Why is my mac mini slower performance after upgrade to OS X Mavericks.
Since I updated my standard mac mini mid 2011 ( CPU I5 2.5 GHz , 4 GB 1333 DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 6630 256 MB DDR5 , 500 GB harddrive 5400 ) to OS X Mavericks it starts up slower , operates slower when working on it and shuts down slower then when OS X Lion was installed.
In short for me it does not perform as it has been advertised , being the better, easier and faster new OS X.
Is this something that will be resolved or is this it ?Here's the result of etrecheck maybe somebody can tell me if there is a problem :

Slower performance after Mavericks upgrade
My Macbook Pro has been significantly slowed down by my upgrade to Mavericks. (Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7) (Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) (Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB) I can't watch a 2 minute video without long... long rendering pauses. I get error messages and find the computer quits and starts again at random moments. Loading apps is slower. I am not talented technically and need some layman version of how to use time machine or other backup info to go back to my Mountain Lion IOS or how to fix this deterioration of my computer performance. I have run the etresoft app to provide more info. Unfortunately I am very much a novice at problem solving computer issues so if this is above my paygrade please feel free to send me to more competent sources..

Assuming you have no reason to use it:
Navigate to the following folder by selecting the entire line (triple-click to select it), then control-click, and from the contextual menu that appears, select Services > Open:
/System/Library/StartupItems/
Find the file WiFiUtilityStartUp and drag it to the Desktop. You will need to authenticate.
Next: Open System Preferences by selecting it from the (Apple) menu, then select Users & Groups. Click the lock icon and authenticate, then click your User account. Select the Login Items tab, then select the item WirelessUtility. Delete it with the "–" (minus) button.
Next: Backup Engine is not part of OS X either, and is unrelated to Time Machine, which you are using. It may have been installed as part of a utility supplied by Seagate or other hard disk manufacturer. Such utilities should not be used on Macs. If you have no reason to use Backup Engine, delete it as well using the "–" button.
Quit System Preferences, log out, and log in again. Reply with your results. -
Mac mini server Mid 2011 Maverick upgrade problem
Help needed I have a mac mini server mid 2011
2x500gb hard drives
Hard Drive one is Macintosh HD
Hard Drive Two is Server HD
I upgraded to mavericks osx onto drive one Macintosh HD
I went to upgrade os x server for mavericks and it went to install on hard drive one Macintosh HD not the Server HD
So I formated both drives which partition map scheme is GUID Partition Table on both drives.
I done a new Install of Mavericks on drive one Macintosh HD that works fine
I downloaded OS X Server again and it is installing on hard drive one Macintosh HD and not Server HD
and it will not give me an option to Install on the Server HD.
I have also looked in the system preferances Startup disk and now I have a question mark showing.
When I open it it only shows Macintosh HD and NOT the Server HD
Can someone please advise
I'm not bad on computers but this has stuped me.
Iif anyone can help please can you explain in easy terms if there is any.
Thank youServer.app will install on the same disk OS X resides on.
What I think you are seeking here is to have the server data on the other disk, and that is configured via Server.app, once you have Server.app installed. Launch Server.app and select the server name at the top of the left column and then go to the Settings on the right side, and select where you want the service data there. -
New Mac Mini wont boot after OS upgrade
I bought a Mac Mini Yesterday i7 1tb disk
Wire keyboard and track thingie
my first mac
First decided to upgrade OS to latest version
Its been 24 hours and I have not gotten past the grey screen with these 2 spinnung wheels
DaveTake each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Step 3
Boot in safe mode.* The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Post for further instructions.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
Step 8
A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. -
Awful scrolling / animation performance after Mavericks "upgrade"
After updating from Mountain Lion to Mavericks my 2012 Macbook Pro 13" (non-retina) with 16gb ram feels almost unusable. Scrolling in Safari is appallingly jerky and jagged, both with text and images. Dock animation is not as smooth as Mountain Lion but I can probably live with it. The Expose animation is laughable- seems to be rendering at about 1 or 2 frames-per-second! All-in-all a Hackintosh Dell Mini 9 that I used several years ago gave a more polished OSX perfomance than this. Any ideas?
Hey ubiquity0!
I have a few articles here with some troubleshooting steps for you to try that may help resolve your issue:
OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10798
OS X Mavericks: If graphics-intensive tasks slow down your Mac
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13952
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

All apps slowed down after Mavericks upgrade.
As a non techie senior I approached the upgrade to Mavericks from OS 6 with trepidation , knowing many apps would be incompatible. An accidental sun with iCloud removed all my iTunes . I recovered them from the Time machine. The WI FI network link intermittently goes out. (not sure this is related). The important ones all work, but loading of all Applications including this page) is much slower, especially web page loading. Hearing about others with similar issues, I attached an EtreCheck report. Any help would be appreciated.

