Mac Mini Server - Can't get past...

Mac Mini Server
I'm getting the "You are unable to log in to the user account xxx" message. I click OK, then the Apple icon appears, and that's as far as I can get.
I'm new to the Mac, and have had it running for a month. Set it up initially as "Host Name for local network."
Here is where I got into trouble. I changed it now to the 3rd item, "Host name for Internet." I entered a domain name I have, "ve3zt.ca" and I recall at the time that the computer name changed to VE3ZT from local.mini, or something similar. I rebooted and am in this position. Obviously, I made a major boo boo.
As I said, I now can't get past the Apple logo. Pressing any keys on the keyboard results in a "beep" from the Mini. That's it!
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You.
Paul.

Update:
I did the "command-R" recovery and everything went smoothly. However, the message,  "You are unable to log in to the user accound "xxxxx" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred." Pressing OK brings up the Apple logo screen. Can only get out of this by pressing the power button on the Mini for several seconds.
Any advice?
Regards, Paul.

You can bypass the password and wipe the drive and return to the original facory installation if the seller included the orginal install DVDs with the Mac mini. If not you will need a retail version of Mac OS X.  To boot from the Install DVD restart the mini, immediately slip in the DVD and press and hold the C key.

On my wife's iPad mini I can't get past the screens accepting the software license to upgrade iOS over WiFi.
Works if I do it over iTunes on my desktop.
I get the screens to agree to the software license (twice) then it sits there until I get impatient. like 30-60 seconds. Have tried a hard boot but have to connect it to the computer each time. Latest was when I upgraded to 8.2

  • Mac mini server refuses to get DHCP address from router

Everything was going along fine. But after a power outage the server goes to a 169. address when the router puts out 198. addresses. If I put a static 198. address in it sees the network but won't connect to the internet. I've flashed the router (everything else sees the router fine, 3 computers and a time capsule). I've had the hardware checked at the Apple store - it picked up an address right away. After narrowing everything down the problem has to be in the operating system. I even did a full time machine restore to the day before the storm. No luck. Anyone heard of this problem.

    Mauricette has a point.
A server function is not designed to accept a floating or dynamic IP address.  If that is the case, how do you create firewall rules that prevent those unnnecessary ports being left opened from being attacked by rogue machines in Romania and China on a hourly basis when you announce to the world that your server is available if the server IP address keep changing due to the DHCP lease change?  Yes, they do have bots that do this VERY EFFICIENTLY!
By changing the very nature of your firewall rules by working with DHCP, you are opening ports you do not know to accommodate DHCP dynamic addressing, which was the reason why your Mac Mini Server stopped working in the first place.  It's ok for a client, since a client isn't serving any files to any one right.
By using client based firewall rules, you are exposing your server to attacks and when they get through your Mini server, which they can if they are persistent, they get into your home network and then whatever file server services you have opened and unprotected at the time WILL BE copied by these people easily.
I have a client once who did just that.  She was attacked, the hacker went through her network like a rampaging bull.  They were from China.  My Synology RAID server gets this attack all the time, but I have a well establish IDS system and the Synology RAID has logs that tracks attacks.
For a server setup.  Use static IP and then build a strong firewall around it and protect it and never compromise.
Recently, I just noticed someone somehow hacked and broke my WPA-PSK AES passkey for one of my Wireless N network router.  It was not set up with a strong password though, but thankgod I had a firewall around that so my internal networks were safe. So this teaches you that if someone wants in bad, they will get in.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac mini server - Can't access Internet

Hello. Using a Mac mini server as the media server for my house. Not really using any of the Snow Leopard Server services though. Wanted the larger hard drive and didn't need an optical drive so this was perfect for me. At any rate, recently noticed that the Mac mini can't access the Internet. It talks to the other Macs and Apple TVs in the house fine but it can't load a web page. I looked at the preferences and everything and can't see anything wrong. Plus, all my other computers get on the web fine. Any ideas? Is there a specific setting I should check? Thanks in advance.

Can you describe your LAN and how it connects to the internet, as well as how the device that acts as your router is configured to interact with the computers on your LAN and how the individual computers are configured to connect to the routing device?

I have lost the Mac Mini Cd which came with the box , I need to re install my MAC OS,

Is there anyone i can mail on Apple to get it done,

You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

  • New Mac mini. Can't get 'mail' to accept my password

I have an ATT e-mail address. Can't get the new Mac to accept it so I can set up 'mail'

With an ATT.net email address, under the incoming mail server, user name has to be fully qualified, ie, "[email protected]". If you just use "yourname" it won't work. Inbound mail server is inbound.att.net and outbound is outbound.att.net (this is all on the ATT site).  Under advanced options, use port 995, SSL and password authentication.
If what I've described isn't your problem, please provide more information.

