Mac mini, several speakers

Hi, If I have a mac mini as a media solution in my house, can I put speakers in different rooms and control them separately in some way?

You can hook your speakers up to the Airport Express in different rooms, and select which ones to activate in iTunes.

New To Mac Mini - External Speakers

Hello - new I'm new to Mac Mini (4 days now) and the support community.
I'm trying set up my new Mac Mini and have an issue with my external A525 speaker system from my old Dell that I'm trying to connect. I know the speakers and sub are working fine, although when I connect them via the 3.5mm plug to the Mac they are aren't connecting thus can't be seen?
Can anyone help please, do I need an adapter of some kind or could the socket on the Mac be at fault?

They should connect. I took my Altec Lansing 2.1 setup straight from an old emachine and plugged it in, fired up the Mini and there was sound.
Check your AudioMIDI Setup as well
It should show "Headphones" as the output source.

Mac Mini - severe crashing

Hi there,
I recently upgraded to Leopard on my mac mini which I use very lightly, just for my oversized Mp3 collection and the odd DVD.
Anyway, recently it's been crashing very badly.. at least 3 times a day am I presented with this: www.bishbo.com/crash.jpg
I'm not really sure what to do.. this has only really started happening recently, infact, maybe since switching to Leopard? I've heard from a friend it could be RAM related.. I don't know though
It's a 1.6ghz intel, 700mb ram, not much on the harddrive as I run everything from an external..
I don't really want to buy a new Mac Mini at least until Apple release something new... if ever.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Hi.
Your machine is suffering a series of Kernel Panics. Check in Library/Logs, as there should be a file called Panic.log, which could show relevant info about the origin of the Kernel Panics.
Also, from the original disk shipped with the machine, try running the Apple Hardware Test, in extended mode if possible. In case of a RAM failure, sometimes it will show up in the AHT (but sometimes not).

Mac Mini Wireless Speakers Accessories?

Is there a Speaker Accessory for the MacMini that can be run wireless, ie. through Airport Extreme?

If by wireless you mean no wired connection between the mini and the speakers, try AirTunes.

Is Mac Mini able to run Left 4 Dead well?

I'm considering getting a Mac Mini, which will be my first Mac computer, besides that one that's black and white and had the really fun painting application, beside the point though, looking to get a Mac Mini
I was going to get the less expensive of the two "basic" models and upgrade the RAM to 2 or 4 gigs, but a major concern for me is if it will be able to run a game like Left 4 Dead, or other games with similar requirements, I don't know why, but it seems to me the name just sounds like it's not very powerful... I went over the specs, but I don't know what's good anymore, especially not with video cards, last video card I had was a ATI 500 something or other, since then I've had the misfortune of working with laptops, and have never used a NVIDIA card before so don't know much about thier numbering scheme..
Anyway, sorry for the long winded post, I have a horrible tendency to do such things

I suppose I'll give an update, considering I'm here..
I got the cheaper model, and it ran WoW well enough, 60 FPS in dead areas, 20 in Dalaran, unfortunately after a few addons/if I had ANYTHING running in the background, stuttering was very bad
As for L4D, there are times when I can tell it's having issues, but I was honestly having more problems with my internet connection not being up to snuff than the machine.
Last week I bought 4 gigs of ram, and upgraded it, I can now say that my mac mini is probably the ugliest Mac product ever, the bottom side of it has over a hundred scratches, leftover putty, and I'm pretty sure I messed up some of the pins (though, that could just be my imagination), if you can't handle a single scratch on your mini, I'd def get the pros to upgrade your ram
On the inside, the mini is really fantastic, the way they put all that in there, just amazing, pictures really don't do it justice, will say though, foam is magic for the small formfactor machines apparently, there was quite a bit of foam doing things such as reducing noise, vibration, and directing air flow. And those snap off connectors were awesome, I accidentally got the Airport's wire wrapped around something, and when I pulled the top part off, it actually pulled out, which led to several seconds of "omigawd what did I just do?!" then realizing it just pops back
I'm sorry, I just.... went off on a tangent there, but, haven't gotten a chance to try L4D yet, but now I get 60 FPS in Dalaran full of people, 30 FPS recording, but I that's what I capped it at, and this was in/around Dalaran as well, view distance 50%, Environment detail 100%, and I can listen to iTunes on the Mac Mini's speakers now, working slowly on upgrades for it, unfortunately due to various tech things dying on me it's slow going

Mac Mini drive not reading CD's

I have had my Mac Mini several years and have always been able to insert a CD into the drive and upload the songs into iTunes. Suddenly the drive refuses to recognize the CD and after a few seconds spits it out - with no message. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Mac mini: Keyboard and Trackpad irresponsive

I have a late 2010 Mac mini (in perfect condition) and I love it. It has worked flawlessly till now until I recently installed Yosemite. The keyboard and trackpad are irresponsive (freeze) when I wake the computer from sleep. The monitor would wake up though.
I have tried to restore the default sleep settings and tried every other setting but to no help. Eventually I wiped out the hard disk and reinstalled Yosemite and its not helping either. This problem did not exist before Yosemite installation. PLEASE PLEASE HELP. Its become a big issue and I have to shut down the Mac mini several times each day and I keep losing my work.

Will the new mac mini work with the older Flat panel iMac globe speakers?

