Mac mini unusable after upgrade to 10.5.6
I upgraded a Tiger 10.4.11 Mac mini to Leopard using the 10.5.6 DVD.
After the upgrade, the computer is so slow it is unusable. Spotlight it indexing but that does not seem to be the cause of the slowdown. I checked the system log, and it shows "memberd" is crashing continuously.
I used launchctl to remove memberd from the launch list and the computer works normally again.
How can I prevent memberd from being launched every time I restart the computer? What could be starting it?
If memberd is constantly crashing, there's something else wrong with your system that is causing it to do so.
Simply stopping memberd isn't a solution.
Have you tried the usual troubleshooting techniques of running Disk Utility to make sure your hard drive verifies OK, and running a "Repair Permissions?"

Mac Mini lagging after upgrading to Mavericks
Upgraded Mac mini to Mavericks. System before was running great with no lag time and fast with the internet along with different applications, email, uploading photos, no problem. After upgrading to Mavericks noticed lag times in logging into different applications, browsers, email and definitely uploading photos. Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Slow Mac Mini Server after upgrading to OS X Yosemite
I Have a Mac Mini Server mid 2010. With 2.66Ghz intel Core 2 Duo and 4Gb DDR3 and after upgrading to OS X Yosemite the computer is really slow and get stuck very often. Please help me figuring out what’s the problem and to make it run faster.

How do I copy the Mac OS Lion after upgrading. I upgraded to OS Lion and now I want to do clean install because my macbook became slower since i installed lion.
Please, help! Thanks.You need to get on a Snow Leopard system, log into the App Store with your Apple ID, then download the Lion installer. The re-download is free. After the installer is downloaded it will start automatically. Now, quit the installer. You can now make a copy of the installer that you will find in the Applications folder.
Now, you also may be able to get this to work: Open the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key while clicking on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. This is supposed to activate the Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. Clicking the Install button will then re-download the Lion installer. -

Late 2012 Mac Mini slow after Yosemite upgrade
First time on forums - hope Im not asking a questions that has been asked several times before. I purchased a mac mini not even a year ago, and its was plenty fast until I updated to Yosemite. I also found a link to Etresoft from another questions and ran it. For the sake of expediency - Ill go ahead and post the results. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.

10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

Mac mini disaster after iTunes upgrade
Hi,
I've got an Intel mac mini. The hardware test shows it to be a Macmini2,1 with a Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.83GHz, 2MB L2 and 1 gig memory. No hard drive info shown.
The short version of the story is I can no longer boot my machine. It makes it past the grey apple screen and then sits on the blank blue screen forever. Booting in Verbose mode gives me lots of text which means little to me but mostly seems okay. This is followed by blank blue screens alternating with black screens with ominous messages in which something called 'importer' and Loginwindow.app are featured prominently, with the word 'crash' strewn about quite a bit.

I recently upgraded to iTunes 8 after being prompted to do so by the auto update feature. I can't remember for sure whether I did it before or after the upgrade, but I changed the sharing name for this computer and the external drive where my iTunes library is stored. After the install I tried closing iTunes and got the spinning pie. I tried to access Force Quit from the apple icon but it didn't respond. I occasionally could get iTunes calm enough to access it's menu but it didn't have the Quit iTunes menu option listed, which I found really odd. It wasn't greyed out, it just wasn't there. Ultimately I hit the power switch and it hasn't worked since. I've tried various key combinations on start up, including the pram and nvram ones. I tried booting from the install CD but it says Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer.
Anyone with any tips or fixes would be a hero in my book.

You don't go to the install screen.
Boot into the DVD and after the language screen, top left is a menu. In menu, under Utilities, select disk utility and repair HD and permissions.

2008 Mac Mini Crashes after ram upgrade
I just upgraded my Ram from 1 to 2 GB on my Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo and it was a bad stick so I reaplaced it and it works great but I was typing something in to Firefox to search it and my screen ram multicolored line and a popup came up but I didnt see it because of the lines so I did a hard shutoff and started it back up and it is runing fine. I am still scared to use it because of the crash. Anyhelp?

