Mac Mini, Sonology NAS, And Apple AirPort wireless router, Will this work?

OK, so my plan is to create a home movie server for the living room and the kitchen as illustrated in the diagram. I Plan on using a mac mini (current generation) as the liaison between the NAS and the receiver. I will install XMBC on the mac mini’s as a movie organizing software. I will use the iPad app to control and select movies from the system. This setup will repeat in the kitchen with the exception that I will connect the mac mini directly to the television in which the audio out will go to a jack which connects to the in ceiling speakers. Will this work? Are there any other suggestions that anyone has to make it more streamline? I also assume that there can be simultaneous movies being watched in both rooms via the NAS. Thanks for all of your comments and help

in theory, yes, but you work network admin may have locked the network preventing this from working

Boot from your install disk and when you reach the Install screen choose Change Password from the Utilities menu.

I have 23 inch Apple HD Display. Will this work with my MacBook Pro? How shall I connect it?

yarova818,
there were two different 23-inch Apple Cinema HD displays made. The first one was made between 2002 and 2004, and has an ADC connector. The second one was made between 2004 and 2008, and has a DVI-D connector.
If you have the display with an ADC connector, then according to this Apple page, your display will work with your MacBook Pro if it’s a 13-inch or 15-inch model. If you have a first-generation MacBook Pro, you’d need an Apple DVI to ADC Adapter (or equivalent) to connect them. If you have a Unibody or Retina MacBook Pro, then you’d also need a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter (or equivalent) to complete the connection. A Retina model would also have the option of using a third-party HDMI to DVI-D adapter to complete the connection with the DVI to ADC adapter.
If you have the display with a DVI-D connector, then if you have a first-generation MacBook Pro, you should be able to plug it in directly. If you have a Unibody or Retina MacBook Pro, then the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter would let you make the connection. Again, Retina models also would have the option of using a third-party HDMI to DVI-D adapter.

• Mac Mini & al browsers and apple alias/discussions

I tried to sign up for mac mini discussions on my mac mini that is having problems. It would not let me sign up and kept telling me that my alias was wrong. So I signed up on my lap top , but the mini still doesn't see me as a user in these discussions. Also everytime I order something through Safari, the last item is the only one in the e-cart. It will not keep track of all the items and the amount $ ordered. Am wondering if I have a problem with other software, as Safari worked fine last month and probably two weeks ago. What do yiu think I should do to get Safari, or any other browser, to work again? Is it the Mac Mini?
Thank you for your help.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Lots of memory

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
You might want to clear your Safari cache (click Safari and empty cache).
If that doesn't help, then reset Safari (click Safari and reset safari).
If that doesn't help, quit Safari, and delete com.apple.safari.plist in your library/preferences. Sometimes this file becomes corrupt and can cause odd behaviours. Deleting this file will delete any Safari preferences you've previously defined.
If still having problems, consider Firefox, which is what I use. You can get it at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ or Opera is another browser which can be found at http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?platform=mac . Or you can try the new Safari 3 beta, which is at http://www.apple.com/safari/

• Mini (early 2009) and Verizon Westell wireless router 326A

Mini will not connect to Westell DSL by ethernet or wireless, it does however "see" the router both wired & wireless. Modem will connect to G4 (10.4...) or Windows box.
Mini will connect both ways with a Westell 6100 F modem (1 ethernet slot) and also subsequently through an Apple airport or Linksys wireless.
I have connected through two other DSL locations but not through the Westell 326A at my home.

Tried changing back to broadcast. Still no luck. When selecting automatic for most setting, it cannot find an IP address.  When I manually select and IP address and others, the PS 3 finds an IP address but does not get any further, I keep getting the DNS error (80710102). I've tried about 4 or 5 different primary and secondary DNS addresses, but it keeps coming back to the same DNS error.  I can only think that I am not putting in the correct DNS servers, but not sure what else to try.

• We just set up an apple airport wireless router but i can't print from iPad to hp officejet all in one J4680.  the iPad is connected to  the network as well as the printer, but it doesn't print

How can I get my ipad to print to HP J4680 through apples airport wireless router

Hello ddoonis,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:
AirPrint Basics
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
If you are unable to print, or if you see the message "No AirPrint Printers Found"
Verify that the printer:
Has power and is turned on. If it has power, turn the printer off and then on again to see if that resolves the issue.
Is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the iOS device.
Has the latest firmware version installed.
Has paper with enough ink or toner installed.
Is free of any errors displayed on the printer's control panel.
Have a nice day,
Mario

• Mac mini won't connect to my wireless router!

I just bought my mac mini server then connected it to wifi, then after 2 weeks I had to go abroad for a week so I just turned off the switch connecting to my mac, without switching off my mac mini server. then when I get back home my mac mini won't connect to my wifi. I tried everything from manually setting up IP and DHCP nothing works. What happened?
thanks for help,
Jakarta

I didn't reset the machine/router itself because 2 of my computer is still connected to wifi-and working perfectly, but the mac mini server cannot connect to wifi.
what I did was to set up the "networking utilities"-having said that, what I did was to connect all over again to wifi, this did not work. I did tried to change from DHCP to manually set up IP, neither of these didn't work.
I'm now stucked!

• Airport, Airport Express, iPhone & PS3 wireless network will this work?