I am thinking it might be time to upgrade my 800mhz FP 17", and since i have an extra 22" monitor laying around being unused, i thought the Mac mini would be a drop in replacement...but then i thought about the imac FP speakers and i would like to keep using them...is anyone using these speakers with the mac mini?

The Apple 'Pro speakers' that were designed by Apple and Harman Kardon, use a proprietary 2.5mm mini jack connector and they would need an adapter to work.

At the time, the pro speakers technology was pretty cool ... combining power and digital audio into the one cable. I still think they look striking....
I did a bit of snooping around and couldn't find the adapter for sale (aside from a used one on Amazon for $199 ouch) .... I believe it has been discontinued.
I think you'll have to follow another route.....

How can I connect multiple speakers to the Mac Mini?

Just received and setup up my new Mac Mini (Dual-Core i7, 8GB memory, 750GB disk) with OS Lion. Still in newbie phase. I have a set of 3-way Boston Acoustic speakers (w/ subwoofer) from an old Gateway computer. Is there any way/adapter available to connect them to the Mac Mini in order to improve music played within iTunes. Appreciate your responses.

Headphones versus speakers on a Mac Mini with Mac OSX 10.4.11

I just purchased a pair of headphones for my Mac Mini.
I plugged the headphones into the headphone jack on the back of my Mac Mini.
I pressed the Mute button to use the headphones and clicked on a music video but no sound came through the headphones.
I turned the Mute button off and the sound comes through my speakers.
How do I listen through the headphones instead of through the speakers?

I am trying to play my digital music off a hard drive onto my home stereo. I would like to know if the mac mini can just hook to my processor and play music through the processor(preamp) on my home stereo speakers?

I currently have a nice home stereo component system. I also have a 500 GB external hard drive loaded with music. I am looking for a way to play the music off this Hard Drive onto my home stereo system. I currently have a WD home entertainment box that I can play movies that I download off the Internet on my TV, of course piped through my home stereo for the sound. I would like to know if the mac-mini could be used in this form also. Just have the HD hooked to it, the TV would become my monitor and the mac mini would play the music ... RANDOMLY ... with the use of iTunes. This of course would be hooked up to the home system with an hdmi cable and the HD hooked up through a USB connection.

Yes. Is the short answer.
You can directly connect the speaker out port of the Mac mini to an input on the AV Receiver which then feeds your speakers. This would be an audio only solution. If you use a TOS-Link connection this will be a pure digital connection ensuring the best quality (important for audiophiles).
You can if you wish connect the video from the Mac mini to the AV Receiver, and if you have a Mac mini with HDMI or a Mini Displayport you can run the audio and video via a single cable. (Older models would use two cables, the aforementioned TOS-Link pus a DVI to HDMI cable.)
If you do connect the video output from the Mac to the AV Receiver you can then display this on your TV, and have as one possibility iTunes displayed with perhaps one of the iTunes visualisers playing along with the music. Another possibility would be to use FrontRow on the Mac.
A different approach would be to have the Mac mini stream over a network to a device e.g. the Sonos Zoneplayer which is then connected to the AV Receiver. An AirPort Express is also able to do this.

No sound from external speakers on mac mini late 2012 since installing more ram

I have just added 16 Gb of ram to my new Mac Mini now for some reason i cant get the external speakers to work, the internal one is fine? I have checked the external speakers on my netbook where they work fine. As i have only had my Mac a littlle while I am not sure if the external speaker was working before the ram upgrade.
On the System Preferences there is no external speaker option only internal?
Everything else is working fine,
Any help form the Community will be much appreciated.

your connection might be faulty try jiggling it or twisting it gently while in the headphone jack.
I stress gently since there are optical outputs in it that you don't want to scratch. if you want true surround get a receiver that supports sound through hdmi or Toslink optical Audio, the latter I know your imac supports.

No sound from tv speakers connected to mac mini (toslink/digital out)

I followed this guide: http://www.tuaw.com/2009/08/21/ultimate-mac-mini-htpc-guide-hardware/ and bought a toslink to get audio from the mac mini to the tv speakers (sony bravia kdl40v5100). However, I can't hear any audio coming out from the tv speakers. What's up?
On a side note, I got the mac mini display connected with hdmi to my tv, which works well.

According to the specs of your display, the kdl40v5100 does not allow you to make a digital audio connection between your mini and the TV, and therefore you can not use the TOSLINK cable you purchased to do this..
However, you can make an analog connection. At the back of your TV, you will notice that one of your HDMI inputs has 2 plugs next to it- a red one and a white one.
Here is a picture of the back of your set. Look at number 5. This is where you will make the connection.

(and of course, if the HDMI for the mini is not plugged into the neighboring HDMI port you will have to switch things around to do so.

Are you using HDMI or an Apple Airplay Module to go to the TV Speakers?
If you are using an HDMI it's straight through output. The internal speakers are disabled.
If you are using an Airplay Module:
- Go on iTunes
- Locate the Airplay icon that has a TV with an up arrow icon much like your iPhone has for Bluetooth
- Click on that and Airplay to ModuleName

Apple Pro Speakers from G4 Cube with Mac mini

To listen music with my Mac mini, I used Apple Pro Speakers that originally came with the G4 Cube.
But since june 2010, my system (Mac OS X) does not recognize these speakers.
The error message (via command 'dmesg') is :
Couldn't alloc class "AppleUSBTrinityAudioDevice"
