  • Mac Mini 3,1 running Windows 8... is it possible

I install it just fine but then everything stops after the initial reboot.
This is what I posted on the Windows 8 forums...
Trying to instal Windows 8 on a mac mini (version 3,1) but the screen loses signal after the initial reboot.
I have been wanting to put Windows on my Mac for a long time so I thought this would be a great way to see if I'd like it. After the initial installation, the computer reboots itself to the partition dedicated to Windows. The fish appears but after that, everything just stops.
I've tried using a different monitor, I've tried booting in low-rez mode, I've tried booting in safe mode (it wont let me because it says it still needs to finish the installation), and I've tried both 64 and 32 bit versions of the OS.  I'd really like to know what the problem is since I was hoping to at least purchase Windows 7 soon but I don't want to be out of luck with that one, too.
My Mac Mini is a dual core Intel machine with 8 GB of RAM (I upgraded it). I installed Windows 8 via Apple's Bootcamp and I gave it a partition of 50 GB. I've tried booting to Windows with no disc in the drive, with my OS X disc in the drive and with the Windows 8 disc in the drive. Nothing changed. I've also tried booting to the Windows 8 disc again to see if there was something more to be done from the DVD, but it just gave me the same screen it did when I originally started to instal Windows 8 in the first place.
I initially downloaded the ISO and used the Windows 7 Download Tool (as I was told) to create the disc image that I've been using.
I am desperately hoping for an answer here as I am in dire need of an MS-DOS operating system.

The RAM. Swap it. Reset it. Windows will not accept marginal or issues - which goes against the grain and tradition - I've gone through with a couple people now.
Even downgrade for the install to minimum memory
One was due to DIMMs being loose in the socket.
Another pulled their 3rd party and was fine.
The ISO you burned? reburn it at slowest burn speed is also well known to cause bad installs.
    Try those.

  • Mac mini with a Panasonic 42" plasma screen

I am new to macs to bear with me.
    I am trying to connect a mac-mini to a Panasonic 42" plasma screen (TH-42PX20)
According to the Panasonic manual the max resolution is 1024x768 with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The plasma screen connects to the mac with a D-Sub 15P connector (standard PC)
I select 1024x768 screen resolution and the image seems clear but there are things off the screen (top menu, bottom dash board). Is there a way to change the ascpect ratio? I tried the detect monitors option but that caused the screen to "white out" and never return with an image.
    thanks,
    wazzu62

There is are a couple of programs available to solve your problem. One is "switchhresx". You can download it from "Versiontracker.com". There are lots of posts in this forum regarding its use and setup. Just do a search on "switchresx" and take your pick.

  • How to add a Mac Mini device to the windows domain

    Hi,
I want to add my Mac Mini machine to a windows domain. Is it possible to add it? I have tried but it is not working. It asks for Client ID While joining to a windows domain. I have given MAC address, IP address and hostname of Windows server but it is not working. Please do help me out to sort out the issue.
    Regards,
    Ram_Livia

    Hi BDAqua,
Why should we create a user again? The point is I am going to join this Mac Mini to a windows domain controller. Windows domain controller means a centralized database of an organization. It is communicating with my Domain controller. But the issue is it is not founding my domain node while joining to a domain. Please find the attached screen shots for your reference. If you have worked on this please send me step by step configuration.

  • Mac Mini stuck looking for Windows Boot Disk! Please help

Hi all, I've been running Leopard on my Mac Mini off a FireWire hard drive enclosure. The 750gb hard drive in the enclosure is a drive I used to have in my old iMac.
When I had my iMac I'd installed Windows via Bootcamp. So when running, the Mac Mini would show a Windows partition on the Leopard desktop. Today I needed to do something in Windows. so I went to Sys Prefs > Startup Disk and chose to reboot into that Windows partition. BIG MISTAKE
Now whenever I turn the Mini on it looks for a Windows partition and tells me it can't find one. I've tried resetting the PMU, booting from Leopard DVD, holding Option, nothing works. The only thing that will work is if I put a Windows XP disk in and it will try and take me through the install process.
How on earth do I get my Mac back booting into Leopard!?
Message was edited by: Thomas Robinson

I can't believe it was just the new Apple thin Alu Keyboard causing it! Plugged in an old Apple USB one and I got the Option startup menu straight away, totally bizarre!

