Mac mini server start and restart times

I have a new Mac Mini Server that i jsut purchased 2 weeks ago. It arrived a few days ago and i have already put ram in it and configured it as a raid 1. It seems slower now than before the ram and raid.
Current configuration
late 2012 Mac mini server
osx 10.9.3
2.6ghz i7
16gb 1600mzh ddr3 corsair vengence ram
(2) 1Tb factory apple hard drives configured as raid1(mirrored)
Start time
(4gb) 0:52m
(16GB) 0:52m
Restart time
(4GB) 1:52m
(16gb) 2:14m
Shutdown time
(4gb) 0:24m
(16gb) 1:04m
Any clue as to why my restart and shutdown times are so slow with more ram? i thought ram did not affect this. Secondly does a raid1(mirrored) affect this? it also seems a bit slower to open apps and while on the web
my late 2011 mbp smokes this thing, but it is running an ssd so its understandably going to. what I dont understand is on internet browsing the MBP is still faster. thought webspeed had nothign to do with the hard drive. im a bit new to all this.
Any help would be appreciated

  • Mac MINI server crash and burn???

I have the new 2012 Mac MINI server.  I think it needs repairs and I am wondering if anyone has seen this.
My start up volume crashed and the system froze.  The computer automatically tried to restart but the Mac will not boot.
I get the "three beeps" indicating bad ram.
I purchased new RAM (2 chips) an 8 gig chip and a 4 gig chip.  The system ran for a while and crashed again.
I decided to re-install the system on the other 500 GIG HD (The MINI server comes with two 500 GIG HDs).
Crash, crash, crash. then the MINI will not boot and I get the "three beeps" again.
After a lot of research, I installed one RAM chip in the top slot.  I was able to install Lion on the second hard drive.
All the RAM chips are good if you use them in the top RAM slot ONLY.  If I use them in the slot closest to the motherboard the computer will not start.
THE WORST THING is that the bad RAM caused my main drive with all my important info on it to fail right in the middle of a "Time Machine" back up.
The time machine back-up folder is corrupt so I lost 12 years worth of data and will not be able to restore.
    Now what do I do?

Well not exactly DOA.  I had it for 3 months before it blew up.  That was long enough for me to get rid of all the old back-ups and use an external for the new time machine back up which is corrupt thanks to the messed up RAM.  The exteral 2T drive with the time machien folder is damaged.  DiskUtilities suggests that I reformat the drive. I used DiskWarrior and mannaged to get it back up, but the only back up available is about a month old and I do not know if it will work or not.
I purchased the extended Apple Support for an additional $150.00 so I will be sending the computer back to Apple.  I purchaed it online at the Apple Store.
I have been using a Mac sence 1988.

  • Mac mini server networking and DNS setup help

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this. I'm working at a small business where I'm the only guy with any IT experience at all, but I'm new to Macs and OS X (<1 year) and being a server admin so please bear with me.
We just bought a Mac mini server as we are expanding from a bunch of workstations and Google Docs. I've just gone through the installation process, but nothing else is on the server, no user data at all, so if the answer is to reinstall from scratch, I can do it.
We'd like the mini to be a file server, print server as well as the gateway for the internet. I realize we could stick to our router and have the server as another node in the network, but we also got a Time Capsule for backing up the server and will locate it in another room to be another wireless access point there.
When going through Server Assistant, I didn't really know what to name the machine so I used corp-Server.local for the Current Hostname and corpserver.private for the DNS Hostname (though i actually use a 3-letter company acronym instead of "corp").
However, i realized after setup we'd want to access the server externally by name, so I changed the DNS hostname to server.companyname.com in the Zones tab of the DNS section of Server Admin (edited primary zone name, changed Nameservers entry for both primary and reverse zone).
I don't know what else I need to do though because there are loads of instances where corpserver.private still shows up, like in the Open Directory section of Server Admin (which btw always hangs when I open it) and the Contact Info of users (eg. user email is [email protected]). I also had trouble earlier using Server Preferences and Server Admin either not connecting or not recognizing my login, but that seems to have abated.
I guess my problem is, where else do I change the DNS hostname? Or do I have to change the DNS hostname back to corpserver.private (in Server Admin)? That way, I think at least everything will be consistent, but would I be able to still configure it somehow so that externally, we could access the server by the server.companyname.com URL?
Also, can the mini be a wireless router for the office? As mentioned before, we want to cut the existing wireless router out and use the mini instead (and use the Time Capsule as a wireless bridge).

