Mac Mini Profile Manager installing/updating ipad Apps - HELP!

Hi,
i am hoping someone might be able to help with the following.
we have a mac mini server to remote manage 25 ipads using profile manager.
this works well as we can lock, wipe and clear passcodes etc.and attach the policies without any trouble.
However we are trying to push out an app (version 1.4) to the devices and this is sort of working but not fully.
if the app is already installed with version 1.3 it doesnt update even though in profile manager, 'active tasks' it says successful.
if you go go into profile manager and select the device and select 'update info' this registers against the device but still shows as the old version.
if we delete the app from our test ipad and push it out via profile manager it goes in active tasks as successful then the ipad has a pop up message box saying the xxxxxx.ourdomain.co.uk would like to install the app, once this has been ok'd it  installs on the ipad ok, but when you select the app it tries to open then goes back to the screen again and never opens the app.
if you download the app direct from itunes it opens with out any trouble.
here is the process i am using.
on the mac mini server.
download the app via itunes
then in apps i drag the app on to the desktop, this creates the .ipa file
in profile manager, select the device, edit apps and browse to the .ipa and upload
select the uploaded app and 'add'
when you save this, then go to active tasks it gets pushed out to the device and reports as successful
then the app either doesnt update if old version is installed or installs if no app is installed but doesnt open
any help welcome
regards
Gavin

Gavin,
We've run into the same issue that you mentioned. My understanding of the Push App functionality of Profile Manager is this:
Pushing apps is designed to be used to deliver In-House developed apps over the air (OTA). Meaning, if your organization develops an app for use on its own devices, you can upload the .ipa to Profile Manager and push it out while bypassing any App Store interaction. The In-House .ipa would contain its own provisioning profile that would dictate who is allowed to run it.
When you download an app from the App Store, the .ipa that you get actually contains the AppleID that was used to purchase/download the app in the .plist. If you then push that app to a device that has never been used with that AppleID, the app will fail to launch as it cannot verify that you actually own the app.
Before we go any further: what I'm about to discuss isn't officially condoned or supported by Apple, which means it is inheritly risky and could be patched over at any time.
In order to bypass the issue, what has worked for us is to sign into the App Store on each iPad with the AppleID that is used to purchase the apps on your Mac Mini. You need to download at least one app to the iPad while logged in with that AppleID in order for the iPad to retain the AppleID after the iPad users log in again with their personal AppleID. After you have done that, users may once again log in with their own AppleID.
At this point, you can push an app to any of those devices that have been paired with your Mac Mini's AppleID at least once. The apps won't (immediately) crash.
Here's the catch: I'm told that the .ipa contains an "expiration date" of sorts. Once that date has elapsed, your iPad will attempt to extend the expiration date by connecting to the App Store to verify that the same AppleID that was used to download the app in the first place is still active on the device. If it is not, the app may once again crash when you attempt to run it. Now, this expiration date or timer is not disclosed, meaning, if this is really the case, you will have no idea when the apps will stop working. It could be weeks, or months, or years. A gamble, really. So, use that at your own risk.
Currently, there is no official method for pushing App Store apps Over-the-air with Profile Manager or any other Mobile Device Management platform.
Remember!: If you are even considering pushing apps in the manner mentioned above, you will still need to account for licensing. As an organization, you must have purchased the same number of copies of an app as you intend to install on your devices. This is a non-issue with free apps, but for auditing purposes, you'd best look into VPP or steer clear of pushing apps altogether.
I hope some of that helped clear up your question.
Good luck!

  • Profile Manager, installing OS X apps

    Hi,
In profile manager, in "Apps" tab one of the filters is "OS X apps". However, when looking in Devices there is "Apps" tab for iOS devices, but there is none for OS X devices. Also I cannot add any Mac application to the applications list, I always get the "File Not Supported" error (tried pkg, dmg). Similar topics without the answer here:

What is the reason for this filter, when it's impossible to install any application on OS X through PM?

It says 'No eligible devices.' when I try it in Device Groups, Users and Groups (with assigned devices). In Devices, this option is not accesesible.

  • My new mac mini downloaded a firmware update. I saw this in apps but gave an error when launching. Now what?

Yesterday I received a new mac mini (actually, a refurbished one that was originally released in July, sold from Apple).  It downloaded a bunch of stuff when I did the software update, including an EFI Firmware update for the mac mini.
As far as I can tell everything ran just fine.  However, I noticed in my applications folder (possibly under "utilities" though I may be wrong), an item with the circle/slash through it.  It was the firmware update.  I tried to open it and I received a message that the application could not be opened because of a problem when downloading it.
I deleted the file, hoping the software update would catch it again, no luck.
This is a new system and I'm hesitant to start deleting receipts, library files, etc., on my own.
I did unplug it and re-boot.  No change.
I checked for firmware updates and looked at my system info and it looks like I have the current version.
I tried to manually download the latest firmware update for my system and it told me that this software wasn't for my system, although I'm sure I downloaded the right file for my system.
Why would that app have the circle/slash through it but looked like it may have run based on my system info?
Should I do anything else at this point or just leave it alone?
    Thanks.