  • 2009 mac mini crashes w/black screen & color bar

Just purchased the 2ghz mini with 1gb of ram, I installed another ram stick w/2gb. Mini crashes sometimes frequently with a black screen covering most of the desktop with just a little bit of the desktop showing at the top and a thin bar of colors on top of the black screen.
Anybody have this problem? Is it bad ram, bad video card, should I use the mini display port instead of the mini dvi port? Should I take it back, can I take it back having installed the ram myself?
    Any thoughts is appreciated

Well since the RAM is the thing out of the ordinary on a new Mac, it is suspect. Unfortunately you have voided your warranty by opening the mini. The user guide for the new mini states in a couple of spots that there are no user serviceable parts and opening it voids the warranty. So your milage with Apple on the warranty may vary. And unless you are a pristine technician they will know you opened the Mac.
Since you have cracked it open once you may as well test the RAM. If it works fine with the original RAM module alone, then you know the issue is related to the new RAM. Could you have seated the RAM poorly? Where did you get the RAM? Crucial seems to have had some problems with their 2 GB RAM modules. Does it work with the new RAM alone?
And before a bunch of folks come storming in here to dispute my statement about voiding the warranty, another user with a new Early '09 Mac mini added RAM and then experienced an issue that would normally be covered under warranty. But he reported, in this very forum, that Apple told him he voided the warranty opening it himself and installing RAM and that they would no longer honor the warranty, so he would have to pay for the repair himself.

  • Mac Mini Server Boot Camp Windows 8.1 White Screen Issue

    Hello Apple Peeps!
I have a Mac Mini Server 2012 which I have had for around 6 months. I use it quite a lot mainly for Music Production on the OS X side and Graphic Design on the Windows side.
I recently decided to factory restore it as I wanted to spring clean it and reorganise the way some of my apps were installed. The way I had it set up was it was running OS X on one SSD and Windows 8.1 (installed using Boot Camp) on the other SSD. The way I went about the factory restore was I first used disk utility to erase/format the Windows SSD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then went about the factory restore of OS X onto the other SSD as normal (following instructions from the Apple website).
The issue I am having now is that my newly installed Windows 8.1 (used solely on a single SSD) is hanging on a white screen for quite a long time before the Windows splash screen shows up, where before when I would boot or restart into Windows there was no white screen and it would go straight into the Windows splash screen and load to the desktop very quickly.
    So my question is...
Why do I get this prolonged white screen before the Windows 8.1 splash screen appears? How can I get rid of it? It was certainly not present on my previous installation. Can anyone advise me what the computer is doing during this time so that I can do some further research into a solution.
    What I have tried already....
    1) PRAM & SMC reset.
    2) Setting the startup disk to Boot Camp in both OS X and Windows 8.1.
    3) Reinstalling Windows 8.1 through Boot Camp.
MAC MINI SERVER (LATE 2012), 2.6GHZ QUAD CORE I7, 16GB RAM, 2 x 256GB SSD, OS X 10.10.2, Windows 8.1 (Retail), Boot Camp Assistant (5.1.3), Covered By AppleCare.
I would really appreciate some help with this ;-)

I have right clicked on each SSD in Device Manager and selected the option 'Properties' from the drop down menu, which brings me to this window...
I'm not sure where I can find Device Attributes, I have clicked on each of the tabs in the window above, as far as I can see none of them mention AHCI enabled or anything similar. Thanks for all of your responses by the way...much appreciated!

