Mac mini stopped 'seeing' airport express

Yesterday my mac mini stopped being able to sustain a connection to my wireless network (cable modem connected to Airport Express base station). All the other computers on the network are still working fine; the mini will connect for a bit (at weaker strength than it used to) and after a short time - could be seconds, could be 5 or so minutes - disconnects. Once the mini has lost connectivity it cannot even 'see' the presence of the airport express. All the other computers in the house (both dells) still connect just fine. I'm therefore assuming that the problem lies in the mini's airport card (specs listed in my profile, and yes, the System Profiler still does 'see' the card).
Just to be thorough, I've tried the following:
1) plugging the cable modem directly into the mini works - but then, of course, no one else gets internet access.
2) resetting everything - cable modem, airport express, network settings on mini - followed by a restart does not help the computer stay connected. Maybe I get 5 minutes as opposed to one.
So here're my questions:
1) Is it possible to have the airport card replaced in a mini?
2) Would it be a better option (financially, aggravation, likelihood of recurrence) to get an airport extreme base station instead? Then I could hardwire the mini to the network and use wireless for the other computers (is that correct?).
3) Is there something here I'm overlooking that I should consider?
THANKS so much!

1) Is it possible to have the airport card replaced in a mini?
Yes. It's a discrete component that can be removed and replaced if faulty, as can the antenna which is also a possible culprit. Just as possible too is that the antenna is not firmly connected, which can also be remedied by servicing.
2) Would it be a better option (financially, aggravation, likelihood of recurrence) to get an airport extreme base station instead? Then I could hardwire the mini to the network and use wireless for the other computers (is that correct?).
It would always be a better proposition to hardwire a system to a network rather than use wifi - not only for reliable connectivity but also for throughput. I'm not sure that I would consider an airport base station however, since there are a number of other wifi routers available at typically lower cost and which are every bit as compatible if you were to decide to go that route. I use a Belkin at home, which at $40 is inexpensive, yet provides a more reliable signal than my airport extreme base station did.
3) Is there something here I'm overlooking that I should consider?
Interference. While it's easy to assume that there must be a problem with the mini since your other computers don't have the same problem, that isn't the only conclusion. The mini's great weakness in wifi use is that the antenna is partially screened by the system's casing and as a result, in the most ideal of circumstances it will typically give lower signal strength and poorer signal quality than you'd get with almost any other system. That isn't a problem in most situations, but it does mean that if there is a reduction of signal transmitted (and the Airport Express is pretty low level transmission power even in normal wifi terms) or a source of interference in the area, the mini's wifi connectivity will suffer more readily and notably than almost anything else.
You can look for indications of this sort of issue with a good analytical utility such as AP Grapher (http://www.chimoosoft.com/apgrapher.html) which can show you not just the simple matter of signal strength, but also what other factors may be playing a part, such as noise. That might give some additional clues.

  • Mac mini wont see airport express

I've been using my airport express to stream music through my stero (and that is ALL...  NOTHING FANCY! :|   )  I can no longer see the AirPort Express from the mac Mini.
I can plug the mini into the AirPort (using an ethernet cable) and see it using the AirPort Utility (v5) with no problem.  I can see that it is configured properly, the firmware is up to date, and it is connected to my home WiFi.  While conneced via cable, I can even stream the music with no problem.
As soon as I disconnect the cable, it's gone.  I can see it from my iPhone, and laptop, but not from my Mini.
Mini is running OS X  V10.6.8
    AirPort is model  A1264
    Any Suggestions?

Unless your HP printer is an AirPrint-ready device, just connecting it to the USB port of the AirPort Express base station will not make it so.
On the other hand, connecting a non-AirPrint printer to the base station's USB port it can be shared out by the base station's print server. Please see the following Apple Support article for details.

Maybe you are looking to re-purpose this equipment versus getting rid of it if so, the best thing to do is search the internet for tutorials.  And I say this because it's what I would do, there are a lot of tutorials online.    Hope you can find good use for them.  Worse case scenario if you can't find something right now, package them very nicely and when you come across something unbox and enjoy.  I've re-purposed a mac color classic and LOVE IT!!