So the ISP<->router connection can have a dynamic IP address, but the router<->server one should be static? I guess that means I have to set the IP address in the router. I hope I can get access to it. I don't suppose it matters which one I set first?
An IP router does not assign addresses.
A DHCP server does assign IP addresses upon receipt of a DHCP request from a client.
Some routers (and many firewall routers) do include a DHCP server.
A box with a static IP address does not need to send a DHCP request; it has a static address.
You'll need to ensure that the IP address pool within the DHCP server does not overlap the addresses that are manually assigned to your local hosts; the static IP addresses on your LAN.
[Here is an overview of the pieces involved here, and some of the typical terminology|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/275].
I hate to belabour the point, but I just want to clarify: in my setup where ISP<->router<->server<->clients, where the server is the only machine connected to the router, which one should be the local DNS server? The server, right? So if the DNS server is turned on in the router, I should turn it off? Or do I need both (ie. router for its LAN (to server), and server for its LAN (to clients))?
So to confirm, the configuration includes (probably) a modem, a router (firewall) and a router (Mac), and then the rest of the (local) show? That is not the simplest configuration, and it's Particularly given that Mac boxes make expensive and slow routers.
The usual configuration is ISP>firewall>LAN and the LAN is usually built from WiFi, wired connections and switches. Within one subnet (which is typical) any host inside your firewall is connected on the LAN, and can communicate (directly) with any other LAN client. The firewall is configured as the gateway; that's the default route for outbound connections.
One more thing that's bugging me: I still don't understand why I couldn't connect to the internet when I plugged in the Ethernet cable from server to router. Even if I was using DHCP to get a dynamically allocated IP, shouldn't it still have worked? I'm worried that I'm going to set up everything as it should be but the connection still won't work.
That's likely because you're trying to use the Mac as a router, and that takes specific configuration steps. It's easier to have ISP>firewall>LAN, and have the Mac OS X Server box and the rest of the stuff as peers on your LAN. If you really want to use the Mac as an IP router, look around for setting up static routes on Mac; there are postings around for that.
If your data is more valuable and your security preferences and requirements are higher, then you may want a firewall with a DMZ, and put your web-facing boxes over in the DMZ. If you're serving stuff to the web or a mail server or such, it's possible to get breached, and a breach means folks can potentially get further into your LAN. With a DMZ, they're somewhat more isolated from your LAN.

  • Mac Mini Server VPN requires restart of service after each reboot

    Mac mini Server (Late 2012)
    OS X 10.8.4
After a reboot, when viewing in Server.app, VPN service is turned on, however no connections can be made until the service is turned off then back on again.
VPN service log entry shows "Listening for connections..." but doesn't allow incoming VPN calls until the service is restarted.
Anyone else having similar issues or have suggested solutions?
    Thanks much!

  • Mac mini 2012 crashes and restarts

    Hi,
I've read similar issues to this, however here goes:
I've just bought a second hand mac mini, late 2012, quad-core 2.3 ghz i7 running Yosemite, that's just been upgraded to 16 gb ram. I don't have the original rams sadly. The computer keeps crashing and restarting when it's been in sleep mode for a while. It never crashes when I'm working on it or am using it, it's just when it's been in sleep mode for approximately 2+ hours. What could cause this? the Ram upgrade? or some dodgy file in /Library that shouldn't be there? Hope someone can help.
    /Thomas

Just to reply to you Illaass to thank for your help, and to anyone else reading in having similar problems with their mac minis.
I tried the RAMs individually, taking them out, testing them one by one, but with no luck. In the end however, I reinstalled OS Yosemite (factory reset), did a transfer from my Time Capsule (Time Machine backup) re-installing everything (user, programs, documents, computer settings). I did it in several steps, ie. first the user, checking if there was a problem = no problem, then programs, etc. It was only when I'd re-installed computer settings it started crashing again. I then did a factory reset again, installing everything from the transfer program from the time capsule, but WITHOUT installing the computer and network settings and I haven't had a problem since.
The strange thing is that I don't have a problem on my "old" mac (retina macbook pro, mid 2011, 15", ssd drive), but apparently for some odd reason, when I transfer computer and network settings from its time machine backup it screws up the mac mini. I can only guess there is some corrupt file or some software thing that's making a problem for the mac mini, as I haven't had a problem with the mac mini since.
Anyways, thanks for your input Illaass – and I hope this can be of help to anyone else out there.

  • Mac mini keeps freezing and restarting itself

I just bought this Mac Mini a couple weeks ago.  It's the dual core 2.5 processor with 4 gb of ram and 500gb hard drive I believe.  it's been working great up until today. It has frozen and restarted itself (popping up the grey screen upon restarting saying that there was a problem) about 20 times at least today.  I have noticed it has mostly been while I was on Safari.
Also, this computer came with mountain lion originally and I had a free upgrade for Mavericks and updated it to mavericks I think yesterday.
I am completely new to mac. I have an iPhone and iPad but I've never owned a Mac computer before and I've heard it's so much better than windows but now it's making me rethink my decision lol.
So anyone have any ideas?  I'm used to windows shutting down on me and I know how to fix it but I have no idea what could be wrong. Its obviously something software related. Could it be Safari, mavericks or something of the sort? Has anyone else had similar issues?
Any help would be appreciated! thanks!

