  • Mac Mini has Distorted audio over HDMI

My brand new mid-2010 Mac Mini has distorted audio over HDMI. Ideas? Tried multiple connections, devices, but the Mini's audio flattens and distorts high pitch sounds. Really distracting, makes movie watching impossible. Thinking about returning it.

Update: After a bunch of playing around, it appears that I do, in fact, have audio output. What is missing are the up and down volume chirps. I can do without that.
Now, anyone know how to fix the Logitec webcam's input volume...?

  • Mac Mini sound continually turning down

My mac mini sound is continually turning down. When I hit the sound up button, the sound goes up for a millisecond and then goes back down. It is really annoying because the sound up icon is in the middle of my screen. This problem has been occurring on and off for a week now.

Ok I found out how to fix it. I deleted my audio cache and it hasn't done it again.

  • Strange mac mini sound issue with HDMI cable

I connected my mac mini to my Panasonic 44 inch HDTV with a DVI to HDMI adapter. I didin't get sound through the cable like i expected. Then I connected a 3mm to RCA jacks adapter to the analog HDMI port on the TV and still no sound. Strangely, when i switched resolutions from 1920 X 1080 to 1200 X 720 the sound started working through the audio ports. It works on every resolution except 1920 X 1080. Any ideas why this is so? Or how to fix it?

First off, the DVI standard makes no provision for carrying sound. That is why you didn't hear any sound when making a DVI-to-HDMI connection from your mini to your TV through the adapter. I am assuming there must be a setting on your TV that is snuffing the sound input from the mini rather than the mini not outputing sound at 1920x1080. This would be easy to prove. Just pull the audio minijack connector from the mini's sound out and I'm guessing you will hear sound coming from the mini's speaker.
Is it possible that, on your TV set, you have associated 1920x1080 with an expectation of HDMI input? Maybe the TV is expecting to find digital audio over the HDMI input and somehow that association is only with that one resolution. Then when you drop resolutions it is looking for sound over the analog port instead of over the HDMI port. I'm just guessing here, but it's something you can check.

  • Mac mini sound

About two weeks ago I noticed that no sound is coming from my Mac Mini.  When I plug in a set of headphones, the sound is fine and streaming to my Apple Tv; again fine.  I have read the forums, I have done a 'clean install' of ML to no avail.  Before i trapse down to my nearest Apple Store (35 miles!) anything else I could do?

    UPDATE:
Took the Mac Mini to the local Apple Store.  The first thing they did was a Apple Hardware Test.  I hada nagging feeling that I should have done this myself but I was too lazy!
Anyway, the HWT came back with all systems ok.  And the sound was now working!
Anyway, I told the friendly Apple guy (my wife at this point was drooling at his good looks!) that my system was slow with regularly 'spinning beach balls' and Spotlight indexing.  My system is only 6 months old!
Without hesitation, he said this should not be the case and recommended a hard drive replacement...under warranty.
3 days later I get an e-mail stating my machine is ready and here I am, writing this on my healthy Mac Mini!
    So...conclusion...do a Apple Hardware Test!

  • Mac Mini Sound problem

    Hi all,
i have a mac mini early 2009, the sound dont work and i run apple hardware test and show me following error  4mot/1/40000002 master-0
Any ideas to solve it or explaint what happen?
    Thanks for the help

The error points to an error with a fan? Is the Mac mini still under warranty? Bring it to an Apple Service point would be the best option.

  • Mac mini sound output

new 2014 mac mini -> two monitors setup -> upon "awake", sound output from monitor choice disappear.  Only to restart to have those output appeared again.  any solution?

It depends on the sound input socket on the LCD. On the mini end, it's a standard stereo mini jack. If the LCD has the same, small, circular socket marked audio in, then a standard stereo mini jack to stereo mini jack cable will be what you need. On the other hand, if the LCD has two sockets marked audio in, one red and one white, then you need a stereo mini jack to twin RCA/phono cable.

  • My Mac mini sound problem

    Hi!
i put my mac mini in the living room and connect it to my amplifier, it is working fine until my daughter use some bluetooth earphone and now when I go into the System preference --> Sound --> input/output All I see is the bluetooth device, but no buildin speaker.
How should I do to bring it back ?
    (it's a mac mini I bought for 10 month, installed with 10.6.1)

    Hi jameshsi
Go to: Applications > Utilities > open Audio MIDI Setup and select Built-in Output.
If that does't work go to: System Preferences > Bluetooth and uncheck the ON box.
Then if that still doesn't work, then ask the Bluetooth expert (your daughter) to undo the settings and return control of the Audio system to you.

