Mac MIni running hot after memory update

I have a late 2010 Mac Mini. Using Temperature Monitor, it always showed CPU temperatures at anyhting between 45 and 65.
Last week, I upgrdaed the memory from 2gb to 5gb. Since then the temprature has been contantly between 69 and 72.
Are these events connected and, in any case as the temperature limit is 105, does it matter?
David

please explain this 105 temperate limit. where is this mentioned?
intel cpus can go really hot with no apparant damage
my core i7 right now is running 150 degrees, because it is doing a mixture of seti @ home and milky wayi @ home packets
my video card just idling not doing much is 104
just turning a computer on can cause it to go to 105 degrees farenheit
i used to have to have a problem with my mac mini actually over heating to weird blue screen and rebooting that was because my pram / nvram or whatever you call it smc needed to be reset and it wasn't turning the fan on
when apple says operating temperature of 95 degrees and 115 degrees storage temperature , they are talking about the temperate of the room. they arent talking about the actual cpu temperature
when intel cpus hit the actual temperature limit (which is around 160-180 or so ) it will shut down and drop its load and and shut down hard to save itself. before that temperate is reached, the intel cpus will commonly step down their speeds down to dissapate heat
105 is nothing to worry about
update
my studio xps core 2 duo laptop that i am typing on for which i am not really doing a whole lot on it  except like
browsing the web is:
gpu 126 degrees farenheit
temp sensor 113 degrees farenheit
cpu (both cores) 99 degrees farenheit
now if u meant 105 degrees celsuis then i think the warranty would be voided

  • Why is my mac mini running slow after downloading Yosemite?

My mac mini is running significantly slower after downloading Yosemite and I am wondering if it is to better to try to go back to an older operating system or if Apple is working on a fix for this.
Here is what I am Running it on:
Model Name: Mac mModel Identifier: Macmini3,1
Processor Name Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
                                       Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
                                        Number of Processors: 1
                                        Total Number of Cores: 2
                                           L2 Cache: 3 MB
                                            Memory: 2 GB
                                            Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
                                           Boot ROM Version: MM31.00AD.B00

                                               Hardware UUID: 2DF68C91-A8F8-536A-87EF-14DDEF6FAB32

I thought I had gotten rid of the HP shortcut manager and can no longer find it but when I re ran my Test it is still there. Were could it be hiding that I can not find it now?

  • Mac Mini (intel) freezes after Security Update

On May 16th I downloaded and installed ´Security Update 2006-003 (Intel)´ on my Mac Mini. Since then I have been unable to have any other session with it than in "safe boot" mode.
Then, on May 18th, during one of these "safe" sessions, I also downloaded and tried to install ´Mac Mini SMC Firmware Update´, hoping that this could be the resolve. The initial behaviour changed slightly, but that was all.
When I now look for upgrades, I get the message that the latter is available for download, so it has obviously not been activated.
I have been keeping the ´box´on for days in case there was some process going on in the background that would resolve it, but in vain.
As something appears to have entered the machine with these updates, are there any way to reverse them and throw them out?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thanks for your reply!
To adress your questions in sequence:
1 - After powering up, the grey Apple screen emerges, and shortly after the rotating wheel of bars starts going. Then the screen changes to blue, and the shield showing "Starting Mac OS X" has its blue ribbon rotating up towards 100%. Now, here things may change from time to time, sometimes it reaches 100%, sometimes not. But the next phase is the same; a shift to a dull blue-gray screen with nothing on it, which remains until I eventually give in and presses the power off button for some seconds. I even left it like this this for a day, to make sure nothing was going on behind, but in vain.
2 - I am not sure about your meaning "Since the computer operates normally in Safe mode....", I did not normally operate it in safe mode, it became a necessity after the download I mentioned. Tried to look in the suggested FAQ, but did not find anything I found relevant. (But then -being new to Macs - maybe I did just not understand it?)
3 - The Security update was the last of 7 updates that was downloaded from the Apple Support pages, the others being: QuickTime v7.1, Front Row Update v1.1.2, iDVD Update v.6.0.2, iWeb Update v1.1, iPhoto Update v6.0.3 and iMovie HD Update 6.0.2. As I said, I am new to the Apple structure, so I do not know if these softwares are regarded as third-party or not.
There is, however, as far as I can see, nothing that indicates that any type of panic with the core is declared during start-up, it just becomes incommunicado!
4 - Obviously, the most attractive option I can see is to follow your advices here. But the mentioning of specific versions of CD in conjunction with re-installatin alerts me somewhat. What I got with my Mac Mini are two CDs; ´Mac OS X Install Disc 1´ (Labelled Mac mini) and ´Mac OS X Install Disc 2´. Does this means that I am unable to do Archiving?
Finally, I have some other topics (Basically with QuickTime) with this Mac Mini as well, that was the reason I started looking for updates in the first place, that will become important again when I overcome this blow. But as I am looking around in the forums I become increasingly aware that there are lots of people experiencing similar problems to myself (Poor functioning of Airport, problems using flat-screens as monitor), and now this one. I mean to see a pattern, and that is that there are significant differences in functionallity between OS X for the "normal" processor and the one for Intel. How deep goes this difference? There is obviously softwares for OS X that cannot run on this machine, and how do I keep them out?
Hoping for some more helpful hints
    Best Regards,
    Ole

