Mac Mini Server and Adobe Creative Suite

I am looking for buying a new server and wonder if the Mac Mini with OSX Server is powerful enough.
4 Intel based macs in the office, all working with the Adobe CS4 package creating a weekly newspaper.
The client macs are mainly working with InDesign and Photoshop files. There is a heavy use of Bridge for seachings and Smart Folders. From InDesign we create PDFs based on InDesign Book (recompiling info from various InDesign docs into one PDF).
Will the Mac Mini with OSX Server be powerful enough?
We are currently working with a QNAP NAS Server with 2 500 gb discs mirroring, which aparently doesnt fulfill the needs.
Anyone can recommend the Mac Mini OSX Server?

Which QNAP are u using?
Should be able to support 10 mac in an office like yours!
A minimum TS 239 pro surely does the job.
Why use mirroring in a QNAP NAS!? IT got great backup feature
put the 2 drive in raid 0
If not available onsite - Buy an external 2 TB used to backup the qnap daily or at least 3 times a week.
In my office we work directly with the indesign files on the nas without any issue.
If you will NOT be using all the features of mac os x server, its NOT worth the investment.
When you say powerful enough what do you mean?:
- Holding your files? any storage will do.
- Functions and services like ICHAT, ICAL, ACL, WEB for a mac office, YES OS X Server is the thing you need.
Also consider that as of now QNAP NAS does not offer any mean of being bind to LDAP. Even AD binding seems to be an issue, have a look on their discussion forum.
Setting MAC OS X SERVER as PDC and trying to bind the QNAP to it is a kind of an issue requiring adequate human resource for config.
Investing in the os x server now you will leave the QNAP on its own for file sharing, unless going through Global SAN, which, combine with Mac OS X server and QNAP/iscsi is a wonderful solution.
Wonderful solution only if you Mac OS X Server machine have TWO Gigabit NIC and you switch support VLANS. So here surely not the mini, though still depend on the size of the files you work with.
Then again you will need to rethink your Backup solution, may be going with combination of : CarbonCopyClonner, Automator and Ical.
The Mini Server with a DAS will suit your need. Already in possession of a QNAP NAS I dont see a Mini Server and external FIREWIRE RAID box be a good investment unless you are of those kind of rich business who dont know that in madagascar woman are giving birth in the streets without any doctor, in jakarta children below 5 yr old are being left on their own to survive the streets…

I have discs for Creative Suite but the LR was downloaded originally so I don't have the disc. In the past, Adobe support has been very helpful in getting these installed, but now it looks like Tech phone support is only for CC users. Hope somebody can help me here. Thank you!

  • Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite: New Choices for Customers

Adobe has announced the new Cloud-based model for software distribution, along with new terms for boxed product upgrade eligibility. Beginning with the CS6 releases, when they happen, upgrade pricing on boxed products will only be availble one generation back. There is a limited window to upgrade now to the current versions at a discount.
    See http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/adobe-creative-cloud-and-adobe-creative-suite -new-choices-for-customers.html

