Mac Mini Purchase?

I  am looking to buy a Mac Mini and use it without a connected screen.  I would like to use my Ipad as a screen, is this possible.  I know the screen is small but it would work for what I need it for.  I do 90% of my work on Ipad but there is some need for a Mac, so what I am thinking this would be the cheaper solution rather than buyiong a MacBook.  ANy suggestions or ideas?

Woodmeister50 is correct about needing standard peripherals (initially) to configure your VNC solution through System Preferences Sharing. An Apple wireless keyboard and mouse may be valuable afterward.
The VNC solutions already mentioned are fine. I happen to use Remoter VNC.
Hopefully, you plan to use a 2nd generation or later iPad for interactive performance. When using my VNC solution with the original iPad, it was usable but slower than I preferred.

  • HT201897 Does a Mac Mini purchased in the USA require a power converter for operation in Europe or should I only purchase a different power cord for it?

Does a Mac Mini purchased in the USA require a power converter to operate outside of the USA or can I simply purchase a different power cord for it?

Depending on which European country (should their mains access plug/port shape vary) the
cord set with correct ends on it has to match. You can buy a cord that plugs into the Mini
where the factory cord goes, and the other end has one for the wall source shape. The wire
for the application should be able to support 110~240VAC.
With the cord or an accurate image in hand, you could either get a new cable to match both
realities (mini + wall supply mains local) or an adapter (US/Standard to EU/Local) for just
the head or input part of the original Apple cable. One plugs into the other, then into wall.
If you have a new Mini with a small modular plug/port on the computer end of the power wire,
it would have only two holes and no ground; the other end would have two prongs of equal
shape and size. Not a polarized plug and not a grounded three-prong. To get a replacement
power wire for the MINI to go from power source to the Mini is recommended, if you are going
to be staying in one location for awhile. A Travel Kit that offers no electrical conversion but only
the physical shape adapter kit, should a available in travel stores, airports; big box discount
stores, computer and electronic stores. This page shows the cord end of the appliance shapes.
The other end would be the mains shape for whichever country you are going to....
    http://www.signalandpower.com/European-Power-Cords/
So to match the country or regional power mains type is a primary concern for obtaining the
correct replacement cord to supply the Mini with local mains power. The end which plugs into
the Mini is of a certain type (numbers for EU and elsewhere are published, see link + images)
& the end that gets plugged into the mains or utility side, needs to match the local specification.
The link to Apple, to contact for Support and Service information in prior post, should be able
to help find a source for the local replacement type cord they'd sell local people with a Mini.
Apple local sources offer replacements for this purpose; and for travelers, a second cord for
a direct use (not adapter plugs) is a better bet. For those who only need a cord in two places.
If you are traveling to Denmark, UK, Swiss or other EU countries require different adapters.
Even places where the power itself may be somewhat similar. However your MINI has an
automatic power supply that will conform to that energy standard, you only need to supply a
correct non-transforming adapter. Simply a connection to adapt one shape to another.
The general purpose travel kit that is not specialized to Apple power adapters, would have a
plastic plug/adapter with the local pins on one side, and the US/standard two slots on the other.
So, no circuitry nor any other change of electrical power inside this device would be required.
    http://www.signalandpower.com/2-Prong-Plug-Adapters/
    http://www.signalandpower.com/Convert-to-Europe-CEE-716-plug/
    http://www.signalandpower.com/Swiss-AC-Power-Cords/
In other words, I believe my other post already covered this. On the ground on either end of the
path, adapters are common and the Mini does not use proprietary electrical components IF you
have one of the more recent shape aluminum models with the power supply built in. The older
Mini has the power brick and two wires. A US/Standard plug adapter to EU/Local would work in
either case, since all you'd do is plug the adapter plug into the local mains and the US plug into
that one... I see these kinds of discards for as little as 25¢ in thrift stores in Alaska. Or you can
buy a new one. Or you could get a complete cord with correct ends on it, for Mini + local mains.
Hopefully this helps somewhat. The only info missing is which EU country or region is involved.
Their shapes of plug are different, so the adapter end for local supply has to match their standard.
Swiss, Denmark, UK, and others offer different shapes and so on.
The Apple store in the location you are traveling should be able to supply you with a replacement
cable for a modern MINI, that has the correct local mains end, and the correct Apple mini end on
the opposite. Since the unit is automatically switching, the magic is done.
Since I supplied a means to locate any number of Apple stores, authorized service providers &
other Apple related vendors in my earlier reply: https://locate.apple.com/country you could contact
any of them along your route in the City in whichever EU country, to find a local MINI power cable.
    In any event, I'm done...
    Good luck and happy trails...