Well.. I just started this thing up after letting it stay off last night and today. Upon log on it shut down and restarted itself before I even got to the main screen.

  • After changing my mac mini 2009 with a mac mini late 2012, and using Time machine for the reinstallation, Lightroom is operational but Photoshop elements is said to have a license no more valid (code error 150:30). I tried all solution I found to no avail

After changing my computer from a mac mini 2009 to a late 2012 version, all reloaded with Time machine, Lightroom works fine but Photoshop elements refuses to start (error code 150:30; "license no more valid"...). No solution found on the internet works. Any advice ? possibility to reload the application (I have kept the number of license etc.) ? Thanks in advance to anyone who could help.

Alain Picard this error often occurs due to incorrect file permissions or corruption of licensing data during the Time Machine restore.  What version of Photoshop Elements were you using?  I would recommend that you remove and reinstall it using the uninstaller located in the Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder.

  • Why does my mac mini just crash and restart out of the blue:

Crucial generally sells good RAM, perhaps the modules are not correctlly seated in the slots.
Reinstall the modules and push each one firmly into it's slot,
then swing it down into the clips.
Now if you are still having problems with the Crucial RAM, reinstall your stock RAM and contact Crucial Support.

  • Cannot start Mac mini server after changing permissions

I have a two-day-old Mac mini (server version) and all was OK until I decided to change the permissions on both hard drives (and all enclosed folders and files) to give read/write access to administrators. I received quite a few error messages about invalid kernel file extensions (I think) which I elected to ignore or override. Then when trying to log off, the machine hung.
Safe reboot does not work. I have rebooted using <Command> S and get the following amongst the many messages:
    Bug: launchctl.c:3557 (23930):17: ioctl(s6, SIOCAIFADDR_IN6, &ifra6) != -1
then at the end of display, I get the following as the last 4 lines:
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /Library/LaunchDaemons
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /etc/mach_init.d
    AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: initialization complete
There are no peripherals and I cannot try re-installing Snow Leopard for two reasons. First, I have no disk. More importantly, there is no CD drive - this is a Mac mini.
    Please help!

doing this completed scrambled your system. you now have no choice but to reinstall Snow Leopard.
and in the future NEVER use "apply to enclosed items on ANY system created folders. and certainly NEVER EVER use it on the whole system drive.

  • Using iPad and LogMein app with Mac Mini Server

Hello everyone, I'm new to the community and I would like to ask your opinions on something I'm considering.
I'm currently using a MacBook Air beyond its capabilities. I'm running a dual system via Parallels since some of my work programs are Windows based.
I'm planning to pass the MacBook Air down to one of my employees but I'm stuck on what I will purchase to replace it.
I like the new MacBook Pro, but I don't like the $2200+ price tag. So what I'm considering is buying a Mac Mini Server ($900) and setting it up in my office with a HDTV as a monitor because I use construction design programs and the laptop screen is just too small for large drawings. The Mac Mini also has 1TB storage vs 256GB on the MacPro. I already have an external disk drive so that's no issue either.
Also, since I still need mobile convenience, I'm considering downloading the "LogMein Ignition" app ($130) and using this to log in remotely with my iPad for complete access to all of my files and programs.
What are some pros and cons I should consider before making this move?
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Kevin

    > If your server is behind NAT, there is almost certainly no need for packet filtering and you should disable it.
I disagree, Linc. PF is very useful to block known bad IPs and brute force attacks, which are an hourly occurrence, especially on ssh. I use this PF configuration for OS X, which blocks brute force attacks, updates IP blocks from emergingthreats.net, and more. My logs and pf table "bruteforce" are full of attacks and blocked sites (sudo pfctl -t bruteforce -Ts). I also run snort on OS X and can see that the snort alert triggers are greatly reduced by simply blocking all these packets at the network layer.

