Mac Mini rejoining preferred wireless network

I have a Mac Mini Aug 2011, i7 with all of the lastest updates, 10.7.2.
Whenever I reboot, it doesn't reconnect to the preferred hidden wireless network automatically. I have to go into Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar and manually and select my wireless network, and then it connects. There are no other locations or preferred networks that appear in the network preferences aside from my network. It receives signal with full strength since it is about 10 ft away from the Time Capsule.
I have several other Mac laptops around the house that connect to this same network with no problems. I don't wish to unhide my network, or remove encryption to solve this. I have seen this similar issue with MacBook Pros, but they suggest removing other preferred networks, or unhidding the network, which don't apply in my case.

Here's something that worked for me:
Network Preferences > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Prefered Networks >
If the network that you're trying to use is in that list, but does not reconnect on start up, delete it from the Prefered Networks list.  Then let the Network preferences "re-see" your network and add it back to your prefereed networks list.
Remember to make your network Visible while letting your Mac see it, then turn visibility back off.
Hope this helps!

  • Issues with my Mac Mini & a Linksys Wireless Network

I have Linksys WRT54GS router hooked up to a Sprint DSL modem. Attached to the router is my homemade PC a Pentium 4 3.06 GHz HT with a Linksys wireless card installed, another homemade AMD computer connected via Ethernet, and I am attempting to get my Mac Mini on board too. The network is set to 128 Bit WEP security with a password. Both of the PCs are connected fine getting good speeds. My issue is that on the Mac when I attempt to connect it does one of the following things: (1) deems my password as invalid, (2) says there is "an error joining (network name)", (3) when I change the WEP Personal to WEP 40/128-bit hex will not allow me to type more than one character, or (4) when I change the WEP Personal to WEP 40/128-bit ACSII it either allows me to type the password and doesn't allow me to press OK or won't allow me to type a password at all. I did not attempt the LEAP because I don't know of a User name, just a password. Any suggestions on this dilema? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to the Forum
I found my Macs prefer using WPA encryption and they do this with ease. I had loads of issues when I first set up the LinkSys and attempted to use WEP, besides WPA is a lot more secure.

  • Mac Mini (2012) as Wireless Gateway

I want to turn my mac mini into a wireless gateway. I  have "pf" I need to know how to turn on wireless ap mode on? What command line tools are available? OpenBSD has "hostapd" for this.
I plan to have my mini serve as my gateway router as well as media and file server.
    Thanks!

what you have done is allowed resource sharing so that another computer can share the broadband connection via an ad hoc peer to peer connection.
however, this mini is not acting as a router, nor is it designed to, as it does not posses the server software. OS X Server does not currently run on Intel processors. if it did, then the Mini would be able to act as a router plus all of the other network security features that are available in OS X Server. Mac is likely to migrate all servers to the Intel platform, however when they do, it remains to be seen which intel platform that will be and if it will be compatible with Core (1) Duo / Solo processors.
wireless routers can be had for under $50 with the features that you seek.

  • Exporting wifi configuration including preferred wireless networks.

    Hello experts,
I am new bee in Mac world therefore I am asking sample question. I am using Macbook Pro 10.6.4.
If I export Airport network configuration from Network preference then It exports only 802.1x configuration.
    My questions are:
    1. How to export network configuration including preferred wireless networks list like networksetup -listpreferredwirelessnetworks <device name> command?
    2. How to write .networkConnect file which should have preferred wireless networks list?
    Regards,
    Anand Choubey

Well , since this issue got seriously on my nervers and took me a day trying things out with no luck, i studied a bit of shell programming and wrote a script to configure my net on boot, copied it with the correct permissions in /etc/rc.d/    , added it in my daemons at rc.conf, and there you go! Net on boot finally : -).
    #!/bin/sh
echo "sleeping to ensure network is up"
    /bin/sleep 2
    until [ "$(ifconfig wlan0 | grep -c "UP")" != "0" ]
    do
echo "waiting for wlan0 interface to get UP"
    /bin/sleep 2
    done
echo "checking if wlan0 is associated "
    while [ "$(iwconfig wlan0 | grep -c "Access Point: Not-Associated")" != "0" ]
    do
    $(iwconfig wlan0 essid Virus_Home)
echo "sleeping for 20 seconds to give hardware some time to associate "
    /bin/sleep 20
    done
    exit 0
However i dont concider my solution  elegant , so if anyone can figure out why net doesnt get configured correctly on boot without my script i would love to know as well.
    enjoy,

  • None of your preferred wireless networks available but they are.

