Mac Mini & Time Capsule as fileservers on the same network

My Mac Mini is currently functioning as an AFP/SMB fileserver, and I have my Time Capsule forward ports 139 & 548 to the Mini to share publicly. This is working just fine and dandy, but I'm unable to use my Time Capsule as a backup drive. The error I get when I try to enable file sharing on my Time Capsule is:
"Enabling “Enable file sharing” conflicts with one of your port mappings. The port mapping has been disabled. Update its public port to continue using it."
But changing the port of my Mini file sharing breaks the AFP/SMB connections. Does anyone know how to configure the Time Capsule to forward ports to my Mini for file sharing, yet still allow file sharing internally for Time Machine backups? (Even better: allow my Mini Server to use the Time Capsule as a share point...)
Thanks!

Sorry, I'm a bit confused since you say in one sentence that:
....I am thinking about adding a new airport extreme....
Yet, you mention AirPort Express in the rest of your post as a product that you are thinking about adding to the network.
But first.....
If you configured your current AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network", but did not notice any improvement in wireless coverage, then you may have likely forgotten that a setting on the Time Capsule must also be enabled to "Allow this network to be extended".
So, if you did not also enable that option on the Time Capsule, it is true that you would not notice any improvement on the AirPort Express as far as extending the wireless network...because the Time Capsule settings would not allow the network to be extended.
Is it still possible to use the time capsule as a backup disc for time machine still if I add the airport express?
Yes. But before you add any new products, you might want to revisit the idea of using your current AirPort Express to extend....keeping in mind that both the Time Capsule and the AirPort Express must be configured correctly to allow the extension to occur.
Post back if you need more details on this.

  • Time Capsule and Extreme on the same network with different roles

I've just bought a new Time Capsule device which replaces my slightly older Airport Extreme Base Station. The TC is attached directly to my broadband modem via ethernet. This works fine. I want to use the old AEB as a 'print server', in other words a device I can plug printers into to enable wireless printing. This is because the printers are in a different place to the telephone line in.
With the TC running on its own, everything works fine. But as soon as I switch on the AEB, I get errors up on screen such as "IP Configuration; 91.84.115.158 in use by 00:1f:f3:3e:95:6d, DHCP Server 192.168.1.1". Alongside this error message (which occurs every 30 seconds) the internet connection frequently cuts out and comes back online by itself. Also, some computers are connecting to the AEB instead of TC for an internet connection. It's chaos!
I have tried TC in various wireless modes such as "Participate in a WDS Network". Likewise I have set the old AEB in "Bridge Mode" for internet connectivity and the WDS is set as a remote. It seems I can only have one on and not the other. I have tried using different radio channels too without much luck.
I have looked through the designing Airport Networks manual, but the illustrations have an AEB before the TC whereas my network is the other way round.
Can anyone point out where I might be going wrong or offer some design advice / good links?

I've done a hard reset of both devices and swapped them over vice-versa. The problem seems to be the network will only support a SINGLE device. In Airport Utility I can only get one of the two devices to show in the sidebar, rarely both devices are temporarily present. I've configured both to use the same network names and WPA passwords in the hope they will 'merge' together onto the same network. But one just seems to cancel out the other.
Right now I've go the old AEB plugged back into the modem and its working. But the new TC device which I've plugged into the printers wont show on the network and has the amber light flashing.

Can I use Time Capsule and LaCie at the same time?

Before I answer your questions, let me first just say thank you so much for your amazing patience and helpfulness.  Whether or not we get to the bottom of this, I am very, very grateful to you.
We will get to the bottom of it, and you're quite welcome.  Don't feel you ought to know all this stuff -- none of us were born with it!
By the way, in answer to your original question, yes, you can use the Time Capsule while backups are running. There's no conflict at all.
    1)  Estimated size of full backup:  205.94 GB
    2)  My LaCie has available:  11.04 GB of 359.95 GB
That's part of the problem right there; 360 GB is a bit small to back up 206 GB.  Ordinarily, a Time Machine drive should be 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up, so Time Machine can keep a reasonable "depth" of old backups for you.
It looks like Time Machine is trying to do a fairly large backup, and there just isn't enough room for it.
But something doesn't quite add up.  Time Machine should have deleted all but your most recent backup, trying to make room for the new one.  But that would mean there should only be a bit less than 206 GB on the disk, not 360.
A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

Migration Assistant has been running since yesterday evening.  My Dell is now telling me that its trying to reconnect to my Mac and to ensure they are both using the same network.  I have an Ethernet cable plugged in them and they are both on the same WiFi.  What can I do?

