Mac mini shut down problems under Lion

Since I installed Lion on my Mac mini (mid 2010, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) I cannot shut down the Mac mini any more. I always have to shut it down by pushing the power button. Can anybody please help me? Thank you.

Hello, Yes, I see the gray spinwheel which goes on for ever.
In the meantime I have installed the lion update and I have uninstalled all applications which I do not need any longer. What I also realized is that if I do not tick "open same windows when restarting again" (I don't know the exact English version as I am using the German one) the shot down does not work properly - as mentioned above. At the end I believe I found the solution now:
- Lion update
- all apps which I don't need anymore: deleted
- all USB, Firewire etc. drives "eject"
- Shut down
It works.
Hope you also find the solution for your problems.

  • Mac Mini Shut Down Problems

I recently installed a firmware update that supposedly corrected some sleep issues. Since installing the update, I am sometimes unable to wake the computer from a sleep. Usually I can manually turn the computer off and then zap the p-ram to correct this problem.
But since the installation of the update, I can not shut down or restart the computer from the menu. I have to manually turn the computer off.

There isn't anything intrinsically wrong with Norton Antivirus which would generally cause this sort of problem - I've used it for some time on Macs in my network which are used in our email system and never had any issues with it. However, there are many potential problems with any software of this sort since in order to work they have to hook deep into the system, with the consequent risk of spurious symptoms which are rarely predictable and highly variable.
On balance, while I would be reluctant to say you should ditch antivirus software completely, I would suggest that you uninstall the Norton product so that there are no remaining traces of any active portions of it. I would then install ClamXav, which is an open source antivirus product which can then be set to watch specific folders (such as mail, desktop etc) but which has the great benefit of not hooking so deeply into the system and running with almost minimal CPU demand. In that way you will still be well protected, and be sure you are not spreading infections to PC users, while not taking the same risks with system stability and performance that more traditional AV products create.
Once done, if you continue to have shutdown issues, post back with more detail of the specifics of the situation, and information about any other utility type software you have installed or used.

  • Mac mini shut down on its own, will not restart, grey screen, spinning wheel. Unplugged everything, will still not restart. Did safe boot, will not restart after safe boot, only grey screen with spinning wheel.

Mac mini shut down on its own. Could not restart, chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Unplugged everything but monitor, still only chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Started in safe boot, shut Down, will not restart.
This happened a couple of months ago, unplugged everything and it restarted, now that won't work.

    Hi BDAqua,
I just did the repair as you suggested. T ran the disc repair, and twice it cam back, the volume macintosh seems ti be okay, I also ran the verify and permissions repair, both came back okay.
I was actually hoping that they would find something, so they could repair. I shut the computer down, and restated with out holding a key, and I started up great. I'm baffled.  I have moved 20 GB to an external hard drive, as I only had 10% open space.
I have Tech Tool 6, would you recommend to run a repair check on that, or just leave well enough alone.
I agree with you on the new Mac's, I have problems with no disc for back up, until they realize their mistake I will stay with Snow a Leopard. This is the first problem I have experienced, so I can't complain. Their last programs are not as perfected as under Steve, prior to his handling over the reins, hope this is not going to be the future we can expect from Apple.
I will wait to here back as to your suggestion regarding the Tech Tool check
    Thanks for all your help.
    Gratefully,
    Cheri

  • Mac mini shuts down after 10 seconds..

At first today, the CDs and discs kept automatically ejecting and wouldn't read (obviously). So I keep putting them back in hoping it would read or hold something. Then I restarted and the Mac Mini shuts down after 10 seconds of the seeing the desktop. Did I fry it? I did hear a weird sizzling when I put my hand on top of the mini. And is this under any warranty - I bought it Feb. 07? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Any thoughts on that?
One or two come to mind, not least that if the unit is under warranty now (as it clearly is) and they aren't taking this fault seriously, then buying AppleCare so it remains under warranty longer isn't the right solution - having them examine it and resolve the problem is.
There's no doubt at all that in the event there is a system with a suspected fault, extending the warranty long enough that the system ceases to function and can be repaired is a good thing, but it shouldn't be necessary to go to that extreme in order to get a problem resolved now!
I would simply take this elsewhere and have it looked at. While odd noises are sometimes hard to hear in an environment where there are people and other activities going on, and thus it is reasonable to expect diagnosis of them to prove difficult, a system that shuts down of its own accord after a few seconds is clearly not working correctly. To be sure, if it is overheating, then testing it when it's cold is likely to miss the problem, but the description of the fault from the user ought to give enough clues to put the system on test long enough to see what happens when it warms up. If the fault can't then be replicated with a system that is at normal running temperature and under load, then giving it a clean bill of health is reasonable.
Thus, in your place I would ask them if they did, in fact, test it in that way. Alternatively, write a description of the fault, specifically identifying the premature shutdowns and the circumstances in which they happen (if they still do) and the noises and the circumstances in which they occur (if they still do) and take the system and description to an approved service provider and let them look at it.
If the shutdowns are no longer occurring, and the noise is absent, then whether you buy AppleCare or not is really a matter of how confident you are that the problem has gone. If you have doubts that the system is running correctly, AppleCare is expensive but at least extends the warranty sufficiently that you can stop worrying too much. Alternatively, if the problem(s) still persist, rather than AppleCare, have the system examined and repaired right now.

