Mac Mini - strong enough for design and coding software?

Hi everyone,
I apologize if this question has already been asked, but I couldn't find anything like it in the forums, so hopefully I haven't missed anything.
I'm looking to replace my (old) G5. While I'd love to buy a Mac Pro, I think it might be a little out of my price range. However, I plan to install (and use frequently) the Adobe CS4 suite, with all of its different programs - in addition to using iPhoto and the usual Mac apps.
My question is - can the Mac Mini handle this kind of software (PS, DW, Illustrator, InD) effectively, or is it not powerful enough?
Advice appreciated.
Thanks!
Torie

littlemissfoggy,
Considering the tremendous upgrades that the Mac Mini has acquired in the past years, if you upgrade the memory to a 4GB channel, then iPhoto would run flawlessly, and as for the Adobe CS4 suite i think that the Mac Mini would handle it, but if your wanting raw power meaning you want everything to go really smoothly, my best bet would be an iMac

  • [iPhone] Is a Mac Mini good enough for iPhone development?

    Hello,
I tried to search on this topic, but...not much luck.
Anyway, I am considering getting a Mini as a reasonably priced entry into iPhone development. But I'm concerned, does the Mini have enough horsepower for the task? I'd rather not be limited in terms of what I want to play with (potentially, both "productivity"-type apps, as well as some gaming development). Will a Mini serve me well, or is this a Bad Idea?
    Thanks!!

The mac mini is fine, and frankly having a superpowerful machine for development is a mixed blessing because the actual machine is such a dog, that you get careless about speed. But of course your development time is shortened somewhat. THe key to keeping a mac mini happy is to make sure you have enough RAM. 2 GB is needed for all the tools to be running at once. Also you can hot-rod your mac mini with a 7200 RPM drive and really perk it up. Or of course use an external firewire drive.

  • Is a mac mini good enough for editing home video?

I'm considering buying a man mini to do basic video editing. This will be home videos, nothing heavy. Will a mac mini cope with putting an hours and a halfs worth of holiday clips together?

I would say YES. If you are planning of using iMovie, for example.
I was doing my family videos on my "old" iMac 2007, with Corde2Duo. I'm sure it's quite enough on the new plateform.
At least, it's the first price to do it.
I'm waiting a possible new line of Mac Mini, with latest features to get it.

best object oriented design techniques. Also, is there
one available in the area of coding techniques.I don't think that there are any accepted "best practice". One of the important reasons, I think, is that design is a highly creative activity which cannot necessarily be categorized, schematized, or any think like that. There are, however, good design solutions to standard problems (in the software developer community they are known as "patterns"). I think that they are a good starting point when learning OOP because they are exemplary. A good book on the subject of patterns is:
Gamma et al. Design Patterns. Addison-Wesley. 1995.
But if you don't want to invest in a book, there is plenty of patterns material on the web. Try searching for "software pattern" or "design pattern".

hi, we are using mac mini's for our developement purpose. connecting the same through using Real VNC. Mac mini's are late 2009 and 2010. Now we have upgraded them to 10.8.5. after upgrading having display issues after launching the simulators, we are unable to view the icons we need to move the simulator (into different places) to view the icons.
Also we are having Mac book pro's (Late 2009 & 2010) after upgrading them to 10.8.5. Unable to launch the mac, getting only white screen with apple icon.
Let me know is there any specific Hardware (Graphic Cards) we need to use for the same.
Please provide me the early solutions.
    Regards,
    Suresh.

    Hi, try this first...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Are the eMac and the G4 Mac Mini similar enough to...

use the eMac's tiger upgrade to upgrade my mini to Tiger? I know the other versions of tiger upgrades are specific to the hardware, i.e. powerbook, ibook, imac, ect. But seems to me eMac and the G4 mini are very similar. Possible?
    thanks

" Are the eMac and the G4 Mac Mini similar enough to use the eMac's tiger upgrade to upgrade my mini to Tiger? "
    No.
"I know the other versions of tiger upgrades are specific to the hardware"
And so are the eMac's upgrade discs.

    Hi Tom,
I just wanted to ask you about what you said about the color correction. To be quite honest I'm not sure what the best workflow is, and I haven't gotten my feet wet in multi-cam editing. Basically my work-flow has been.
    1) Import from the camera as optimized media - I found that adding color-correction at the import stage cause a severe hang with my tape-based Canon unit.
    2) Color-correct the imported files before loading any files into a project
    3) Drag files onto the timeline
    4) Click on the color-correction box
    5) Start editing - Usually I have one camera zoomed a little tighter on the singer, one on the whole band, and my iPad or iPhone camera at different angles so I start cutting things according to who is the focus of the moment, add a Ken Burns effect every here and there, Titles, an occassional transition effect.
    6) Add music effects after the looks are taken care of
    7) Export
Are you recommending clicking on the color-correction box after everything is done?
    Thanks - TZ

  • Mac Mini GeekBench score for 2.26, 4GB and 320 HD

I just got my new Mac mini.
People have been asking about "is it worth it to get the upgrades", I won't comment on that as its really a personal perspective thing, but here is the score for my machine (all factory upgrades).