I have a brand new MacbookPro with retina display and Ive had it for about a month now.... reciently every time i start up my computer i get a message that none of my prefered wireless networks are available and it gives me a list of networks. I can clearly see my network listed even though I got this message. Ive tried everything from deleting the prefered wireless networks and reconnecting to them to changing my router ssid and security settings. I'm kinda fed up with this at the moment especially since this is the third or fourth time I've had to search this forum for a problem with this computer.

No... It only happens when i log on initialy and if i leave the window long enough it eventually connects after a minute or two... it knows the network and it has the password saved. This is completely different than the behavior it displayed when i first got the computer even though my settings havent changed. The window is just an extra annoyance which causes connecting to the network to take a minute or two. This is disapointing considering macs are praised for their rapid DHCP.

  • WRT110 Can't connect MAC and PC to wireless network at the same time.

I installed a WRT110 router on my son-in-law's MAC sometime back and at the time configured it to have the MAC connected via Ethernet.  My PC laptop worked fine with it in the wireless mode.  Recently we changed the MAC to wireless newtworking and removed the Ehthernet connection.  Now if the MAC connects to the wireless network first and then I attempt to connect with my PC laptop the PC cannot find the network and the MAC loses connection.  If I shut my PC down the MAC will not find the network until it is put to sleep and reawakened.  If the MAC is put to sleep my PC wil immediately find the network. If I first connect my PC and then awaken the MAC both work fine.  I've checked all of the router's setup settings and they seem to be OK.  I am not MAC savvy and my son-in-law is a neophyte at computers so we are really helpless when something doesn't work.  Help will be appreciated.

I tried this setup change after reading another similar post.  It didn't help.  One thing I had wrong in the first post is that neither computer will connect to the wireless net after we experience the wireless failures until both are turned off, at least that is what happened after making the suggested changes.  Is this a WRT110 issue?  Seems there are quite a few posts similar to mine.

If you mean AppleCare, then I would believe the answer will be yes.
First make sure you have a full backup of everything on your Mac, then run, don't walk to your nearest Apple store.
Note: Due to your Mac now being in computer years, somewhat elderly, Apple may not have the require parts in stock. This will either mean you might have to leave it with them for a number of days, or maybe they will offer you a new Mac mini. While a new Mac mini (if offered) might be a welcome possibility be aware that the new Mac mini no longer has a CD/DVD drive and it comes with Mac OS X Lion and as a result might not run some of your old software.

  • Airport will not connect to my preferred wireless network

    Hi,
I set up a wireless network in my house. My mac connected has connected to it before, but when i had to restart my computer I can no longer connect to it again.
I have added it under my preferred networks and it is top of the priority list.
Every time i try to reconnect it, my comp tells me "connection timedout", therefore not letting me reconnect to it. My router etc appears to be working properly as i can connect via ethernet.
I have tried deleting the preferred network and re-adding it, and rebooting my computer. Nothing seems to be working.
Someone who know about computers please help i have work that needs to be done!
    Thanks!

    Thanks, but it didn't work.
My mac remembers it, but doesn't remember the settings (ie on the preferred list). It tells me that none of my preferred networks are available, even though my network is still in the preferred list.
So i click on my network when it tells me that none of them are available and re-enter my password and it always says connection timeout.
It was working perfectly earlier on today, like i said when i restarted my computer, it automatically connected to another network and i haven't been able to get on to mine since!

  • Macbook pro can't find preferred wireless network

My father signed onto my wireless network using his own laptop (PC) with my passkey.  Then after he had been on I tried to connect to the internet with my macbook (and iPhone) and my network was gone.  If I look at the list of available networks it lists my neighbor's (which usually doesn't happen) and the name of my father's computer but ours is gone.  If I go to my preferred networks, I see mine listed but then when I try and connect to it is says it cannot be found.  I tried creating it again but then when I enter the password it says it's invalid.  I tried connecting to the network under my dad's computer's name to see if somehow the name changed on its own but it says invalid password as well.  Any ideas?