Hi I need help with the above,
I've got an iMac 15" G4 800Mhz, it is fitted with a standard airport card, the G4 is connected to the internet via ethernet to a Zyxel P-600 Series ADSL modem. I have also been streaming itunes (using airtunes) to a seperate hi-fi amp in another room using an Airport Express Base Station, THIS ALL WORKS.
I have since bought an iPhone and a Playstaion3 (PS3) and want this all to work together but does not. It would seem that the Airport Express Base Station is the dominant part of this network and I want to change this priority. No matter how far I delve I cannot find the answer. Basically I want the following setup:
iMac G4 (with Airport Card) that is connected to the internet via ethernet to be the 'main Base Station' (not the Airport Express as is currently), I then want to continue streaming Airtunes to the Airport Express and also use this device as a booster for the wireless network. The reason for the new wireless setup is to enable the iPhone to connect to the Internet (the iphone currently sees the network but cannot connect to the internet because the Airport Express is NOT connected to the ADSL Modem), I also want the PS3 to connect to this network.
Am I asking too much of the Airport Card (The one in the G4)? or should I simply buy the new Airport Extreme Base Station and start again?
Any help would really be appreciated, Paul

sorry if i sound stupid but does that mean that if i'm using the AX to stream music (using Airtunes) I cannot simultaneously use it as a wi-fi extender?
That situation is possible.
If so can I set up the AX to just stream music and then use an Airport Extreme Base Station hard wired to the ADSL Modem and the iMAc and connect the iPhone and PS3 to the internet via the AEBS wi-fi network. Essentially creating one wi-fi network for iPhone/ PS3 wireless connection and a seperate Airtunes network for wireless music streaming, or am I just dreaming, cheers for your help.
Sure you can do that. But then you will have to decide if you want to stream music OR you want to be on the internet. Your computers can't connect to both at the same time.
You probably want to do the above, but configure your AX to join the wireless network provided by the AEBS. Then you will only have a single wireless network and you can stream music, print, and surf the internet all at the same time.

• Wireless card, will this work? What about extender antenna?

I found this on eBay, will it work on a Lombard, or Wallstreet, using OS9? Anybody using one?

Anybody use one of those extender antennas? Which ones would work?
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

sludgedragon,
The WiFi PC cards using the Orinoco chipset is the same chipset used in the original AirPort card (802.11b). According to Apple, if you are running OS 9.2.2, you can install AirPort 2.0.4 and have full compatibility.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120120
However, I cannot say the card you referenced from Enterasys with added features and updated firmware will still work with Apple's AirPort software. The ad does say it comes with a CD containing software for all OSes and also various versions of firmware.
It should work just fine on a Wallstreet or Lombard. There is also iOXperts wireless driver which supports it and many other cards.

• Time capsule wireless router will not work

I have a Time Capsule that I use as a wireless router in my condo.  Our internet company was recently purchased by another company, and after the transition, I am not able to connect to internet wirelessly.  My condo is wired with active ethernet ports.  If I plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer, I am able to log in to the ISP's main page and connect to the internet without any problems.  However, if I plug my ethernet cable into the Time Capsule as I did before, I cannot connect.  Before the company bought the old company, I didn't have any issues.  I've called their Tech Support 3 different times about this and they tell me they don't provide support for my wireless routers because there are so many different types.  They suggested resetting the router password, but I'm not completely sure how to do that.  Is that different than my airport password?
I should also note, that if I pull up System Preferences and to the "assist me" feature under the Network option, it tells me that I'm connected.
Any help you can provide would be fantastic!  I'm at my wits end with this issue, as I connect a number of devices to my Time Capsule wirelessly.
Regards,
Jake

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

• Can I have 2 Mac OS X partitions and 1 XP partition?  Will Parallels work?

I need XP and of course 10.5.5 that came with my system. (They are both running fine now with Parallels)
I WANT to also install an older version of 10.x so I can run OS 9 and all my old Apps (=games!).
I gave up on emulators.
Anyone else addicted enough to try this?
Thanks

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
I need XP and of course 10.5.5 that came with my system. (They are both running fine now with Parallels)
I WANT to also install an older version of 10.x so I can run OS 9 and all my old Apps (=games!).
Since your MacBook came with OSX 10.5 Leopard you can't install an older OSX version like 10.4 Tiger 10.3 Panther.
These versions simply lack the needed support for your MacBook.
Also OS 9 does not run on Intel-based Macs without an emulator like SheepShaver.
I gave up on emulators.
Anyone else addicted enough to try this?
Thanks
You're welcome anytime.

• Airport/No Computer - Will This work?

I'm planning a two-week stay in Paris and would like to have wifi access in my hotel room, but my hotel only has a wired internet connection. Can I bring along my Airport basestation, rent (or borrow) a PC, establish an internet connection with Airport, connect my iPhone to this wifii network, return the PC, and then enjoy wifii access on my iPhone for the rest of my stay?

You need to ask the hotel IT staff several questions about their guest network.
1.) Can a guest login/connect to the network ONE time and stay connected for two weeks? Or, does their system require you to login/connect again each day or each time a connected device is turned on/off?
2.) Does the login/connect page use any plugins - Flash, for example. Third party plugins are not supported on the iPhone. If the login/connect page uses only standard HTML, you may be able to connect with the iPhone and might not need the extra pc. (Of course, you will not be able to configure the Airport from the iPhone; you will need to have it all set up before you leave home.)
3.) Does their network allow multiple MAC addresses to be connected to the single Ethernet cable? The Airport will have a MAC address, the borrowed PC will have a MAC address, and the iPhone has its own MAC address. If the hotel network is wide open, that will not matter. If the hotel network identifies devices by MAC address limits access to "approved" MAC addresses, you may have a more difficult time getting connected and staying connected.
PLEASE be sure to come back to this forum after your trip and tell what worked and what did not!
