Mac Mini Stopped Loading Webpages

Heres the deal:
I have a late 2012 mac mini. OS X Yosemite. 10.10.1  I've had it connected to the same Comcast wireless modem for several months without issue. The past couple days the mini stopped loading webpages. It's like the internet is really slow. Sometimes it will load a page after several minutes. The internet/network works perfectly fine all all other devices in the house. Speed tests at 15Mb/s download on my phone. But heres the weird part, my Mac Mini works well when I wirelessly tether my phone's LTE to the computer, it loads webpages just fine. I've tried Chrome and Safari. I tried unplugging all the USB/Firewire cables from the back. I can't turn bluetooth off because of my mouse and keyboard.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dean

Hold down the option key and select the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar. What values are shown for the following?
          PHY Mode
          Channel
          Security
          Signal/Noise or RSSI
          Transmit Rate
Please do not post the BSSID, as that information is private.
Now hold down the option key again and select
           ▹ System Information... ▹ Network ▹ Wi-Fi
Compare the two-letter Country Code with the ISO code for your country. Does it match? The code X0 means that the country couldn't be determined. The code X3 means South America, not otherwise specified.

  • Mac mini stopped 'seeing' airport express

Yesterday my mac mini stopped being able to sustain a connection to my wireless network (cable modem connected to Airport Express base station). All the other computers on the network are still working fine; the mini will connect for a bit (at weaker strength than it used to) and after a short time - could be seconds, could be 5 or so minutes - disconnects. Once the mini has lost connectivity it cannot even 'see' the presence of the airport express. All the other computers in the house (both dells) still connect just fine. I'm therefore assuming that the problem lies in the mini's airport card (specs listed in my profile, and yes, the System Profiler still does 'see' the card).
Just to be thorough, I've tried the following:
    1) plugging the cable modem directly into the mini works - but then, of course, no one else gets internet access.
    2) resetting everything - cable modem, airport express, network settings on mini - followed by a restart does not help the computer stay connected. Maybe I get 5 minutes as opposed to one.
    So here're my questions:
    1) Is it possible to have the airport card replaced in a mini?
    2) Would it be a better option (financially, aggravation, likelihood of recurrence) to get an airport extreme base station instead? Then I could hardwire the mini to the network and use wireless for the other computers (is that correct?).
    3) Is there something here I'm overlooking that I should consider?
    THANKS so much!

    1) Is it possible to have the airport card replaced in a mini?
Yes. It's a discrete component that can be removed and replaced if faulty, as can the antenna which is also a possible culprit. Just as possible too is that the antenna is not firmly connected, which can also be remedied by servicing.
    2) Would it be a better option (financially, aggravation, likelihood of recurrence) to get an airport extreme base station instead? Then I could hardwire the mini to the network and use wireless for the other computers (is that correct?).
It would always be a better proposition to hardwire a system to a network rather than use wifi - not only for reliable connectivity but also for throughput. I'm not sure that I would consider an airport base station however, since there are a number of other wifi routers available at typically lower cost and which are every bit as compatible if you were to decide to go that route. I use a Belkin at home, which at $40 is inexpensive, yet provides a more reliable signal than my airport extreme base station did.
    3) Is there something here I'm overlooking that I should consider?
Interference. While it's easy to assume that there must be a problem with the mini since your other computers don't have the same problem, that isn't the only conclusion. The mini's great weakness in wifi use is that the antenna is partially screened by the system's casing and as a result, in the most ideal of circumstances it will typically give lower signal strength and poorer signal quality than you'd get with almost any other system. That isn't a problem in most situations, but it does mean that if there is a reduction of signal transmitted (and the Airport Express is pretty low level transmission power even in normal wifi terms) or a source of interference in the area, the mini's wifi connectivity will suffer more readily and notably than almost anything else.
You can look for indications of this sort of issue with a good analytical utility such as AP Grapher (http://www.chimoosoft.com/apgrapher.html) which can show you not just the simple matter of signal strength, but also what other factors may be playing a part, such as noise. That might give some additional clues.

  • IPhone using Mac Mini's internet connection sharing, stops loading webpages

Bought an iPhone 1 hour ago.
I'm sharing my internet connection to my iBook and MacBook from my Mac Mini. Works fine.
    Can't connect using the iPhone.
It will detect the network, it will show full network reception, but it will only load webpages for the first 10 seconds and then stops.
Tried removing the password, fixing a channel, resetting the iPhone (full reset), the "forget this network" trick, nothing worked.
It will load web pages in the first 10 seconds of detecting my open network. Its highly frustrating...
Any suggestions? Maybe using the restore option from iTunes instead of the reset ones from iPhone? Will this try to reinstall the latest firmware?