"If I look at the list of available networks it lists my neighbor's (which usually doesn't happen) and the name of my father's computer but ours is gone."
Your father's computer should not be showing up in the list of networks unless he mucked around with your router. Log in to your router's admin pages and see what the issues are.

  • Mac Mini *half* loses all network connections

Cheers folks, new one on me.  I have a Mac Mini 2.26Ghz Core 2 Duo. It's running a fully-updated 10.6.8.  It's connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme which is extending an 802.11N network from another Airport Extreme elsewhere which is connected to the router.  The network is set with IPv6 *off* and is configured to run over Ethernet normally (this is because a wired-only NAS is connected to the same Airport Extreme as the Mini).
Here's the symptom, and it's an odd one for me:   Every couple of days, the entirety of the Mac OS X layer (not the BSD layer) will lose network connectivity.  More specifically:
No web browser will work ('Not connected to the Internet').
Home Sharing, served on this Mini, will cease to be visible from elsewhere in the house (AppleTVs lose it).
No internal services can be reached by name, either DNS or BonJour.
The App Store says 'can't connect.'
iTunes will say it can't connect to the ITMS.
This is true on Ethernet *or* on Airport (the Mini usually runs on ethernet alone with AirPort off; bringing up Airport once this has occurred doesn't seem to help anything).
Running the Airport Utility, it sees *no devices* (there are 4 on this network)
    BUT!
If I go into the Terminal, I can not only get clear network traffic anywhere I want at the TCP layer, DNS seems to work as well.  So the following is true also:
'ping cisco.com' (or any valid DNS name) works fine - resolves DNS, pings.
'traceroute cisco.com' works fine - resolves DNS, traceroutes out across the internet, no problems.
'ping <IP address of NAS>' - works fine.
    'dig <name>' - works fine.
pinging the gateway (the router airport) works fine.
    Also:
Other Macs in the house (on wired OR wireless, connected to any of the AirPorts including the same one as the Mini) work fine.
Other Macs can see the NAS connected to that same AirPort fine.
iOS devices in the house connected to any AirPort work fine.
netstat -r shows what look to be proper routes - i.e. the default gateway is the router address (10.0.1.1) and the route to 10.0.1.1 is shown to be the MAC address of the router's Ethernet interface (anyway, as I mentioned above, network stuff from the shell works fine<!?!??!
    Steps tried:
    Turning off ipv6 - nope.
    Applying all firmware/software updates (OS X 10.6.8) - nope.
Tried manually setting DNS to Google public DNS servers - nope.  Those work fine, and are still set when the network drops out, and then don't work, nor does setting new DNS servers in the Network prefpane.
    Logging out/back in - nope.
Restarting the computer:  YES.  This works, all three times this has happened (all this week).  Serious PITA.
I tried going through the system log, but I don't see anything notable that changes or is logged when the network connection drops.
Every time the connection has stopped working, the computer *has* slept at some point since it was last known working, but if I sleep the computer manually, everything seems fine.
.....waaaaaaaah!  Help, this one is making me crazy. :-)  Thanks.  I'm terminal-savvy, and fairly OS X savvy.

I still have this issue.  About every one hour - two days the DNS layer will stop working and only a restart will fix it.
Killing mDNSResponder only resolves the issue sometimes and even then for a few seconds.
I have now found and created the following bash script, to see if this will be a more reliable non-restart fix that killing mDNSResponder in the terminal:
    #!/bin/bash
#Script to unload and reload mDNS as it is a bit crappy
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
    echo "mDNS unloaded"
    sleep 5
    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
    echo "mDNS loaded"
    sleep 5
echo "Hopefully you can get on with browsing again"
I saved the above as mdns_reload.command, and then in Terminal ran "chmod u+x mdns_reload.command".  This makes the script executable.
The next time the problem occurs I am going to test how good this script is as a resolution.
The second time the problem occurs I am going to try the following, from a different thread from 2011:
I don't know if anyone will be helped by this, but the Macbook problems connecting to the internet are directly related to DNS issues. I discovered this after an upgrade to the OS X Lion preview.
The symptoms are as follows: a macbook (pro, mini, etc) can get an IP address from a DHCP server on any given network, but can not connect to the internet, even though other computers on the same network have no issues. If this sounds familiar, read on.
The problem is not related to 3rd party products, routers, Airport settings, locations or public vs private DNS servers, and you don't need to reset SMC or PRAM.
You will need to use terminal and you DO NOT want to use disk utility to repair permissions.
The most direct way to fix this is to copy the com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist and com.apple.mDNSResponderHelper.plist files from an internet connected Mac into your /System/Library/LaunchDaemons directory.
(You should know that it probably doesn't matter what version of OS X you have or the other Mac has, you just need the files.)
Next you will need to change ownership of the files just copied (ex: chown root:wheel /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist and chown root:wheel /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponderHelper.plist)
Then, you will need to set correct permissions (ex: chmod -R 755 /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist and chmod -R 755 /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist)
The last thing you'll want to do is to verify that the ownership of the files copied is set to system (and maybe wheel) using "Get Info." (Conversely, you can use ls -l /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist to verify owner and permissions.)
You should not have to restart to connect immediately to the internet.