  • Mac Mini problems

I received my Mac Mini yesterday and have come across a host of problems. Some are probably due to my setup, while others are probably due to the Mac itself. I'd appreciate help in solving some of these.
In order of "most important" to "least important":
1.) I'm trying to hook the Mini to a Yamaha receiver (http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/av/libimage/rxv2500/rxv2500rtl.jpg). Previously, I had hooked my PC media center computer into the orange DVD coaxial digital input jack in the lower left. The other end is a mini plug (which fits both in my old sound card and the Mini). I tried hooking the Mini up this way and the Audio Output preference panel claims I plugged in a "Line Out", not a "Digital Output". I can't get the Mac to recognize it as a digital connection -- I get no sound. Keep in mind this receiver can pretty much play anything thrown at it (PCM, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, THX, etc). Am I going to have to bite the bullet and buy a cable with Toslink (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=TA9 68LL/A)?
2.) My goal of this setup is to take the movies I own and rip them to a "DVD jukebox" (a server I have in another room). Previously I was able to leave the ripped DVDs as "VIDEO_TS" folders on the hard drive, but Front Row doesn't like that. I've tried Handbrake a couple of times and the results aren't great (choppy video). Is there a guide to what settings are best for ripping DVDs to use in Front Row?
3.) Along that vein, I'm noticing Front Row is displaying my 4:3 videos in their original aspect ratio, rather than stretching them out to fill the widescreen. Is there a way to set this? (I noticed in the DVD player there's a video zoom option, but I don't see it in Front Row). My TV is a 4:3 HDTV, and the Mac Mini is displaying the desktop in 16:9 with black bars on the top and bottom. When it displays a 4:3 movie, it then puts black bars on the left and right. The video takes up 1/4 of the screen in the dead center -- it's like watching a postage stamp (I'm thinking of just dropping the resolution to 640:480 so it fills the screen).
4.) The range on the Bluetooth has been... not great. I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and mouse so I could sit on my couch and use the machine (similar to my old setup), but if I go farther than about 5 feet from the Mac Mini the mouse starts bouncing around the screen and occasionally gets disconnected. I tried a different wireless mouse and keyboard and got the same results. Bluetooth usually has a range much farther than 5 feet, so this is kind of disappointing. Is everyone else experiencing this?
Mac Mini (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Chris,
You'll probably get a whole lot better responses and less chatter by posting each question separately, but we're here, so let's dig a bit on some:
    1) No idea - it should just work. Are you sure you gently but firmly inserted the cable in both ends? Better to wait for someone with toslink experience on this one.
    2) Not sure what forum this is best for - third party software questions? In general - you get better video settings by telling handbrake (or any codec) to not compress so much. Try giving it two passes to compress and allowing more data on the output end. There are lots of tutorials online
    http://handbrake.m0k.org/documentation.php
    3) Front Row is really basic - there is no user interface yet to even change preferences and looking at the property list it saves, there appears to be nothing to make that sort of control from the app. Best to re-encode your movies to signal the correct aspect ratio if you want to change how they play by default.
    4) This may be the hardest to change since interference is most likely the issue and very hard to track (minute changes can make a big difference - not to mention that most of us fly blind while determining signal strength and trying to guess if there is interference or not). Try turning off other things that use that frequency. (Airport and home phones that use 2.4GHz are the worst typical offenders.) You might have luck having only air between you on the couch and the mini - but another technology might be needed if the interference is coming from a neighbor with a really powerful phone or a leaky microwave. There is no way a small mouse is going to out gun one of them...

  • Mac mini and a 30 in display screen questions

    Hi everyone .
I wanted to no if anyone out there knows if the Apple Mac mini will run a apple 30 inch screen . I want to run my dell 30 inch screen on it at full resolution of 2560 x 1600 . Thats what my display runs at like the apple one . But before I buy one of these mac mini machines . I want to no if it will handle dual link for the 30 inch display .
Also I what to run the sims 3 game on it . I see that some of the older mac mini will not run with gma -950 series graphic card thats built in to the older ones . Only the newer made mac mini machines . I see that apple dont have any newer style mac mini left for sale right now . So ether I have to spend 600.00 dolars at the apple store off the shelf . But I dont want to do that right now . so I have to wait for now .
But what I really want to no is if The mac mini is wort the money . I see some people say that the imac is better . But I dont want not use my 24 inch dell display screen . I payed close to 600.00 new with a 5 year warranty for it . Plus the mac mini has built in bluetooth and airport card for it .So I dont have to buy it extra .
If you have any reviews on it , I would like to hear what you have to say about it .
    Thank You
    duckland23