Mac OS slow performance after bootcamp installation
So, I've been searching around here and on other forums, but I haven't found a solution yet to this problem and wanted to see if others knew of it. The problem is that the performance on Mac OS seems to have degraded when I have bootcamp (with WIndows 7, 64bit) installed. I've gone through uninstalling and reinstalling bootcamp a couple of times now and the result always seems to be the same, Mac OS is much slower... although I should note that the Windows side of things seem unaffected, and I'd say that (gasp) WIndows is running more smoothly that the Mac OS on m machine. Pretty **** annoying.
Some symptoms:
- Slow boot time AFTER I log in. The loading of the desktop and apps seems to take forever, when prior to bootcamp they'd all pop-up in maybe 10 seconds max. Note: this is not the general boot-time from OFF to the login screen... that's fine.
- Loading applications (safari, terminal, etc) all seem to take forever to load. For instance, safari may take 30-60 seconds to load and show my home page. Before bootcamp, this would take a few seconds.
- Once in Safari, the load time from page to page seems slow and jerky. Say I load engadget.com, or something equally image/content heavy, it seems like the whole page has to load before I can even start to scroll. Even then, scroll seems 'jerky' and not so smooth. Again, before bootcamp, this wasn't a problem.
I've gone through a bunch of stuff to try and fix this, but nothing so far has helped. Here's what I've done so far:
- repaired permissions
- used disk utility to verify/repair any problems (it didn't find any problems, btw)
- reset PRAM
- rebuilt spotlight index
- disabled spotlight indexing of the BOOTCAMP by placing a file called '.metadataneverindex' in the root directory on that partition. This interestingly helped speed up the the post-login boot-time, but application loading and browser performance is still pretty bad.
Anyone else have these issues and figured out what's going on? An IT guy at my job told me to stay away from bootcamp 'because 'it'll slow down your machine', so I don't think this is an isolated occurrence.
From what I've read all over the place, I shouldn't be taking a performance hit on the Mac OS side of things for installing bootcamp. Any thoughts tips you could provide would be helpful.
*I might use Parallels or some other VM down the line, but I don't want to run Windows 7 solely in a VM. Yes, I HAVE tried installing Parallels with Windows 7 and it didn't slow anything down, but due to the nature of my work, I want to be able to boot to Windows directly without having any overhead. (this is small percentage of what I'd be doing with the Mac, but enough that I wanna get this bootcamp install working)Sorry, Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz... pretty much a stock 13" new MBP. I'm running bootcamp 3.0.2.
I should also note that I was having this issue last week and decided to reinstall everything and start from scratch just to see if that helped. It's a new-ish Mac, so clearing everything out wasn't that big of a deal... other than taking the time to do it. I didn't use a time machine backup as I wanted to reset everything.
So, I think I've figured this out after fiddling with the user accounts per your suggestion. I had set up my Mac so that my general-use account was 'standard' with a separate admin account for installing stuff.(more secure) This was different from what I had setup last week where I had one account that was setup as the admin. (less secure)
I added a new user, 'test' as a standard account. I restarted into 'test' and still had an issue. I quick-switched over to my admin account for something and immediately noticed that everything speed up. Hmmm...
I changed my regular account back to admin and that restored the performance on my mac to its pre-bootcamp state. (happy!) I'll need to play around with this more, but it seems that the two things I did to fix this were:
1) Add the file to the bootcamp partition to exclude it from spotlight
2) Login as an admin account
I haven't had a chance to see if setting my account back to a standard account will in fact cause the performance to drop. I also then need to test with removing that file from BOOTCAMP to exclude it from spotlight. Right now, I think I have more correlation than causation, but at least it IS working well again.
I'll update later today. Hopefully I'm not going to have to leave my main account as the admin.
*ALSO, I tested out configuring Mac OSX to immediately unmount the bootcamp partition at login, and that did help with performance, but kind of made using Parallels a PITA as I had to then go and manually mount that partition when I wanted to get into Windows through parallels. It worked, but it was a janky work-around. I have since dropped that configuration and now just let BOOTCAMP mount. -

The query returns a single row, because it calculates the sum. The query could be better written to get rid of IN or NOT IN which are costly. But I just wonder why the plans/performance are so different?
I used analyze to analyze other tables and it is still working fine in 10g. Now based on the plans, do you think anything wrong ?

