Mac mini verses dvd recorder: need advice

I am looking at DVD recorders, mostly so I can burn dvds of programs I have stored on my Comcast DVR. Could a superdrive mac mini do the job instead? I think the Comcast box has Firewire out, as well as component and composite outputs. What is confusing me now is, how will I be able to use the TV to access the programs on my DVR, while also needing the TV to see what I'm doing on the mini when burning a dvd? Would I have to switch back and forth between dvr and mini inputs on the tv?? Is it all going to be a lot more complicated than just buying a $120 dvd recodrer?

If your video camera is a miniDV camera, which most modern ones are, then all you will need is a 4 to 6 pin FireWire cable. You can get them from practically anywhere that sells computer/video cabling.
And ues, the Mac mini will be able to handle your video editing needs. I would however recommend you upgrade to at least 1GB RAM.

  • Mac Mini for audio recording using LOGIC X

Has anyone had experience using the latest Mac mini for audio recording? I'm thinking of purchasing the 2.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x8GB 1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm  model. I'll be using Logic X along with Reasons, Wave, UA plugins with a Apollo I/O  I'd appreciate any feedback and or suggestions.

I'd work off of another hard drive as much as possible.  Install the applications to your boot drive, but keep your data on a separate external hard drive.  If you try to run OS, apps and big audio data off of that 5400, I foresee performance issues even with 16GB of RAM.  Also, don't forget a second external hard drive for your backups.

  • Missing Mac Mini Restore DVD disk 2, need to Cancel Installation

hi, I'm a Mac newbie. I recently bought a mac mini from someone. Unfortunately, I didn't realize at the time that there should be 2 restore dvds instead of just one (I thought the Os X Tiger drop in dvd was the 2nd dvd).
I'm trying to reinstall the OS X along w/the software b/c I ran into some problems with the Mac mini. But when I get to the screen that says, "please insert Disk 2", I have no disk 2. I can't cancel the installation b/c the Cancel button is grayed out. I tried shut down and restart the computer from disc one directly, but after click through a series of Next buttons, it only leads me to the same screen.
Now I can't use my Mac mini at all. Short of fork over $40 for a replacement dvd from Apple, is there anyway I can restore to the previous point prior to my attempted installation/cancel the current installation?
    Much thanks in advance.
Mac Mini 1.25 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4)

"is there anyway I can restore to the previous point prior to my attempted installation/cancel the current installation?"
No, sorry. That is not a feature of Mac OS.
If you have an Apple retail store nearby head on over there, explain your situation and see if they'd be willing to copy the 2nd disc for you.

  • Mac Mini 2006 MA607LL/A need to buy dual layer burner

Hi guys. I bought a MA607LL/A mac mini. I need to upgrade so it can read dual layer burn cd. So I guess super drive? Which one will fit? Ty

I wouldn't waste the time or money upgrading it to a Superdrive.
Your best bet is to get a faster and more reliable external tray loading USB desktop DVD Drive.
For Example: I'm happily using an LG GE24LU20 that I picked up on sale at BestBuy a few years ago.

  • Mac Mini for audio recording???

    Hello,
My name is Gavin Brinck.  I have been fishing in the pc market for about 6 months.  I just bought a BEAST of a PC with all the parts.  I assembled everything, and seemingly the motherboard is fried.  That's another story.
I am looking into the mac mini, seeing as I have a nice HDTV + HDMI cable as well as a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse bundle to use with it.  I am intyerested in audio recroding, mostly guitar, vocals, and hopefully MIDI controlling in the future.  I like the idea that the mac mini can be a very portable device.
I will be using it to write, record music, play Starcraft 2 HOTS as well as surf, research, and continue to learn.  I am on a budget and am looking into my options.
Is audacity(free music recording software) decent?  Do I really need 8 GB of RAM?  In the future I will probably get an external harddrive for storing all of my information.  I am also looking into getting a camera.  WILL THE MAC MINI FIT MY NEEDS??  I do not need a mac pro, and the mac air does not have hdmi .  I think I have found a decent solution.  Please help!  Thank you.
    all the best.
    -Gavin Brinck

    In addition to BDAqua:
You will probably want to purchase and use an external "sound card" or DAC via USB or FireWire to get decent audio quality from external sources into the Mac.
Audacity is sort of an 'industry standard', but not for complex recording purposes as I read in (and in between) your lines. Free on bord with a new Mac will be Garageband. Once you've got your head around it, you'll love it.
Gaming - I have no clue, but don't expect the lower-end models of Macs ideal for heavy gaming... even the higher-end versions can lack, depending on the games. Check around here and elsewhere, there are gazillions of gamer forums.
Budget & portability: Keep in mind that for a Mini you'll need an external screen, and if that's supposed to be your TV, make sure it accepts data (PC or Mac) signals on HDMI. Or has DVI as well. Otherwise disappointment - not due to Apple!
Eventually take a look at MacBook Pros, they are portable, do come with a screen, and can do more than an Air - depending on model.