  • Can't See Airport Express on my Wireless N/work

I have a D-Link DSL G604t router, and have spent hours trying to get it to "see" AE - no joy. I have added the MAC Address to the enabled access list but still nothing - everytime I scan for it, it cannot be found. My Compaq l/top connects no problem to the network, and I cannot find any answers in the manual. Only trying to send itunes to my hifi - don't need to share connections or printers.

    Hi:
I had a similar problem with a DLink DI-624 wireless router and AirPort Express afew months ago. Here is what you can do.
As an intermediate step, which is undocumented but I found necessary, connect your Airport Express to the wireless router via an Ethernet cable. After the wired connection, your router will definitely see AirPort Express. Then you can go through the normal network registration process. Once this is complete, you can then power off Airport Express and disconnect it from the router and then place it where you originally intended. Once the solid green light comes on (30-60 seconds), you should be able to access AirPort Express the way it was intended, in a wireless manner.
Again, this worked for me after hours of unsuccessful struggling with the installation process as described in the Apple documentation. I hope this helps.

  • ITunes 10 does not see Airport Express because port 3689 is unavailable

I never had problems with iTunes 9 and Airport Express, but since iTunes 10 the following problem occurs regularly: iTunes starts, but does not "see" Airport Express (AE) as an external speaker. Sometimes it also loses connection after Windows hibernate mode, but that might be another issue.
What I found out is that it is NOT a firewall issue, otherwise it would not work once in a while. What I saw, though, is that TCP port 3689 is sometimes stolen by other apps like Mozilla Thunderbird (TB). I.e. if Thunderbird is started BEFORE iTunes, it might use 3689 as a listening socket. iTunes then cannot see AE until I shut down TB and restart iTunes. This is very annoying and I only found out after many weeks when watching TCP live connections in my personal firewall software.
    Two questions arise:
    1) If listening port 3689 is unavailable, why does iTunes not show any error message? There is absolutely no indication as to why it does not find the external AE loudspeaker. BTW, the AE config programm can connect to the hardware easily.
    2) Even if port 3689 is blocked by another application, Airfoil for Windows works flawlessly with my AE. I can even tunnel iTunes through Airfoil and then listen to music in my living room, even though iTunes does not see AE. Why can a 3rd party program do something which iTunes can't?
There must be a way to smarten up iTunes and fix this annoying bug.

  • Mac Min cannot see PC with either Airport Express on ethernet connections

I am trying to network a Mac Mini, G4 Power Book, a PC laptop and PC desktop so far I can get the Mini to see the G4 and PC laptop but not the PC desktop. I have an Airport express and all but the PC desktop work OK with it. The PC desktop can see the Airport, which I have called MitchBVI, but when I try and connect to it nothing happens. The wireless card in the PC is a Linksys WMP5G. I have not enabled security yet as I wanted to get the whole network operating first.
I have tried linking the Mini to the PC with an Ethernet cable and if I do that the PC can see the Mini but not the other way round.
The fact that the PC laptop and the Mini can see each other suggest to me I have the correct permissions set on the Mini. As the PC desktop can see the Airport Express I assume that the Linksys card is working OK. As the PC desktop can see the Mac when the Ethernet cable is connected it would seem whatever permissions are needed on the desktop are set correctly.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mitch

Thanks I had found your site and changed the MSHOME and WORKGROUP to a diffferent name MITCH that is how I got it working in part. My Powerbook can see the Mac Mini and so can the PC. The former through a wireless connection the later by ethernet. I can ping the IP address of the PC from the mac mini but cannot make the connection.
For a while on the PC i actually had a wireless connection but could not access the net with it and it dropped out again. Maybe having an ethernet and wireless connection is the problemalthough with the wireless disabled that has not helped.
I had a spare Linksys card and tried replacing it but that did not help. As I said in my first post other PC laptop works fine.

  • Cannot see Airport Express when connected to Cisco corporate wireless - used to work, stopped cooperating recently

I have had an Airport Express at my office for several years to stream iTunes. It has worked fine, including through an upgrade to a new Cisco wireless network. Then it just stopped. I have reset, and then purchased a new AE with updated firmware. I have a green light, and when I connect via an ethernet cable I am getting all green lights, and can see that I have a valid IP address on the network, the router address is correct and the DNS servers appear to be correct. I still cannot see the AE on any Apple device connected to the wireless network....... any ideas? Is this connected to any recent IOS updates? Thanks for any insights......