Thanks for responding to my post but Thats somewhat what I was looking for . The Main question I wanted to no Did anyone out there Have a mac mini hooked up to a 30 inch screen. I need to no if the screen will have the same resolution as my power mac g5 1.8 dual with a Nvivia 6800 GT with duallink video card . The card I have from nvivia has a max resolution of 2560 x 1600 at it maxed out .
My game graphics look very good on my power pc g5 dual 1.8 with the dualink card from nvivia .I would buy a new mac pro but I dont have money coming out of my a*s. I'm fine with my regular g5 but the only reason I want to buy a mac mini is to play the sims 3 .Me and my wife are really mad that maxius the maker of the game , will not wright a new program for mac . The only one they are making is not a true mac software or program under os x . What I have learned at the sims 3 web forum is that the current game for mac os x is a windows game with a mac emulator . The people that are also playing it under a power book like 2007 model with gma 950 graphics . It wont play at all . Nice going apple on this one you really want the people with powerpc g5 to buy new macs .I think apple and maxis the game maker had there hand in on this .Apple dont you get enough money you have squeeze every bit of money out of us you can .
But back I'm done lashing out at apple for now .So as it stands I buy a apple mac mini or a dell hybrid small computer windows based by dell 499.00 us dollars . or a apple for 599.00 dollars at the apple store .But the downside is that in the future it may not be able to play the new games in three years or so and be out of date . WE waist more electronics in this country than any country in the world . But I'm not the first person encounter this problem . There's many more people that still have the g5 line and like there true mac computer not this fake intel machine . Why did apple do this in the first place start with a intel chip in there computers in the past not goto IBM to buy there chips ?. If this was done in the first place we would be better off right now .
So back to me buying a mac mini this is were i'm at right now stuck not able to play the sims 3 because it not a true mac written game under unix like all the games in the past . I had game from my windows machine that were written for windows 98se and the games played fine under windows xp no problems at all .I did not have to shell out hundreds of dollars to play a game like this ? . I think apple and maxis is taking us for a ride and riping us off . Maybe some of you people dont think so . Me my self dont think that and am very mad at this .
so that all i mave to say for now .

  • Mac mini / HP w2007 black flickers

    Hi,
I recently bought a new Mac mini and the Hp w2007 monitor to go with it. I use the DVI cable that came with the monitor to connect the two. My problem: every once in a while, the screen turns black for a second and then comes back on; and sometimes, these black flashes come rapidly one after the other so that I can only restart the computer. Has anyone had similar experiences, or might you have a suggestion for what the problem could be?
    Many thanks to all,
    Martin

I had similar problems while using my Mac Mini and it turned out to be the DVI cable itself. The problem manifested itself with both a PC and a Mac.
I would first try another cable if you can find one around before looking any further. Also, try making sure that it is firmly connected on both ends.

  • Mac mini - dvi to svideo adapter - no screen on tv

I also have a G5 1,6 ghz. At the back it has 2 connections for a screen. I use 1 connection for my studio display, the other one I use for my sony tv to watch movies etc with the dvi to svideo adapter and the svideo cable in the connector an the tv. It works fine with synchronize the screens.
Why doesn't the connector work on my mac mini to my tv??
This is the connector I use:

  • Mac Mini (2011) can't boot, no screen display.