My decision was based on wanting a replacement for my Dual G5 1.8, 3GB Power Mac. This new mac mini is very fast (in my opinion) even with the "slow" 5400 RPM disk. The idea is that I'm waiting for Leopard to come out to replace the Power Mac fully, this Mac Mini will then replace my AppleTV for Media Center using Plex. I wanted as much flexibility so I went 2.26 and 4GB memory. I also think this thing is an incredible piece of art, I couldn't bring myself to crack the case

  • Mac Mini vs G5 for Sims2?

My wife plays Sims2 all the time. She is currently using a G5 2Gig Ram and 250gig HD. It is starting to slow down and I think it is time for a new machine. She has an Apple 20" monitor.
I was wondering, would a Mac Mini be enough machine for Sims2? I am worried about the limited graphics of the Mini mostly. I could get an iMac and sell everthing, but I don't think she will like the glossy display. I wish Apple made a turbo Mini for times like these.
    Kevin

The most likely causes of the G5 slowing down are:
    1) the hard drive is too full -- try to keep at least 10% of the drive as free space, preferably more (click on Macintosh HD icon once, then File > Get Info, to see how much space is "available" (ie free))
    2) you need to do some "housekeeping": try a system maintenance program like Yasu:

  • Is MBP 13" 2.66 strong enough for FCE?

I am making the switch from PC to Mac. I need a laptop for basic editing with both audio & video. I am more concerned with video editing, as my work has tons of audio PC's decked out. I should preface I work in radio, so my audio edits are mainly :10-:60 pieces. And my videos are 1-5 minutes in length, mainly YouTube stuff, I'm not trying to make Avatar here! I'm going to buy a MBP with Final Cut Express (I work with Sony Vegas Video 9.0 now). So the question! Is a 13 inch MBP 2.66 strong enough for me? Should I upgrade the ram from 4G to 8G? Or should I be looking at a 15 inch? Thanks!

    Hello Atpmixx,
the MBP has definitely enough horsepower to run FCE but it doesn't have much screen real estate ... personally I'd go for the 15" screen. Be aware that you will need to add external storage in order to edit effectively. Also be aware that FCE does not handle all formats/framerates.
Upgrading the RAM will not be necessary: Final Cut is still 32-bit software and thus can't use more than 4 GB of RAM ... in other words, it'll not speed up up your render times.
    hope this helps

  • Using Mac Mini server, DNS, static IP, and external domain name

    Greetings!
I need to know the direction to take in order to use my domain name for the great features offered in the mac mini server, while having local and public access to my server with security.
I am trying to do the following on my new mac mini server:
    -Set up DNS (myserver.private)
I have a static IP I want to use for all this with my ISP
    -ftp access
    -ichat ([email protected])
    -email ([email protected])
    -ical etc. ([email protected])
-my work website(mydomain.com) with public access!
    -host websites(other domains)
I need to know the direction to take in order to use my domain name for these features. I have a domain name with godaddy, and I am happy with keeping it with them, however, how to I make my external domain name work on my private server with public access is the question?
    Thank you,
    Daniel G

[Read this|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] as a start; you're basically going to decide if you want to use NAT or not; if you have enough public static IP addresses to avoid the disaster that's NAT. If you want to use NAT (and few reasonable folks want to, but sometimes we have to), then you get to run your own DNS services internally, and establish public DNS and power-forwarding at a (preferably server-grade) firewall. With NAT, you end up with split DNS, and that's covered in the cited document.
ps: it's easier to [use sftp|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/942]; while that shares three letters with ftp, it avoids most of the problems of ftp.

Is it right to mix sizes of memory modules in a mac mini 2012? for example 2Gb 8Gb?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can do that without any problem, always that the total amount of memory is less than the maximum memory your Mac mini supports. A Late 2012 Mac mini supports 16 GB of memory, and you can find in this site the steps to install more memory > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4432?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#1

Just unpacked Mac mini and powered up using Mac mini to VGA display adaptor and VGA monitor. There is no signal to the monitor ( power is on).
    How to see the display?

[    13.093] (==) No Layout section.  Using the first Screen section.
[    13.093] (==) No screen section available. Using defaults.
    [    13.093] (**) |-->Screen "Default Screen Section" (0)
    [    13.093] (**) |   |-->Monitor "<default monitor>"
[    13.093] (==) No monitor specified for screen "Default Screen Section".
            Using a default monitor configuration.
First step would be to create the necessary entries (easier to make a complete xorg.conf versus xorg.conf.d/##-whatever.conf).
All Desktop Environments / Window Managers rely on X.  Man pages are helpful, possibly some headaches ahead as I fought a dual-monitor display this way.
I currently run a xrandr script to switch displays on my hp pavilion: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xrandr#Scripts
    Check it out.

You need either a FireWire 800 to FW 400 cable or a FR 800 (male)/FW(female) adopter.
However. it the Mini (note that you still have the late 2012 Mini, Apple has not updated the Mini since then) has Mavericks it may not work satisfactorily. I tried it on my 2102 and I get abount 1 frame every 20 seconds. Another uses posted same problem.