  • Can't see AirPort Express in second location

I have a new AirPort Express that works great at home with my MacBook Pro (extends network from Linksys wireless router, plays iTunes, connects to printer - even in Parallels / WinXP!). I saved this profile as "home".
I then simply unplugged it and took it to a friend's house thinking I could plug it in there and set up a 2nd profile, "friends", that does the exact same thing. Problem is I can't see it at the 2nd location, wirelessly or plugged in directly to the router or the computer via ethernet. When I bring it home again, it's still working just fine.
What else do I need to do to have it set up to work in two locations?
    Thanks in advance.
MacBook Pro, Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    There are two options:
    1. Create the second profile while on your own network. When you get ready to move the Express, select the profile before disconnecting it from the network.
    2. Perform a hard reset on the Express and reconfigure it once you get to your friend's house. If you've already created the profile, you can select the profile after the reset.

  • MacBook can't see Airport Express when waking from sleep

    Hi,
I have an airport express unit specifically for using with air tunes. I am find that every time my macbook wakes from sleep although it reconnects to my wireless network ok it (and therefore itunes) can't see the AX anymore.
Rebooting the AX unit fixes the problem and i can again stream from itunes but i dont want to have to reboot the AX each time beacuse my MacBook goes in and out of sleep 5+ times a day as i move it around the house.
I am not having any issue with audio drop out or stuttering as mentioned by others, nor does the ax stop working once streaming has begun.
    My Setup is:
    MacBook OSX 10.4.11
    Airport Express (latest firmware)
BeBox wireless router (rebranded speedtouch) running WPA2 security
Any suggestions on what i can do to stop this recurring?

I've recently developed a similar problem. When my PowerBook G4 wakes from sleep it can no longer see the Airport Express. It still connects to the Internet, and the AX continues to shine a steady green light. I've written an Automator script that restarts the router, and once it reboots the AX shows up again in iTunes or the AirPort utility.
Customer service for my router claims this is an issue with the AX. Anyone have any ideas?
    Computer: PowerBook G4, 10.5.2
Wireless network: TrendNet TEW-432 G router, WPA, DHCP, SSID broadcast off, no MAC filter, Airport Express set up to join network (not extend).
    Thanks,

  • Can't see Airport Express

    Hi everyone,
I have been connecting both my Cube and my MBP to the internet via an Airport Express successfully for over a month now.
Today I allowed Software Update to download and install the following to my MBP:
    2007-03-24 13:18:10 +1100: Installed "Pages Update" (2.0.2)
    2007-03-24 13:18:14 +1100: Installed "Keynote Update" (3.0.2)
    2007-03-24 13:18:34 +1100: Installed "QuickTime" (7.1.5)
    2007-03-24 13:18:37 +1100: Installed "AirPort Extreme Update 2007-002" (1.0)
    2007-03-24 13:19:34 +1100: Installed "iPhoto Update" (6.0.6)
During the download process, I suffered a power outage and my Airport Express connection was lost. Software Update therefore couldn't download the other updates available (iTunes 7.1.1 and OSX 10.4.9) and so I was forced to restart with only the above updates installed.
However upon restart, my Airport Express network was not visible from the MBP. My Cube can see and connect to the AExpress network just fine.
My MBP can also detect a neighbour's wireless hifi network, but not my own AExpress. And I can also connect my MBP successfully to my router via ethernet cable.
I don't believe the power failure would be the cause, as it was only the download process and not the update process that was interrupted - but i could be mistaken.
Could the Airport Extreme update have changed the way my MBP seeks a connection?
Incidentally, my MBP was purchased in USA but I am in Australia. Are there differences in which wireless channels are used or anything like that which could have been modified by the updated software if it thought I was in the US?
I'm hesitant about updating to OSX 10.4.9 until this issue is resolved, or should I see whether the OS update resolves the problem?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Michael.
    15" 2.33GHz MBP + Cube 450MHz @ home   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Various Macs @ the Office

