Mac Mini Server Airport Express with Server Firewall Settings

I posted this in the Server forum, but I've had no responses so far - so I'll try it here instead! Any help is appreciated...
I've got a new Mac Mini Server (mid 2010) with Snow Leopard Server v10.6 that I intend to use as a file server in the long term, and as my main computer replacing my old PC in the short term.
One of it's uses will be my iTunes server for my Airtunes network with two airport expresses.
When I disable the server firewall iTunes can connect to the airports with the check box in the 'multiple speakers' menu in iTunes. If I enable the firewall with the default settings of 'allow these ports' I cannot. I have used the Apple document on well known TCP and UDP ports to open for Apple software packages with particular attention to streaming audio / iTunes etc. Still doesn't allow the speakers to be selected in the 'multiple speakers' check box.
I also tried the 'allow all traffic' option for the firewall, again no connection to the remote speakers happened. If I turn off the firewall it all works fine. It seems that there are some ports that need to be open in order to establish the connection - I just don't know what they are.
Does anyone know of the appropriate ports to open? I tried searching the forums and I did try some of the suggestions for port 5000, 6000, 6001 etc but it doesn't make any difference!
Thanks in advance...

I found this works too. Though I came about this a slightly different way.
I moved over to Airfoil as Airtunes didn't work without the firewall and Airfoil did. I then had problems with Airfoil not reconnecting to the remote speakers when you cycled the power on them, I don't want all of my remote speakers powered all of the time. They were set to automatically connect, yet they refused connection a couple of times before connecting, which meant logging into the mini and reconnecting manually, which wasn't what I wanted to do. During an email conversation with Rogue Amoeba I sent them a debug logfile - they pin-pointed it as a connection denial with IPv6 addressing.
Once I had that info, I disabled IPv6 for my network adaptors and Airfoil worked and reconnected fine even when airport expresses are power cycled. I then tried Airtunes again and now the speakers can be connected. It's down to the first choice for connections is IPv6, if this is not available it's IPv4.
It's definitely a bug with the IP6FW control and link-local traffic.
Hope this helps.

  • Request for advice - problem networking mac mini without airport express

Hi - grateful for any help on this one.
I've just upgraded from an original (May '05) mac mini to a new 20" G5 (intel dual core) which I've set up on a wireless (airport express) network. The new machine and network are working fine but I've been trying to set up the old mac mini in a different room as a second machine for work and have been having problems.
The mac mini is the basic version without airport/bluetooth. After some mix up at the Apple Store over retro fitting an airport express the genius I spoke to recommended getting a D-link USB wireless adapter. I bought a D-link DWL-122 installed it (and after a crash course in the difference between WPA and WEP) got it running okay on the network. Unfortunately the D-link driver software appeared to wipe out the Spotlight index and stopped my HP printer being recognised. A couple of bulletin boards I googled suggested this was a common problem but I haven't been able to find any with a solution. In the end I had to wipe the hard drive and re-install from scratch to get the printer and spotlight working again.
So I have two questions: is there a way to make the D-link work (the d-link website has no faqs, update drivers or other info about Mac bugs) or, if not, then what should I buy instead to access my wireless network reliably? Would I be better getting something that plugged straight into the mac mini's ethernet port? If so, what? And grateful for any recommendations about which products and their software are most reliable.
    Any advice gratefully received.
    Thank you!
    Chris

    Hi,
You should of been able to use the Airport Express to solve the issue you are having. The Airport Express (small white brick shaped) is designed to work as a stand alone router or as a wireless extension to an existing wireless network.
So the setup would be from the mini as follows:
Mac Mini ---> Airport Express (AirPort Express Extends wireless connectivity) ---> Wireless Router (Airport Extreme, etc) ----> Cable/DSL Modem.
    Hope that helps.

I'm adding a Mac Mini OS X Mountain Lion Server to my home network. What options do I have to inetgrate iTunes into the server? Currently my master iTunes library is housed on a RAID on a Mac Pro, home sharing is on, and it interfaces over the network just fine into Apple TV (3rd gen). For instance, with Server can all devices on the network have access to that library?  Could the library stream to the Apple TV in the living room, an iMac in the office, an iPhone in another room all simultaenously? • Airport express with Snow and wired Mac Mini?

    Hi,
I am trying to help my parents set up airport express.
They have a Mac Mini with no wireless card connected by ethernet to a Snow base station. That is fine, and computer sees the base station in Airport Admin. However, when I try to go to Airport Setup Assistant to set up the Airport Express, I get a message saying that the computer doesn't have a wireless card (which I know) and doesn't allow me to continue.
Is there a known thing where you can't use Airport Express with a Snow base station without a wireless card? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Nevermind, I guess I answered my own question.