  • My headphones won't fit into the jack in my Mac Mini. Do I need a special type of adapter?

Hi, I would like to plug my headphones into my Mac Mini, but they don't fit. I have tried many different types and brands of headphones, but nothing works. Do I need a special type of headphone or a special adapter or something? Or was it an error in building the product? I'd really like the help soon, thanks!

No. The iPod uses headphoes with the standard 3.5 mm plug.
Is the problem that the plug cant be fully inserted?

  • Unable to boot on Mac Mini from DVD burned from .iso image

I'm following the Beginner's Guide to try and install Arch on a Mac Mini "Late 2009".
I have downloaded archlinux-2014.10.01-dual.iso and associated .sig, and have verified it using the gpg2 command described in the guide (including the link to http://sparewotw.wordpress.com/2012/10/ … -sig-file/ which gave some assurance that the ambiguous answer produced by gpg2 was in fact legitimate).
I then used OSX's Disk Utility to burn the .iso file to a blank DVD. After verifying the burn, it ejected the disk.
When I re-inserted it, I received a message that the disk was unmountable, giving me the option to Ignore or Eject. I chose Ignore. Then I went to the System Preferences > Startup Disk, to see if it would at least appear there as an option, but it didn't.
(I should mention that I also burned the same file to another disk using a Windows machine, and when I inserted it into the Mac I got the same message, so I don't think it's corrupted media. (Bad reader, perhaps? eek.) )
That's where I stand. There are so many variables at play here (many of them Apple-induced, I think) that I've been unable to find a solution that fits my situation. Could someone please provide suggestions / pointers / answer?
    Thanks,
    Chap

Exactly right. Holding the Option key caused a display of various bootable OSes, including the one I had just burned from the Mac using hdiutil (weirdly entitled "windows"). I selected it, and it booted. I now have a console. Problem solved. Thanks.
UPDATE: note that this boot disk *cannot* be seen or selected via the OSX System Preference > Startup Disk panel. Holding the Option key during startup seems to be the only way to select it.

  • Can I install OS 10.4 DVD on G3 B&W (CD-ROM only) from Mac Mini with DVD?

    I have G3 B&W 400Mhz 384Mb memory 9Gb hard drive.
It has CD-ROM, Zip Drive, Firewire, USB & Ethernet and currenty running on OS 10.2.
I'd like to upgrade to OS 10.4, but it's on DVD.
I also own Mac Mini G4 with DVD-RW, and I can connect it to G3 with Firewire using Target Drive Mode. G3 recognize Mac Mini as a hard drive.
Can I install OS 10.4 from Mac Mini? Thank you for your help!

If you mean the 10.4 DVD is a full-retail copy for any machine, not the version that came with the Mac mini.

The DVD might boot on the Mac Pro but if it does the installer will not let you install on the Mac Pro.
There is a possible workaround that is often used, and at one point in the past was even recommended as a solution by Apple.
Boot the Mac Pro in FireWire Target Disk Mode.
Connect the Mac Pro via FireWire to the Mac mini.
Boot the Mac mini from the DVD
Install on to the Mac Pro hard disk which will show up as a FireWire external drive.
Boot the Mac mini from the Mac Pro drive which will show up as a FireWire external drive. You can do this by holding down the Option/Alt key.
Run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server Combo update.
    Shutdown the Mac mini.
Power down the Mac Pro by pressing briefly the power button.
Disconnect the Mac Pro from the Mac mini
Boot the Mac Pro as normal.
Hopefully it will boot normally but now with Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server installed on it.

My Mac mini rejects every CD, DVD I put in. The same very disks disks work perfectly fine on my PC!
It was all working fine for about a year, and then all of a sudden, I have this problem!

Perhaps the drive is bad. Is the mini under warranty? If so, take it in for repair/replacement.

  • Before I reinstall CS4 on my new Mac Mini what do I need to know?

I migrated all my data from my old Mac Mini to my new MM.
Photoshop on my new MM still thinks it's on my old MM.
i.e. The RAM available still reflects the RAM available on my old machine.
i.e. I had 4 GB on my old machine.
I now have 16GB of RAM available but the settings from the old machine
were migrated over to the new machine so the new machine thinks I only have 4gigs ram.
Would the best way to fix this problem be to uninstall my old software and reinstall it
    on my new machine?
    What precautions should I take?
    Is it pretty straight forward?
    Thanks

Yes, always do a clean install. You have up to 2 computers to activate it on so don't deactivate the old one until you are sure the new is fine. Photoshop is not a "drag to the app folder" install. It decides what your system has and places the correct files all over it. Also use the Uninstall utility in the Photoshop folder, never drag it to the trash.
The reason that PS CS4 reports 4 GB is because CS4 is 32 bit only on any system. 32 bit can only address  a max of 4 GB ram.
    64-bit OS benefits, limitations
So while a reinstall is a good thing, it won't see all of that ram.
No way to get by that except to install CS5 or later.
