Mac Mini Server HDD is corrupt and ...

I was using Disc Utility Repair/Verify on Server HDD to fix issues with the drive and it gave me the following:
Volume Server HDD found corrupt and needs to be repaired.  Reformat disc and restore back up files.
This is a Mac Mini model A1347.  Every time I start the machine, it opens with the Disc Utility page with the options to use:
Disc Utility
Access the Internet for Help
Download a new version of the OSX
Restore from Time Machine
I have tried all of these options and when I try the suggested fix, it always results in an error preventing the fix.  I have most of the files from the Server HDD saved, so if I have to reformat it, it isn't a big deal.
What is my best option?
Thanks
-Mike

IIIaass, I'm sure you are right, and it is something I need to keep an eye on.
I'm hopeful that it is up and running again, but skeptical about it at the same time because it seemed to come around after enough tries.
Though as a novice Mac user, it could be that I finally did everything right instead of haphazardly trying things?
In any event, I'll keep backing up my work and if I start to see anything crazy start up again, I'll know for sure.  What should I be looking for prior to the Utilities window cycling over and over?
Thanks again.

  • Using Mac Mini server, DNS, static IP, and external domain name

    Greetings!
I need to know the direction to take in order to use my domain name for the great features offered in the mac mini server, while having local and public access to my server with security.
I am trying to do the following on my new mac mini server:
    -Set up DNS (myserver.private)
I have a static IP I want to use for all this with my ISP
    -ftp access
    -ichat ([email protected])
    -email ([email protected])
    -ical etc. ([email protected])
-my work website(mydomain.com) with public access!
    -host websites(other domains)
I need to know the direction to take in order to use my domain name for these features. I have a domain name with godaddy, and I am happy with keeping it with them, however, how to I make my external domain name work on my private server with public access is the question?
    Thank you,
    Daniel G

[Read this|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] as a start; you're basically going to decide if you want to use NAT or not; if you have enough public static IP addresses to avoid the disaster that's NAT. If you want to use NAT (and few reasonable folks want to, but sometimes we have to), then you get to run your own DNS services internally, and establish public DNS and power-forwarding at a (preferably server-grade) firewall. With NAT, you end up with split DNS, and that's covered in the cited document.
ps: it's easier to [use sftp|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/942]; while that shares three letters with ftp, it avoids most of the problems of ftp.

  • HT4938 New mac-mini server setup without keyboard and mouse

Im trying to use the server app to setup my new mac mini server without mouse and keyboard, but the server is not listed. I have tried using its IP address with no username and the serial number as password but it won't connect. Any ideas?

You may have a version mismatch. If I recall, setup assistant is OS version dependent so if the refurb is 10.5 and the Mac Pro is 10.6 you will likely not be able to use setup assistant.
However, just use ARD or Screen Sharing to connect. If the mini is visible on the network and in the ready for setup mode, you can ssh into the machine using the root user and the first 8 digits of the machine serial number. Then you can use the kickstart command to startup the ARD agent on the system. Use these commands while in the SSH session.
    cd /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources
    sudo ./kickstart -activate
sudo ./kickstart -configure -access -on -privs -all -users <shortname>
For now, the user will need to be root because there is no user. Then screen share the system to complete the remainder of the initial setup.
In theory this will work. Works on Xserves, so I believe the minis work the same for initial setup.
    Hope this helps

  • Mac Mini Server HDD raid failure help

My server has been running for years, perfectly, most of the time. It is set up as a mirrored raid set.
I noted today that the second HDD is displaying a "failed" red flag in disk utility. I attempted to Rebuild and that failed.
In the FIRsT aid tab Verify returns errors. "This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD..restart control r....etc."
There's my problem. No monitor or keyboard. I'm using screen sharing from an imac.
Is there a way to run the server reboot remotely?
Is it time to purchase a new server or simply replace the faulty drive?
    Cheers

    Hi Chaz,
Is it time to purchase a new server or simply replace the faulty drive?
I think replace the faulty drive is thw answer.