  • Using a Mac Mini as a File/Media server with different accounts

I recently bought a new iMac and decided to use my G4 Mac Mini as a media/file server and backup server.
One of the decisions I can't figure out is how to organize all of my files and user accounts. I especially would like to be able to access them from either my iMac or my Powerbook. Also, I'd like to be able to use the iMac as the main iPhoto and iTunes machine.
    So here's my ideal situation:
On the Mini create a user account for each media/user type: Music, Movies, Photos, Backup and then on the other Macs automount each user.
But I can't because once you connect to a mount via Finder you always connect via the same user. (is there a way around that?)
So I guess I can do it all under one user account, but then all of my configurations require subfolders which I was trying to avoid. It also means that if I give my kids access to one set of media, they get access to all.
Is there any way to create a more segmented Media Server? Is there any reason to or am I just making this too complicated?
    Thanks

    iMac; Mac Mini;Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

One more important detail. I have external HDs connected to the mini as well. While testing the single user method, I realized I couldn't mount those external HDs. Could be because I set the media user to a Standard User. But I still find that odd.
One way I did find to solve my ideal situation is to use Windows File Sharing instead of Personal File Sharing. By editing the smb.conf file I can share specific directories under specific users.
But surely the best way to network on a Mac is not using Samba is it?

    By Erik Eckel
    October 25, 2011, 6:00 AM PDT
Takeaway: Erik Eckel addresses a common problem — trying to get Lion Mail connected to Exchange servers. Here are some tips for how to do it.
Many technology professionals become frustrated when connecting Macs to Exchange servers. The frustration typically results from a misunderstanding of Microsoft Exchange technologies. Here’s what Lion users and administrators should know.
Exchange Web Services is the key
When connecting a Mac OS X Lion system, the email server should be running Exchange 2007 or 2010. Microsoft Exchange 2003 does not leverage the newer Exchange Web Services (EWS) introduced with the 2007 platform. iPhones and iPads leverage ActiveSync technology, which is one of the reasons those mobile devices typically work with Exchange 2003 servers.
While there are workarounds for connecting Lion systems to Exchange 2003 servers, including leveraging POP3, IMAP or browser-based OWA technologies, those solutions are less secure and support fewer capabilities. Anyone considering such options should remember that Microsoftsuspended mainstream support for Microsoft Exchange 2003 in April 2009. Organizations still dependent upon Exchange 2003 infrastructure should already be planning if not implementing their Exchange 2010 migrations.
    Connecting Lion Mail
Assuming an SSL certificate is installed, DNS A and MX records are properly configured, and the organization’s firewall passes the appropriate traffic, you can follow these steps to connect Mac OS X Lion’s Mail application to an Exchange 2007/2010 server:
    Open Mail.
Click File and select Add Account.
Specify the user’s name in the Full Name field. Enter the email address and type the password associated with the user’s Windows/Exchange user account, then click the Continue button. Mail will search for the associated email server; users may have to click Connect if Mail reports it cannot verify the identity of the email server.
When the Incoming Mail Server screen appears, select Exchange from the Account Type drop down menu.
Within the Incoming Mail Server field, specify the email server, providing again the user name and password.
Check the Contacts and Calendars boxes if you wish also to synchronize those items, then click Continue.
If SSL is to be used, check the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) box on the Incoming Mail Security screen and then click Continue.
An Account Summary will appear. Review the information entered to ensure accuracy, then click Create.
    Connecting Outlook 2011
Microsoft Outlook 2011 users can configure the application to connect to properly configured Exchange servers by following these steps:
    Open Outlook 2011.
Click Tools and select Accounts. If an account already exists, click the + icon and select Exchange. Otherwise, click Exchange Account from the Add an Account screen.
Enter the email address within the E-mail address field, then specify the authentication method. The most common method is likely the default user name and password configuration. Once you supply the requisite information, click the Add Account button (note Outlook selects the Configure automatically box by default).
If Outlook is unable to automatically configure the account, you will need to specify the server address, then click Add Account.
The Accounts screen will then appear. If additional settings must be configured, click the Advanced button. From the Server tab, you can override and update ports and change the server address, among other options. The Delegates and Security tabs, meanwhile, enable configuring delegate users, digital signing, and encryption certificates.