Hi, my mac mini (2011) finally won't startup today.
It was since two weeks ago, the mini goes freeze very frequently, I discovered that the fan speed was always below 2000rpm, meantime, the CPU temp was around 80-90 degree, it is around 25 degree in the room, last Friday I installed a software named smcfancontrol, which can manually speed up the fan, and it seems better, and the computer runs faster, I think the CPU is running in full speed.
Today, I opened a video to watch, after about ten minutes, the computer goes freeze again, and of course I force powered it down by pressing the power button on the back, then the tragic came:
    - when I try to boot up the machine, the front light turns on, then off with a "ka" sounds like the hard drive shutting down(force powering it down)
    - after around two seconds, the light goes on again, and the fan smoothly goes to full speed, there is nothing shows up on screen, as well as no apple boot up sound.
    - I tried to reset smc (power down, unplug power cable, wait 15 seconds, plug in power cable, wait 5 seconds, power on), no luck.
    - I tried to reset pmu (at least internet says it's pmu, it seems apple website did not mention how to reset pmu on mac mini, power down, hold power button for five seconds, power on), no luck
    - I also tried to unplug the memory, try with every single one to boot, no luck
    - last Friday, when I can still boot up the computer, I thought there might too much dust, I removed the fan and cleaned it up, it looks a small piece of plastic on the fan plug were damaged, but the smcfancontrol app still can control its speed, therefore I think the fan is OK.
    - during many retry, there was one time, the fan goes full speed at startup, with no front light off,(my current status is fan goes to full speed gently).
    - the computer is connected with an AV amplifier, then output to a plasma TV, when the computer is powered off, the TV displays a background of amp, when I startup the computer, although no video output from computer, the TV goes to a "No Signal" status, I dont's think this is related to my problem.
the computer is out of warrentee, but bought only for less than two years... I really want it back to work, can someone help me? many thanks!
wish you all have a good day.

Hard to troubleshoot when you can't turn on the computer on any more.  One option is to bring it to an Apple store to have them look at it.  They will tell you what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix.  I have never heard of them charging for a diagnostic and an estimate.
If your CPU was running hot all the time and your fan had small plastic pieaces, in my opinion, something got fried.  The mini is so compact, that the excessive heat may have also over heated your hard drive causing thd "ka" sound.
If you decide to continue in to use a Mac Mini as a media server, may I would suggest using iStat to monitor it.  I use iStat on my 2011 Mac Mini Media Server to monitor CPU usage, all sensors, and internet incoming and outcoming.

  • Airport Mac Mini Problem

I have the latest version of the Mac Mini. I have only been using the computer for a month even though I purchased it back in July. We have wireless in our how (NETGEAR router) and all the other computers are PCs. The problem I am having with my mac mini is that the airport recognizes our network but when I try to connect, it tells me that “there is a problem connecting to the network “NETGEAR”. The other computers in the house are getting great signal and at times I also get signal with the mini. However 80% of the time it doesn’t work. I called customer service and they told me the problem is interference. I followed their suggestions and the problem persists. What can I do now?

Our network is open. do you have any other
    suggestions?
Have you tried the many excellent suggestions on the Airport forum?
I have found iFelix to be extremely helpful. The link below may help.
I followed the suggestions for my setup which included a windows laptop and all three computers share files, internet connections without any problem.

  • Mac mini occasionally boots in startup volume screen (SOLVED).

Here is my original message from March 08:
"I've had this problem since I've had my Mac mini (about a year now). Sometimes the startup volume screen appears despite not having any other Hard Drives connected apart from the boot drive (which is the internal Hard drive) and despite not pressing any keyboard keys on startup.
I am using 10.5.2 with the latest mini firmware and am unable to think what could be causing this? I have selected my main hard-drive in the startup disk preferences and have no permissions/hard drive problems (so says disk utility) but the problem persists. It's a minor annoyance but one I would welcome any help with."
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1433640&tstart=0
Because the original post is archived I thought I would post the answer in a new thread. The answer to this problem was to replace the network cable connecting my Mac mini to my Apple router.
I think the previous faulty cable was causing the mini to do a phantom network boot and that's why the startup volume screen came up from time to time.
Since, the cable change no more startup volume screen problem.
Phew, this has been bugging me ever since I bought my mini. It's nice to know sometimes it's the simple answers that work

I have a similar problem. Whenever I startup my Mac Mini, an icon of the "Macintosh HD" appears in the middle of the screen. It doesn't go away until I click on it. After that, every thing works fine... until I use Safari. If I use Safari long enough, some type of glitch occurs that doesn't let me type correctly; Safari will stop working as it should be, and every time i try to type, some really weird symbols appear, like these ones: ßêÄ©¶¢. The only option I have left is to restart the computer, over, and over, and over again. Please help!!!!