  • Mac Mini Purchase Question HDTV

    Hello,
I want to buy a mac mini for an entertainment computer. I think the hdmi out will be great.
All I want to do is watch movies through my samsung 55" HDTV.
I am wondering if the basic model will be enough or should I get a suped up model.
If I need a suped up model, what do I need. More RAM, Processor Power, or what? I use a shared network drive at home so storage is not an issue.
    Thanks,
    James

"Watch movies" could mean a lot of things. If you are talking about purchased iTMS content then a minimum configuration will be fine. If you are talking about movies from other sources, then it becomes harder to answer the question without knowing more about the sources.
Certain very high bit rate content, like 1080p at high frame rates and encoded in such a way that hardware decoding can't be used...movies like that could give trouble without some thought and care put into the configuration. But most likely, you will be fine with a minimum configuration.

  • New Mac Mini purchased but still have 10.8.1

I just recently purchased a new mac mini after trading in my old mac book. I used my time machine to bring up my settings and everything went smoothly. I am still unable to update to 10.8.2 and I need to do so to update my iPhoto. If I just try to buy Mountain Lion it states my computer is not compatible. Any ideas. Let me know if I need to answer any more questions.

Ok that makes sense. I just thought I mess something up when I transfered my settings from my time machine.

No it does not. The 2 are separate.
To get Pages on your Mac mini purchase it from the Mac App Store. The icon is on your Dock.

  • Mac Mini won't boot up properly

Mac Mini purchased in early 2005, Rev A I believe. I turn on computer, it stays on the gray screen for a couple of minutes at least. Then it shows the folder with blinking question mark that it can't find the start up folder. I've put in the restore CD as well as the Tiger CD and held "C," but it will not boot up from the CD so I can reinstall the OS. I've tried zapping the PRAM, nothing. It hasn't been used in a couple of years and I wanted brought it out to get it working again so I could use it.
Anyone have any other ideas to get it to boot up properly?
    Thanks!

I once had a Lexmark inkjet printer back in my college days. At Christmas time, I unplugged the thing from the socket, and left it like that for about two weeks. When I got back, the thing never worked again. So, electronics can just suddenly "go bad" out of nowhere.
As for the interconnect board. Call around to some AASPs in your area, see if any of them will be willing to sell you one. They can create a stocking order with Apple and probably have it in a day or two.

  • Mac Mini (mid 2011) ram slot has failed: Any others experiencing?

This seems similar to this problem, mentioned in a number of threads covering MacBooks, best described here: MacBook Pro loses access to 1 memory slot upon shutdown or reboot in OS X 10.8.1
I'm having the same issue with a Mid-2011 Mac Mini (purchased June 2013).  As in that linked tread, overheating after OS upgrade (in my case , Mavericks) seems to be related.  I had constant crashes at sleep beginning about three weeks ago, and three tones at boot.  For about two weeks I could get it to reboot by unplugging and giving it some time. Until today. Cleaned. Tested both chips in both possible slots, but will always get three tones when either chip is in top slot, fine when that slot is empty. Hardware test appears to just ignore an empty slot, so really not helpful (and won't boot with filled slot).
It appears the only real fix is a new logic board, which appears is almost as expensive as buying a new machine.
I'm not going to get into "loosening screws" as suggested in linked discussion, but that may work for a powerbook.
It does sounds like heat related warping. I saw early heating problems with this after 10.9.5 upgrade.  Ended up building a special vertical stand (Mini's venting is rather poor) and installed "Temperature Monitor" by Marcel Bresink Software, which I recommend, and uninstalled some things (including killing a Mac update process that was running constantly) .  This got the heat under control, but it looks like the damage was done. Now I'm running on one 8gb memory chip, which dramatically shortens the life of the machine.  It won't be a candidate for a Yosemite upgrade coming shortly.
Must say I'm pretty disappointed in "Apple quality". Had similar experience (repeated shorts of logic board, replaced 3 times) with a MacBook c.1997, when Apple Co. was looking like it might not survive, and lots of folks were having such problems.  But at least then they would repair it for free. Given the premium price (without premium quality), I think this will be my last Mac, after having started with a Plus in the 1980s.