  • How can I create RAID 1 on Mac mini server just now from box.

I bought my Mac mini server two days ago and decided that 1Tb + 1Tb HDD are very good for RAID 1 (mirroring).
Thinking - doing ... Open Disk Utility, try to change and create RAID. Nothing. Try to reinstall OS X - recovery part are on disk all time.
Does anybody can help me to create what I want and how to do this with minimum energy. Thanks a lot.

Start from an Internet Recovery which boots you into it's own Recovery Partition. From there use Disk Utility to put your 2 drives into RAID 1. Reinstall OS X from the Internet Recovery once you have done that and install everything else as you need to.
Be aware that RAID volumes do not have their own Recovery Partition so you will need to either have an external drive with an RP to boot into else you will need to use Internet Recovery each time (which is around a 650MB download).

Bassiclly what I am trying to do is have a cart for my site I host locally  I used iWeb to creat the site and it has no cart plug in I am aware of which makes it useless for ecommerce.  Other than that it is nice to use maybe im missing somethin?  So I am looking for solutions to get Zen Cart installed (easilly) to include mysql since OSX does not have it.  Some questions
Is there a good free packaged installer for mysql and or zencart?
is there a better OS cart solution for OS X ?
Can iWeb be updated by me to host an e cart, or is there a plug in I can get?

  • Mac mini server on two different location

    Hi,
With my partner we are working on very havy image file from two different location. we wont to be able to share those file to each other easly and quickly mad make sur those file are allways up to date.
    - My first idea was to install in my place one mac mini server with external hard drive (RAID 0) and install the same server in my partner place. then I would like to create a VPN connexion between both Mac Mini server and setup a kind of RAID 1 between then. link that if my partner modify an image file on the server, With a short delay I will be able to see it on my side. this solution would be the best for me as all the data would be save in two different location and I would not have any backup issue.
I did not buy the MAC mini server yet but as soon that I know the best soluiton and that it is possilbe to do so I will buy it.
    - My second idea (if the first one is not possible or if you guy's convins me that my idea is stupide) would be to have one MAC Mini server in one location setup with an external hard drive in RAID 01. my partner will need to connect to this server through VPN. This solution seems to be a good option but my partner will need to copy the file in local to work on it (few Gb eatch file) and copy it back on the server when he finish to work on it.
With this solution I will also need to organise manual backup through another hard drive to avoid to have all our data in the same location.
Witch one of those solution seems the best and can work with MAC mini server? If you have another idea for my situation I m more then happy to read it.
Knowing that other user may need to access to my file, is the MAC Mini server VPN connection safe and fast?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Chris.

The fact that you are both working on multi-gigabyte
files, the statement BDAqua made about network speed
is a big issue.  Small incremental changes in a single
multi-gigabyte file still require that entire file to be transferred.
There in lies the big issue with network speeds.
Basically, it seems idea 1 will probably not work well and
besides, RAID is for local drives and not for over networks.
One solution to the synchronization issue is have a single
computer that has the application and the data and log into
it and work remotely.  However, it sounds like these are image
files and working and any kind of graphics over a remote
connection is problematic unless there is a very high speed
    network connection.
Second idea is the simple solution.  As for the backup, that
can be automated with backup software and the backup could be
    put any where.

  • How many users on Mac Mini Server?