    Eugene:
Based on the current information we have (from the blog post), which may not be correct and which you should not rely upon:
There is some confusion about the word "discount." As used in the blog post, in general there are no "discounts" for upgrades, there is the upgrade price and there is full price. But, also in the blog post, there is a special "discount upgrade" if you choose to upgrade to CS5.5 today (prior to Dec. 31, 2011), which is 20% off the regular upgrade. However, Peter used the word "discount" to distinguish between upgrade pricing and full price. It's probably a good idea to avoid using that word there because of the potential for confusion.
I have CS5 InDesign in work. So I will be able to upgrade that to CS6 when it comes out at the discount price?
You will be able to upgrade to CS6 at upgrade pricing. Not the 20% discount, but it is "discounted" from the full price of CS6.
I'm still using CS2 Illustrator and Photoshop, for the little work I do in those programs, they're fine. But if I want to upgrade them to CS6 I have to pay the full amount of an upgrade, with no discount... or will I have to pay for CS6 in full for both of these programs?
You will have to pay the full price (not the "full amount of an upgrade," whatever that means).
If you elect to upgrade to CS5.5 prior to Dec. 31 of this year, however, then then you can pay the discounted upgrade price to upgrade to CS5.5 (well, CS5 since Photoshop CS5.5 doesn't exist), and then you can pay the CS6 upgrade price in March/April. So you can pay for no upgrades (full price) or two upgrades (one of which is 20% off).
At the moment I can upgrade CS2, photoshop and Illustrator for €240 each, to CS5. So wouldn't I just be able to do that now and then buy the CS6 upgrade at a much later date perhaps just before CS7 comes out?
    Yes, you can do that.
If CS6 has the tools to basically go "File>Export>Epub" and I get a fully working epub file without having to trash about in code afterwards or make complex tagging in InDesign, then I'll be buying it.
It looks like EPUB is evolving pretty fast, so even if ID CS6 fully supports what you want out of EPUB on Day 1, I bet you'll need to be prepared to postprocess it on Day 2. Or at least long before Day 200.

I set up Raid on my Mac Mini Server and lost my Server software. It is not listed in my "purchased" apps. How can I get it w/o having to purchase it? Will my serial # be enough to show it is a mini server and under warrantee be enough to get it back?

If it's not listed in Purchases, check that it's hidden, and if so, unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928 After that, go to Purchases and download OS X Server.

  • Download iOS 8 once to Mac Mini Server and upgrade all iOS devices in the network

Is it possible to download iOS8 only once to the Mac Mini Server and use it to upgrade all eligible iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) in the same LAN?
I tried the following methods and they are just not working:
    1. Connect an iPads Mini with Retina Display to the iTunes on Mac.  I chose Download Only. Once downloaded the iPad Software Upgrade, I upgraded the connected iPad to iOS8.  Then I connect another iPad (used to be on another Mac) to the same iTunes.  I had to download iOS 8 again.  It's not using the same downloaded iOS 8 file. (I did the same thing for an iPhone.  Same result.)
    2. I turned on the Caching Service (not Software Upgrade Service, i.e. for Mac Software) on the Mac Mini Server from the Server app.  I then repeat step 1 above and got the same result.  It seems that the Caching Service does not cache the iOS 8  Software Upgrade like what it does for other apps.  (I think I may need to use some Apple Scripts but I have no such experience.)

Yes, it should work that way.  However, I was told by an Apple Support that there was a problem and thus Server 3.2.1 was unable to do so.
I paid for Server 4 and it better provides the expected Caching Services for both iOS Software and Mac Software through the iOS and Mac App Stores.

  • HT204350 I,m going to change my Mac mini server and time capsule at the same time what's the best way to transfer from both of my old machines

I've just purchased a new Mac mini server and also a new time capsule is there any easy way to ghost or transfer the new machines at the same time or is it best to do one at a time?

I have no direct experience transferring a TC and computer at the same time, but prudence tells me to do one, test to be sure it is correct only then do the other. It will take twice as long from process start to finish, but avoids any nasty surprises at process end. In close to 40 years experience, I have never seen a "crash conversion" (everything at the same time) that did not have at least one major disaster. I am sure it can happen but the odds are heavily against it. Patience is a virtue!

