Mac Mini QT 5.1 Output

Hey guys,
I did a search before posting but no threads were conclusive for my requirements.
My set up is Mac mini --> Optical cable --> Amp
Basically i managed to acheive 5.1 through dvd player app (perfect) and vlc (which is flaky sometimes).
but i want to do this through quicktime and front row too!
i mean it ***** that im restricted to stereo.
I followed these steps
http://geekwithfamily.com/2007/07/05/home-theater/howto-5-easy-steps-to-output-d olby-digital-from-quicktime-player/
but i just got an annoying fuzz, it didnt work for me. (unless i did it wrong?)
i ended up reverting straight after to restore my 2.0
so does anyone know how i can sort this one out please?
thanks!

I followed these steps...
Wow, very interesting. I've never seen anyone claim to be able to get the QuickTime Player application to play multi-channel audio without VERY specific hardware. I didn't even think it was possible. Usually, the QuickTime Player application requires a hardware audio converter that has the three mini-jack type audio outputs to route the multi-channel audio out. (For example, a device like , which has been discontinued.) Honestly, I don't think it can be done, but I'd be willing to give it a try following those instructions tomorrow (it's too late for me tonight).

  • Intel Mac mini and widescreen TV output (analog)

I just replaced my 1.25 GHz mini with a dual-core Intel one, and are really disappointed that the wide-screen resolution options are nowhere to be found. I'm using the Apple DVI-to-Video adapter with an S-Video cable.
On the G4 Mac mini, I would get 640x480 (NTSC 4:3), 800x480 (NTSC 16:9), 768x576 (PAL 4:3) and 1024x576 (PAL 16:9). Together with Overscan and Best for Video, I got a really nice picture on my 16:9 CRT TV (can display PAL and NTSC in either 4:3 or 16:9).
With the Intel Mac mini, I only get 640x480.
(The other available resolutions do not match with the actual NTSC or PAL frequencies or aspect ratios. For example, 720x480 or 720x576 is used as the pixel format for some digital media, but the pixels are not square, and so far, all software expects display pixels to be square. So it's actually quite useless.)
Is there a trick to get those resolutions to show up in Displays and become usable?

1.) I am using either 1920x1080 (interlaced) which is the resultion that has the worst problem with text sharpness. Now, I have discovered the Zoom feature in OSX and I can use it to some degree to make things readable. This may be my best option.
2.) I have done the calibraton and it does look quite a bit better. Those the DVD output is good but not great.
3.) Apparently, from what I have read, this is a common problem. Maybe a driver upgrade from Apple or Intel could fix?
I bought a Philips DVI cable. I know it's not the best but it should suffice. Monster cables seem to be overpriced. I plan to hook my PC to my HDTV with the same cable. My ATi card supports HD resolutions as well.
I also hooked the mini to my CRT that I have on my Dell and it looks very good there. I am impressed that OSX adjusts the resoltions that it can display upon boot. Even which switching displays.

  • Mac Mini Singel Core Sound Output problem

Mac Mini is connected to a amplifier, the sound-output is put on 100% this works perfect, but after shutdown the soound-output is set to 50% is it possible to set this always on 100 % ?
    thanks

Is the mini connected via the standard analog 1/8" audio jack or via a digital cable?
You could try resetting PRAM from this Apple doco:
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

  • Mac Mini (2009) to video output - surely it must be possible?

I've just bought a Mac Mini to replace my Apple TV, in an attempt to get a single Mac running my entire home entertainment setup. I have a 5-USB Mac Mini, 2.26 GHz core 2 duo, 4 GB RAM, 120 GB HD.
I'm trying to connect to a 6-year-old Hitachi Illumina projector. My first attempt was with Apple's Mini-DVI to VGA adapter, and whilst this worked, it turns out that my widescreen projector (for reasons known only to Hitachi) doesn't advertise any widescreen resolutions - it's 1024x768 or similar all the way. (The projector's native resolution is WVGA at 854x480). I've tried SwitchResX, but I can't get the projector to do anything other than 4:3 or similar no matter what I try.
Next, I tried Apple's Mini-DVI to Video adapter. Unfortunately, I didn't read the description for that adapter, so didn't see that it doesn't work with the Mini. I just assumed that since the Mini has Mini-DVI, and since it's the ideal machine for a media center, it would work. But it doesn't - the adapter isn't detected by the Mini at all.
So my question is: is there any way to get video (either composite or S-Video) out of the Mini? Would an Apple DVI to Video adapter, plugged into the Mini's "Mini-DVI to DVI" adapter, do the job?
My projector has Composite, S-Video, Component and VGA connectors on the back (no HDMI). There has got to be a way to get this to work... any ideas much appreciated!
Message was edited by: David Addey

I notice you mention being limited to a 4:3 resolution with the VGA connection. If you use composite or S-video you will be using an SD signal, which will normally just be 640x480, which is a 4:3 aspect ratio. The VGA and component connections should offer the highest resolutions. What is the model number of your projector, as I can find very little information about the Illumina series - and what I can find relates to 4:3 only.