I want to install XP Pro SP2 on a Mac Mini from a 2003 RIS server. Is this possiIble? How is it done?
The mac has 10.5 which has bootcamp to enable Windows install. I have created a partition but the bootcamp utility asks for a CD. I want to install a RIS build. The Mac has a option for network boot but this seems to only work with Mac Server. I assume the network adapter is not PXE compatible and so a boot disk of some kind will be needed to kick this off?.

  • Airport Express with Older Mac G5

    Hi -
    This is my configuration:
    Brand New Mac Mini 2012
    AirPort Extreme (6 months)
Brand New Comcast/Xfinity gateway (not sure what brand they private labeled)
The good news - everything works great. (I have a double NAT error message but Comcast does not allow you to put theirs in bridge mode and I want a guest network so I just ignored the error).
I have a new roommate moving in with two comptuers, an older computer Power Mac G5 Dual Core and a 2011 Mac Mini. On the G5, there does not appear to have any way to connect to the wireless signal. I did some research online and I know that there is an option to install a card for it. I also looked at USB receivers.
My question is this: I just bought an AirPort Express because I wanted to extend my wireless network to them when they move in (it's a big, older building so I wanted to make sure that they had a good signal). Can I configure the AirPort Express and then move it to the G5 and connect it with an ethernet cable, giving that machine access to the network? And the AirPort Express will still just send a good wireless signal out for his other Mac Mini?
    Will that work?
    Thanks for any help.
    Cindy

Can I configure the AirPort Express and then move it to the G5 and connect it with an ethernet cable, giving that machine access to the network?
Yes. The Ethernet port is enabled when the AirPort Express is configured to "exend" a wireless network.
And the AirPort Express will still just send a good wireless signal out for his other Mac Mini?
    Yes.
Both answers above assume that the AirPort Express will be located where it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.

    Hello!
I´m sorry it took so long to reply, but I´m new to these blogs; and I´ve been travelling a lot... Anyway, I was able to configure Airport Express, but I was told I could use it to expand my wireless network inside my house; which I found it´s not possible.
So, I´m returning my Airport Express to the store tomorrow and try to figure out a way to extend my wireless in any other way.
Any sugestion? Big houses are a problem...
Best regards, and once again thank you!

  • Replacing an Airport Express with a Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet.

Hello, I hope somebody can help.
I am trying to replace an Airport Express with a 2TB Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet, via an ADSL modem.
I have tried everything I can think of, powering down all devices, re-setting all devices, but nothing seems to solve the problem.
When I first tried to set up the Time Capsule, there was an option to replace the Airport Express using the same settings.
But there were repeated error messages of 'No DNS Servers' and 'PPPoE server couldn't be found'.
I also had messages that the password for PPPoE wasn't correct, but when I plug the Airport Express back in again, everything works fine.
    What could the problem be?

99% of issues with authentication are wrong password or wrong username.. eg it can be strange like the user name is missing the domain.. whereas the Airport Express works fine without it.
Ring your ISP and make doubly sure you have exactly the correct username and password.
If it still doesn't work, put the adsl modem back into router mode and try it again directly on the modem.. if it works ok on the modem but fails on the TC that is possible and can be caused by pppoe client using incorrect authentication type, CHAP or PAP which the TC does not allow you to select AFAIK.. some ISP do not give enough time to get the router to switch on auto to the correct authentication method.
In the end run the modem as router and bridge the TC. It will work just as well for most installations in bridge as the modem in bridge.

  • AirPort Express with MacMini with no airport...

Ok right, i am looking to buy the AirPort Express with Air Tunes for use with my Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Unfortunatly, i bought my Mac Mini with no AirPort card installed. It is connected via Ethernet cable to my Netgear DG834G wireless router & modem. The Router wirelessly connects to my iBook as well and i can share music on my Mac Mini, iBook and other computers connected wirelessly to my router.
I want to know if i would be able to use the AirPort Express station with Air Tunes with my mac mini. If any one know or any one from apple could help i would be extremly thankful.
    Thanks, Jeff
MacMini 1.42GHz, iBook G4 1.33GHz (12")   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   for use with Bang & Olufsen sound system

YES YOU CAN! you DO NOT need to get a wireless card for your mini.
why people here feel the need to answer questions that they don't know the answer to is beyond me but YOU CAN CONNECT AND CONTROL the AE via a non wireless computer as long as that computer is connected to a network/router that is wireless..... what you want to do is exactly how i have mine set up, except i don't have a laptop.
first you need to plug the AE directly into the router via an ethernet cable. then on your mini open up AirPort Admin Utility. the AE should be given an IP by your router and shown in the list in the utility. then you need to click on the AE in the list and hit configure. you will need to enter in the 128bit security code that you have set up in your wireless router, enter the name of the network manually in the config and under 'wireless mode' choose "join an existing network". now the AE will work as a wireless extender and not a router (which is what you want since it will be connected to a network that already has a wireless router)
once you have it set up you can then remove the ethernet cable that is plugged into the AE and the light should remain green and you are good to go. you will be able to stream music from ANY computer on your network (your mini, laptop, etc) via itunes.
if you have any problems drop me a message.