  • Windows 7 on mac mini server and raid 1

I just purchased a 2011 mac mini server with the hopes of installing windows 7 alongside lion.  Then my goal was to have the two drives mirrored.  I successfully mirrored the two drives using disk utility and then proceeded to install lion.  This all went fine.  Imagine my shock when I loaded up bootcamp to see an error message describing it's inability to install windows on a raided system.  The thought hadn't even occured to me that this would be an issue.
I have searched through various forums and other places on the internet and haven't found a solution.  I am curious if I can get anyone with any experience in this area.  Is it possible to have mac and windows installed on a drive... and have that drive mirrored to the second drive... regardless of what os i'm booted into?
    Thanks for your help guys

The GUI version of Disk Utility is very limited in what sort of RAID configurations you can create. It will only allow you to have a single partition on the disk and to make a RAID using that.
Boot Camp requires creating additional partitions on the disk and hence it complaining.
There is a commandline version of Disk Utility called diskutility (duh!). It has far more options available. Details for this command can be obtained by typing man diskutility in Terminal.app.
It appears that in theory you might be able to do the following.
Start off with both disks not setup for RAID
Use Boot Camp to create the Windows partition. Repeat this on each disk.
Then in Terminal.app manually convert the boot Mac partition to a RAID using diskutil appleraid enable
Then add the matching partition on the second drive to make it a working mirror using diskutil appleraid add
Then in Terminal.app manually create a RAID for the Windows partition using both drives and use FAT32 as the format using diskutil appleraid create
Then boot and run the Windows installer and tell it to erase the Windows partition as NTFS
I cannot gurantee the above will work and you should obviously have backups if needed. Another option would be to have the Mac partition covered by RAID but not the Windows partition, this would result in three volumes one Mac RAIDed volume, and two other non RAIDed volumes even though you have two physical disks.

  • Small fast network with Mac mini server and Promise Pegasus?

I have 7 Mac Pros and iMacs that need to be connected to the same storage. I'm doing non MPI-based numerical modeling so the transfer rates have to be fast but not infiniband fast. I'm considering a setup with a Promise Pegasus thunderbolt RAID connected to a Mac Mini running Lion server for Access controll/Roaming homer directories. The Mac Pros and iMacs would the be connected via 1Gb ethernet.
My question is where the bottlenecks in this setup would be. The server software/hardware? The network? What else am I forgetting

I assume you're looking at Mac mini because you've already run the numbers on Mac Pro and ruled it out. I wonder how many buyers are opting for Mac mini solely for those Promise Thunderbolt arrays.
I also assume that each of your users is currently using a single gigabit Ethernet port to connect to the LAN.
If these assumptions are accurate, then I think that a Mac mini will work as long as you and your users have appropriate expectations. The win from putting this server in place won't be networked storage that outperforms an internal SATA drive, although in bursts it probably can. The solution you've described is smart because it's centralized, securable and adds a layer of data protection (RAID).
You asked about bottlenecks. I can think of three, two of which you can work around now or in the near future. The first is Mac mini's slow internal hard drive(s). You'll have a solution in hand: Boot Mac mini from the array. Some consider that to be a controversial choice, but you shouldn't spend extra for the Mac mini server with dual 7200 RPM drives. The less costly Core i7 configure-to-order upgrade will give you a bigger boost.
Booting from the array also protects you from the most likely "repair" scenario for Mac mini: Swapping out your entire machine.
The second issue is Mac mini's lack of an expansion bus. If you get more users or start using apps that demand more from the LAN, you might want to fire up additional gigabit Ethernet ports. Mac mini has just one. At present, the only way to add a gigabit port is with a Thunderbolt PCIe bus expander. Early next year, there should be more options that connect directly or via an intermediate bus like ExpressCard/34 or USB 3.0.
The one limitation you're powerless to work around is RAM. Mac mini tops out at 8 GB. That meets requirements, but it will be tight if you try to use Mac mini as a client and a server. I deploy them headless so no one's tempted to use the console.
You can improve your odds that gigabit will cut it by using heavy, short Cat6 cables and a switch dedicated to the Mac LAN. Use Mac mini's built-in Wi-Fi to keep Remote Desktop and other low-priority traffic off the wire.
Whatever solution you choose, I wish you the best of luck.