  • Mac Mini, HDMI, VLC, not outputting Dolby 5.1

The Mac Mini 2010 has a HDMI port but it appears that it will not pass through Dolby encoded sound.
The solution is to connect your hdmi to a minidisplay port to hdmi adapter.
Then go to utilities/audio mini set up/ and select HDMI and 48000 and 2ch -24bit
Then VLC will export sound to your home theater amplifier in Dolby 5.1 surround.
Othe Mac models may have an HDMI port as well that does not support Dolby 5.1.

FWIW, I have a 2010 Mini and am going direct HDMI-HDMI
to my Yamaha receiver and have no issues with passing
Dolby5.1 or DTS to it, with MIDI settings at 2ch 24bit/48kHz.
It has been set like this since I bought it new.  Dolby and DTS
have passed through problem free with iTunes, XBMC,
and originally with PLEX (decided early on the XBMC was the
    best choice).
This was also though the likes of Snow Leopard, Lion, and
    Mountain Lion.

  • Mac mini audio output

Hi, i've seen this interesting program http://www.algoriddim.net/index.html
    for djs.
These djs program usually use to way to work:
    - dual sound card
    - mutiple output on a single sound card
This program use the second approach.... but mac mini has only an output.
I remember that my last pc was able, using a tune program, to convert an audio input to an audio output to get 5.1 system.
I wonder to know if it is possible to convert the input to output with some kinda program, or is there any way to get working the pre-cue with a mini.

hello mini users with the "no audio output" problem
it seems that there are faulty output jacks in the macbook and the mac mini
there are two things you can try:
i tried everything and began thinking about what new software i had installed. it was "macam" which enables you to use older webcams on OSX. i needed that to use my webcam on skype.
macam installs a file called "macam.component"
if you have the same, do this - take that file out of:
    (your hard drive)/library/quicktime - macam.component
and just put it on your desktop
restart, then in your sound pref's choose your audio output (if doesn't work restart again)
the first time i took it out, i had my sound back instantly, another time i had to choose audio output in sound prefs. you kind of have to try different things. after you get your sound back, you can put back "macam.component" to use your webcam.
it seems macam causes the problem, the two can not work at the same time.
the second thing: if you dont have "maccam" try plugging and unplugging output jack a few times and restarting until you have sound.
the problem still could be with the OSX 10.4.10 update / quicktime...or maybe even a hardware problem like others with macbooks were saying (with the red light), not sure.
people with macbooks and who have the red light on, say to use a paperclip to turn off the switch inside.
my mini does not have a red light on. i tried using a paperclip but it doesnt work.
hope this helps, beleive me i feel your pain!!!!
what good is a computer without sound?
extremely annoying problem that i hope apple looks into and fixes

  • 2010 mac mini hdmi sound output

    Hi,
i have following audio setup via hdmi of my mac mini:
    mac mini -> yamaha rx-v 665 -> philips tv
If only the receiver is turned on i have it as display and hdmi audio output device with 8-ch sound output. But as soon as i turn on my tv, my mac mini switches the sound output to my tv with only 2-ch sound output.
Anyone an idea how to prevent switching my mac mini to the tv sound output?
    thx

I am trying to get my Mac Mini (2010) to use the speakers I have connected for my Samsung 40" TV through my Yamaha receiver as well. I connected to the TV to my Mini via HDMI thinking it would take care of video AND audio, but I cannot get the audio to function. Do I need to connect from the headset port to my receiver? If so, into which port?
My dream of making the mini and TV combo is taking a hit.

