Mac mini refuses to read original or retail install Disc.

Alright here's the full story,
I got my mac mini a little over a year ago. It worked just fine but then one day I put a CD in and it refused to read it or eject it. After a tough battle I eventually bested the beast and got the CD out of there, luckily it was still under warranty and I got it fixed and the drive replaced. Just the other day I decided to try and install a copy of windows xp on my mac mini but it wouldn't let me partition the hard drive. I tried to boot from a disk and see if I could do anything from there but low and behold it can't read the disk, in fact it won't read my retail Snow Leopard disk or the original install disk. To be precise if I put in any install disc the computer will just automatically eject it after a while regardless if it's starting up or already running. I have tried holding down c and option at start up but still get the same result. If anyone has any advice it would be very much appreciated as the warranty is now up and I would very much like to not have to take it in for repairs.

The Superdrives are garbage, always have been. Slow, undependable. I'd recommend an external drive from anyone other than Apple.

  • My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.

My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.
I used an iMac G3 (2001) -- the ones that looked like a big pod -- running on OS X and saved files to TDK  CD-R, 700 MB disks, which worked fine. Now that I have a Mac Mini (model number  A1347) I cannot get this computer to read those disks, made on the iMac G3.  Once inserted each disk will open and I can retrieve files for a short period, then the problems start. The computer makes some noises, the beach-ball/pinwheel goes around and I cannot get the files to open or the disk to eject. After a while the disk does eject -- to my relief. I keep using Control+E until ejection happens.
My Mac Mini (2010-2011) is hooked up to a View Sonic HDMI LED monitor, an iOmega external hard-drive for backing up, an Epson Stylus C88 Plus printer and to the internet by a fibre 10MB feed. The Mac Mini runs on OS X version 10.6.8 Snow Leopard: Processor Speed:2.66 GHz
I took the Mac Mini to an Apple retailer and he hooked the computer up to one of his monitors and it read the TDK disks just fine. I am now using Sony CD-RW, 700 MB disks, but I would prefer to use my TDKs because I have such a large pile of blank ones to use and there are those TDK disks with information that I want to look at from time to time. Can anyone tell me what to do?

Try disconnecting everything attached to the Mini except the monitor.
If that doesn't work, try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later. If successful, copy the files to the original account Public/Dropbox.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Mac Mini won't read external hard drive

Hello, I have an external Toshiba hard drive and my Mac Mini will not read it.  It was originally used on Windows.  I plugged the hard drive into my Macbook and it worked as a read-only device.  I can take stuff off of it but can not write stuff onto it on my Macbook.  I want to use it so I can back up files on my Mac Mini, but it will not read it.  I know I have to format it to make it writable with Mac, but I want to make it a read only device on my Mac Mini because I want to back up all the data already on it and my Mac Mini has 400gb of its hard drive available.  How can I get my Mac Mini to read the Hard Drive?

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the System Management Controller
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

My Mac mini isn't reading my camcorder. Says no device found.  I'm trying to upload my Christmas video to iMovie but it says no device connected.

Since nothing connects, try resetting the SMC.
I am not trying to be funny, but be sure the Mac Bluetooth is turned on...

  • My mac mini won't read or load Turbo Tax 2012 cd.

My Mac mini will not read or load the CD for TurboTax 2012.  Any suggestions?

Just ran into this Turbo Tax 2012 requirement with a friend's 2008 iMac running 10.5.8. She only had 1GB memory in the iMac, which is the Snow Leopard minimum requirement.
After full install of 10.6.3, and (free) software updates, it was a 10.6.8 machine. With just the operating system running, there was 300 MB of the 1 GB memory remaining. Turbo Tax 2012 requires 512 MB of memory, and until the memory was upgraded on this machine, Turbo Tax was erratic due to limited memory. Upgraded to 4GB of memory and the both the iMac and Turbo Tax performance improved substantially.

You can do it. This article from Macworld will be helpful to you:

    I recommend the "brute-force" method.
Just make sure you have your data backed up properly!

  • Mac Mini drive not reading CD's

I have had my Mac Mini several years and have always been able to insert a CD into the drive and upload the songs into iTunes.  Suddenly the drive refuses to recognize the CD and after a few seconds spits it out - with no message.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

    1. Clean the CD > How to Clean a DVD or CD Disc ?
    2. Clean your Disc Drive > CD and DVD Lens Cleaning Kit
    3. Try some different CDs to see if your Disc Drive is seeing other CDs.