Unstable Mac Mini 2011 after ram upgrade
I put in 8GB kit ram from Corsair. Every specific things is matching with Apple's requirement on ram upgrade. I got Corsair 8GB KIT DDR3 SO-DIMM, 1333Mhz. The first boot with the new ram was fine but after 10 minutes of normal using (Safari, Spotify) and testing open Photoshop CS5 it crashed.
I shut down the system and tried to take off the rams the put it in again just to make sure that they're there perfectly. Second boot, everythings seems work well but after a while, maybe 20 minutes, Safari crashed and a "crash log" is sending to Apple. Happened the same with Spotify, Photoshop when it was open. I couldn't reopen the programs so I did another reboot.
The third reboot, seems fine until 1h30min the whole system crashed, the computer is rebooting by itself and showing a message of "something is wrong with the system" so it needed a reboot.
And Safari crashed once again while I wrote this.
I hope someone can help me solve the problem. I'm running the lastest version of Lion Mountain (10.8.2), 2.5Ghz i5 mid 2011 Mac mini.I have used Corsair RAMs on multiple Macs with
a lot of success (running a 16 gig on a 2011 Mini Server
I am currently typing this on). It may just be you got a bad
one. It happens. Depending on where you purchased
it should be no issue replacing.
You should check though to see which is bad. Put
both of the old RAM in to make sure things still work
as before. It is possible something else may be wrong.
If all is well, then swap out with one new module at a
time and see how it works. It may be just one module
(most likely). -
Mac Mini unusable with external camera
I have a mac mini and using FaceTime and Skype. After en undermined period (may be 1 minute) the camera starts to flicker between 2 different pictures.
The same thing also happened before i exchanged my mini with a newer machine. I have tried 4 different cameras (Logitech and HP).
My screen is an 24 inch HP. All software is updated.
This problem makes Facetime and Skype almost unusable.
I assume there must be a bug in Mountain Lion, but I think it also happened in Lion.
Regards ArneSeveral thoughts ... when you're having interface problems, do an SMC reset instead of a PRAM reset, as often USB/Firewire operations issues are power-related:
1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
3. Wait at least 15 seconds.
4. Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
5. Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
Are there any driver or firmware upgrades for either of the drives? If you haven't, you might check on the manufacturers web site.
Also, does the firewire drive also support USB? Have you tired it on USB, for comparison? -

I've had a Mac Mini since June 2005, and have performed regular maintenance (running cron scripts, repairing permissions, repairing hard disk etc) I also use Yasu once in a while. However in the recent past, especially after the 10.4.8 update, it has become slow as a snail? Has anyone else had a similar experience? If yes were you able to resolve it?

Mahesh.If we take as a starting point the fact that there are no massive numbers of threads all reporting 10.4.8 has slowed Macs down, it would be reasonable to conclude that in itself, the 10.4.8 update (or indeed, 10.4.8 itself) is not the culprit. Certainly I have upgraded a number of Macs, including my own G4 minis, to 10.4.8 and neither have slowed at all. In fact it would be hard to identify any performance changes at all since the update, and even the old G4 is still running exactly as before.
I think one needs to be a little cautious with 'regular' maintenance tasks, because unlike you, I haven't ever run any on my systems and I've seen countless occasions when people perform maintenance on their Mac systems without any cause or reason. That's not to say that doing so causes problems, just that every time the user takes control of the system out of the hands of MacOS, is an opportunity to do something MacOS doesn't like.
I'd go with the previous poster's suggestion to download and install the combo update, bearing in mind that the restart afterwards will take some considerable time. When the system is back up and running, do nothing else other than to repair permissions.
If the system still runs slowly after that, you have a problem with something that is affecting MacOS, and it would help if you could post as much detail on what symptoms you see - ie, whether the application icons bounces for a prolonged period in the dock when you try and run something, or whether the system seems to pause and wait for periods of time. To help determine what's going on, download and install a copy of MenuMeters (from www.versiontracker.com) and switch all the meters on. When the system is running, you'll then see a running indication of what the system is busy with. Posting that will also help us work out what's needed.
lastly, like all utilities, YASU changes over time to match the various MacOS versions, so make sure it's the latest copy you have. Earlier versions could make errors with things like prebinding which could slow the system disproportionately. -
Hi - I've got a Mac Mini and am currently on 10.8.5. My boss has just upgraded to Maverick and I can now no longer access her Pages and Numbers docs. When I try to upgrade Pages and Number the apps store tells me I need to upgrade my system. Is this right ?
The newest iWork applications have got a different iWork format that isn't compatible with older iWork versions. If you want to use her documents, you will have to upgrade to OS X Mavericks. As your Mac mini has got OS X 10.8.5, you can upgrade to OS X Mavericks, so open the Mac App Store and download OS X Mavericks free of charge.
Make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
After upgrading, open the Mac App Store, go to Updates and install the most recent iWork version -
Mac Mini G4 processor, upgrade to leopard?
i saw a great deal on an old g4 mac mini. as an apple fanboy i squealed at a chance to get one of these old bad boys. turns out as most g4 mac minis, its on tiger. (YIKES, i know its smooth but boy is it obsolete) now rumaging through my mac os x cds, i dont have 1 single 10.5 leopard boot up cd. after some research i heard many people buy cd's second hand and they just wont work with their g4 mac mini. anybody know what cd i should look for? (YES I NEED EXACT. ) or links? thank you so much!
Another install DVD disc that may work OK if you happen across it, is the often discarded black & purple center X installer that says, "Mac OS X Leopard - CPU Drop-in DVD" version 10.5. 2Z691-6040A. I was given one of these in a box of extras when I bought a mix of Mac hardware stuff, keyboards, cords, and some other as-new installers in their original boxes. A fine day all in all, for under $55. total.
This disc works to not only install a new OS X Leopard 10.5 in any supported hardware, but can also boot the computer so as to run the Disk Utility from the DVD. Within the menus after the computer boots from this disc, is an option to not use it as an upgrade over Tiger, but instead to install a complete system.
{So I've done that. My Mini G4 1.5GHz last model likes it, so did my MacBook 13" first model (low end 1.83) when I got it and there was an issue with the hard drive. Both were used machines and needed some work to run correctly. It also could boot/install to an iMac G4.}
Of course I have a few other official Leopard installer disc sets, and a Tiger disc in retail box, and Panther, etc. Sadly most of my OS 9.2.2 & before software was traded, sold, and donated away with the older hardware. And I still haven't needed to use the retail as-new Leopard 10.5 disc with instructions in its box, that I bought for $10. And the keyboard is stored inside its box, for a spare, too.
If you get going with an obsoleted OS, be sure to make a bootable clone on a durable external self-powered drive device that supports booting from a system clone; then you can have a backup that can also help troubleshoot. A partitioned drive in an enclosure could give you space for several cloned systems.

