Mac Mini PowerPC: What should I do with it?

I have three Macs and no longer have a need for my PowerPc Mini. Any suggestions on how to use it as a resource when I don't need it any longer?

There were ways to get Front Row onto systems which were at first not compatible (it's not supported by Apple but you may still find instructions if you Google it) but Front Row in Leopard works extremely well with G4 minis, as long as you have at least 512Mb RAM. Of course a copy of Leopard adds to the cost of the project!
However, you don't need Leopard to be able to access the iTunes library on another system at home. As long as that system is connected to the same network, and is set to share it's library, the mini should be able to see that shared library even if it's running an earlier version of MacOS. You might want to have a look over at the iTunes area of Apple Discussions (http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=789) for information on how to set it up if you're not familiar with doing so.
In terms of your video problem, if you're getting a usable screen up until the point where the mini is logging itself into your user account, then you have display preferences set to something the TV can't handle. I'm not very knowledgeable on connecting minis to HDTVs, so you might be better posting a new thread asking this question in the 'using displays' section of the Mac mini discussion area (http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=761), to increase the chances of one of our resident experts on this area of using these systems seeing your problem and responding. However, if you connect your mini to an ordinary display and reset it to a basic screen resolution, such as 800x600 at 60Hz, it should then work with your TV sufficient that you can get a usable display to start from. You may then need a utility such as switchresX to help set up your display settings to make it work correctly - you'll find a number of threads in the 'using displays' area on this general area of Mac mini use!

  • Mac Mini Performance - What do you do with your Mini?

I have to upgrade to an Intel machine, no two ways about it. My G5 and my PowerBook 17" are both great, but I can't run some software these days.
My finances are limited, but maybe a Mac Mini will hold me over for a year or so. Problem is, how much can I expect from a Mini in terms of performance?
I do mostly graphic design and digital imaging but I also do motion graphics with app's like After Effects and video editing in FCP. I also like to record audio in Logic or Ableton Live.
How does a Mac Mini perform with apps like this? Does anyone use a Mini for motion graphics, video editing or audio recording?
Is a Mac Mini limited to just office applications, email and surfing the web?
I'd like to hear what others are using their machines for, and what kind of performance they are getting.
    Thanks!

I'm in a similar situation, deciding if Mac Mini is enough power.
Current Mac Mini is about the same performance as a low-end MacBook or MacBook Pro from less than a year ago, before they put in the i3 processor chip and faster graphics chip. So it should be quite powerful, although not as fast as the new MacBook or iMac, good for lots of work, if not as speedy.
Here's a benchmark set (MacWorld SpeedMark) that compares various Macs, what's clear is the base iMac is very fast in comparison.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/154660/2010/10/speedmark65results.html
To save cash I'm considering the base Mini, I already have a 22" monitor plus good Logitech mouse. However, if I get seduced by the very sexy Apple wireless mouse and keyboard, plus RAM upgrade to 4 GB, the extra cost makes the base iMac 21.5" look to be a better buy.

  • I have an IBook dual USB Mac OS x laptop. What should I do with it?

I got this laptop from my aunt. It's an old IBook G3 Dual USB laptop with Mac OS x. It was very lightly used. I bought an airport card for it and downloaded a browser for it called Classila. Now I'm wondering: What should I do with it? Are there any games I can buy for it? I can't play any modern games like Minecraft or any others I've tried. I have an Xbox 360 so I dont rely on this iBook for gaming. Any tips? 5 point to best answer. Thanks

I would suggest maximizing the RAM with a 512 MB module.

We need to know how much space is on the hard drive. See if Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility gives you the information on the hard drive (its capacity and available space).
Mac OS X 10.1 is available from Amazon.
    http://www.amazon.com/Mac-OS-10-1-OLD-VERSION/dp/B00005QVGV
Once you have installed Mac OS X 10.1, you can then download the update here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1226
    Note this:
If updating from Mac OS X 10.1, you must install Security Update 7-18-02 for v10.1 prior to installing this update.
However, this is still a 10-year-old version of the OS and is not very good, so be forewarned.
If the iBook has a drive which is capable of reading DVDs and has enough available space on it, then it would probably run best with Mac OS X 10.4.11 (once you have maximized the RAM with the 512 MB module).

That could be a hardware problem with the screen digitizer but first try these troubleshooting steps in this order:
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds). No data will be lost.
Restore: Connect your device to iTunes on your computer, backup, and then select Restore to Factory.
See here for more details on restore: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201252
If none of these work your device may have developed a hardware problem. Contact Apple Support: http://www.apple.com/contact/

  • Developing applications with iPhone using Mac Mini PowerPC G4

I'm wondering if I can use a Mac Mini PowerPC single core to develop applications with iPhone. Based on the Apple's website http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/ the Mac OS Leopard general requirements are:
-Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    -512MB of memory
    -DVD drive for installation
    -9GB of available disk space
Any thoughts on this? Thanks in Advance.