I have a Mac Mini (mid-2011) with that same app circled out. I just left it as is in Utilities since I have no idea what it is and it's not hurting anything. Unfortunately, it won't show up in Installed Software.
You said you deleted the app file from Utilities. Is the Mac mini EFI Firmware Update.app still in your Trash? If so, why not just put it back and not worry about it?
As far as I know the firmware is installed. Check your System info by clicking  -> About This Mac -> More Info....-> System Report. Check the Hardware Overview and the Boot ROM Version:. It should be the same as my Mac Mini below if the EFI 1.3 firmware was installed.
Here's the link where the download resides. Note that it's for mid-2011 Mac Mini.

  • HT5188 Can I use Profile Manager to deploy paid Apps?

Can I import VPP codes and push the apps to the ipads without user interaction?

No, some user interaction will be required. With any MDM they will have to accept the app.
While we use the term push, the user has to accept all App installations on the device. They will have to touch install. Please read below from:
    http://krypted.com/iphone/configuring-using-profile-manager-2-in-os-x-mountain-l ion-server/
" This brings up an interesting limitation of how Profile Manager interacts with the App Store. It kinda’ doesn’t. If I were pushing apps to elementary school iPads in a 1:1 I could either use Apple Configurator (if I wanted to burn up a VPP code per student per year) or I could use iTunes (if I wanted a labor intensive process of restoring an iPad per computer rather than a parallel process). But either way, I’m gonna’ stay away from Profile Manager for apps.
So if you push an app to a device and the user taps on the app and the screen goes black then make sure the app is owned by the AppleID signed into the device. If it is, have the user open App Store and update any other app and see if the app then opens."

I plan to purchase a Mac mini and then a new iPad.  Can I use the iPad as a keyboard and screen for the Mac mini, using either the USB connector or Wi-Fi?

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi.  I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel.  Is is possible to hook these 2 up - iPad/mini, through Bluetooth?  I understand I need to use a regular monitor/keyboard/mouse on the initial install.

If you purchased Pages, Numbers or Keynote in the Mac App Store, you can install these applications for free on your other two computers. In them, open the App Store, go to Purchases tab and download them for free. Your MacBooks must be running OS X Lion or Mountain Lion

It maybe trying to boot from the incomplete install.
Try starting your Mac while holding down the Option key, it should then list all the available boot drives including the Mac OS X one. Boot from the Mac one and then you can wipe the damaged PC one or set the Mac to stay booting in to OS X.

    Generally YES.
It's possible to hold separate iTunes library's on a single machine.
Generate two new folders inside the Music folder of the Mini and name them differently; e.g. man and woman.
Copy your whole library into "man" and your wifes into "woman"
Go to sharing in the system settings of the Mini and share the Music folder in your network.
After copying the whole library's to the Mini you may point iTunes to the new location at startup by holding the option key (alt) at the keyboard.
iTunes will then ask you where the library is located.
Point it to the matching library on the Mini.
    That's all.
    Lupunus
PS ... If you both use only the Mini you have to setup a user account for each and just copy the whole library to the Music folder in particular.

    Hi Noob Søren
There are a few things that are confusing in your question.
As far as I know, you dont have to install Time Machine on this OS as it is already installed for you. You only need to connect a hard drive to your computer via firewire or usb, click on the Time Machine icon, Open Time Machine Preference in the drop down menu and select a disk: your connected hard drive.
You can of course reformat this connected device, partition it into a few volumes to organise data if you so wish.
I find it strange that your mac's hard drive is divided into two volumes... perhaps this was created through bootcamp?
You can access the configuration of your hd through Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilities.
Clicking on one of the icons on the right hand panel will bring the details of the contents of your hardDrive and volumes. From there you can decide to erase a partition, reformat etc....
If your hd contains more than one volume, and one of them is empty, you could decide to remove it. Back up all your important data before doing so.
    Hope this helps

How do I get this feature working again? I am reluctant to move to iTunes 10.7 because I don't trust Apple at the moment.

    My suggestion:
    1) Always using MAC AIR with the power plug in.
2)Don' let the power level of battory fall under 30% percentage.
3)If the MAC can't be recharged now, just let it be with power plugged, WAIT...

  • Mac Mini 10.4 install disk work with a macbook?

    Hello All,
Will my Mac Mini 10.4 install disk work with a Macbook? I believe the model is either a MB061LL/A or MB062LL/A.
    Thank You in advance!

Yes, and possibly the system that disc can install is not Intel compatible. It would have to be a late 2006 model, which was the start of the Intel series of Minis.

Everything else syncs great, and iCal syncs from my Mini to my Touch. My Touch has the latest iOS installed. I have tried rebooting my Touch, removing the sync calendars option from iTunes>Info and checking it again after applying and closing iTunes, and restarting my Mini. Any help will be appreciated!