Slow computer after Mavericks upgrade
A while ago I had to update my Mac to OS X Mavericks (Version 10.9.5), but I experience that this has made my computer slow. It is slow when starting, when I use the internet, when I search files on the computer etc. Not incredibly slow, just annoyingly slow.
I had to do the upgrade to Mavericks to be able to run a program I use frequently.
I have a lot of free storage: 526 Gb free (out of 749 Gb).
Now I wonder if there is anything I can do to make the computer faster? Should I upgrade to Yosemite - or should I definitely not do that?
I'd appreciate very much if there is any good advice out there.
My computer is a MackBook Pro (15-inch) from mid 2012.

Mac Mail not working after Mavericks upgrade
After successfully updating to Mavericks, Mac Mail app does not launch (window does not appear on screen) and requires force quit to stop. I also have Outlook loaded and it started up and works fine. I would rather use Mail. Anyone else have this issue? Is there any easy fix? The app doesn't launch completely so I can't clear any of the accounts to try to start Mail fresh.
Here's my issue and how I fixed it. If you have this problem then try what I did.
When I lauched Mail, it appeared like it opened but then wouldn't display any windows at all and wouldn't
update my mail count on the icon.
Within mail there is options to display. The setting was set to "assign to none". That makes mail appears as though it is not working and seemed to bottleneck how mail operates.
In the dock - click and hold on Mail - open Options and chose the display you wish to assign the window to display
mail.
Hope this helps. -

I've just purchased a mac mini 2.5Ghz with Mavericks preinstalled. I've added 8GB ram so it has 10gb. Apart from that everything else is standard. I've moved from a iMac with Lion and it was much faster to boot up. The mac mini takes about 1.5 - 2 minutes to get to the login screen. I'm thinking an SSD will help but I don't want to pay for one just yet.
When i'm logged in, everything runs fine. I've only had one strange issue. I've had this mac mini for a week and I've looked through suggestions boards, I will try the sudo commands that have been referenced in the communities. But I am feeling like mavericks is the Windows equivalent of Vista. I understand that there hasn't been updates to the Mac mini hardware wise for sometime, but in the past with other upgrades I've done (but with other models) there haven't been any issues like these ones with boot times.
I am interested to see if other mac mini users also have these issues - it seems more to be a mavericks issue. I am just a bit flabbergasted that I never even though this could be a problem. Thanks, I think I really need to get an SSD - been reading alot in the last 30 minutes about the improvement. For now I will put up with it because I don't want to spend the money just yet. I'm pretty darn pleased with my mac mini i'll be gutted if they remove these from the line up!!!

Slow performance after iOS 7.1 upgrade, please help.
My kids have iPad Airs. One of them has a serious slow down in performance after upgrading to iOS 7.1. The others work fine. It is so slow that it is unusable. When you type a single character, it takes several seconds to show up on the screen. I'm rebooted and did a reset in Settings. Any other ideas? Please help.
I called Apple Support (800-275-2273) and they also recommended a reset: "Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears".
It came to a screen with a USB cable and arrow to iTunes logo. I had to connect to my PC and lanuch iTunes. iTunes recognized the iPad in restore mode. My only option per Apple Support was to restore to factory defaults. It appears all data is lost.
The Apple Support person would not admit that this is a known issue with iOS 7.1 even though you can go online and see that may people have slow performance after upgrading to iOS 7.1. -
Mac mini slow to start, not responsive
My late 2010 Mac mini is performing slowly and erratically.
I recently upgraded it to Lion, hoping all the bugs in Lion had been killed.
It doesn't mount my external hard drive, a firewire drive from OWC that is my designated Time Machine drive.
When I tried to create a new folder on another firewire external drive, I got an unexpected error code 50.
I have restarted the machine from the power button and from the apple menu about six times now. Each time the desktop and icons appear after about 2 minutes, but the Mac does not respond to the keyboard or mouse until about 10 minutes after restart.
When I double-click a disk icon, it takes about 5 seconds to open a window.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
-RobinSome have reported poor performance with Lion in 2GB of memory, and found that upgrading to 4GB fixed their problems. So that may be part of your solution. Memory is cheap now .... Crucial at http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Mac%20mini%20(Intel%20Core%202 %20Duo%202.4GHz)%20DDR3%20-%20Mid%202010&Cat=RAM has a single 4GB memory card for $23 (that would take you to 5GB, 4+1) or two 2GB cards for $30. You can usually find a 5% off online coupon at retailmenot.com and Crucial has free shipping. OWC at http://www.macsales.com has similar prices on their memory.
You can do an SMC and PRAM reset, which may make a difference:
SMC reset:
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM:
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