Very similar case here -- I bought an iPhone just yesterday, set it up with internet sharing on my Mac Mini, and am getting random (but frequent) failures connecting via wifi. Small web pages can get through sometimes, large (or complex) web pages almost always hang during loading, e-mail pretty much never works.
However, using "edge" works just fine.
I've nosed around these forums a bit (and googled for this problem a bit), and it does seem like there are a number of users having this sort of trouble. However, some folks with this problem have noted that they can run wifi just fine at other hotspots. (I haven't taken my phone to another hotspot yet, maybe I'll try tomorrow...) And I've shared my internet connection to other PCs from my Mini successfully before. So, in my opinion, this problem does not appear to be an actual hardware fault in either the iPhone or the Mac Mini, but rather some disagreement between the settings chosen on both sides; my guess is that this'll take a driver modification in either or both to fix, rather than a replacement of either the iPhone or the Mini.
    Just my current guess, though.

  • Safari stops loading webpages

I have 2 Macbooks on my network with identical settings and one works fine when surfing with Safari the other keeps stopping on webpages. I have reset permissions, emptied cache, all the things suggested. I found that Pinging to my Airport extreme shows 100% packet loss not all the time. By keep on pinging I have found it works now and again and then just drops the speed.... Anybody any Ideas?
    Cheers, Martin

The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 / )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Fx 31 for Mac suddenly stopped loading images does anyone have a solution to this.

In the middle of the day Fx stopped loading images for buttons, pictures on websites etc. I can use other browsers on my Mac and they work fine. I have reset Fx and tried with no add-ons installed. I have even removed and reinstalled. No change.

You have the QuickJava 2.0.4 extension installed and this extension allows to toggle the image setting as well.

  • Mac OS stops loading after the Spotlight icon is displayed - what can I do?

    Hello guys,
This problem is intermittent but extremely annoying. The issue I have is that when I login on my Macbook, occasionally it will load up Spotlight and no further progress will be made - I'll get the cartwheel and even after 30 minutes nothing has changed. I have to forcibly restart my Macbook once, or even twice, in order to fix this problem, when the problem does crop up. This happened to me quite a while ago on almost a daily basis; I went on here for some help, of which I got none, and decided to reinstall my OS. The reinstall went smoothly and I never had to problem again, until last night.
Last night I installed the latest Safari update (it's a rather good update, everything in Safari is slightly faster) and the latest Mac OS Security update (I don't know what it was specifically and I have no idea how I would find out). I was using my Macbook on battery, as I was in my living room at the time, and installed the update. (Yes, I know, I deserve a slap on the wrist for installing an update whilst on battery, but I had so much juice left it didn't seem an issue) As soon as the update had been installed, the computer had been restarted and I logged in - this ugly problem reared it's head again! I forcibly restarted my Macbook twice in a row, to no avail. I left it overnight and now it's working fine again.
So, my question is: How can I prevent this 'bug' from happening and are there any ways of stopping it when it occurs?
I'd really like some help on this issue because I do not want to cause my Macbook any further damage by forcibly restarting my Macbook whenever I have this problem.
    Jeremy Reid

You describe a thing you should solve immediately, as your system is very unstable. I would run the following apps:
    1. disk Utility for repairing permissions;
    2. Onyx for cleaning caches and other optimizations 9read carefully what you can do without any danger) – Onyx is a powerful app, which digs deep into the system.
As always, such operations should be preceded by backup; I have been using Martin Jahn’s iBackup (grapefruit.ch), but you may use any other app suitable.
If this does not solve your problem, make a clean install (after backup, of course), i.e. erase and install. If, after this radical solution, your problem persists, I think your disk is damaged and should be replaced. The spinning wheel of death you describe may be the token you have a hardware issue (I cannot be sure, you are the only who can identify that step by step). If your mac is still within the warranty period, go to the closes service and check it. If not, try to identify the issue, you must do that anyway, as the behavior is not normal.

  • New mac air wont load webpage

Just purchased a new mac book air 13", booted up and the machine will not load webapge. Connected to the internet and seeing IP, but just freezes while trying to load a page. Tried a few suggestions based off forum, but still no luck. Suggestions? Crazy that a brand new machine can't complete the simplest task.

Power off the router. Wait awhile. Power it back on. Wait until all the lights are lit up properly.
    It will take a while.
    Restart the computer.

  • Mac Mini turns on, progress bar loads slowly on the apple screen, then it just turns off. What's happening?

So the power went out and my mac mini came on when the power came back on and as it was loading the power went off again. It didn't come on for a while but when it did the mac mini would load much slower than usual on the apple screen then the progress bar would get stuck at less than 50% before the mac mini would just switch off. It doesn't restart or anything, it just turns off. Go to turn it back on again, same happens, turns off. Try to boot it up in safe-mode, loads slowly then just turns off.
    Please help!

You can boot the problem Mac to Recovery like you did before. Attached the external HD and then install Yosemite to the external HD. That will erase the external HD and the external HD will have to be formatted in Mac format.
The Recovery link in my previous reply covered that.
If necessary, once installed on the external HD, boot while holding the Option  key. Choose to boot from the external HD. Once booted up use Finder to copy importent files the external HD.
I would also backup those importent file to another device/media too.
    Then replace the failed HD.
Then you can clone the external HD to the new HD

Note that the Free SuperDuper does not clone the recovery partition to the new drive but the paid Carbon Copy Cloner does.