Mac Mini mid 2011, installed 2x 4GB memory when first got this machine, has worked well till this year 2015 when it slowed way down and I found memory slot #2 was not working.  I swapped the cards and also reinstalled the original mac memory, still only half of the memory is detected in one slot.  It is always the same slot, not dependent on the memory card.  A mac mini which never gets moved.  Mar. 2, 2015

  • Can I startup with Leopard from Mac Mini using iMac G5 as display?

I'm considering a mac mini purchase after the release of leopard. I have a iMac G5 that is not cutting it for film rendering. I would like to use it as a display for my Mac mini. Can I use Startup disk and work in the Mac Mini's OS?

No, you can't use a G5 iMac as if it were the mini's boot drive and display, and even if you could, that's an incredibly expensive drive and display. It would make far more sense to sell it and use the money to purchase a fast external drive and good quality monitor for the mini.
The nearest solution allowing you to continue to use the iMac and output the mini to it is to use the iMac to control the mini using one of the many flavors of VNC. That will allow you to display the mini's output, in effect in a window on the iMac. However, while this would allow you to take advantage of the mini's processing power, performance of the network connection is likely to influence the efficiency of possible use for applications such as video project development which rely heavily on continuously streaming data.
I find it curious that the G5 iMac is so woefully ineffective in this use that you would be considering this. What specification is the iMac, what video software are you using, and in what way do you find it problematic?

  • My Mac Mini with Snow Leopard doesn't boot

When booting, I see a gray screen, a blue screen and another gray with the
little round activity meeter which suddenly stops, and the picture freezes.
Is there any good step-by-step guide for troubleshooting this?
I'm not sure I have 10.6.2, but I keep it upgraded.

Is your Mac Mini purchased new since August 28, 2009? If it is, are you using the Mac Mini Snow Leopard installer disc? Only the disc prebundled with such Mac Minis will install a Mac OS X on those Mac Minis.
If it is older, are you using the retail 10.6 installer disc which looks like * If not, only those discs, which are not labelled OEM, Upgrade, or DropIn will install 10.6 on your Mac. You can't use the disc prebundled with another Mac on it.
Use the startup manager to boot the discs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
If the hard disc is not apparent, a data recovery software may be necessary if your data is not backed up*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If your hard drive is present, read what I said earlier about booting off the correct installer disc, if the hard disk is not able to boot, and booting off the Snow Leopard installer. That will allow you to repair the directory of a backed up system. If your system is not backed up, and won't boot, then look at my backup link above to recover your system first before attempting any installation or directory repair of your hard disc. Any attempt install a new system on a hard disc that won't boot an existing system will only result in a corrupted system. Any attempt to repair a directory may result in worse issues if the hard drive is marginal. So at least having a recovered data set if not a backed up one is essential before doing any repairs on your system.