    Hello Wyodor,
thanks for your reply on my question.
You are wright the index file is 308 KB.
And offcourse that I delete my files and documents is not an Iweb problem, but because my English is not that good, that I thougt I try to tell the whole story, and hope people can read trough the lines.
Why I didn't use Iweb to upload to the server is because the server company recommanded to use file zilla. And I am a nobody with this kind of things, so I did exactly what they tell me to do.
No, i did not make a backup of Iweb and the domain file, but reading other messages on this forum showed me that I can maybe try to make empty the cashfile (?)
and otherwise I have bad luck and have to make my website again. Offcourse I have a lot of examples from all the pages (copied from the local map to my USB stick) and my website is aprox. 15 Mb, (not so big) so it will cost me a few nigths.
But I'm still hoping on a miracle :-)

  • Mac Mini / Time Capsule

I have a Mac Mini server. It is connected brandband modem via UTP. The Time Machine backup is to external WD HDD via firewire cable. These 3 items are placed next to each other.
I have a Time Capsule, it is connected to the broadband modem via UTP. It is placed next to the above 3 items too.
I am planning to use this TimeCapsule for backup too (so I can "get rid" of the WD HDD).
How should I connect the Mac Mini to the Time Capsule, assuming I do not want to use "wireless" technology for network and backup.

What edition of server is on the mini??
If the Data is showing up in finder, then it should work fine.
Next I discover => System Preferences (not responding).
That is rather bad.. you have managed to freeze up the server.
That would be caused by something like duplicate IP addresses .. are you running the server as dhcp or static IP?
Did you reboot the whole network after the rearrangement?? Just to get IP sorted out.
Otherwise I have very little to suggest. Even if you have an error somewhere it should not freeze up the server. Check the system logs and see what is happening.. otherwise go back to how you had it running..
Oh and if you had any software from WD involved.. remove it.
WD has the worst most dodgy software apps for Macs. They cause all kinds of trouble.
    See C17 for example. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

  • Home network with Mac mini, Time Capsule, etc.

    Hi,
I would be thankful for any links to instructions or advice on the "best practices" for setting up a home or small business network (DNS, firewall, etc). My primary objective is to learn how all this works, my second objective is to host my own web-site on the mini.
    My equipment:
    - Mac mini Server (OS X Server 10.6.2)
    - iMac (OS X 10.6.2)
    - MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.2)
    - TimeCapsule
    - A few Windows Vista machines
At the moment I have the TimeCapsule connected via Ethernet cable to the cable modem and acting as the wireless router. If I setup DNS on the mini, should I connect it directly to the cable modem via Ethernet cable instead? Since the TimeCapsule does not have a firewall (or?) I guess the mini fits best as the end-point to the Internet. Will the TimeCapsule continue to act as a Wireless router for all other devices on my soon-to-be private network?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Thanks,
    Per

I'm pretty new at this myself, but here is some of my advice and I'll also pass on some of what I have learned.
If you haven't purchased hardware yet, get the Mac Mini Server. It is a slightly modified Mac Mini that has 10.6 server. It looks like you have this, a good first step. Get Applecare. Apple Care will get you three years of Enterprise level support. The answer to any GUI based server queries are only a phone call away. Applecare for the Mini can be had for $120-150. Enterprise level support is $149 per call. You'll make back your money on the first call. I made my first call the other day and talked to someone for over a an hour. He helped me solve my problem but also gave me good advice. I foresee using my Mini similar to how you will be using yours, so I'll pass on his advice.
Here is a connection diagram as best as I can do in a text world
Internet <--> Cable Router (CR) <-->Time Capsule( TC) <--> Internal Network
The Internal Network would be your Server, other Macs & PC's. The server would have a local static IP address. The other machines would be configured to use DHCP.
TC would be set up to share a public IP address. Its DNS would point to the DNS Server you would set up on your local server.
The Mac server can be setup to handle the DNS information from your local network and then reroute information to your existing DNS chain for information it doesn't know. If you want to resolve the server externally and internally, which is a definite if you want to access the web, server from the outside world, you'll have to do a little more work. Each of these steps can be a project unto themselves.
1/2) Get a static IP. You could do some of these other steps without a static IP, but some of the server setup requires a static IP, especially reverse DNS lookup.
    1) Get a Domain name.
    2) Get the public DNS configured so the reserve lookup (Public IP Address points to Domain Name) and forward lookup (Domain Name points to public IP address) refer to each other.
    3) Set up a "Split DNS". This step was trivial...once I figured out how to do it. You'll have 2 IP Addresses in your Server Zone record, one pointing to the local IP address for the server and the other pointing to the public IP address.
A couple of advantages to this set-up:
    1) TC works as a Hardware Firewall. This helps to relieve some of the load on the server, because it doesn't have to waste CPU cycles on Firewall activities.
    2) SL Server recognizes the fact that you are using a TC and will be able to configure the TC to open up the ports that it needs open to let in stuff from the outside, like port 80 for web services. For this to work well, you will have to disable the firewall on your CR , but do not fear, the TC will be your Firewall. If you don't/can't disable the Firewall on your CR, you will have to open ports as needed on the CR for outside information to get in.
    Hope this helps,
    Stephen Magladry

