Mac mini upgraded; will not boot.. suggestions?

Hello all,
There are other threads with upgrade problems, but they've all been 'answered' and I'm still stuck. I've just attempted an upgrade (1.5 solo to T5500; core 2 duo 1.66, FSB 667), and I seem to be having problems. I've zapped the pram, but when I attempt to power on, the system doesn't boot. My led turns on and I can hear some hardware (though I think its just the fan), but no screen image and no peripherals. The physical installation wasn't perfect, but it went ok.. (I broke one of my nylon posts, like many others; able to replace it with a fix thanks to frantic google searches.) The unit appears to have power, but there's no chime, no disk sounds, and no boot screen. I can't find any solutions posted, so I'll ask. What should I do?

damfair,
(thanks for your help, by the way) Well, here's what I did:
2 weeks prior to upgrading my CPU I decided to upgrade my RAM. I bought some apple-brand 1 GB (x2) modules on craigslist from some guy upgrading his MBP; he didn't need his old sticks, and he was selling them cheap. I 'cracked' open my mini, installed the new RAM, took a quick look around, closed it up, and rebooted. After a soft pram reset, everything booted fine and the computer worked great for the next few weeks. Then, confident from my successful RAM upgrade, I decided I'd up my processing power as well and starting looking for used but decent core 2 duos on eBay. I found a 1.66 GHz core 2 duo for $75 and won one (out of a lot of 20) for $60. The seller shipped the new cpu quickly and when it arrived a few days later I set to work installing it. The physical installation didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped (I, like many other people, ended up breaking one of my heatsink posts. I was able to find a great fix online though--4-40 nylon screws work almost better than the stock fixtures--and I thought I'd overcome my problems with the upgrade.) After the processor swap, I relocked my cpu socket, "zapped the pram" by pushing the small silver button next to the processor, reconnected ALL of my wire connections and screwed my chassis back together. I left the cover off for a test boot, and I was disappointed to find a non-working computer. I rechecked my connections, even reseated my processor, and combed the forums for possible fixes. All to no avail. To make sure I hadn't damaged my mainboard during the install I even reinstalled my old cpu, and the thing booted fine; no problems whatsoever. I've been in contact with the ebay store that sold the processor and they don't seem to think its busted, but they can't be sure. I was static-safe during the installation and I've even tried reseating my new RAM (thanks to everyone in this forum for the help.) I really don't know what to do next. I'm thinking of asking the ebay people if I could send them this cpu, they'd send me another one (there were a few remaining in the lot after the auction), and I could try another. If the one they sent me IS broken, then they needed to give me another anyway, and if it does work, then no harm sending them back a working processor. I'll update if I can get a new cpu sent to me. Thanks again for any help.

Mac mini server - will not take 4GB so-dimm in bank 0
    Hello,
Memory works ok as long as the old 2gb 1066 so-dimm is in bank 0.
Switching the dimms around is no go. It seems to need that bank 0 populated with an old 2gb.
I can use only one 2gb and one 4gb for the mini server to boot.
It seems to have a hard time figuring out the 2x4gb configuration.
Tried PRAM and NVRAM reset. Always getting 3 beeps.
Any chance of getting the full 8gb detected?

    Hi All,
I had the same problem that you, I had a mac mini server late 2009 with 10.7.3 OS X, with 4 GB of memory.
I have got these two memories on amazon:
    "8Go mémoire - Kit double canal SAMSUNG original 2 x 4 Go 204 broches DDR3-1066 PC3-8500 SO-DIMM (2x M471B5273BH1-CF8) mémoire portable ordinateur DD"
First test to install in the mac mini:
    Slot 0 - 4 GB
    Slot 1 - 4 GB
    3 beeps
    2nd test
    Slot 0 -
    Slot 1 - 4 GB
    OK
    3rd Test:
    Slot 0 - 4 GB
    Slot 1 - 1 GB
    3 beeps
    4th Test:
    1 - 1 GB
    2 - 4 GB
    OK
    5th test:
    reset PMU
    Slot 0 - 4 GB
    Slot 1 - 4 GB
    3 bips
    6th Test:
I did a test of the 2x4 GB in a mac mini 2010
    OK
    7th test:
    Slot 0 - 2 GB
    Slot 1 - 4 GB
    OK
After to read this forum I gave up and I decided to let the mac mini with 6 GB. Well, as I wanted to try it again one last time, I tried to put the slot 0 memory forcing a bit. But I did not noticed nothing special.
Well, at this last time, it works. 8 GB in the mac mini server
    here some screenshots:
I hope this info will help you to resolve this problem. But seriously, I am not giving you nothing else than hope

after installing osx 10.8.2 to my mac mini it will not recognize my admin account. how do i uninstall

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • 2009 Mac Pro Quad Will Not Boot