  • Mac Mini s-video vs. PowerBook s-video quality

Is there notable difference between Mac Mini's s-video output (with the DVI to s-video adapter) and PowerBook G4 1.67 s-video output?
I'm asking this because I've found PowerBook s-video output to be quite good. I can easily use my Powerbook on a CRT 28" WS TV. If Mac Mini delivers same quality, I'm quite sure I will get one to replace DVD, CD and digi-tv on the living room.
This subject briefly surfaced on another thread, but I decided to ask it more visibly.

    Yep,
I have the powerbook 1.67 and a mac mini core duo, the powerbook handles s-video really well in terms of resolutions however the mini fails, it cannot manage anamorphic displays which are rubbish if youve got a widescreen tv. However in terms of quality they are both great even though the powerbook has 128mb video card the mini easily matches.

  • Mac Mini and my TV

I was entertaining the idea of purchasing a Mac Mini and hooking it up to my TV.  I have all the ports (HDMI) necesarry for this style of configuration.  My only question is resolution.  What should I be looking for with regards to resolution so that if I do hook up my Mac Mini to the TV, I get a clear picture...

    Hi Scorogers
I am thinking about going down the same line wanting to upgrade the resolution from my ATV2.
The Panasonic TV's HD resolution is 1920X1080. The Mac Mini on HDMI will output 1920X1200 and on Thunderbolt even higher so I do not see any reason for not getting a great picture. Hopefully someone on here has it setup and could just confirm the same..........

  • Mac Mini doesn't like Philips  32PF9830

    Hi all,
I have a problem when connecting my Mac-Mini with the Philips LCD-TV via the DVI. I only get a blank screen, what ever I try.
    Here is my history:
I bought a DVI-D (Dual Link, 3m = 10inch?) cable and connected it to the 9830. Immediatley I saw the Mac-Os desktop, but the image was flickering (it looked like a wrong frequency) So I changed the resolution to 1920 x 1080 60Hz. I got an Black screen. Then I rebooted the Mac and I saw the grey Startup screen (the apple with an circle) and then again a black screen. This was also the last time I saw an Image coming from the Mac Mini via the DVI output.
Then I switched to a VGA cable and connected the VGA Cable via 2 DVI-VGA adpaters to the 9830 this only works if I boot the mac without the VGA cable connected and then after the reboot is finished connect the cable to the Mac. What I then see is a 800 x 600 VGA resolution. If i then switch to another resolution I receive again a black screen.
The Mac Mini DVI output is working because I have verified it by connecting it to another LCD display.
I also verified the Philips DVI Input, by connecting it to a PC with DVI video-card also working fine (I experienced a bad image at 1980 x1080 too).
I also tried an DVI-I cable (Single Link, 1,8m) but no improvement. I played around with Switchres x and displayconfigx. Nothing really worked.
I use VNC, so I can easily switch the res at my MAC from my Laptop. I see that when I'm switch the input at my TV the Mac recognizes that there is a LCD display and switches automatically over to a 1280 x 740 resolution (I see this in the VNC screen) but the TV still stays black.
MacOS and Switchres and displayconfigx are detecting the LCD TV correctly. I get only those resolutions displayed in the System settings that are specified by Philips for this TV.
I really don't know what to check else .Every thing works fine but a MAC - Philips connection simply doesn't work.
Here is the DDC file, If anyone can have a look at this or maybe have another suggestion, that would be great.
BTW: It took me so long to convince my wife to buy a Mac Mini for the living room. Now it looks like my wife was all the time right. I hate loosing against my wife !

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Concerning "Shouldn't here also appear the video formats ? How does the Mac detects the other formats, if they are not in the DDC ?"
Those are standard video timings and they pre-exist inside Mac OS, though I don't know exactly which file contains them. Honestly I don't know how the Mac can know which video timings your TV can work from because DDC is not supported over video connections like S-Video and Composite Video as far as I am aware. Perhaps when you previously made a DVI connection and the EDID was read, the information about supported ranges in Descriptor #3 (near the bottom of the EDID file) was matched to the pre-existing video timings inside Mac OS and only those which matched up to your TV are presented in Display Preferences. I am just guessing.
I doubt cable length is giving problems. True the mini has poor drive out the VGA port but I have not heard the same of the DVI port. I use an inexpensive 3m DVI cable with my mini and TV it works without issue.
One other thing you might want to try since you are seeing video timings which you would like to access when making a DVI or VGA connection...as far as I know, if you boot a Mac and hold down Command-Opt-A-V keys all together while the Mac starts up, this will force the Mac to treat the attached display as an AV display. In that case the video timings you see may become available under Display Preferences even though you are making a "PC" connection (VGA or DVI) and not a video connection. I am not sure this will work but it is worth a try.