HT1338 Late 2012 Mac mini restarts after shutdown
Have a late 2012 Mac mini 2.3 i7, 16GB (crucial upgrade) that when I shutdown, it promptly restarts. Tried the following, disconnect from UPS, put original 4 GB ram in, P-ram, checked power settings. Problem happened after a while, not immediately. Any suggestions?
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports. -
Mac Mini late 2012 upgrade to Maverick loop issue
Hi there,
I'm a Mac Mini noob.
Last night I downloaded Maverick and this morning I clicked install.
The Mac rebooted and then loaded then showed some error messages and then goes to password screen. I enter it and it says there was a problem and the MAC will be restarted.
It now just loads, shows the error message and automatically goes to password enter screen and then says theres an error and will be rebooted after I enter the correct password.
Can some one tell me whats wrong and how to fix or even to cancel this upgrade? I just want my Mac Mini to work again.

Hmm I attempted the following and it was resolved and I managed to get back to my desktop and out of the restart loop (phew). I then pulled up my guts and double clicked the Maverick install again and this time it was successful. I followed this article which I found shortly after I posted the problem on here:

If you are upgrading to OS X Mavericks and get stuck in a boot loop that will not complete the installation, you may need to hit a special key combo to force the computer to complete the installation and upgrade process.
Gotta Be Mobile reader Steve Small reached out to let us know about the OS X Mavericks Upgrade bootloop problem, which forced his MacBook Pro to get stuck showing the odd text on a screen below, which looks like a OS X crash and an error message that says, “Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue startup.”

Ultimately this error prevented Small from upgrading to OS X Mavericks, as it did many other users. Thankfully if you get stuck in this OS X Mavericks boot loop you can press four keys at startup to reset the NVRAM and get past the boot loop.
OS X Mavericks upgrade boot loop and kernel panic can prevent an easy upgrade.
When you restart the Mac, press Option-Command-P-R until you hear the startup sound a second time. This will reset the NVRAM, which is where your Mac stores the following information.
Speaker volume
Screen resolution
Startup disk selection
Recent kernel panic information, if any.
In this case, resetting the NVRAM should clear up the boot loop issue which was possibly related to the startup disk selection stored here or to a kernel panic. The error screen shown at the top of this guide looks very similar to a kernel panic.
With this out of the way you should be able to continue the upgrade to OS X Mavericks. If the computer does not pickup where it left off you may need to go to LaunchPad and select Install OS X Mavericksagain.