  • AirPort Express (with N) restarts on high load

Hello! My AirPort Express (with N) restarts on high load. For instance, when I try to use P2P-online TV streaming, AirPort Express restarts every one minute. When I try to copy large file from one MacBook to Mac mini via Wi-Fi, AirPort Express restarts again. AirPort uses PPPoE, wireless freq is 5GHz (on 2,4GHz problem stays at place). Everything else works fine. What can I do? Thanks in advance.

I have tried everything. So now I think this is hardware issue.

  • Can no longer connect to Airport Express with upgrade to iTunes 10.1

Since I upgraded to iTunes 10.1 I can no longer connect to my Airport Express (unknown error-15000). Another computer on my betwork running an older version of iTunes still works on the Airport Express.
Any ideas? I have tried to uninstall and reinstall airport express with no success.

Rather than disabling the firewall, try making sure you've got exceptions in it for BonJour. Although the following document is about a different error message, the instructions in there are worth trying. (At step 7, make sure there's an exception for BonJour as well.)

  • Airport Express with printer & hard drive with Time Machine

I have a MacBook that I'd like to backup its data. Concerned about the following (in level of concern from highest to lowest): theft, crash, fire.
I currently have an Airport Express with a Brother printer attached to it that my PC and MacBook print to.
I am really in a dilemma as to what to do. I was looking into Carbonite to get an offsite backup location of my data. (I figured offsite would cover all concerns of losing data due to theft, fire, or just a crash) However, Carbonite does not hold onto data you delete (ie, my photos and videos will fill up my hard drive eventually and I'd like to just archive them in one central spot when I am done accessing them on a regular basis-- ie delete them off my MacBook hard drive). That is like $55/year to do Carbonite... but, the only thing that will help me with over a hard drive in my house is a fire (and theft if a burglar were to find where my backup drive was in the house).-- Of course, I'd probably want a different location for my hard drive for that reason -- so, I'd have to buy another airport or just a time machine that has the wifi built in.
I've read lots of issues with the Western Digital trying to download programs onto your computer... I have one for my PC that I backed up photos manually and it did try to install programs when I attached it to my PC... not so much my Mac when I took some photos off it. I looked into getting another portable hard drive at Costco for my Mac, but realized that it would require reformatting to use on my Mac (as it was built for a PC).... something I wasn't sure if I was computer-savvy enough to do or if I did do it, would I end up with issues later on?
Anyhow... in the end, what do you all do to backup your data, especially photos and videos? Do you have smaller hard drives that you back up to and then when full move them to an offsite location? Can you have more than one "hard drive" backing up..... I was thinking it would be nice to have one larger hard drive that would potentially hold all my photos and videos so I can access anytime, but then have smaller drives of the same data that I can take to a safe deposit box and use as my super secure backup (no fire, no theft, no crash).
btw, When doing time machine, does it keep all the metadata with each photo?
Burning CD's is time consuming.... and, I have heard there are different qualities of disks out there... archival v. not... how long do the archival last v. the non-archival... or is that more of an issue for future generations not being able to access our photos?

You need to remember that the Time Capsule is both a wireless router and a hard drive all in one enclosure. If you don't need a wireless router, around $150 of the $300 for a Time Capsule is going to be in the router portion of the device.
The nice thing about the Time Capsule is that it is a network drive. All Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard will be able to back up automatically to a single device. The first generation of Time Capsules about two years ago had some power supply problems that affected some users. Apple announced a program for these users to replace their Time Capsules.
So, it depends on your requirements. If you are looking for a new, dual band wireless router and want to backup your Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard automatically using ethernet or wireless, the Time Capsule is a logical choice.
If you don't need a new router, then you'll need to look at a separate hard drive that will be attached directly to the computer using the USB or FireWire port. If you have two Macs, you'll have to get two hard drives if you want to do Time Machine backups correctly.
Most hard drives can be reformatted to work with Mac if you don't mind a few extra steps and Disk Utility (Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) does not look too complicated for you.