  • MY mac mini shut down unexpectedly and now it won't restart properly

My mac mini shut down unexpectedly.  When I restarted it the screen turns blue and a box pops up that advises "Finder quit unexpectedly".  It gives me an option to ignore, Report, or Reopen.  The cursor works, but none of those button work.  I'm stuck on this screen.  I tried all the support suggestions with no luck.  What else can I do?

The "worm" as you call it is usually referred to as a Thermometer progress bar. It is showing that your Hard Drive cannot be mounted, and a Disk Utility (Repair Disk) is taking place. If not successful, your Mac will shut down, since it cannot be started up successfully.
You have unresolved Damage to the Disk Directory.
If you do not have Backups, making them should be Top Priority.
Otherwise, boot your Mac from an alternate Boot Drive. If you do not already have one, buy a drive to replace the Internal Drive currently inside your Mac, and an External enclosure to run it in. Install Mac OS X on it and boot your Mac from the fresh Install.
Then you can attempt to repair or salvage from the old drive at your leisure, using the full power of Mac OS X to do so. When your situation is stable, swap the Internal and External drives.

  • My mac mini shuts down 15 minutes into watching Netflix. Why?

After watching Netflix for 15 minutes, my Mac mini shuts off. I've tried to reboot it, log back on, but again the computer shuts off completely after another minute. I bought the Mac mini in 2008. Any idea what could be causing this problem, or how to fix it?

Check System Preferences under Energy Saver. You may have the system set to go to sleep when inactive for 15 minutes. Netflix playback isn't necessarily seen as the computer being 'active', because the keyboard and mouse are not providing any input. This may be more especially true if you are using a browser other than Safari to access Netflix.

  • Mac Mini shuts down without warning, doesn't want to re-boot again

My mini is only 3 months old. I upgraded to 2 gigs of Ram when I got it (saved about a hundred bucks). It seems to be overheating and shutting down, problem is it happens all the time. When I try to restart it, I must wait until it is cold to the touch otherwise it will lock-up and I have to manually shut it down again. I have tried raising the mini up a little to try and get some extra air underneath but no luck. Should I take it back/get it serviced?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is it just coincidence that several people are finding this issue arise at this point in time or has an update affected it (not that I've updated anything on it recently other than installing the new version of Inquisitor for Safari).
It's just coincidental I think - and given you've not updated anything, it is therefore not an update-related issue. However, the way the G4 mini's cooling system is designed, it's entirely possible for many things to potentially contribute to escalating heat issues in the system. In the first instance, the systems tend to collect dust and debris inside and around the vents as a result of the way the airflow is directed, so cleaning can be helpful. A strong vacuum cleaner used around the vents at the base and on the back can remove a lot of material and help system cooling. There's also potential for the CPU heatsink to become dislodged if the system has been opened or subject to movement or vibration, or for the thermal paste between it and processor to degrade, reducing efficiency of the heatsink. In addition, there's a thermal pad squeezed between the underside of the logic board and the base of the casing, designed to help draw heat from the CPU and dissipate it that way. The pad can deteriorate - it's a service part so can be replaced. Add to that the possibility for the fan to fail, and for any combination of the above to occur, and you have a number of scenarios in which an otherwise healthy Mac mini can begin to show thermal problems.
In your situation, I'd start by cleaning the system out. If you've previously opened it, I'd say do so again and take some time to ensure that all dust and debris is removed - blowing through the system can be sufficient for that. Also check the heatsink is secure and that when running, the fan is actually spinning. If you haven't previously opened it and don't want to try, try the vacuum cleaner method on the vents to see if that helps.
If those steps don't help, then it becomes increasingly likely the system needs some service attention, and the thermal pad and paste become likely culprits.