OK everyone - you can stop panicking on my behalf now...
The problem was with the Channel my Airport Express was broadcasting on. From within Airport Setup Utility I discovered the AExpress channel was set to Automatic, and it had selected channel 13. Channel 13 is apparently not available in the USA (where my MBP comes from), but IS available here in Oz.
Resetting my Airport Express channel to 1 fixed the issue immediately.
Why did it change? I don't know, but I presume that after my power outage, the AExpress reset it's automatic channel selection. Must have just been lucky that it was set to a channel between 1-11 until then.
Hope this helps any other punters out there with similar problems - especially those mixing international components.
Now I finally get to complete my update to 10.4.9!
    Michael.

  • PB Surfs Web Wirelessly, But Admin Util Can't "see" Airport Express - Huh?

    Hi All --
I have a friend (no really a friend, not me, I swear ;-)) with the set-up described below and a seemingly impossible problem. He's asked for my help, and so I'm asking for yours, because frankly the situation just has me stumped. Here goes:
    Set-Up & Other Relevant Facts
    • DSL connection comes out of the phone jack and goes to a Westell model 6100 modem.
    • From there, a short Ethernet cable goes to a Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Switch.
    • Two Ethernet cables exit the Linksys Switch: one goes to a PC, and one goes to an Airport Express (AX).
    • From the AX, a USB cable goes to a printer (a Brother 1440 laser printer).
    • The AX is only about 10 feet from his PowerBook G4 15-inch and he gets a full (four-bar) signal on Airport menulet at the top of the screen.
    • When he first set-up his system, the G4 and the Airport did set up the Brother printer (using the Airport Setup Assistant), and the Brother is listed as a printer on the G4's printer window or such.
    • Both the G4 and the PC access the web fine via this setup (the G4 wirelessly). In System Preferences > Network, the Airport Network is listed, and it says "Airport is connected to the network Apple Network 6c6c1. You are connected to the Internet via Airport."
    Problems
    • When the Airport Admin Utility is opened, no Airport Express appears at all, even when "rescan" is repeatedly clicked.
How can this be? How can the PowerBook be connecting wirelessly to the Web through the Airport Express, but the Airport Express no be "seen" by the Airport Admin utility?
    • In addition, although web surfing is possible for both PowerBook and PC, neither computer is able to successfully print to the Brother 1440. When he tried printing from the PC, he got the following error messages:
    [Status for LPT1]
Result=(02)The printer on this port is not responding.
    Status Line=BUSY:H,ACK:H,PE:H,SLCT:H,FALT:H,SLIN:L,HBSY:H,INIT:H,STB:H
Later, it seemed that printing from either computer would start and then stall, flashing a variety of different signals about spooling or "printer busy" and the like, all of which appeared to indicate things just weren't working right..
Anyway, the initial questions we're dealing with are the ones in bold above. The printer issues are probably are related and they can be addressed secondarily.
Any and all help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Please excuse this duplicate post, but I posted this this morning in the AIrport Express forum at about 8 a.m. and have thus far received no replies at all. In fact, it's only been viewed a total of nine times -- and half of those are me. Very sad, and my friend is growing fairly desperate and is now convinced that only a complete reset and fresh start will fix his problem......

    Hi JDee,
Well, it's the old 'friend of mine' gag, eh. Seriously though, it seems there have been numerous post over in the Aiport forums regarding this issue. I guess the first thing your friend can try is following these instructions to reset the AE. One of the other things discussed was the firmware version for AE. Some users have reported that version 6.1.1 works better than 6.2. One user reported being able to use the other button in AE admin utility, then entering the assigned IP address and password to gain access. One user resolved his issue by enabling the setting Distrubute IP addresses in the AE. It should be noted he also reset up his network at that point as well. Now as far as the printer goes, below are some instructions from iFelix for the Windows side which may be of some help.
    Printing from Windows to AE
Problem finding Printer Driver on Windows
For the Mac side apparently there are issues with that model printer. Here's a link of compatible printers that iFelix put together. You'll see the notation next to the Brother 1440. Hope that helps a little. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.