  • Mac mini server and media center

I recently purchased a Mac Mini Server for a few reasons.  One being to put all my music, video and photos on it and play it on my TV via the HDMI cable.  I also want to share that music, video and photos with my wife and my daughters over the network.
So mainly one video, music and image library shared with a MBP an 3 MB's on my network.
Also most if my video is from our iPhones.
I'd also like to put all my home movie DVDs onto the server as well.
Ideally all the data on the server can be played on the TV and all 4 Macs at the same time and it will be organized and easy to access.
Any ideas of what I should do?   I know iPhoto won't let more then 1 user at a time have access so that's out.
If you have any ideas that would be great.
    Thanks,
    Darren

iPhoto should really just be for still images. I don't think the automatic media scanner expects to see videos there. (This would be true of most 3rd party media center applications).
For further assistance, you might wish to consult on the Plex Forums on their website. I'm sure your feedback there would be appreciated.

  • Mac Mini Server and Windows SBS

I am running an aging Dell server with SBS 2003 and wondered whether it would be possible to use one or perhaps two Mac Mini Servers for my needs.  I used to host my own Exchange on this server but I was running out of HD space and it was not easily upgradable so I opted to use Hosted Exchange and use the old server for two things: as a File Server and to run a databse that was written for us in MS SQL Server.  I access the SQL database via RDP from my Dell laptop (docked in the office and connected to two monitors with extended desktop).  I have long been a Mac user at home and have someone else working on my team now who uses a Macbook Pro.  He is currently not using the server at all, but it would make sense for him to be able to access some aspects of the File Server.  My question is whether I can replace this Dell Server with a Mac Mini Server but booting in Windows SBS 2008 or whatever the newer version is, assuming it can still run the old SQL Server database.  Would it be possible to use the same Mini Server as a File Server or better to use a separate one for that or perhaps some other solution for a File Server.  I would like things to be RAID so that I have backups which are required for compliance reasons.  I currently run a nightly backup of the data on teh File Server and the SQL database onto an external drive and also the same back up is done using iBackup as an offsite back up.  I need the developers of the SQL Server database to be able to remote in from their Windows machines in India for periodic updates and system maintenance.  I also would need to be able to access the same database from my laptop in the office, and I believe there are limits on the number of connections one can have with SBS.  I do have VPN access set up via my Sonicwall TZ210 router/firewall that enables me to access the Server if I am traveling with my laptop or am at home on my iMac (although that client has never worked properly) but currently our internet connection is too slow to make the VPN usable when I'm away from the office.
Thanks to anyone who can answer all or part of these questions.  Perhaps I should have one Mini Server for the SQL database and one as a File Server (or could that just be done with a network drive?  I'm not sure I really know the difference - I'm a solo act here, not a systems guy, so am feeling my way somewhat).

  • Mac Mini Server and RAID

    Hello,
I have now the new mac Mini Server with LION.
All is already intalled but I would like to have a raid solution.
    I looked here > https://discussions.apple.com/message/10819777#10819777
But it's Old and close, and there is no DVD in the Box.
I Know, I can download Lion & every softwares but I am not sure about the best way to do that.
First, I use a Big USB Key to use with Time Machine. Perhaps it will be better and fast to install than Apps with my internet connection. 2 - I have to use the disk application to format the 2 disks... Do I need to be in target mode with another mac ?
I read there is a problem after with time machine.. true ?
I am sure lot's of people want to use mac mini server with Raid disk.
    Thank you for your help.

  • HT4929 I have a mac mini server and iCloud

running a mac mini server, system 10.6.8, purchased Jan, 2012 (same time purchased iMac with newer OS & no problems syncing). Can I upgrade this mac mini server to sync with iCloud?
    thanks in advance

    Welcome to the Apple community.
It's difficult to say whether your Mac will run Lion, and hence iCloud, without knowing the specifications. The specifications required for Lion are as follows:
An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store
7 GB of available disk space
    2 GB of RAM
However, it is sometimes simpler just to try to purchase Lion from the Mac App Store, the Mac App Store will let you know whether your Mac is capable of running Lion.
