its more likely, especially based on your testing, that the circuit is the issue. Did you check to see if some of your power sockets are run through one of the light switches in the room? Did you or someone else recently move where the mini was plugged in to another socket in the room?

  • Mac mini sudden death after access privilege issue.

    Good Afternoon,
I have a Mac mini running OSX 10.5.8.
Today, I noticed that I couldn't access the Macintosh HD drive on the desktop as I did not have sufficient privileges. When I got-info on the drive, in sharing and permissions, I saw that "admin" suddenly had write-only privileges.
I could not 'unlock' the padlock to change the settings, it wouldn't react or ask for a password or anything. (I am the admin on the mini).
So I thought maybe it's just a restart needed; we run it for quite long times without a shut down.
Now it won't get past the gray Apple with spinner boot screen.
I've tried removing it from the mains to check if maybe the RAM would 'reset' or anything, but that hasn't helped.
Then, I got my OSX installation DVD to attempt booting into the repair function but, as I have the bluetooth keyboard, it won't register the keyboard at the early stage in the boot process - I cannot hold down C or other keys to boot into anywhere.
Having researched a bit, I came across others who also met this combination of issues, but none involving Macintosh HD itself and still being able to get to the gray Apple screen.
Any ideas on how to take it from here?

Then, I got my OSX installation DVD to attempt booting into the repair function but, as I have the bluetooth keyboard, it won't register the keyboard at the early stage in the boot process - I cannot hold down C or other keys to boot into anywhere.
Hi- Stupid question, but did you actually try it? It should work, as the bluetooth drivers are one of the first things loaded before the apple logo even appears.
Power off, power on, hold down the C key (or the option key), and you should be accessing the install dvd with no problems.
Failing that, perhaps you can borrow a USB keyboard from the office or from a friend, and then do it from there.

  • Solved Mac Mini (late 2010) Blue Screen Hang issue

I posted several questions about blue screen hang and was able to fix my problem, after LOTS of work and searching in various forums.
I had been unable to use my computer for over a month; it was simply hanging at the blue screen, and that seemed to happen when my Finder.app had crashed, hiding all my document icons on my desktop, etc. I also had been having issues with Time Capsule and my backup Iomega disk, which is touchy.
When I tried a fix my icons had returned but I had been unable to use computer after rebooting, and I had tried every sort of key combo including trying to boot from the original install CD, etc., but nothing worked. I could not even reboot using original 10.6 software CDs, and was only able to log in Single User Mode and had tried many fixes with Terminal, and finally, this worked, two of the fixes I used are listed below.
It seems, in part, that resetting certain "privileges" worked.
This tip first tip is for Mac OSX 10.3 to 10.3.9 and even though I am on 10.6.8, I ran it, and it worked. THis is the original link location: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411
       1. Start up the computer in Single-User Mode.
       2. Type: in Terminal the command
         mount -uw /
       3. Press Return.
       4. Type (in Terminal, note space before mv)
          mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist preferences2.old
Note space between ".plist" and "preferences".
       5. Press Return.
       6. Type:
         mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist preferences3.old
       7. Press Return.
       8. Type: reboot
       9. Press Return.
Then I followed up with this tip to "Reset certain privileges"
      1. Start up the computer in Single-User Mode.
       2. Check the volume with fsck.
       3. Type: mount -uw /
       4. Press Return.
       5. Type: chmod 1775 /
       6. Press Return.
       7. Type: reboot
       8. Press Return.
When I rebooted, yayyyy! I was able to log back onto my computer, however, all icons were missing, again, so I typed this fix
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder & disown
I am not sure what 1775 means, but this fix got my computer back up, saving me at least a $150 bill at the Genius Bar.
When I typed those commands into Terminal, this is what returned, and seems to be some  QXPscrpiting issue, though I have no idea what that is. and again, some  Dropbox issues. If anyone has any idea what all those issues are regarding ScriptingCodes please let me know.

    Great work, thanks.
As far as those errors, ypu have some missing OS components it seems.
And, before the mount -uw you really should've done this...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • 10.5.8 Update sorts Mac Mini HTPC 10.5.7 display issues

    Just a heads up really.
For those using a mac mini as a home theatre pc (or PVR) with a widesrceen TV, the important display resolutions that were missing from the 10.5.7 update appear to have been reinstated in 10.5.8.
In my case I previously had to revert to 10.5.6 because the 1360x768 resolution option was missing from 10.5.7. (Without that resolution option the desktop either did not fill the screen or ran off the edge of the 37' Philips LCD TV). Now that 1360x768 has been reinstated in 10.5.8 the mac mini is running into the TV fine under 10.5.8 and all is well.
The update works for me so if you've also had to revert to 10.5.6 to get the MM-to-TV display working correctly you might want to check out if the 10.5.8 update works for you too.
    Cheers...
(ps It's worth making a Time Machine backup before using software update. In case 10.5.8 doesn't give the results you want it's easier to restore from TM than do a whole 10.5.6 reinstall).

