Mac Mini too hot?

I would like to know if these readings are considered "too hot" for a mac mini (current gen):
HD: 42 C
CPU : ~55 C
Ambient: 40 C
Temperature readings are from iStat Nano, and the current outside temperature is about 90F (unfortunately, no air conditioning or fans in the room).
The reason I'm worried is because the mini feels very hot to the touch, and I don't even hear the fans inside running even though I'm sitting less than 3 feet away from it. The current fan speed is 1791rpm.
Thanks,
Jonathan

If it makes you feel any better my unibody mini runs similarly hot, and yes, mine too is hot to the touch (but far from being so hot I need to take my hand off it). Interestingly but not surprisingly, the side that the power supply is on feels noticeably hotter than the other size.
I think this is normal and expected as I previously compared it to the hot bottom of a MacBook Pro which makes perfect sense considering the aluminum unibody design and MacBook Pro parts inside + the internal power supply. I sometimes think the aluminum unibody design was intentional to double as a large heat sink. The ventilation where my mini rests probably doesn't provide the best air flow as it sits on a home-theatre style shelving system which is complete closed at the back with the exception of a small hole to run cables through. Actually, my generation one G4 mini in the same location would run so hot at times it would force the system to sleep (or a "coma" as I liked to say ha) to cool down.
Maybe someone should start a thread to post their unibody temperature readings? But I think there would have to be some standardization in the sampling as my CPU can run as cool as 50C and as hot as 78C depending on the load on the system.

  • Mac mini is hot (temperature)

    Hello, how are you.
I'm worried about the temperature of my mac mini. It's hot. Is it normal?; I mean, it is heating below my mac mini (so much).
Please, I hope an answer as soon as you read this.
    Thank you, very much.
    Have a good day.

"the bottom of your mini is a heat sink"... when you talk about bottom, you're meaning about the side which mac mini is supported on the desk? I'm meaning to that side.
And about how much is it hot?... think about an adapter; if you touch it, you'll note that it is so hot. maybe a little more in this case. Generally, the temperature of my room is 32°C.
you mean that part??? the bottom is the rubbery part
to hot??? hmmm....well, if it starts getting higher than about 75 you should worry, but don't worry, that won't happen, because the fans will start to come on at about 70

  • Mac MIni running hot after memory update

I have a late 2010 Mac Mini. Using Temperature Monitor, it always showed CPU temperatures at anyhting between 45 and 65.
Last week, I upgrdaed the memory from 2gb to 5gb. Since then the temprature has been contantly between 69 and 72.
Are these events connected and, in any case as the temperature limit is 105, does it matter?
    David

please explain this 105 temperate limit. where is this mentioned?
intel cpus can go really hot with no apparant damage
my core i7 right now is running 150 degrees, because it is doing a mixture of seti @ home and milky wayi @ home packets
my video card just idling not doing much is 104
just turning a computer on can cause it to go to 105 degrees farenheit
i used to have to have a problem with my mac mini actually over heating to weird blue screen and rebooting that was because my pram / nvram or whatever you call it smc needed to be reset and it wasn't turning the fan on
when apple says operating temperature of 95 degrees and 115 degrees storage temperature , they are talking about the temperate of the room. they arent talking about the actual cpu temperature
when intel cpus hit the actual temperature limit (which is around 160-180 or so ) it will shut down and drop its load and and shut down hard to save itself. before that temperate is reached, the intel cpus will commonly step down their speeds down to dissapate heat
105 is nothing to worry about
    update
my studio xps core 2 duo laptop that i am typing on for which i am not really doing a whole lot on it  except like
    browsing the web is:
    gpu 126 degrees farenheit
    temp sensor 113 degrees farenheit
cpu (both cores) 99 degrees farenheit
now if u meant 105 degrees celsuis then i think the warranty would be voided

  • Mon mac mini chauffe... (mac mini very hot)

  • 2011 Mac Mini w/Intel HD3000 video signal loss on HDMI and Thunderbolt?

I've had this issue since I first purchased my Mac Mini back in August.  I also discussed this issue with a friend who just purchased a Mac Mini too, and he has the exact same problem.  When connected to my monitor via HDMI, the screen will flicker to green, go out, then come back on.  Sometimes I have to cycle my monitor input button before the screen returns.   Also, if I connect to my monitor via DVI to Thunderbolt adapter, the screen flickers to "snow", then cuts out intermittently. It's the same problem either way.  I'm connected to a new Asus VE276Q 27" monitor. I connect my Xbox and PC to the same display with no issues whatsoever. This is my first Mac product and I'm VERY frustrated with this problem. A firmware update was released a few months back regarding flickering when connected to an Apple Cinema display, but this had no effect on My machine. I've also verified the display refresh rate setting as well.  Anyone else out there having this problem?

I recently got the 2.3 GHz Mac Mini. I tried hooking it up to a Viewsonic VX2035 with the enclosed HDMI DVI converter. I get the same results as you. Nothing on the monitor. It says no analog signal detected. Then the monitor goes into sleep mode. I hooked it up to a  32" Westhinghouse HDTV using a HDMI cable and it works fine.