  • What Should I Do With It?

    Hey everybody,
Here's my scenario. Have a wireless network at home, with the following computers attached to it: MacBook, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac Mini, and Apple TV. Going to be running off of my 1TB Time Capsule when it finally gets here.
I have come across a slightly used PowerMac G5 in near mint condition. It's running 10.5.2, just like my other machines. My question is, what should I do with this thing? It's got an Airport Extreme card installed, so it's "live". There must be something cool I could do. What do all of you think? I realize I'll probably get some sarcastic responses, and that's cool. But I would appreciate some serious ones, too!
    Thanks!

    Hi Jonathan Aley;
How about listing the specs for this newly found PowerMac G5? That might help to get the ball rolling for you.

  • I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please!

I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please! Also, I still don't understand exactly what the benefits are. At the moment it seems a lot of hassle to change a system that's been working perfectly well and that I'm very happy with. I'm not at all sure whether the mac mini (1.66 GHz INtel Core Duo) can be brought up to the relevant spec to run ICloud.  Any thoughts?

There are two aspects to iCloud.  One is simply getting an account, or migrating a mobileme account to iCloud.  The second part is using the various features of iCloud to sync contacts, calendars, use music match or photo sharing, and store iWorks documents.
First to get an iCloud account:
If you have a mobileme account, you can migrate by simply logging onto www.icloud.com (ignore any references to Lion and just click through to complete the migration).  If you have OS X Lion or an iOS 5 mobile device, you can create an iCloud account on that device using any valid AppleID.
Once you have an account, you can use JUST the mail account if you wishi - it is a standard IMAP account so you would set it up like any other IMAP email account you have, in whatever client program you use to read email.
To use the OTHER feautes of iCloud, your computers will have to be running OS X Lion (10.7).  Your iPhone 3G will never be able to use iCloud as it cannot run iOS 5 (you need a min. of an iPhone 3GS to run iOS 5).
The requirements for OS X Lion are here - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html  You need a min. of a Core 2 duo processor so you mini is not capable of running Lion.
So, in your case, the single reasons for iCloud would be if you have a mobileme account, then use the online www.icloud.com to migrate your account so you do not lose your @me.com email address.  You can use iCloud email (without using any other iCloud features) by setting it up as IMAP mail with these settings - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864
If you want an iCloud account and do NOT already have a mobileme account, you will need to upgrade one machine at least to Lion in order to be able to create an iCloud account.

If you are looking at the front page of the App Store and you are seeing the "downloading" message on the right under Quick Links.
Try this... Go into the "Purchases" section in the top bar of the App Store find ML in the list you are presented with. Does it say Resume? If so click the button and it will change to Pause. You may have paused it previously and forgot.
If not then do as Csound1 suggested and simply wait for it to finish

  • When I try to open a bookmark I get a box that says "what should firefox do with this file?" When I try to change the "open with Internet Explorer" I can't find firefox ? Last week this bookmark worked fine.

When I open a bookmark a box pops up that says "What should firefox do with this file? "open with Internet Explorer? When I browse I can't find firefox to change to. Last week this book mark worked perfectly.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

  • Hi, I have a Mac iBook PowerPC G4 1.33 GHz with Mac OSX 10.4.11.

Hi, I have a Mac iBook PowerPC G4 1.33 GHz with Mac OSX 10.4.11.
I would like to connect an 20" Apple Cinema Display with ADC connection to it, but it seems impossible because the cord on the Cinema Display doesn't fit the Display port on the iBook G4!
May anybody suggest how to solve the problem?
Is the 20" Apple Display (aluminium enclosure) compatible with my iBook G4 Display port?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your replay, Cornelius.
    Can you be more specific?
    Where the Display Forum is?
    I can't find it.
My question was: Is the Aluminium 20" Apple Display" (not the ADC Apple Cinema Display) compatible with the iBook G4 Display port?
I know for sure that the Apple ADC-DVI adapter can not be used to connect a Cinema Display to my iBook G4 port.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

    cor-el,
Thanks for your prompt reply. However, the sources you gave do not seem to apply exactly to my situation. I have attached some screenshots that show what the dialogue box looks like for a pdf download, and what my settings in the Apps panel of Options are. You will note in the first screenshot that I have checked the box to handle this file type automatically; however, the next time I try to download a file of that type, the same dialogue box appears looking exactly like the one shown, so checking the "automatic" option appears to do nothing. The files to be downloaded from my Gmail messages are not generic or altered file types - they are shown as pdf, doc, docx, etc. So while your intent was good, your post did not help. Thanks anyway.