  • How can I bandle Mac-mini Ipad and Iphone all with the same usser name and password

I alway's have problem with my ID AND PASSWORD  also I want to bandle my mac-mini Ipad and Iphone with the same password and usser name how do I do tyhis?

    Hola amigo
If you wish to use the same Apple ID for all your Apple devices then you need to set them up that way from the start. If you did not use the same Apple ID for them all then you would need to erase the iOS devices by returning them to the factory settings and starting over as if they were new.
However, content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to download or update your content bought with one Apple ID with a different Apple ID. So you would need to decide if your are abandoning extra Apple IDs that you may have created and the content that you acquired with that Apple ID.

  • Time Capsule/Airport Extreme is the same as a Netgear router, right?

Idiotic question, I know. I just wanted to be sure before I bought it. I have Comcast cable internet and I'm leasing one of their Netgear Wireless Cable Modem Gateway - CG814WG routers. That router is horrible (the connection dies when my wife is on her computer and I'm playing Halo 3) and I want to replace it with Time Capsule so I can have a better connection with my computers and XBox 360. The Time Capsule/Airport Extreme can replace my Netgear with no problems, right? I believe I'll have a much better network experience without losing connection like I did with my Netgear.
Side note: The internet feed to the house is fine. My cable tv is fine and the line is good, so I'm figuring it has to be the horrible router since everyone else has complained about that model from Netgear as well. I'm just hoping Time Capsule will be my ultimate replacement.

Excellent. I did contact my ISP and cross-referenced their list with the bestselling cable modems on Amazon.com. Looks like the Motorola SB5120 Surfboard modem works great. It also has an ethernet port and cable so I guess that'll connect easily to Time Capsule since you said I only need an ethernet cable.
I guess I might have to make sure the initial setup goes good, in which case I might be back here to make sure I did that right.
Thanks for the help though. At least I'll know that I'll have the right hardware that works with everything I have.

  • Help! Time Capsule not connected to the Internet

    Hi everyone!
I have this problem, and hope someone can help me.
In my house I have this network
Modem/Router Netgear DGN2200 connected via ethernet to Airport Express.
Airport Express is set to create a wireless network, bridge mode.
In the house I also have a Time Capsule set to extend the wireless network, bridge mode.
Time Capsule is connected via ethernet to my TV decoder to have extra services through the Internet.
Ok. All worked fine until a couple of days ago.
Then, I didn't change anything but Time Capsule (and so the TV decoder) seems to have no acces to the Internet anymore.
But Time Capsule is still available on the local network, so I can access to it, make backups and so on.
    What should I do?!
Thanks for your help and sorry for my bad English.
    Matteo

Did you try a simple reboot of the network devices.. turn off all the network stuff..
    Restart in correct order..
    1. Modem.. wait 2 min.
    2. Express.. wait 2min.
    3. TC.. wait 2min.
Then try the TV.. if it doesn't work reset both the express and TC to factory.. and redo the setup.. you had them setup correctly but please use SMB names.. since the TV will not talk apple.. SMB names are short.. 2-20 characters.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
so for example the name of the Express.. AEx Name of the TC.. TC1
    Name for wireless. Aex24ghz
Use a different name for 5ghz if your Express is a dual band latest model. Aex5ghz
Use fixed channel so that it is locked.. eg. 2.4ghz on channel 11 5ghz on channel 40.
The TC will follow the wireless exactly.
    See how you go.