  • FileMaker Server problem on Mac Mini Server - Mac Mini won't boot

I just installed a brand new Mac Mini Server today, and also FileMaker Server 11. A first-timer for both Mac OS X Server and FileMaker Server, I made an error as explained below, and right now I don't know how to get back on track with the system. It won't boot.
    So, how did this happen?
At first everything was proceeding according to plan. I configured the pre-installed Mac OS X Server on the Mac Mini with users, groups and services. This was tested from clients and this seemed to work just fine. Then I installed and configured FileMaker Server. This was also tested from a client, and the example database that came with FMS was served up just fine.
The problem arose when I tried to install my existing FileMaker databases. I simply checked to see where in the file system the example database was located, and then copied my old databases to that location (I think it was Library > FileMaker Server > Data > Databases or something close to it - can't check it now...). I had the FileMaker Server Admin Console running, and hit the Refresh button hoping that this would make FileMaker Server find the databases.
This was my first error. I should have read ahead in the instructions to see that one is supposed to use an Upload Database assistant instead...
What happened when I hit refresh was that the FileMaker Server Admin Console became completely unresponsive with a spinning ball as cursor. I left it for about an hour hoping it would terminate, but gave up and tried to shut it down. It wouldn't close, so I force quit it from the Finder. Then I tried to shut down FileMaker Server, but I needed to force quit this as well. After this I thought it would be best to reboot the Mac Mini, so I shut it down, but now it won't even boot, it just stays on the screen with the spinning wheel for ever!
I have tried all the keyboard options while booting, but nothing seems to help. In safe mode, the grey progress bar just grows to about one third, then disappears and leaves the eternally spinning wheel.
The server version of the Mac Mini doesn't have an optical drive, only two internal hard drives. I tried to reinstall from scratch using the optical drive on another Mac on the network. The startup disk appeared when I tried to boot the Mac Mini holding down the option key, and after about 20 minutes or so of the spinning wheel I could actually access the discs. I started by running Disk Utility to check disk permissions. There were a lot of repairs concerning permissions and groups, especially on "Library". It said "ACL differs on Library", I don't know what this is but this was repaired. I then ran Repair Disk. The volume appeared to be OK.
When I tried to reinstall Mac OS X Server however, this failed with the message
"You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed. Mac OS X Server couldn't be installed on this disk." I don't know how this can be, but I may have run software update earlier today.
What should I try next? Should I erase the primary HD and try to install again? Or should I install the system software on the secondary HD? Or should I just try to reboot as is in the hope that the disk permission repairs did the trick...?
Any helpful pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Hello there, I came across your post when browsing the forum for passive advice. I am in the same boat as you and am a first timer for both of these tools. I work for a company who now needs to expand its network and database capabilities. I have been assigned this task and these are the tools i have opted for. I have not yet purchased them and i am pleased to find someone who has my desired setup. Could you please advise on the simplicity of the setup and whether an advanced knowledge is required.
I want to use it in a mixed operating system environment. Is this possible?
    Regards
    Matthew

  • Can't Connect to Mac Mini Server 10.8

I want to use Screen Sharing to run a headless Mac Mini Server (late 2012) running Server.app under Mountain Lion.
From my Mac Mini I can connect to my iMac on the same LAN and use Screen Sharing, but I can't do the opposite, which is what I need to do. This is very frustrating because the support for this key feature is just plain awful.
Yes, screen sharing is checked under File Sharing preferences on the Mac Mini Server. And yes, both the display and the computer are set to never sleep on the Mac Mini Server.
What must I do to connect to my Mac Mini Server from my iMac so I can run the Mac Mini Server headless?
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

"Screen Sharing is currently being controlled by the Remote Management Service"
I've been fidgeting between the Server.app server Settings tab and the Screen Sharing checkbox in System Preferences Sharing pane all day.
I had tried "Share Screen" via Finder. After I tried "Share Screen" via Server.app from my client computer I noticed the above warning message when Screen Sharing in the server's System Preference Sharing pane was highlighted. I'm not sure which is cause or effect.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the server. Only "FIle Sharing," "Remote Login" and "Remote Management" are checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the server.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the client. In this case, "Allow remote administration using Server" is checked and grayed out. "Screen Sharing" is checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the client. (It may not have anything to do with a successful screen share connection, but it is on.)
Everything is now working better than expected. Thanks to you both for your help!

heres the problem; i have a mac mini server (2013) and i upgraded to yosemite a few weeks ago. first when it went into dleep mode it would not power back up; i saw this was a problem so after rebooting i turned off sleep mode & problem solved. for a few days now, on powering on the fan ran continuously then yesterday there was no video. i reset SMC & PRAM - no effect. i tried to boot to safe mode but still no video. help

Hi, long story short - I returned the Pegasus, got a new Pegasus and tested it. Also the second Pegasus had the error described above. So we returned that one as well, and bought a Synology DS1513+ instead.
I do not know for sure what the problem with the Pegaus'es was, but I suspect it is this:
    http://features.techworld.com/storage/1019/what-is-time-limited-error-recovery/
Shortly summarized - the drives in the Pegasus RAID box were not designed for a RAID setup. So error handling in the drives, and in the RAID box, interfered with each other, making the box marking drives faulty when they were not - and the copy job stopped because of a TLER error (Time Limited Error Recovery). Some of the error handling on the individual drives should be turned off. We ended up buying a Synology DS1513+ instead, with WD Red drives. These drives are specifically designed for RAID setups. This machine completed the copy job without error. I think the Toshiba drives (DT01ACA200) that were in the Pegasus were not designed for a RAID setup. So it all boils down to - a design flaw at the Pegasus team?