    Good morning,
Apple's recent changes to the Mac Mini line have thrown a wrench in a project plan I've been working. One part of the project needs a quad-core computer (FileMaker Server) and so I'm having to either search for an older model or switch up to a Mac Pro.
The other part of the project involves bringing a Mac-based server in for directory and user services, including mail.  I had planned to use the high-end Mac Mini Server but that option was removed. The office I'm supporting is about 15 people (usually a little less on the network) and most of their work will actually be done against the other computer running the FileMaker Server-based application. I was not expecting a big load against the Mac Mini Server. But these changes got me wondering, what are others' experiences with Mac Mini as a server for 12-15 people? I'm happy with qualitative and quantitative data, but I would like to know which is which. In general:
For how many users have you provided directory and user services (built in to the OS) using a single Mac Mini?
What were the specs of the Mac Mini (year or model, speed, CPU config, RAM)?
         Other thoughts?
In essence, I need to understand if people have successfully used dual core processors as Mac Mini servers in environments of 12-15 people. I've done it using a 2012 Mac Mini Server with 5-6 and the loading seems to support further growth, but would like real-world experience.
    Thanks.

Dutch Apple employee told me that Mac OS X 10.6 Server has also Windows Terminal Services equivalent.
    But this is not !
Not yet (?) available in Snow Leopard Server.

  • Mac Mini Server Doesn't Support Duel Thunderbolt Displays!

I purchased a mac mini server with the intent of ultimately running two thunderbolt displays off of it. I pre-ordered in August, waited six weeks for it to arrive and realized that the mac mini server that I had been sent was a lemon. I applied for a replacement, which was built in China and it arrived two weeks later. Everything was going great - I had my mac mini server running a thunderbolt and I was thrilled! Yesterday however, I purchased my second thunderbolt display, connected it and nothing happened. Trouble shooting didn't help. Finally, I called apple and was told that the server version doesn't support duel thunderbolt displays! I had read all of the technical specifications and there was no mention (at that time) that the server couldn't support duel displays. I am now in the process of returning my mac mini server in exchange for a custom build mac mini with upgraded 2.7 GHz i7 processors and 8GB RAM. I'm really disappointed to have to be going through all of these extra steps just to realize the system that I imagined early on. I checked the Apple Thunderbolt display options page at apple and they have now posted that the server doesn't support duel displays (but that informaiton definitely was not there when I first read it!). Why would the server version not support duel displays? To me, it doesn't make any sense. What are your thoughts?

It doesn't support dual TB displays because it uses the integrated
Intel graphics HD 3000.  Only discrete graphics cards can handle
dual TB displays.  The integrated graphics chip just cant handle
    the load.
As for the logic of it, as servers, they are usually single display
and even more often are run headless and managed remotely.
It is marketed as a server and thus the logic.

  • Mac mini server with Apple remote

    Hi,
Bought my mac mini server november last year, and much to my surprise, with it came an Apple remote. Not the latest one but the flat all-white one.
This weekend I have redeployed the mini in my house and want to start using Frontrow, however my remote does not seem to work with the mini.
I have tested the remote with a number of other maca and atvs, there it works fine.
    Any pointers appreciated
    Pim

That is really strange, the remote is not list as being in the box on the Mac mini Server's Specs page!
I believe it used to be, there was definitely a pre-formed space for it in the box
Have you checked the battery since it is an old model?
I mentioned i worked perfect with any of the other Macs in the house
You can use Mac Help in the Help menu of the Finder. Go to Index>A>Apple Remote for troubleshooting and pairing instructions.
Not sure if this is the issue, since the server version does not have an optical drive, I was wondering if it has an IR eye

  • Cannot print to Mac mini Server print server from MBP

Setup two USB printers on a Mac Mini server, they were recognized and new drivers downloaded. I can print from this machine. I shared them over LPR, IPP and SMB and announced through Bonjour
I installed the printers on a new MBP
When I try to print it starts to spool but the printer goes to pause. If I un pause it just goes back to pause.
The error log said printer does not exist, I have removed and reinstalled the printers - no change
    I have no quotas
    Firewall ports open
Have tried printing via LPR, IPP using generic PostScript driver and vendor specific
Printer service is up in Server Admin
I have not setup a an LDAP entry for this device as I thought I would not have to - am I worng here
The other odd thing is I have Parallels setup on same MBP and I loaded Bonjour there and it prints fine from the VM - wierd huh?
What have I done wrong here

How do you locate the firewall settings on the server?