  • I cant back up my mac with time capsule.

While trying to back up my imac with time capsule it stops at the same point and says there is an error.  Techtool deluxe scan revealed I have errors in volume structure, surface scan, and directory scan. All 3 say i should reformat the media, replace the data and test again. How do i do this?

What does the error message say?  It's likely one of the messages in #C3 of  Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • HT3728 I am trying to use my airport time capsule as an extender on my network, but I can't find it anywhere now.  Tried a reset, but device is lost.

I set up a new network with a new AirPort Extreme station.  I was able to reset all of my old devices, Airport Express, etc., by I haven't been able to get my time capsule to attach to the new network.  It just doesn't show up anywhere.

Ultimately I am using it as an extender itself.
Thanks, but I'm not sure that you understand that an extender can function using a network Ethernet wired connection or a wireless connection.
So, we asked for clarification on what you wanted to do in our previous post. We asked......
Will the Time Capsule "extend" by connecting using an Ethernet cable to the AirPort Extreme?
Or, are you hoping to have the Time Capsule "extend" the signal wirelessly?
    We also asked.....
Are you still using OS X 10.6 as your profile indicates? If not, what is the operating system you are using?
We have a Time Capsule, have seen this issue, and know how to fix it. So we can likely help, but we cannot see your network, or know your thoughts, so we must ask for your assistance.
It is possible that you are not comfortable providing the information that we requested. We understand. In that case, please wait for another person to respond to your question.

  • Can't connect to computers on the same network and same office

Hi everyone, I have this problem from some time now, I have on the same network some computers with ethernet, and some with Wi-Fi.
All are connected to the C-Net Wireless-G Router.
My iBook is on the Wi-Fi zone (All have 10.4.11) and I can see the computers on the Ethernet area, but I have an iMac 2.0 next to my iBook and I can't see it.
How is that possible? Am I making something wrong with the subnet mask or IP address?
All are configured to use 192.168.1.254 as the router and on the subnet 255.255.255.0. Manually.
The IP variates from device to device on the 192.168.1.X numbers, starting with 100 on the iMac, and ending with 113 on an old 8600.
Wy can't I see the iMac?, si so close that I can reach her with my hands, but can't connect to transfer files over the network.
If anyone could give me a hand here, I will apprettiate the advice.
Thaks to everyone, Pablo from Argentina.

  • How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs

How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs & artists? What is the correct way to transfer my 3000 songs to Time capsule, to free the memory of my Mac? Thanks a lot. Carlo Molinari (Rome - Italy)

How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs & artists? What is the correct way to transfer my 3000 songs to Time capsule, to free the memory of my Mac?
The following are the basic steps to transfer your iTunes Media folder from your MacBook Pro to the Time Capsule (TC). Note: You will leave the iTunes Library, and its associated files, on the MacBook Pro as you will only be moving the media files.
Be sure to shutdown iTunes before starting.
Next, move the "iTunes Music" folder, located in ~/Music/iTunes/, to wherever you want on your TC's internal hard drive. Remember to leave the Album Artwork folder, as well as the three individual library files where they are on the MacBook Pro.
Wait a while. If you have a large library, this will take a bit of time.
Once the iTunes Media folder has been transferred, open iTunes. Note: It will still be looking at your local iTunes Library on the MBP. As such it will think that the iTunes Media folder is still on the MBP as well. However, we just relocated it to the TC. If you attempt to select any song, you will get an error that the song is "missing." Not to worry, we will correct this in the next step.
We need to tell iTunes the media has moved to the TC's internal HDD. To change where iTunes "looks" for the media, open iTunes and go to the Advanced > General tab and use the "Change..." button to tell it where your new "iTunes Music" library is located.
Once this is done iTunes will likely pop up a progress window telling you that it's re-analyzing your library. Let it complete this step.
As a final check to make sure everything when as planned, click on any library file from within iTunes and press cmd + i (or View > Get Info). At the bottom of the Summary tab in that window is a "Where:" section that tells you the actual file path to that piece of media; be sure that path begins with the name of your TC's drive, and not "Macintosh HD."
