Mac mini replacement motherboards

I have a 2.53ghz intel core 2 duo, 4gb of DDR3, 320gb mac mini I purchased in 2009. It stopped working so I took it into apple and they told me the motherboard was out and It would cost $430 to fix. I was wondering if there is an less expensive alternative to having apple replace it? Ive heard that I can purchase a "third party" motherboard and replace it myself. I am looking for any suggestions anyone has.
Thanks

There are no 3rd party logic boards. You can purchase used logic boards, however. ifixit.com is one source, as is ebay mentioned above. You can google "mac mini logic  boards" and find a number of vendors with used boards. ifixit.com has some good directions on how to replace the board, too.

Trying to replace a damanged keyboard for my mac mini but the blue tooth on the new one doesn't connect.  I've tried restarting it and reconnecting and a few other combinations but it will not pick up.  Plus it's password protected.  How can I get around this issue?

Plug in a usb keyboard to enter password.  Once in SL open Set up Bluetooth Device. Hit power button on keyboard and enter code that appears. Keyboard should now be paired to Mini

  • Can Mac Mini replace my PB G4?

My HD has reported fatal errors (SMART status). I've backed up onto an external drive for safety.
Instead of replacing the HD in the G4, could I use a MAC MINI instead? Using the keyboard and the display of the laptop?
That way, I could make full use of the Intel technology right? Yes? No? Talking BS? Let me know kind people.
    Thanks.

No, you won't be able to use the keyboard and display of your PowerBook for the Mac mini. The PowerBook doesn't have any kind of "video in" to go from the Mac mini's video out. You'd need to buy a regular display, keyboard and mouse for the Mac mini.

  • Mac Mini replacement hard drive - will any 2.5" SATA drive fit?

I want to upgrade the hard drive in my Early 2009 Mac Mini. I see lots of good info online about how to disassemble and reassemble the Mini. But I can't find any info about hard drive compatibility.
Will any 2.5" laptop SATA drive fit the Mini? I want to make sure that all the connectors and mounting holes will line up correctly. I am thinking about Western Digital Scorpio Black.
Anyone have any experience with this?
    Thanks for the help!

  • Mac Mini Replacement Query

    Hi all,
I bought a Mac Mini dual core, i5, 4G DDR3 with a 500G hadr disk August 2 this year. I just learned that a new line of Mac Minis were showcased in the market. Is there any chance I could return my newly bought Mac and get the new upgrade? I was aspiring for the 1T 8G. Any answers will be very much appreciated.
    Many Thanks!
    /c

No you only have 14 days to return for a refund.
Also, in some ways the 2012 is better than the baseline 2014 Mini. You can easily upgrade the memory and upgrade, or even install a second drive, in the 2012 Mini with a little effort.

  • Where Can I Buy a 2011 Mac Mini Replacement Fan?

Broke the cable on my fan during a hard drive replacement. Anyone know where I can buy a replacement?

  • Non-booting Mac mini (stuck at gray screen with no Apple logo or others)

We've got a G4 Mac mini whose motherboard was recently replaced. I've put it back together carefully following the instructions on pbfixit.com, but I can't get it to boot.
When powered on, the chime sounds normal, and the screen comes on after a few seconds with a gray background--no Apple log, no spinner, no error, no flashing icons, nothing.
I've already zapped the PRAM 3 times using OptCmd+PR, no go.
I'm able to get into OpenFirmware using OptCmd+OF and have done reset-nvram and reset-all, restarting the machine, but no luck. The system date remains current also, indicating perhaps it's not resetting the PRAM either way somehow.
The disc drive won't accept a boot CD or DVD as if it's unpowered, but it's snugly connected.
I'm unsure what to test next. Suggestions? Thanks.

    Greetings,
I just had the exact same problem with a Mini. Would only boot to a gray screen no matter what I did. Booting into the OpenFirmware did help, booting into the Startup utility (by holding "T" down at startup showed no hard drive and no CD/DVD drive.
    Hold on to your hat . . . .
The issue was the battery. These guys have a Lithium battery that allows them to boot up, a battery that can be purchased anywhere that sells those kinds of thing. I bought 2 for $3.50, it was more time and trouble to get into the case and get at the logic board but once the battery was replaced everything works like a dream.
Here is an excellent step-by-step tutorial about getting into the case http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddMacMiniuk.htm. Just make sure that doing so doesn't void any warranties.
    Good Luck!

  • Mac Mini Upgrade Nightmare

So my Samsung 840 pro 128GB finally came in, and I decided to spent 30mins to upgrade. Well it not only took over an hour but also created a nightmare. Why...I noticed in putting the fan back in that one of the wire had broken...in the corner where the wires make the almost ninety-degree turn. Now, I bought the Mac Mini about the first week of December...so would it still covered under warranty?