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mac Mini running slow after Mavericks

    Hi All
I have a Mac Mini which I upgraded to Mavericks and now it intermittently runs extremely slow - almost at a standstill. I have tried a number of things, such as a complete OSX re-install; I've used MacKeeper to tidy up my junk; I have installed Time Machine Scheduler to stop constant back-ups; I have tested the machine when the Iomega Time Machine drive is unconnected and my 2TB external archive drive is unattached too; I have removed Flashplayer programmes, Silver light etc etc. But nothing is helping (I have not tried uninstalling Microsoft Office, yet!).
I is a busy working machine and I am now having to resort to using my Mac Air because things are so bad.
Weirdly, my wife's identical Mac Mini (with Mavericks) has none of these problems.
Here is my report from EtreCheck.... PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP AS I GOING CRAZY!!!
    Thanks
    Keith

That's your first two mistakes. Get rid of MacKeeper. It is of no benefit, and is arguably detrimental.
Secondly, Time Machine backups only backup what has changed in the last hour. They should not be "constant", but even if they are, the speed at which the backup is made is irrelevant.
Get rid of the Kromtech thing, whatever that is, too.
    Two things to test:
    1. Does it work in Safeboot Mode? If so, then it's likely some third-party software that you normally have running.
    2. Does it work in a brand new user account? If so, then your problem is a corrupt preference or cache in your old user account, or some user-triggered process. Go back to the old account and start refining your hunt. Remove a bunch of preference files and test; empty user caches with a utility like Onyx; turn off Login Items, etc.

More memory. Your Mac can take 16 GB (2X8). If you can;'t swing for 16, I would replace one 1 GB with an 8 GB stick. Make sure you get memory that the manufacture says will work with your model Mac. It is easy to upgrade memory.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/mac_mini2011/
    That place also sells memory
I would also update the apps associated with:
    DigidesignLoader: Path: /Library/StartupItems/DigidesignLoader
        PACESupport: Path: /Library/StartupItems/PACESupport
Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite

  • Satellite A110 (PSAB0) running hot after BIOS update

I updated the BIOS on my Satellite A110 (PSAB0) to the latest version and now the laptop runs hot - the fan runs constantly and the battery drains from full to empty in minutes.
Is there a setting or another update to cure this problem or how can I restore the old BIOS?
I am sure I opted to save the old version during the update but I can't find it on my laptop.
    Thanks for any help

Have you tried resetting the BIOS to its default settings?
Also try updating the Toshiba Power Saver and Common Modules, and check that the power options are set to dynamic CPU speed to avoid the CPU from running full speed all the time.