  • HT4534 Mac Mini HD Video Conferencing

I am considering purchase of a mac-mini for video conferencing.  This article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4534?viewlocale=en_US) refers to "built in camera".  Of course, the mac-mini has no built in camera.  I would be using my HDTV for a monitor.  Can I use the Logitech c910 & the mini for HD Facetime?

I also have a mac mini and am using the Logitech C920.  At the beggining, I had issues with its built in mics not working with FaceTime, but I found a solution for the problem and now all the programs that interface with the camera work great (FT, Skype, iMovie, etc).  If you do buy the C920 run into the same issue that I had with the mic not working, here is the quick solution for the problem:
Cause of Problem:  The Logitech C920 camera/mic operates on a 2ch-16bit integer.  You can verify this by opening "finder + Utilities + Audio MIDI Setup" and then select the HD Pro Webcam C920 and look at the "Input" Default values.
The Mac Mini's "Built-In Output" and "Buiilt-In Input" formats were set for 2ch-24 bit integer.  Therefore, the default input and output were out of sync with the C920 default format.
Solution:  Change the Mac Mini's default Output to "2ch-16 bit integer".  You don't need to change the default Input but it doesn't hurt to do so.  Once you do this, the camera and it's built in mics work on facetime and all other video chat applications.

  • How about the Mac mini as an Apple TV with a HD?

Has anyone tried a Mac mini with its HDMI output as a substitute for the now old model Apple TV? Yes, it is more expensive and needs a keyboard but it has a huge HD that could hold all your music photos and video and be located right at your TV. Once it booted you could use Front Row and a remote to control it. Once I saw that the Mac mini came with an HDMI output, I wondered if the days were numbered for Apple TV.
    Any obvious downsides?

Has anyone tried a Mac mini with its HDMI output as a substitute for the now old model Apple TV?
Yes, I did and it works great. It's a Mac, so it has the OS X desktop rather than the ATV media browser, but playing HD video through it's HDMI port is great. It can play all of my iTunes videos in addition to just about everything an ATV can't play. I'm using it mainly to watch Hulu Plus at present.
It has been correctly pointed out in the past that some HD rentals from the iTunes store are available only through the ATV, but the new ATV does not have a hard drive, so direct purchases will be impractical. I expect that rental restriction will change in iTunes 10 as all content for the new ATV will have to stream from another location.

  • Mac Mini - Firewire Issue?

    Dear All,
I have a 'late 2009' Mac Mini (2.53 GHz, 4GB RAM) and I think I may have an issue with the Firewire from the computer.
I have an iSight web cam plugged in to the Mac Mini's Firewire socket via a simple 400 to 800 adapter. Everything works as it should, but I've noticed that the iSight is receiving power all the time, whether the Mac Mini is on or off. Is this normal behaviour?
Can anyone confirm whether or not this model of Mac Mini is supposed to output power to Firewire devices all the time, whether on or off?
I want to know whether this is a feature or a fault before I report the issue to Apple. Also, will any harm come to my iSight by being powered up all the time?
It may be unrelated, but I've noticed that I get fan noise from the Mini all the time now. When the computer was new, it was silent under normal use. Could this indicate a more general problem with my mini?
Thanks for your help in anticipation.
    Best Wishes,
    Richard

    Dear All,
Again, thanks for much for your replies; it is really appreciated.
You're welcome, Richard, and thanks for the feedback!
Thanks also for confirming that there's nothing wrong with my Mac - I was beginning to get worried!
If you ever have serious electrical concerns, I strongly recommend that you unplug your Mac until you can have it examined by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
I'll give the vacuuming along the bottom of the computer a go; is there any risk from static or harming the Mac min that I should be aware of?...
There are instructions for how to clean each Mac in the users guide manual that came with every Mac I have ever owned. Check yours to be sure you are within the mini's instructions. If you still have problems or concerns about cleaning your mini, ask your AASP.
I have never owned a mini, but I regularly clean and vacuum my Macs. Here are my guidelines:
     • keep the covers are properly in place,
     • keep the Mac connected to a properly grounded electric outlet,
     • do not insert the vacuum nozzle or dust brush into the Mac's vents or other openings.
These rules have kept my desktop Macs safe and working.
    DaddyPaycheck has offered mini-specific suggestions.
If fan noise bothers you, also check placement: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22804