  • I want to link my Mac Mini through my independent hifi system, which forms part of my home tv system which is the monitor I am using with the Mac Mini. The hdmi cable I am using comes from the receiver of the tv. I cannot get sound from the Mac Mini. Do

I cannot link my new MacMini with my TV's sound system. It's a Pioneer screen & receiver with an independent Pioneer Amp. The Mac Mini does not pick up the sound through the hdmi cable, so how do I get sound going through the MacMini so I can appreciate the music and films I want to hear. Do I need another piece of Apple kit? I have seen 'Express' on Apples web site. Surely I dont have to pay for this as well?
I used to have an Apple TV box which had a seperate audio connection from my Pioneer Amp and it worked great.
    Help will be appreciated

The Mac Mini is going to be used for an Internet connection on the Pioneer Plasma/receiver so I can also play stored films from a seperate hard drive. The receiver has an HDMI connection which I have connected the Mac Mini too. the picture is fine, but there is no sound. I have checked the 'sound' settings on the Mac Mini and it registers the Pioneer PDP receiver is connected but states it has no audible connection?

  • Intel Iris Pro on a mac mini?

    Hello to everyone,
well I suppose that Apple is going to replace all intel 4000 GPU with the Intel Iris Pro. Is there any information about using this hardware in mac mini too? Is there any official anouncement about that? This Iris Pro is sharing the CPU or is it a part of it? Does this GPU has any GDDR5 VRAM or it is using the DDR3 main system RAM? Does this Iris Pro gives better results than a seperately GPU with even 512MB GDDR5 memory?

Iris and Iris Pro are the integrated graphics that come with
the Haswell series processors.  It is not a "seperate" option.
As far as the performance and architecture of Iris or Iris Pro,
Google and after the first few hits you should understand how it
    works.
As to what will be in the next gen Mini and when it will be released,
only the insiders at Apple know that and they can't talk.
I will say that the Mini has had the same form factor for quite a
while, so maybe there will be a complete make over.

  • Mac mini, Time Casule & Macbook

    Will this system work?
A MacBook laptop (already have), a Mac mini (and attach to LCD HDTV thru HDMI), a Time Capsule for back and for wireless network; attach Time capsule to DSL modem. DSL modem & Time Capsule would be in one room and TV & Mac mini in another--I want to have a wireless network that I can connect my MacBook laptop & Mac mini too. I should then be able to connect to internet thru macmini, stream movies via netflix, itunes to TV (also laptop).

  • Does the Mac Mini have an ethernet port?

I just wanted to know if the Mac Mini has an ethernet port on the back of it? I have internet with an ethernet port, and I wanted to know if it would work on the Mac Mini too??

The others are correct, the Mac mini, like all Macs in the past ten years or so, has an Ethernet port. You can check out all of the Mac mini's technical specifications here:

  • Airdrop can't not find my Mac mini 2012

I have an iPad mini retina, an iPhone 5 and a Macbook air 13 2013. They can Airdrop between each other in the three.
I also have a Mac mini 2012. However, neither the Macbook air nor the iOS devices can find my Mac mini. Also, my Mac mini can not find my other devices either.
I have read the thread which says Mac mini 2011 is not capable of using Airdrop. But mine is 2012.
The handoff works perfectly in my Mac mini 2012. I can switch apps between devices. I can answer my phone through the Mac mini too.  So I wonder why airdrop is not working.
    Anyone have the same issue?

    I have solved this problem.
If you add your Mac mini an SSD and you use some method to enable the trim, like Trim Enabler, you should use the reverse action of the app provided or command your use. Now airdrop will work.
    Then enable trim again.
If you believe above is not your reason, try below command in the terminal.
    sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
    sudo kextcache -system-caches
    Then reboot your computer.

  • 10.7.5 Screen Issue on Mac MINI

    Hello,
Since upgrading to OSX Lion (10.7.5, build 11G56) on my Mac Mini, my computer frequently forgets what the screen looks like and begins cycling thorough different screen resolution configurations (each usually worse than the previous).
At the moment, it is stable, and showing the video as: AMD Radeon HD 6630M - 256MB
System: Mac MINI - 2.7 Mhz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
The monitor is an ACER x211W - SD and is generally connected via a KVM switch, however, I eliminated the KVM switch by directly attaching the system to the monitor.
I've disconnected all the video cables and reseated them.
Running apps: MIcrosoft Outlook, iTunes, Safari, MyDay, Quicken Essentials.
It did this occasionally (but tollerable) on the prior release of OSX, but since the upgrade, the system is becoming almost unusable.
    Thoughts?
    Greatly appreciated.
    Rade

I think I have isolated the problem to the temperature of the unit.  The system worked fine for several hours then began degrading.  The Mac MINI felt hot to the touch.  I unplugged everything, took the access panel off the bottom and hit it with compressed air (quite cold on expelling from can) until things felt cooler again.
There were no gobs of dust or animal fur flying out, nothing noteable imbedded in the circutry and the circulating fan is, indeed, spinning.
So far, the system seems stable again, but it has been only about 20 minutes.