  • Mac mini shut down with USB and USB Over Current Notice

I just spent the day dealing with my mini shutting down when I connected my iphone.  If I left it connected at restart, I got the infamous USB Over Current Notice.  I tried all suggestions and finally used an apple connector instead of the one I had been using.  Everything OK again... Other comments?  It was very time consuming and frustrating.

Do you have other devices connected to USB ports ?
Try to connect with a powerde hub in between.

  • Windows side of Mac Mini shuts down saying RAM is causing problem

My windows side of my Mac Mini periodically shuts down saying there is a problem with the RAM saying I need a BIOS upgrade. What is that and can I do it or do I have to take it in or do I have to reinstall everything and give the windows side more hard drive? Currently my windows side is using 17GB of hard drive and I have 9 left after installing my windows and my bookkeeping program. If I have to give it more Har Drive how do I do that withouth reinstalling everything?

    Welcome!
Could you possibly give us the exact error message?
Are you running Windows via BootCamp, or are you using Parallels Desktop to run Windows.
Which version of Windows: XP, Vista, or what?
How much RAM do you have in your Mini? Was more RAM installed after it left the factory?

  • Mac mini shuts down during startup

Lately my Mac mini running osx lion got really slow and then when I shut it down for the night the next morning I tried to boot it up. It didn't boot up after 2 hours of grey screen and spinning wheel. I tried clearing my NVRAM but nothing happened. After that I tried to repair the disk but it said "cannot repair disk, backup as many files as you can and reformat the disk". After that I tried to reboot again and After about 30 seconds it shut down. During those 30 seconds it was normal except for there was this loading bar at the bottom. I have no Mac osx install disk because when I upgraded I just did it through the app store. Is there any way to backup my files without being able to use my computer?

See if the Mini will boot into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
If so it shoud appear as a FW drive the other Mac, we can check the system logs on the Mini for clues, or perhaps Repair the Disk if the other Mac is same OSX or newer.

  • Mac mini shut down when start

    Hi all,
My Mac mini doesn't want to start anymore ... I have run the Apple Hardware Test from the CD and all seems ok (all test are ok) but when I try to start on the hard drive, the mac mini suddenly shut down
Where it can comes from ? hard drive failure ? how can I diagnostic the issue ?
I am afraid to reinstall Mac OS X from the CD because I don't want to lose my date :[
Thanks in advance for your help and advices
    Victor

    Hi,
my Mini has been also suddenly shutting down. Power light goes off. Not at start-up. First it lasts longer, but gradually, as I restart it, it gradually takes less and less time to suddenly shut down. Or yesterday, for example, I tryied starting it up and not touching it. It lasted for hours. Thought it was cured. Then I popped a CD in and opened iTunes. Didn't take to long before it was shutting down all of a sudden. It would seem not to be able to take any activity. Here is a Console Message I run a few days ago:
(in the meanwhile I'll try Safe Mode)

  • Mac mini shuts down on its own during sleep shows a prolonged white screen when starting

10.9.4 2.4 f 8 g menmory ..shuts down by itself when it sleeps..when I restart in the am I get a prolonged white screen.  took it to a genius bar who found it checked out ok. but found a slightly loose monitor jack was loose...recomended more ram which I did . then reinstalling my os which I have not done...iphoto lost everything too...as my brother Tim used to say whattttttt ?

    From the news page here...
    http://xlr8yourmac.com/
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

"Why 2012 iMac/2012 Mac Mini won't Wake After Hours of Sleep (Hibernates/Powers Off)")
The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

  • My Mac mini shuts down instead of sleeping.

I've been leaving my brand-new Mac mini on, assuming it would go to sleep like my macBook or dear, departed iMac would.  I'm running OS 10.8.4, and I have the Energy Saver settings so the display goes to sleep after 15 minutes and the CPU sleeps after 1 hour.  Instead, I return to find it shut down, hard: no white LED (blinking or steady), it won't respond to keyboard, mouse clicks, or even the power button.  The only way I can get it back is to unplug the power cord, then do a full-up start.  I have a Belkin powered USB hub attached and a Firewire external HD for Time Machine.
I need to know before the warranty expires--is this a hardware issue?
I'll be really upset if all the migration and setup I just did was a waste of time because of a hardware defect.  I ultimately plan on making this a home theater PC, and if I can't rely on it to stay turned on, it'll be useless to me.

    1. Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    2. Click Schedule.. on the Energy Saver pane and make sure that you haven't accidently set it to Shut down at a given time.