Here is the process we used.
    1. Run DU and repair permissions
    2. Boot from install disk and make a disk image of the volume (just in case)
    3. Install the combo 10.5.8v1.1 updater
    4. Reboot
    5. Install the combo 10.5.8v1.1 updater again due to a permissions database issue.
    6. Only now run DU and repair permissions
    7. If running mail services search Apple Support Forums for solution to the org.clamav.freshclam error. Note: this shows after you install the latest security update after 10.5.8v1.1
    YMMV

  • Mac mini 2012 new OWC SSD install issue

Hoping someone can makes sense of this report.
My macmini 2012 has been rock stable. 8 gig, Yosemite install.
Yesterday I installed an 120GB Electra 6G SSD as a second drive. Installed a fresh install of Yosemite. Everythign went without a hitch. System ran for 24 hours with non problems. Began installing my software and twice I came back to find the mini had rebooted under the original hard rive/system with a message that the computer had shutdown due to a hardware issue.
Checking Disk Utility the OWC SDD doesnt' even come up.
Rebooting it show shows up again, I can then select it as the start up drive and reboot with the SDD. Everything seems fine. Then a repeat several hours later.
This is the last report. Can someone translate? I don't know if I have a bad SDD, if it's a comptability/OS issue or if I possibly knocked something loose when reassembling. Thanks.

thanks the replies. OWC sold me the kit, cable etc based on the Macmini's specs. I talked with support and the drive I installed should work with no issues.
They did have me reset the PRAM which did. They also told me I might need to install Yosemite 'several times before is sticks' - whatever that means. lol.
Anyway I zapped the PRAM. So far no mysterious restarts with the drive being unrecognized.
One thing I didn't mention though...
MacMini is in a backyard home office (about a 100 feet away with buried CAT6 cable connecting it to the network). I was using Screen Share from my MBP reinstall all my work software. Every crash occurred while using screenshare. I never had any crashes when I was actually sitting at the computer.
I don't know if that has anything to do with it - but I haven't used ScreenShare for any length of time to control the Mac mini since the pram zap. Figured I'll use the computer for a week or so and see how stable it is and then try using screenshare again and see if the behavior repeats itself.
Meanwhile I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I'm just suspect that it was a PRAM issue. But I'm a layman.

  • Mac Mini - Server running Lion - Network related issues

I have a mac mini running Lion.  I am having a few issues that did not exist prior to an upgrade.  But for the life of me, I can't figure it out.
The problems I'm having are as follows:
    1.  screen sharing times out.  It works, then stops after a while.  If I go in and uncheck, then recheck remote management, it'll work again, but only for a while.
    2.  neither the air port or the hardwired ethernet will obtain an ip via DHCP.  Works fine once I put in a static, but will never obtain a dynamic address.
    3.  Homesharing on Itunes will turn off after a while, same as the screen sharing does..
    4.  Time Capsule is no longer found by the Mac Mini.  My macbook pro see it no problem.  It also keeps the itunes homeshare and can get DHCP addresses fine, so I know it's not a router issue that is causing the issues on the mac mini.
    Thanks
    James

well to be honest I wanted a server to run more aspects of what I do privately (rather tahn at work) rather than use hosted accounts from disparate hosted providers on line. In partcular wanted a mail server to handle multiple mail domains, wiki server, web sever as per mail server and I was interested in what they would provide for iphone ipad etc as I have a few that I wanted to link to a server rather than individual macs and pcs
I also thought that Apple might bring their abilities to creating a great UI for essentially linux operating systems to  a server os.
from initial views though it might have been easier (cheaper) to go to ubuntu and just their server version of linux. Anyway I will persist - I will read through the stuff you guys have linked me to - colinsolutions appears to have aimed me at some useful stuff. Looks like a bigger "project" than i imagined - but I havent looked at UNIX since 1986 so if I have to get into the command line it wont kill me I am sure.
thanks for the input - if anyone else can suggets good resources that would be appreciated.
ps simon - i found that the name for the server with the .local extension is visibile from the mac via finder and allows me to connect to the shared folder. so my server is sdhome - the shared resource is sdhome.local ... not sure if this helps but...

  • MAC Mini & 2.5 USB Hard Drive Issue

Strange thing happening with a new MAC Mini:
For Christmas, I bought my wife a brand new MAC mini. Everything has been working fine. So, for our anniversary, I bought her a 120 gig USB hard drive (I know, I'm such a romantic
Anyway, ever since I hooked up the hard drive (USB Drive) to her system, it seems that when I first turn the MINI on, the keyboard and mouse completely stop working. once, I had to hold the power button in to hard boot it, then, when it restarted, everything was working fine again.
Tonight, when I turned the MINI on, it did the same thing. No keyboard or mouse. Then, after I hard booted it, the mini never booted up. Black screen. USB hard drive light was on, but, no MAC power light and screen was black.
Now, I just unplugged the USB drive and all is working fine again.
It seems that the USB hard drive being plugged in while powering the MINI up is giving me some grief.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what can be happening here? It is a brand new MINI with Leopard installed. I highly doubt I have a defective MAC because everything was fine until I plugged a USB HDD into it. With the drive unplugged, it seems that it works fine.
No Operating System(s) are on the USB drive. Just pictures and movie files.
Here is the drive I got her:

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