  • 1.83 GhZ Intel Mac mini crashes after Frontrow

Put your thinking caps on for this one...
My new Mac mini (purchased immediately before the new 2.0 mini release) is experiencing regular black screen feeezes / hangs / crashes with the "please reboot the computer" message on various languages.
I can make it hang by watching a few minutes of a video from iTunes or by playing a DVD.
as son as i exit frontrow it shows the decktop, i can move the mouse for 1 second, then the hard reboot message.
I have a large itunes library with the actual files on a networked NAS connected to over SMB and i have a wirelesa logitech VX revolution mouse and standard wired apple keyboard and an Airport Extreme that the mac mini is wired to.
I have run tests from the hardware cd/DVD that came with it and even replaced the 512 that came with it butno luck so I went back to the original ram. I have only had the box for a month from Mac Mall.
    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

Was the Logitech mouse driver I was using - had installed the one from the CD with the mouse (Vx nano). When I downloaded the newest from Logitech.com it stopped the issues. Sounds a lot like a Vista problem, but that was it!

  • Poor WiFi performance on new Mac Mini ?

My new mac mini purchased a few days ago (late 2009) was exhibiting abysmal WiFi performance on 802.11n 5Ghz. I was barely getting 1Mbyte/sec through it, despite good signal strength (-50db), and my iMac which is feet away on -58db is giving almost 18Mbyte/sec...
Anyway - after much gnashing of teeth, and even placing the mini next to my extreme basestation I gave up, then tried, out of desperation, resetting the PRAM... Fixed!
Why on earth a brand new machine should need this doing, I'm not sure, but the old Alt-Cmd-P-R at boot up, waiting for the second BONG, and then letting it continue, fixed everything, and it now zooms along as fast as my other Macs.
Just for info - hope it helps someone!

These are pings from my iMac to .02 (mbpro) and .11 macmini
the mbpro is sat right next to the mac mini... rebooting the mini sorts this out... Come on, somebody must have this problem as well?

  • Wiping and recycling old Mac Mini

I'm cleaning clutter out of my house, and ran across my old Mac Mini, purchased about 10 years ago.  I need to wipe it and get it recycled, but I'm not sure about the wipe part.  I no longer have the keyboard or mouse.  (I use a Macbook Pro now).  Is this something I could get done at the Apple store, and how much might it cost?  I don't have a lot of time to mess with it myself, just need to get it done.

Apple has their own recycling program and they will wipe the data for you.
    http://www.apple.com/recycling/
    or
Gazelle.com is a website that will buy your old devices or computers and wipe the data for you as well. Sometimes with older models they do not offer a price for the device. If that is the case with you Mac Mini I would go with Apples recycling program.

  • Kernel Panics-Brand New Mac Mini

I am experiencing ongoing Kernel Panics on a new Mac Mini (purchased in July 2012). Running Mountain Lion, 8 gig RAM (Apple Branded). What I've tried to fix it:
Took to Apple Store, hardware test: Passed
    Reinstall of Mountain Lion
Uninstalled various 3rd party software including: LogMeIn, PS3 Media Server, Fuse, NTFS+ (don't recall exact name), DVD Fab.

Big ole' me too here. Tried on 3 different Mac minis. First 2 were originally Mac mini servers that were reformatted and Base OSX 10.8.2 installed, no server. Lots of automatic reboots. Only app added was FM Server. These were installed from scratch, no user migration, no other apps installed. Last Mac mini was a straight non-server, brand new off the shelf, only FMServer installed (and FM Pro - not running). Getting reboots from kernel panic several times a day. All these Mac minis had SSD drives. I have Time Machine running, but its set to ignore the FM Server folder. FMS is set to back-up the DBs to a FW800 connected drive. Apple Display connected via Thunderbolt -not sure any of this matters. (Also repaired permissions, ran fsck, Safe Boot, etc...).
Don't know much about tracing the reason for a kernel panic but saw this near the top:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: java
It's been happening for months, been banging my head aginast the wall thinking it was something I've done...

  • Store Photos on external LaCie hard drive vs. Mac Mini?

I have a Mac Mini purchased in 2006 and a LaCie external hard drive. The combination was bought primarily for video editing. Now I am considering transferring a large number of jpeg photos from my PC. I have been told that it is better to put them on the Mac Mini rather than the LaCie. Any comments?

If you have a lot of them you would probably be better off storing them on the external drive.
However, no matter where they physically reside, don't forget to have two or three backups just in case of a catastrophe.