    Hi.
I have a 2009 Quad 3.0Ghz Mac Pro that will not boot up.
I went to it this morning and the beach ball was spinning. I could not get it to stop and as a last resort, turned it off. It has been working fine, although
I have noticed a little slow (Could be me, though).
When I tried to reboot it, it tried to start, chime went off, but it stayed on the light grey screen and eventually, it had a folder with a question mark in it
    that blinked.
I disconnected all peripherals, no change.
Tried to boot from the optical drive  with Disk Warrior, no change.
    Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Brian

The Chime is generated in Software when the first part of the Power-On Self Test has passed. If an appropriate source of software can be found, booting is likely.
it had a folder with a question mark in it that blinked.
That says it could not find the last-specified source of software. the drive may be damaged, or it may have forgotten where it should be looking.
Tried to boot from the optical drive  with Disk Warrior, no change.
Next try a 10.6 DVD. "A Mac that cannot boot from an appropriate Installer/Utilities DVD has a Hardware problem".
One of the simplest things it should be able to do is Startup Manager. Hold down the Alt/Option key at startup and it should draw a gray or blue screen and slowly draw an Icon for each potentially-bootbale device (including a bootable DVD, if inserted).

  • New mac mini system will not recognize wireless keyboard and trackpad.

My brand new mac mini system will not initialize properly.  The return on the track pad are not being recognized, although scrolling is. Any others find this?  Support could not figure this out on the phone.  They sent me out to get new batteries and now they are closed.  Batteries have been changed and still nothing.

My Mac MINI gave me one heck of a time trying to get it  to recognize my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. both Apple brand.
I finally had to connect an old USB mouse and keyboard to get the silly thing to connect.
    Don't forget to repair permissions.
I also had to shut the computer down and start it back up a couple of times before it would connect.  I think it has to do with the new Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology.
I also turned off my Bluetooth devices and turned them on again, then I pulled the batteries out a couple of times and tried again and again.
I also put in new battries even thiough the ones I replaced were about a week old.
Finally, the MINI recognised the mouse and keyboard.
I wish I could tell you which thing did the trick.

Yes the original Install Discs can be replaced for a nominal fee. Call AppleCare, you will need a credit card and the serial number of the machine. You can use the AppleCare Contact Info for the phone number on your part of the planet.

  • Satellite A665-S6050 Windows 7 Home Premium Memory Upgrade will not boot

Hope there might be a clue to assist.
Checked Toshiba support for recommended memory to upgrade from 2X2GB to 2X4GB.  Ordered Kingston KTT-S3BS/4G x 2 as recommended.  BIOS recognizes the memory, but Windows will not boot.  Tried Safe Mode and hangs after a few seconds.  Tried Repair Computer, also hangs after a few seconds.  Put original memory back in and it boots fine.  There was a brief flash of a blue screen once, but no dump file to be found.
To me it seems as ifthe issue is Windows, but I do not know enough about this to say definitively.  Just based on the percieved behavior when Windows trys to boot (hanging).
Any ideas appreciated before I go through return and try something else.
    Thanks.

he ordered from Toshiba and there memory did not work  ...    the kit he ordered was the one recommended for his laptop from Toshiba and ordered from Toshiba
Yes he did. But he ordered the Kingston memory that Toshiba recommended as he said...
Checked Toshiba support for recommended memory to upgrade from 2X2GB to 2X4GB.  Ordered Kingston KTT-S3BS/4G x 2 as recommended.   ...   I tried both of the Kingston modules recommended and neither worked.
I'm suggesting that he try the Toshiba part number (PA3677U-1M4G) suggested in the spec, which is made by Axiom.

If it doesn't work, probably there's a logic board problem, so it's possible that you need a new logic board. Take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller

  • 2009 Mac Book pro will not boot up. I've tried to do a disk repair it says ETF partions need repair. When I try it says unable to unmount disk. I've tried to re-install the OS and when I do that the message says unable download.

My 2009 macbook pro will not boot up and I have tried everything to get it to work. Please help!!!!!!

Do you have an external drive? If no, then you will need to purchase a drive so you can backup your data.
If you have a drive that is formatted as GUID you can select to install OS X from recovery mode on the external drive. Now you can boot from that drive and make a backup of your internal drive so you can erase and reformat the drive.
    Recommended Drives
USB 3.0 drives work on USB 2.0 but you do get 2.0 speed. They are cheaper because they are popular PC drives.  If you get a new computer you'll get the bump to 3.0 speed. I don’t recommend FW. The newer computers don’t have FW ports. You would need a connector in order to use the drive on a newer computer.
Size:  I recommend either the 2T or 3T drives.  Often they are cheaper than a 1T drive. The 4T drives have more issues and failure rates.
Many drives come formatted for PC but easy to format in Disk Utility.
This Western Digital drive has good reviews: Has a 2 yr warranty. Comes formatted for Mac but I would still format using Disk Utility.
WD My Book Hard Drive for Mac 2 TB (WDBYCC0020HBK-NESN)  $99
WD My Book Hard Drive for Mac 3 TB (WDBYCC0030HBK-NESN)  $119.99
Check the warranty when comparing. The longer the warranty the better the drive. WD makes cheaper drives but with almost no warranty.
Locally, Best Buy seems to have the best prices.