  • Mac mini locks up after yosemite update

After the screensaver activates the computer locks up and I have to hold the power button in till it reboots
Any ideas, this computer was bulletproof until the upgrade

The screensaver module is the item you selected in the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I downloaded and installed the: Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.6 on my mac mini running 10.8.1, was I correct in doing this ?
I didn't see this update come up in "Software Update"
If I was not meant to install this update, would it cause ANY damage at all to my mac ( this is my second as I dropped the first )
If I were to re-install ML would this fix any errors that this may have caused ?
The bottom of the page I link to says:
Boot ROM or SMC Version Information: MM51.0077.10
But when I click on "About this Mac" it says:
    Boot ROM Version:          MM51.0077.B10
      SMC Version (system):          1.75f0
What does the additional "B" mean?
My mac mini is the Mid 2011 Model.
I am sorry if I am sounding super paranoid about this, but I don't want to have caused any permanent damage.

    Hello,
It's somewhere between almost impossible & impossible to install the wrong EFI Update with all the checks it does!

Not sure what the B means.
If I were to re-install ML would this fix any errors that this may have caused ?
No, Firmware is unaffected by any OS change or re-install.

You question is currently like My car won't start - any suggestions?
what version of iPhoto? What has changed since it worked correctly? What happens when you try to update (exact message) iPhoto? What happens when you try to open iPhoto (again exact message)?
For a used system the installed software belongs to he seller - yon need to purchase your own copies and install

  • New Mac Mini Running Fine-Mavericks 10.9.5

I am an Apple convert from Microsoft. Giving up Windows after years of the gut wrenching abuse over the years of XP only to have Microsoft kill it. That being said and out of the way.
I find my old school computer self coming from the 4 color Amiga Desktop Icons and Apple color palette in yon days of old, only to find countless reviews about Yosemite's "eye candy" problem. Who cares? So far, in the reviews I am reading a bunch of Blah, blah typing. Know one has given or provided conditions in which they installed Yosemite and type of Mac, including, but not limited to, the compatibilty of the Apps they have installed. So, I am here instead of blogging on Apple's Yosemite review page.
I have a Late 2012 Mac Mini i5, 4 GB memory, 500 GB HD with 27" Thunderbolt Display. A LaCie 1 TB ext HD and a WD My Passport 1 TB ext HD. I'm using Boot Camp to dual boot Windows 7 Pro. I am running MS Office 2011 for Mac in Mavericks. I use Firefox as my secondary browser. I am running an HP 6520 Photosmart wireless printer. I have a Cisco E2500 router. I want to know if upgrading to Yosemite will cause more problems for me than to bite the bullet and clean install. How about, if my Mac is working, why fix it with an upgrade that I will not use. I don't have an iPhone. Do I wait until Apple forces me to install? By the way, how will it affect my 0 partition if I choose to revert back to Mavericks. What about driver functionality in Yosemite? Someone has got to feel my struggle. Thanks.

I've only had this Mini since August. I have had to update Safari twice, apps once and OS X once. A bit excessive for being so new. ( Well, Microsoft was worse about updates ). You all are helpful in the support community. I'll quit reading reviews now and ask all of you the meat and potato questions.
You can expect an OS update from Apple every couple of months unless there's a truly nasty bug that Apple is trying to stamp out. Security updates come up as needed. The one nice thing about Apple updates is that I don't worry about them bricking my computer. Not saying it doesn't happen and I always plan for the worst but backing up one last time before applying the update, but I can't think of a Mac OS update that has been a disaster for my contingent of computers. Can't say the same for Windows updates.
There's a wealth of knowledge here at the ASC - the depth and breadth continues to amaze me and I've been hanging out here for a very long time. You'll find the same level of knowledge at many Linux sites but I've found those to be less forgiving of newbies than the ASC is.

  • How do I upgrade my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion? Thanks

I have a Mac Mini running Snow leapard. I believe i can update it to Mountain Lion but have read I have to first update it to Lion. This is where Im struggling. How do I get a copy of Lion as I cant download it as there is not an App Store on Snow Leapard.
    Any help would be great!

Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
      1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
      2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
      3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
      4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
      5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
      6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
      7. Xserve (Early 2009)
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
Model Eligibility for Snow Leopard and Lion.