  • Mac mini sound problems

I can barely hear sound on you tube videos with my mac mini. Sound system is on highest. Sound on some videos on Facebook site and on other sites sound fine. What could be the problem?

Sounds like a problem with those specific videos.

  • Mac Mini Sound Issue under OS X when Boot Camp is installed

I've noticed a strange issue on my Intel Mac Mini.
Fresh install of Mac OS X 10.4.6 or higher - sound volume is normal and stays at the previously set level after a power off, power on, or just a restart.
If I take the same fresh install and install Boot Camp (confirmed on version 1.2 and 1.3 both) - and I raise the volume and restart or shut down / power back on - the volume is automatically reset to 50% when I log back into Mac OS X.
The volume problem doesn't appear to affect Windows or Linux at all, only OS X itself.
Once Boot Camp is removed, the problem goes away.
This has happened after multiple test re-installs - including with a fresh install of 10.4.x updated to 10.4.10.
    Has anyone else noticed this?

sorry for digging up an old thread, but what was the problem?

  • 2010 Mac Mini sound skipping

Have a 2010 Mac Mini Server 4 GB RAM 2.66 Ghz running OSX Server 10.6.7.
Ever since I purchased in February 2011, the machine has had skipping audio regardless of the source - You Tube or other internet streaming, local quick time movie playback, i-tunes, you name it - it ihas audio skipping and stuttering.
I also have two 2nd Gen Apple TV's that run via Home Share from this Mac Mini.  There are no audio problems when the Apple TV's playback movies or music.  Perfect playback.
My Mac Mini is connected to my LCD TV directly via HDMI.  Have tried various different resolutions. Is this a driver problem with the Mac Mini, an interface problem with the HDMI, or what?  It is a very annoying problem that ruins the Mac experience for a family that has just cast off windows completely to go Mac!
    Please help!
Wondering if this could be a PAL/NTSC problem.  I am an American living in Sweden and purchased the Mac Mini in the US while on vacation.  The PAL 50 Mhz setting is greyed out in the display preferences.  Could this be a part of the culprit?

    Hey David,
My issue was resolved by ensuring that I was using a PAL resolution and frequency (720p @ 50 Hz or 1080p @ 50 Hz) for my PAL TV. Anything else causes audio stuttering through my HDMI cable.
Don't ask me why. Try this on your setup by using only the one of your TV's native resolutions and frequencies (Should say NTSC Television on every native TV resolution if you are in the US, PAL Television in Europe). If you do have an NTSC TV, then you might be able to use all of the 60 Hz frequency resolutions without HDMI audio out problems, but I wouldn't count on it.
From what I've researched on the issue, it is only TV's that have this problem, and it is a strange one, as it is actually a  display setting problem with an audio error symptom.

  • Apple TV has no sound when mirroring from Mac mini, sound works when mirroring from iPad and iPhone

When I mirror from Mac mini to Apple TV there's no audio from Apple TV to my av amp,it works fine from iPhone and iPad,is there something I need to do in the airplay settings?

Here's what finally solved my issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24436903#24436903
    From this Apple Community User:
    https://discussions.apple.com/people/Winston%20Churchill
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)
Apparently there is an issue if you push the Apple Remote before you set your computer to mirror.  Whatever I did, it had locked it in that state.  Once I stopped mirroring, then went onto the TV screen and restarted the Apple TV (#1 above) it then allowed me to choose mirroring on my Mac and the audio automatically switched from the computer to the TV (making the computer now mute), BTW the volume needs to be maxed on the computer as that will transmit to the TV if your volume is low on the computer.  Then you can raise or lower it the way you want on your TV.
    Yay!
    Hope this helps others.....

  • Mac Mini sound goes to zero on its own.

I have had my mini since 2009. This issue has happened intermittantly since I got it but has happened several times in the last while. The sound output goes to zero. On it's own. I go into system preferences to sound and slide the bar back to my desired level and all is ducky until it happens again. I suppose I should have spoken to Apple about this when Applecare was still in play but it did not happen much. Silly me. Any ideas about the cause? I am guessing this is mobo related and a cure will be costly. If I go that route.
I run a line out of the headphone jack that splits to my amp and a set of headphones.

Well, it was just a shot at a possibilility.
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, trash these files...
