  • Mac mini shuts down after 10 seconds..

At first today, the CDs and discs kept automatically ejecting and wouldn't read (obviously). So I keep putting them back in hoping it would read or hold something. Then I restarted and the Mac Mini shuts down after 10 seconds of the seeing the desktop. Did I fry it? I did hear a weird sizzling when I put my hand on top of the mini. And is this under any warranty - I bought it Feb. 07? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Any thoughts on that?
One or two come to mind, not least that if the unit is under warranty now (as it clearly is) and they aren't taking this fault seriously, then buying AppleCare so it remains under warranty longer isn't the right solution - having them examine it and resolve the problem is.
There's no doubt at all that in the event there is a system with a suspected fault, extending the warranty long enough that the system ceases to function and can be repaired is a good thing, but it shouldn't be necessary to go to that extreme in order to get a problem resolved now!
I would simply take this elsewhere and have it looked at. While odd noises are sometimes hard to hear in an environment where there are people and other activities going on, and thus it is reasonable to expect diagnosis of them to prove difficult, a system that shuts down of its own accord after a few seconds is clearly not working correctly. To be sure, if it is overheating, then testing it when it's cold is likely to miss the problem, but the description of the fault from the user ought to give enough clues to put the system on test long enough to see what happens when it warms up. If the fault can't then be replicated with a system that is at normal running temperature and under load, then giving it a clean bill of health is reasonable.
Thus, in your place I would ask them if they did, in fact, test it in that way. Alternatively, write a description of the fault, specifically identifying the premature shutdowns and the circumstances in which they happen (if they still do) and the noises and the circumstances in which they occur (if they still do) and take the system and description to an approved service provider and let them look at it.
If the shutdowns are no longer occurring, and the noise is absent, then whether you buy AppleCare or not is really a matter of how confident you are that the problem has gone. If you have doubts that the system is running correctly, AppleCare is expensive but at least extends the warranty sufficiently that you can stop worrying too much. Alternatively, if the problem(s) still persist, rather than AppleCare, have the system examined and repaired right now.

  • Mac mini shut down on its own, will not restart, grey screen, spinning wheel. Unplugged everything, will still not restart. Did safe boot, will not restart after safe boot, only grey screen with spinning wheel.

Mac mini shut down on its own. Could not restart, chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Unplugged everything but monitor, still only chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Started in safe boot, shut Down, will not restart.
This happened a couple of months ago, unplugged everything and it restarted, now that won't work.

    Hi BDAqua,
I just did the repair as you suggested. T ran the disc repair, and twice it cam back, the volume macintosh seems ti be okay, I also ran the verify and permissions repair, both came back okay.
I was actually hoping that they would find something, so they could repair. I shut the computer down, and restated with out holding a key, and I started up great. I'm baffled.  I have moved 20 GB to an external hard drive, as I only had 10% open space.
I have Tech Tool 6, would you recommend to run a repair check on that, or just leave well enough alone.
I agree with you on the new Mac's, I have problems with no disc for back up, until they realize their mistake I will stay with Snow a Leopard. This is the first problem I have experienced, so I can't complain. Their last programs are not as perfected as under Steve, prior to his handling over the reins, hope this is not going to be the future we can expect from Apple.
I will wait to here back as to your suggestion regarding the Tech Tool check
    Thanks for all your help.
    Gratefully,
    Cheri

  • MY mac mini shut down unexpectedly and now it won't restart properly

My mac mini shut down unexpectedly.  When I restarted it the screen turns blue and a box pops up that advises "Finder quit unexpectedly".  It gives me an option to ignore, Report, or Reopen.  The cursor works, but none of those button work.  I'm stuck on this screen.  I tried all the support suggestions with no luck.  What else can I do?