  • Can I connect my Mac to two separate wireless networks at the same time?

Need some assistance with some advanced wireless networking please....
Upstairs I have a D-link wireless router connected to the internet and wired to a couple of PCs. Downstairs I have a minimac linked to my hifi via an airport express. I have bought a D-Link DWL-G122 usb wifi dongle.
So I want the mini mac to connect to the airport express on one wireless network (strong signal) and to be able to connect to the internet on another network (weak signal) via the usb wifi /router.
But the airport software and the d-link driver seem to conflict and both try to take control of the two wireless devices.
Is there any way round this to be able to run one mac with two wireless network devices at the same time?
    Thanks

While those with more experience may be able to correct me, I'm pretty sure that you can only connect to one wireless network at a time with your Mac Mini, unless D-Link provides their own proprietary software that bypasses the computer's Airport settings.
Using the AirPort hardware you can only connect to a single wireless network at any given time. However in this situation the 2 attempted connections are via USB and AirPort. Therefore this requires nothing special of the AirPort drivers or settings.
It does require that the Mac OS and applications have the capability to use either network connection (USB or AirPort) depending on what data they are trying to get. In general I understand how it is theoretically possible but I have no idea if you can configure OS X to do it.
...I believe one of the options when setting up the Airport Extreme Base Station is that you can extend a wireless network already in place.
True but the D-Link is not compatible with Apple's WDS therefore this is not possible in this situation.
If you have a newer Airport Extreme Base Station with a USB port on it...
FYI, every AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) has a USB port.
BTW, birky has indicated that he/she is using an AirPort Express (AX) not an AEBS.

  • Intel Mac Mini Duo on WiFi network

Just got my Intel Mac Mini Duo and had upgraded to 10.4.6, firmware, boot camp, Windows XP Pro all running alright.
I had an Airport Extreme and Airport Express based wireless network at home configured with closed network. My PB G4 and another Sony Viao sitting in the same room running nicely over the network to the Internet. Everytime I started the Mini it can locate the closed network and connected but no connection status, and no matter how long I had waited the same thing happened. The only work around is turn off the airport and turn it on again. But still though sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Any one got any clue what's happening or having similar experience?

  • Why can't I connect my mini to a wireless network?

    Please help!
I moved into an apartment and trying to join my roommate's wireless. I have entered his Network name and password and tried this every way I can think of but always get "Connection timeout" as a response. my roommate's macbook shows about 15 wireless networks in the area with his dropdown menu bar icon and my mini shows about 2-3 at any given time and as i'm looking at them they pop in and out of the menu. Which makes me wonder about my antenae and why I am not detecting the number of networks he is on his macbook sitting right next to me. Any ideas? I am at the end of my wits trying to figure this out.

    kruzline,
Run the [hardware test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509] that came with your mini.
If the Airport wireless card checks out, you might want to [check this out|http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22230&sid=1bde03893cefd9b3 6ecaa0fc648cd06d].
Wireless has been a fairly consistent sore spot for mac minis. Some people have improved reception by putting the mini on its side. Others have bought Apple-compatible USB wireless dongles and used them instead of the internal Airport card.
Since you won't be carrying the mini around the apartment, ethernet might make more sense.