  • Mac mini refuses to recognize existing TM backup set

I just got my mac mini fixed with a new logic board, and I have it connected to a 250GB external FW drive. Time machine was running on a partition on the external drive quite happily since I bought it in November, but since getting it back from the repair, it refuses to recognize that there is an existing backup set on the drive. The hard drive is identical after the repair, machine name is identical, etc.
The machine name is "Wintermute" and there is an existing directory in Backups.backupdb - when I try to run a backup run, it creates a directory "Wintermute 2" and bails out with insufficient disk space (it's trying to do a full backup)
If I right-click Time Machine in the dock and select "Browse Other Time Machine disks" I can select the existing backup and it seems to be OK. However, I can't seem to continue adding to that backup set!
    Any suggestions?

Here are the contents of my backup volume if it helps at all:

  • Mac Mini no longer reads or writes DVD-R DL discs

My mac mini stopped reading and writing dual layer DVD-R disks about a year ago for no reason, even ones that IT created in the first place. Is my drive faulty or is there some setting that got changed when I upgraded to Lion and then Mountain Lion?

It's unlikely that the upgrades had anything to do with the problem, slim superdrives are just not all that reliable.
You might try a few tricks before taking it in for service or springing for a Mac compatable external DVD drive.
    1. Reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller
    2. Reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    3. Clean it, for example with a > Memorex OptiDisc CD/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner

  • Mac Mini will not read my OS 10.5 disk

I am trying to do a complete erase and install on my Mac Mini and whenever I put the disk in it spends a couple of seconds trying to read it then spits the disk back out.  Is this something that can be fixed?  Is it something that I can fix?  Is there a way to erase and install without the disk?
In case you are wondering I want to do this because my computer is running very slow and gets very bogged down when I run just a few programs at once.  I cleaned out most of my HD but it didn't take long before it had filled again.  Regardless it didn't even seem to make much difference.  I was told by an Apple Genius that doing an a clean install was the best option to clean it all out and get it working the right way again.
My Mac Mini is several years old, and I'd love to get a new computer, but I can't really afford that right now, so if someone could help me do this I would be very appreciative.

Is it a G4 or Intel mini ?

  • Mac Mini won't read my external drive

Bought a Seagate 500GB external harddrive for my mac mini, and stored about 100GB of information in the harddrive. Now, the mini won't read the external harddrive. I am wondering if there is a way to retrieve it... Can someone help me? I don't think I can afford to loose 100GB of information.... Any help is greatly appreciated!

Clearly it has worked previously since you have data on it, but you haven't indicated what model of Mac mini you have (which can make a difference in terms of troubleshooting steps) and what circumstances surrounded the 'disappearance' of the drive - particularly as Boece says, whether it was disconnected (or powered down) without being first ejected from the desktop.
If the drive isn't being seen in the profiler, there is a possibility that the drive is not, in itself, faulty. A damaged cable, a faulty hub or a problem with the system's USB ports could be responsible. Since you don't give any detail about your system, it's hard to focus better on advising appropriate steps - however, if you are using a hub, remove it and connect the drive directly to the system, preferably using a different cable. If it mounts, then it was the cable or hub. If not, then open Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) and see if it appears in the drive list on the left.
If there's no hub and the cable checks out OK, then you might next perform a PMU reset (if it's a G4 mini) or SMC reset (if it's an Intel).
To reset the PMU for a G4 mini
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If those steps don't help resolve the problem, post back with more information.

  • Mac Mini doesn't read DVD's

When I insert any DVD into my Mac Mini it says Disc not able to be read by this computer.
It reads CDs fine.. I tried to start the DVD player app and it gives an initialization error and that a valid DVD player could not be found..
    It does have a DVD drive:PiOnEeR DvD-Rw DvR-K06
Any idea why it would read CDs not DVDs and appear to have lost all DVD functionality??

  • My Mac mini won't read my SanDisk ultra MicroSDHC through the SD adapter.

I have a SanDisk ultra 32gb MicroSDHC card that I use with my Galaxy S4, and which came with an SD adapter. The problem is that when I try to Plug the card, through the adapter, into the SD port on my mac mini it simply won't read. nothing shows up on my desktop or launchpad and also no windows pop up. Does anyone have any solutions? I have a late 2012 Mac mini running Maverick version 10.9.3.

What is format of the card?
    Does it appear in Finder?
Likely the format is not readable by the Mac
Open Disk Utility and see if it is listed there