The "worm" as you call it is usually referred to as a Thermometer progress bar. It is showing that your Hard Drive cannot be mounted, and a Disk Utility (Repair Disk) is taking place. If not successful, your Mac will shut down, since it cannot be started up successfully.
You have unresolved Damage to the Disk Directory.
If you do not have Backups, making them should be Top Priority.
Otherwise, boot your Mac from an alternate Boot Drive. If you do not already have one, buy a drive to replace the Internal Drive currently inside your Mac, and an External enclosure to run it in. Install Mac OS X on it and boot your Mac from the fresh Install.
Then you can attempt to repair or salvage from the old drive at your leisure, using the full power of Mac OS X to do so. When your situation is stable, swap the Internal and External drives.

  • Mac mini shutting down with screen(s) running commands/code?

My mac mini started shutting down while in use. It then runs commands or code very quickly over screen after screen. Have to restart. Keeps happening. Can you help?

    Hi and welcome.
Could you give us a bit more history about your Mini and what lead or leads up to this?
Do you have a G4 Mini (2 usb ports), CoreDuo/Core2Duo Intel Mini (4 usb ports), or a 2009 Intel Mini (5 usb ports)?
What version of OSX are you running? (Apple Menu > About this Mac)

  • Mac sometimes shuts off while asleep

I've noticed a couple of times recently that my Mac has shut off while it's been closed and asleep. What could be causing this?

    Hello Henning,
It usually is best to start your own topic concerning your issue. Even though your problem may seem similar to the original poster your question can often be overlooked by those that can help.
That said, have a look at the thread found @:
"Mac Pro Shuts down when sleep selected"
perhaps this may apply to your problem. Following is the link for instructions for resetting the SMC.
"Mac Pro: How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC)"
I would post a new topic though of your own and better in the Mac Pro forum.
    hope that helps some,
    LS

  • 2012 Mac Mini shuts down at night on its own.

Every night for the last week my Mac mini shuts all the way down at night.  I have not made any changes to this machine it just started doing this on its own.  When I reboot in the morning it tells me that the computer has shut down and then gives the following for the error report:

  • My mac mini shuts down 15 minutes into watching Netflix. Why?

After watching Netflix for 15 minutes, my Mac mini shuts off. I've tried to reboot it, log back on, but again the computer shuts off completely after another minute. I bought the Mac mini in 2008. Any idea what could be causing this problem, or how to fix it?

Check System Preferences under Energy Saver. You may have the system set to go to sleep when inactive for 15 minutes. Netflix playback isn't necessarily seen as the computer being 'active', because the keyboard and mouse are not providing any input. This may be more especially true if you are using a browser other than Safari to access Netflix.

  • Mac mini shut down with USB and USB Over Current Notice

I just spent the day dealing with my mini shutting down when I connected my iphone.  If I left it connected at restart, I got the infamous USB Over Current Notice.  I tried all suggestions and finally used an apple connector instead of the one I had been using.  Everything OK again... Other comments?  It was very time consuming and frustrating.

Do you have other devices connected to USB ports ?
Try to connect with a powerde hub in between.

  • MAC AIR SHUTS DOWN WHILE STREAMING

My MacBook Air shuts down while streaming video.  I am using safari and it works for a while but then shuts down and will not restart for quite some time.  When it restarts I have to immediately close the video window or it will shut down again.  I have the latest version of flashplayer.

This sounds like an overheating issue.  Flash requires a surprisingly high level of resources.  Do you hear your fans running at all while you are playing the videos?
Download the free iStat Pro widget directly from Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
It will show you both your fan speeds and temperature.  Start playing a video and let it play for a short while (sometime before it typically shuts off... but long enough to let things warm up).  Then check the temp and fan speed.  Do this while the video is still playing as things can cool off pretty fast after you stop playing the video.  Post the numbers back here.

  • Randomly shuts down while asleep

My dual G5 randomly shuts down at night for no apparent reason. I have reset the power management, but it still continues. It might go a week without shutting down at night, or maybe every few days. ONe interesting thing, I have Quickeys installed, but not open, yet the F4 key set to "sleep" functions without Quickeys being open? I have not set any key to shut down.
Any suggestions as to where to look would be appreciate.