The article you linked here describes Internet Recovery and says:
“If you use Internet Recovery to reinstall OS X, it installs the version of OS X that originally came with your computer.”
So that would be what I want. Unfortunately, the problem is to actually get into Internet Recovery mode, you’d have to put your Mac in a state where regular Recovery doesn’t work anymore. One article on the topic says:
‘You can’t unless you really need to.’ As long as you have a valid Recovery HD partition, trying to boot into Internet Recovery will instead boot your Mac into standard recovery mode.
Which is what I experienced here. So before killing my Recovery partition and hoping that Internet Recovery will kick in, I’ll do what Joe Bailey suggested: Download the Mountain Lion installer and let the buyer of that Mac decide which OS X flavor he wants.

  • Can I install SSD and HDD on mac mini server?

hi. I want to buy a new mac mini server with two hdd. can I replace one hdd on my ssd and leave second hdd for files? And can I install OSX on my ssd and windows on my second hdd (divide it into 2 parts... for bootcamp and file storage)? thanks

as I know, it is impossibe to install ssd and hdd in this model
Thats incorrect, who told you that?    Ive installed a second 7mm drive in several Mac Minis and own 2 myself.  Typing on same now.
(you can put in a second 9.5mm drive rather than a 7mm drive, however it takes nimble fingers unless you want to completely remove the dual drive caddy from inside the mac Mini)
see youtube video on installing second drive in the Mini

       I don't need a server.
Then you dont need the mac mini server.    All you need is a standard mac mini.
The mac mini server is EXACTLY THE SAME as the standard Mac mini quad core mini,....except with a second drive and Server software.
All current Mac Mini have a dual slot for a SECOND DRIVE

  • Mac MINI server crash and burn???

I have the new 2012 Mac MINI server.  I think it needs repairs and I am wondering if anyone has seen this.
My start up volume crashed and the system froze.  The computer automatically tried to restart but the Mac will not boot.
I get the "three beeps" indicating bad ram.
I purchased new RAM (2 chips) an 8 gig chip and a 4 gig chip.  The system ran for a while and crashed again.
I decided to re-install the system on the other 500 GIG HD (The MINI server comes with two 500 GIG HDs).
Crash, crash, crash. then the MINI will not boot and I get the "three beeps" again.
After a lot of research, I installed one RAM chip in the top slot.  I was able to install Lion on the second hard drive.
All the RAM chips are good if you use them in the top RAM slot ONLY.  If I use them in the slot closest to the motherboard the computer will not start.
THE WORST THING is that the bad RAM caused my main drive with all my important info on it to fail right in the middle of a "Time Machine" back up.
The time machine back-up folder is corrupt so I lost 12 years worth of data and will not be able to restore.
    Now what do I do?

Well not exactly DOA.  I had it for 3 months before it blew up.  That was long enough for me to get rid of all the old back-ups and use an external for the new time machine back up which is corrupt thanks to the messed up RAM.  The exteral 2T drive with the time machien folder is damaged.  DiskUtilities suggests that I reformat the drive. I used DiskWarrior and mannaged to get it back up, but the only back up available is about a month old and I do not know if it will work or not.
I purchased the extended Apple Support for an additional $150.00 so I will be sending the computer back to Apple.  I purchaed it online at the Apple Store.
I have been using a Mac sence 1988.

I have a Mac mini (Server) running Mavericks Server. The second HDD is visible on Disk Utility and About\MoreInfo\Storage, but is not visible on the finder or desktop (the preferences are set correctly).
I can see the ammoutn of files/folders in the drive via Disk Utility. Other users in the network can see the drive. I can verify the disk, but I cant seem to verify perfmision. Its grayed out.
If I try to unmount/mount the drive via Disk Utility it fails.
    Any idea?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ls -@Oaen /V* | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