    Drop Top (bottom) Mac Mini:
So, I decided to install Mavericks on the Samsung 840 Pro, install 16GB Crucial memory and erase the original hard drive and use it as Time Machine back up until my 10TB G-Raid Pro is ready. Of course, the Mac Mini is up side down with bottom cover off and a twin USB fan across the bottom...all is good.
The Mac Mini replacement fan ordered and should receive it by Tuesday. I had also called my local Apple Store which stated that because I did the upgrade, the warranty might not apply however, I would have to take the Mac Mini in for an evaluation and they would need to order a fan. I told them I'll just take the responsibility even though it was an accident.
I might just configure Server in the morning.

  • I have just replaced my mac mini because previous motherboard was damaged. I want to pair with my existing wireless keyboard and mouse but can only pair with thebold mac mini which will not start. Any ideas?

See title. How do I unpair a wireless keyboard and mouse when the previous paired mac mini is damaged and will not start?

You should be able to go to System Preferences -> Keyboard and System Preferences -> Mouse and discover the bluetooth devices.
Also, do you have a bluetooth icon on the top bar of your mac?  Should look sort of like this:
If you can figure out which device is which (by trial and error, if nothing else), you can connect to them on this menu.

  • Using Time Capsule and Mac Mini to replace a PC.

I have 4 macs of various vintage in the house and 1 PC. I use the rather robust PC as the server for my itunes library. I'm fully uploaded to iCloud. I'd like to replace this final PC with a Mac Mini but none have a harddrive large enough to accomodate my iTunes library. (about 785G of music and video) Can I use a Time Machine as the storage device for my iTunes library? Can I connect the Time Machine and Mac Mini via Thunderbolt for fast data access? Also, if I can use the Time Machine for storage of the iTunes library, should I consider the iCloud to be my "Back Up" or should I get an additional Time Machine for back up? Also, I use and AirPort Extreme as my wireless router with 2 AirPort Expresses to expand my wifi network. Can I simply add Time Machine to my existing network or will I need to replace the AirPort Extreme with the Time Capsule?

Don't use Time Capsule for media storage.. it is not suitable and although pressed into service it is a pain. (Time Machine is software backup on the computer and is completely unrelated to the TC).
The problem with using Time Capsule to Time Capsule, is simple.. it doesn't have any software to do it.. The TC is a backup device.. not a NAS. Do not try and use it as a NAS.
You can add a TC to the network without doing much.. just bridge the TC and it will work fine plugged into the AEBS.. but again it is expensive waste. You are buying a router with enclosed hard disk drive and turning off the router.. so all you have is a hard disk which is networked.
If you get a mini use firewire external drive.. you can get 2 or 3 TB fairly cheaply and plug it in. Then back up to a TC if you really want, but any NAS with Time Machine extensions will do the job. Or a hard drive in another Mac made available to the network.

  • When I replaced my PC desktop with a Mac Mini and hooked up my HP printer to it, I discovered my other computers on the Wi-Fi network could no longer access the printer.  The manual says Maverick OS will not allow PC's to access the printer. Any thoughts?

When I replaced my PC desktop with a Mac Mini and hooked up my HP printer to it, I discovered that my other computers on the Wi-Fi network could no longer access the printer.  The manual says Maverick OS will not allow PC's to share the printer. Does anyone else have this problem?  My printer does not have on-board Wi-Fi but, otherwise, works fine.  I shouldn't have to buy a new one.  Is there a OS patch out there that would open the printer port for my PC computers?

I'm assuming that on the Mac, the System Preferences -> Sharing -> Printer Sharing -> [X] HP printer -> Everyone can print is selected?  That is to say, the Mac will allow anyone to print using the printer, and that you did not try to restrict who can print.
How is your network configured?  Bonjour as a protocol will NOT cross a router boundary.  If you have 2 or more subnets active with the PCs on one subnet and the Mac on another, that would block the PCs from seeing the Mac.
You could have multiple subnets if you have more than one router, such as an ISP provided broadband modem/router and another WiFi Router.  If the PCs are talking to one router and the Mac is talking to another, that could be a 2 subnet situation.  The additional routers must be put into bridge mode, which is done differently depending on the router.  But the basics are to diable DHCP and NAT services on the secondary router(s) having just one active router on the network.
Also, using Bonjour Browser on my Mac, it is showing me that the printer is being advertised as using Internet Printing Protocol, so if that is something selectable on Windows, maybe you can bypass Bonjour on Windows.

  • HT1719 I have music on my Shuffle and want to transfer it onto iTunes but when I go to Sync it, it warns me that all the music on my Shuffle will be deleted and replaced with what's on my iTunes. I have a new mac-mini and my old computer was an HP.

Can anyone tell me how to tranfer the music that is on my Shuffle to iTunes? When I go to Sync it, it gives me a warning that all the music on my Shuffle will be deleted and replaced with what is on my iTunes. I recently changed computers from an HP to a Mac-Mini and did not transfer/sync the itunes prior to getting rid of my itunes. So the music I had on itunes does not appear in my library. Help please!