I have the same problem. My quad G5 will shut down when asleep. There is nothing about this in the log. One log suddenly stops and then there is the log of the startup. Here is a part of the log from the last occurrence:

  • Pismo shuts down while asleep. PMU cause -96?

Hi. My Pismo has recently started to shutdown unexpectedly while asleep. Since it's intermittent, I can't really tell if it realy goes to sleep and then shuts down or if it just dies when I close the lid, but not only MacOSX took notice of a forced shutdown (and offered to report it to Apple, but the CrashReporter never came up), it also had a line in system.log with "localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -96".
Now, I know that ApplePMU messages seem to be some kind of state secret at Apple and that several guys with G5s are having problems with cause -122, but does anyone have any experience with this?
I've only been noticing it lately because I have a new battery and now I keep it sleeping far longer than before, because my old battery only had 5 minutes of life in it and this Pismo was basically chained to a wall.
    Powerbook G3 Firewire   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1GB RAM, 40GB HD, Airport

    Tiago,
I don't know what the error -96 represents, but I have seen the same PMU Forced Shutdown with numbers like -122 and -127 (again, no info).
I would reset the power manager and PRAM, then test.
You mentioned not knowing if it crashes or shuts down immediately; if you see the pulsing sleep light, it still is sleeping normally.
Does this issue occur only on battery or also when connected to the power adapter?

  • Mac mini shut down when start

    Hi all,
My Mac mini doesn't want to start anymore ... I have run the Apple Hardware Test from the CD and all seems ok (all test are ok) but when I try to start on the hard drive, the mac mini suddenly shut down
Where it can comes from ? hard drive failure ? how can I diagnostic the issue ?
I am afraid to reinstall Mac OS X from the CD because I don't want to lose my date :[
Thanks in advance for your help and advices
    Victor

    Hi,
my Mini has been also suddenly shutting down. Power light goes off. Not at start-up. First it lasts longer, but gradually, as I restart it, it gradually takes less and less time to suddenly shut down. Or yesterday, for example, I tryied starting it up and not touching it. It lasted for hours. Thought it was cured. Then I popped a CD in and opened iTunes. Didn't take to long before it was shutting down all of a sudden. It would seem not to be able to take any activity. Here is a Console Message I run a few days ago:
(in the meanwhile I'll try Safe Mode)

  • Mac mini shuts down on its own during sleep shows a prolonged white screen when starting

10.9.4 2.4 f 8 g menmory ..shuts down by itself when it sleeps..when I restart in the am I get a prolonged white screen.  took it to a genius bar who found it checked out ok. but found a slightly loose monitor jack was loose...recomended more ram which I did . then reinstalling my os which I have not done...iphoto lost everything too...as my brother Tim used to say whattttttt ?

    From the news page here...
    http://xlr8yourmac.com/
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

  • Mac Mini Shut Down Problems

I recently installed a firmware update that supposedly corrected some sleep issues. Since installing the update, I am sometimes unable to wake the computer from a sleep. Usually I can manually turn the computer off and then zap the p-ram to correct this problem.
But since the installation of the update, I can not shut down or restart the computer from the menu. I have to manually turn the computer off.

There isn't anything intrinsically wrong with Norton Antivirus which would generally cause this sort of problem - I've used it for some time on Macs in my network which are used in our email system and never had any issues with it. However, there are many potential problems with any software of this sort since in order to work they have to hook deep into the system, with the consequent risk of spurious symptoms which are rarely predictable and highly variable.
On balance, while I would be reluctant to say you should ditch antivirus software completely, I would suggest that you uninstall the Norton product so that there are no remaining traces of any active portions of it. I would then install ClamXav, which is an open source antivirus product which can then be set to watch specific folders (such as mail, desktop etc) but which has the great benefit of not hooking so deeply into the system and running with almost minimal CPU demand. In that way you will still be well protected, and be sure you are not spreading infections to PC users, while not taking the same risks with system stability and performance that more traditional AV products create.
Once done, if you continue to have shutdown issues, post back with more detail of the specifics of the situation, and information about any other utility type software you have installed or used.
