Mac mini server NON-Fusion SSD upgrade
Hey Community,
I just purchased the latest Mac mini servers and I want to upgrade one of the drives to an SSD, leaving the other HDD as a backup.
When i directly install the SSD, it automatically tries to create a fusion colume from the 2 drives.
Is there a way to put the SSD in and run as non-fusion with the HDD

Help With MAC Mini Server and New SSD
Hey Guys,
I just got a Mac Mini Server. I swapped out one HD for a new SSD. A Crucial One.
I am booting in recovery mode and it only sees one HD and says it is 1.5 TB, (1 tb regular and the new SSD is 512)
I just want to run osx on the SDD .. helpI'm unsure of the proper procedure as I'm not experienced dealing with Fusion Drive setups. If Disk Utility shows you have a 1.5 TB drive, then what do you see when you boot the computer and check disk drive space using Get Info? I know you can revert the volume you have back to standard format if you don't mind using the Terminal in your Utilities folder:
Open the Terminal and paste or enter the following at the prompt:
diskutil list
Press RETURN. This will list for you the device information for your HDD. Here is an example of the output:
/dev/disk1
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *120.0 GB disk1
1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk1s1
2: Apple_HFS Yosemite 119.2 GB disk1s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk1s3
You want what you see at the top left - /dev/diskn, where n is the integer number. Then enter or paste at the prompt:
sudo diskutil cs revert /dev/diskn ; replace the n with the integer number found above.
Press RETURN and enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the screen, so be careful typing. Press RETURN again. Wait until it completes the process which is when the prompt returns.
Given the potential danger when using the Terminal in this way, please be sure you have first made a reliable backup. Better safe than sorry. -
Mac mini server Mid 2011 Maverick upgrade problem
Help needed I have a mac mini server mid 2011
2x500gb hard drives
Hard Drive one is Macintosh HD
Hard Drive Two is Server HD
I upgraded to mavericks osx onto drive one Macintosh HD
I went to upgrade os x server for mavericks and it went to install on hard drive one Macintosh HD not the Server HD
So I formated both drives which partition map scheme is GUID Partition Table on both drives.
I done a new Install of Mavericks on drive one Macintosh HD that works fine
I downloaded OS X Server again and it is installing on hard drive one Macintosh HD and not Server HD
and it will not give me an option to Install on the Server HD.
I have also looked in the system preferances Startup disk and now I have a question mark showing.
When I open it it only shows Macintosh HD and NOT the Server HD
Can someone please advise
I'm not bad on computers but this has stuped me.
Iif anyone can help please can you explain in easy terms if there is any.
Thank youServer.app will install on the same disk OS X resides on.
What I think you are seeking here is to have the server data on the other disk, and that is configured via Server.app, once you have Server.app installed. Launch Server.app and select the server name at the top of the left column and then go to the Settings on the right side, and select where you want the service data there. -
I installed an update to OSX 10.8.5 last week. I've been unable to use Remote Desktop VNC from my Mac Pro working station or use Mocha Vnc Lite from my Ipad to gain access to my mac mini server since I applied the update. Any help would be appreciated!
Hi David,
thank you. I tried all the steps and the thing different is that now with my usual user the CC app crashes silently, but Photoshop and Illustrator generate a crash report with this message:
/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC/Adobe Photoshop CC.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/amtlib.framework/Versions/A/amtlib
abort() called
terminate called throwing an exception
With the Adobe user it runs with no problems, I even tried to do a "diff" of running user processes between the two users and remove all launchers and extensions but it's still the same.
I am a developer so I use XCode and other "dotfiles" and dirs within my home directory, I'm also using Ruby/RVM, NodeJS and some other. Can some of this stuff cause conflicts?
Thank you

Mountain Lion Mac Mini Server Ethernet Port Not Working
I have a Mac Mini Server and once I upgraded to Mountain Lion Server the Ethernet port is unresponsive. It worked before upgrading. Is there something with Mountain Lion Server that is causing the Ethernet port not to work properly?
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Hi, long story short - I returned the Pegasus, got a new Pegasus and tested it. Also the second Pegasus had the error described above. So we returned that one as well, and bought a Synology DS1513+ instead.
I do not know for sure what the problem with the Pegaus'es was, but I suspect it is this:
http://features.techworld.com/storage/1019/what-is-time-limited-error-recovery/
Shortly summarized - the drives in the Pegasus RAID box were not designed for a RAID setup. So error handling in the drives, and in the RAID box, interfered with each other, making the box marking drives faulty when they were not - and the copy job stopped because of a TLER error (Time Limited Error Recovery). Some of the error handling on the individual drives should be turned off. We ended up buying a Synology DS1513+ instead, with WD Red drives. These drives are specifically designed for RAID setups. This machine completed the copy job without error. I think the Toshiba drives (DT01ACA200) that were in the Pegasus were not designed for a RAID setup. So it all boils down to - a design flaw at the Pegasus team? -
Mac mini Server & Mavericks?
Am I supposed to update my Mac mini Server with Mavericks?
Upgrading to Mavericks server is a two step process. First you install the free Mavericks upgrade and it will give you a message about it stopping some of the server services. After that is done the second step is to purchase Server 3.0 ($19.99) from the App store and install that.
Some people have reported issue with the upgrade but mine went flawlessly. However, there is an issue with the VPN server not working correctly. Here is the link to the discussion on that issue.