  • If I buy a Mac Mini Server, can I remove Lion Server and just keep OS X Lion?

This is because it has much better specs than the regular ones.

Here was my solution to removing the 'server' software and running with standard Lion.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3108472?start=0&tstart=0
I had issue running certain software on the server version and now my machine just runs regular Lion as opposed to Snow Leopard server the issues are gone.
If you have multiple Macs you also only pay for OS X Lion once and not have to spend the extra on the server version.

  • Can I set up RAID 1 in Mac Mini Server?

Sorry if I am in the wrong forum, but would like to know if the new Mac Mini server can be set up as RAID 1 or 0 and does it require reinstalling OS after formatting, or it comes already in RAID?
    thanks,

Officially, yes, you need to off-load to a backup, configure the RAID-1, and reload onto the mirrorset.
If you're feeling lucky, you can potentially [activate RAID-1 without the archive|http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20040827122302975]; on-line. Search for (other) discussions of using the DiskUtil tool and enabling disk mirroring for various of the previous discussions.
But if something goes wrong with the on-line conversion, a bug or a power drop-out or a disk glitch or or... ?
RAID-0 is striping; two disks together presented as one bigger disk; targets I/O performance.
RAID-1 is mirroring; two disks together presented as one; targets reliability.
RAID-0 and RAID-1 (and the other RAID levels) can be hardware-based or software based.
The Mac Mini Server uses software-based RAID.
And for completeness, neither RAID-0 nor RAID-1 is an archival strategy.
As for the other question, do you have one disk showing, or two? If two, you're not running RAID-1. All of the Mac Mini Server boxes I've seen have arrived not configured for RAID-1. They've arrived as two single disks; as what the RAID folks tend to call JBOD; Just a Bunch Of Disks.

  • I set up Raid on my Mac Mini Server and lost my Server software. It is not listed in my "purchased" apps. How can I get it w/o having to purchase it? Will my serial

I set up Raid on my Mac Mini Server and lost my Server software. It is not listed in my "purchased" apps. How can I get it w/o having to purchase it? Will my serial # be enough to show it is a mini server and under warrantee be enough to get it back?

If it's not listed in Purchases, check that it's hidden, and if so, unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928 After that, go to Purchases and download OS X Server.

  • Help! Can't reinstall Lion Server on Mac Mini Server

To me, the perfect computer is a Mac Mini server (the current model) with one of the HDDs replaced with an SSD. I did this with two Mac Minis three months ago and it went perfectly.
Well. I bought a third Mac Mini and have attempted to do the following:
Carefully opened the case, removed the top parts and memory.
Removed the top 500 GB HDD
Replaced it with a OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III 2.5" SSD
Booted from a SD Card with the recovery system on it
Formatted both SSD and the other HDD, ensured they have the GUID boot block needed for Apple booting
What happened was...a total let down. It would start to download Mac OS Lion Server then tell me, "Could not find instalation information for this machine. Contact Applecare." If I went and re-formatted the SSD and tried it again, often it would go past this section, actually starting the download, but then I'd get "Can't download the additional components needed to install OS X."
I verified all connections were solid. Putting the original HDD back caused the machine to boot fine and let me set up Lion Server for use (oddly, even though I'd formatted one of the two RAID drives, but whatever). I am doing the exact same thing I did before successfully, only with an OCZ drive this time instead of Other World Computing. Either Mac Minis hate working with OCZ SSDs, or I made some mistake somehow (I'm pretty sure I didn't), or else Apple has flipped a switch forbidding software restoring of Mac Minis that have been "altered" from factory state. If so this will be a huge problem for Apple. I will make sure the major Apple blogs hear of this, if this is the case.
Can anyone suggest what else I can try to get this to install? If I can get a spare OCZ SSD so it's exactly the same as my previous successes. Otherwise I don't know what else to try.
(I guess cloning the system from one of the Mac Minis that works would be a possibility, though I want to solve this.)

Found that the second hard drive is broken. I have to go to the apple store to have it replaced.
I had to press the power button to turn the server off for several times, then the broken hard drive went disappeared. After that, I had to disable the Spotlight. Then the server went back to work normally.
Now I made a CCC copy of the primary hard drive, and would like to have the server run on the external raid disk (connected through thunderbolt). Does anyone have previous experience with it? Any expectable drawback or issue with this setup?