Mac mini server to non server lion upgrade
I was just curious if I could install a copy of non-server lion on my mac mini server so i could get the new multi-touch gestures but still keep the same snow leopard server apps. I've heard mixed things about lion server's weaker performance so I was contemplating if I could do this.
ThanksHere is what I'm attempting to get around that 'stall'.
I created a Snow Leopard partition on a bootable external USB hard drive using a second Mac that supports booting from the retail SL disk. (This is where the server version of the Mac Mini won't work. You can't boot from a Snow Leopard retail disk).
Now I've booted my mini (running SL server) with the external hard drive.
I'm downloading Lion client from the Mac App Store.
My plan is to select the first internal hard drive as the destination for the Lion install as soon as the download has completed and the Lion install program asks me where to install Lion. -
Help! Can't install SSD in my new Mac Mini Server (2012)
Previously I've purcahsed Mac Mini servers and removed one of the two drives, replacing it with an OWC SSD. The hardware change was not hard to do and resulted in incredibly good computers for my employees to use which allowed us to retire several old, slow and abandoned-by-Apple Mac Pros. There were no issues with reformatting the computers after they had SSDs put in.
Today I took delivery of a new Mac Mini server, and started to do the same thing, removing the top HDD and sliding in my SSD, since I have many of them around. Unfortunately, the OS would NOT let me format the disks separately or remove the RAID. The volumes (the original 1 TB that was inside and my 480GB SSD) were both colored red when I booted into Internet Restore mode and ran Disk Util, something I've never seen before, and all it would do was say "there was a problem with your disk, would you like to revert it to a working state?" which in this case means Disk Util forcing my drives back into a RAID whether I want them that way or not. (At one point it fused my SSD and the 1TB drive into a single logical drive that had the correct size but didn't show separate sections, and couldn't be de-RAIDED at all, even when I connected to another computer with the Mac Mini in Firewire target mode.)
I gave up and put a 240 SSD in the lower bay, resulting in a 760GB RAID of two mismatched SSD sizes, which isn't what I wanted but I guess it will do. So far it seems to be working.
My question is, why in the heck is Apple forcing me to run my computers as a RAID and/or not letting me break the system into one hard drive and one RAID, which is what I want? (Having the backup disk right inside the computer is very handy.) Is this some feature to keep us from "making our own" Fusion drives? If Apple is deciding we can't hack or do anything interesting with Mac Minis, this will the last one I purchase, and I'm sure there will be others who do the same.
Since replacing one HDD with an SDD is likely to be the most popular mode imaginable for Mac Minis, can anyone tell me if they got a similar setup to work, and if so what did you do? Can you post the steps here for others who will be in this situation?I'm not sure how or what is different between the Standard 2012 Mac Mini and the 2012 Server...? However it looks like your Server also uses Fusion like or similar to the regular Mac Mini's.
"The version of Disk Utility that comes with Fusion Drive is unique. Earlier versions of Disk Utility can't be used with a Fusion Drive."

Mac mini Server mid.2010 upgrade to Mavericks?
Hi, my Mac mini Server (2.66GHz Intel Core Duo, 8Gb RAM) running OS X 10.8.5 does not propose me to upgrade to Mavericks through "Software Update". Does it mean it's not safe to upgrade? Why do I read that a Mac Mini more recent than 2009 can run Mavericks?
My Mac Book Air upgraded through "Software Update" so I did not do anything with the Mac mini yet. Any advice on wether to upgrad or not is appreciated. I do not use the Server part, I understand that if I upgrade to Mavericks I'll have to pay for the upgrade of the Server should I need it.
Basically my question is why doesn't the Software Update propose me to upgrade my Mac mini.OS X Mavericks requires an Early 2009 or newer Mac mini. As your Mac has got an Intel Core Duo processor, you shouldn't be able to upgrade, but to check this, open the Mac App Store and try to download OS X Mavericks. The Mac App Store will show an error if your Mac is not compatible.
If it's compatible, you will have to purchase OS X Server after upgrading. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com -
Hi, I upgraded my 2010 mac mini server to lion today.
The upgrade went fine, but on the last reboot, all I am getting is the dreaded prohibited sign. So I tried to use the Snow Leopard install disk to get to disk utility, but the dvd will not load.
The DVD & the superdrive are OK as I have checked them on my other Mac mini server of the same vintage.
Has anyone come across this before?Try to refer these resources:

Download iOS 8 once to Mac Mini Server and upgrade all iOS devices in the network
Is it possible to download iOS8 only once to the Mac Mini Server and use it to upgrade all eligible iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) in the same LAN?
I tried the following methods and they are just not working:
1. Connect an iPads Mini with Retina Display to the iTunes on Mac. I chose Download Only. Once downloaded the iPad Software Upgrade, I upgraded the connected iPad to iOS8. Then I connect another iPad (used to be on another Mac) to the same iTunes. I had to download iOS 8 again. It's not using the same downloaded iOS 8 file. (I did the same thing for an iPhone. Same result.)
2. I turned on the Caching Service (not Software Upgrade Service, i.e. for Mac Software) on the Mac Mini Server from the Server app. I then repeat step 1 above and got the same result. It seems that the Caching Service does not cache the iOS 8 Software Upgrade like what it does for other apps. (I think I may need to use some Apple Scripts but I have no such experience.)Yes, it should work that way. However, I was told by an Apple Support that there was a problem and thus Server 3.2.1 was unable to do so.
I paid for Server 4 and it better provides the expected Caching Services for both iOS Software and Mac Software through the iOS and Mac App Stores. -
