Mac Mini Volume hidden

Has anyone experienced this problem, the technician at Apple was not aware of this although he had a work around in Terminal.
Problem! Mac Mini Volume hidden after restart. 1 of the 2 hardrives is not visible on our desktop. This hardrive holds all our day to day work. The volume which we call 'WORK' becomes hidden after a restart and occasionally on our networked Mac Pro's first thing in the morning. Re. the networked Macs, the sharing settings are set-up correctly and there is no drop out during the day.
I've been in touch with Applecare and after a long conversation (looking at Disk Utility etc.) the Apple Technician discovered the problem in 'Terminal'. See below screen capture. I have to input this code everytime the Volume disappears, which recently has been every 2-3 days. As you will see the code reveals the volume WORK to be hidden. The 'chflags nohidden WORK' reveals the volume back onto the desktop.
This problem started not long after upgrading to Mountain Lion. Does anyone know the cause of the problem? and most importantly how to stop it happening.
Thank you
Paul

Hello.
I resolved this problem myself… Doing the obvious and thinking back to the time this problem first happened, I remembered that I had changed the icon on that hardrive to our new company logo (this was about a week before and in that time the server had not been restarted or shutdown).
As soon as I changed the icon back to one of Mac Os's own icons (I used the 'Automator' icon), I then restarted and the hardrive stayed visible on my desktop.
This has continued to be the case for the past few weeks. So I'm pretty confident that something in the creation/make up of our own made icon was the cause of the problem?
At the time of the problem 'Disk Utility', repairing permissions etc. didn't fix the problem, just a simple copy and paste of a Mac Os icon in 'Get Info' fixed the problem.
Please reply if this makes any sense in regard to your problem.

Paul

  • Mac Mini Volume Fluctuates

    Hi Everyone,
Apologies if someone has asked this before, I tried searching but I couldn't find anything...
I have a Mac Mini running Mac OS X (10.5.4) with a Logitech DiNovo Edge blue tooth keyboard..for some odd reason (specifically during the day), the volume of my mac goes crazy, the volume display shows up (the one that comes up when you change the volume via the remote) and it keeps fluctuating from 0 to max and back..erratically..sometimes it will go from say level 5 to level 10 then back to 0 and so on...
Initially I thought maybe it was some thing due to light sensitivity..the room is at the top of a building so it get's really bright..but I've tried lowering the shades and that doesn't help. I even tried switching the keyboard off, thinking maybe that was causing it..but that didn't help either.
I have no idea how to debug this, and figure out what it's happening..can someone help me out?
    Thanks a ton in advance!

  • Why is my mac mini volume control locked while using HDMI out?

I'm connected to my Samsung HDTV via HDMI and I'm unable to control the volume from the volume slider or sound control. When I select "SAMSUNG" in the device for soudn output, it  says "The selected device has no output controls and the Output Volume slider cannot be changed.
Please help... this is very frustrating on my brand new Mac!

    1. The Input Tab is greyed out... I believe that would be only for microphones anyways.
    2. I tried changing the format to the other values, 32000, 41000, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

  • Mac mini volume control

I use itunes. Mini to DAC (USB) and then to integrated amp. The volume control on the Mini does not operate. Is this normal? I think I may be losing audio resolution. I explored the audio/midi setup and Sound in System Preferences to no avail. The volume in itunes works and the amp volume works fine.

  • Anyone know when Apple will bring out a patch to fix the volume problem you get on mac mini after downloading OS 10.8.5

Anyone know when Apple will bring out a patch to fix the volume problem you get on mac mini after downloading OS 10.8.5?

Only Apple knows the answer to whether or not there is a verified problem and if so when will a fix be released.  As is their custom, Apple does not talk about these things and the rules of these communities prohibit speculation about future udates or upgrades. It is probably safe to say if a fix is deemed necessary it will be called OS X 10.8.6.

  • Volume controls on my Apple BT Keyboard do not control volume on my Mac Mini

I just updated the OS on my Mac Mini to Yosemite and everything was working fine, but earlier today the volume control buttons on my Apple BT Keyboard stopped controlling the volume on my Mac Mini. I was watching a movie just last night and the keyboard controlled the volume just fine. So the keyboard WAS working fine for a few hours after I installed Yosemite.
When I press the volume buttons I get the screen display for sound and instead of the up and down volume that I usually get when repeatedly pressing the volume button I get a zero with a line through it. The same thing happens when I press the mute/unmute button so the computer is not muted. And it's not an issue with the F key settings in preferences because the volume buttons DO get a response and display on the screen, but the volume doesn't change and, as I said, instead of the up/down scale I get the zero with a line through it.
I can change the volume using the mouse and sliding the volume slider in ITunes up or down, but that's the only way. Also, strangely, the volume icon in the Apple bar at the top of my screen is grayed out. When I click on it, the slider shows volume all the way up and it's grayed out. And if I click and drag to try and change that slider, it doesn't respond.
Basically, it appears that the keyboard is, in some ways, not compatible with the computer. I'm typing with the keyboard now, and all the other buttons work except for the volume up/down/mute buttons. Even the change track, play/pause buttons work just fine. So it's not specific to the music controls. And again, I DO get that display for volume when I press volume up/down/mute with the zero and line through it.
I've owned Macs for over 10 years and this is the first time I've seen this. Very, very strange so any help possible is appreciated.

  • Mac Mini mid 2011 volume drops

I have a Mac Mini (Mid 2011) and recently the volume output from the headphone jack to external speakers cuts out randomly.  I can get it back by raising or lowering the volume.  Any thoughts on a fix?

    Hi,
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Any change?
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?

It is standard Mountain Lion error due to the networking ability which is comparable to wet string. (actually that was lion.. it dried out some with Mountain Lion.. higher in the hills perhaps!!)

But many people are suffering the same issue..
And the above is even a little out of date.. you might need to do a reset to the TC.

  • The volume keys on my Logitech K760 wireless keyboard do not work with my 2.3 GHz, Intel Core i5 Mac mini which runs Mac OS X 10.7.4. Anyone know how to correct this without having to re-code firmware?

My first post to the Apple Support Community so it looks like all I wanted to know is covered in the title. The research I have done led me to solutions that I am not comfortable trying for fear of irreparably damaging my keyboard and/or Mac mini. Does anyone have a simpler solution? Please? Hellooooo?
Just in case the title is too long to show, I have re-pasted here:

  • Volume is muted when Mac Mini starts up.

    Hi all,
I currently use my previous generation Mac Mini (Core 2 Duo 2.0) in my media center.
Whenever I restart the machine, the volume is muted when it starts back up.. I then have to go in and manually unmute it.
Because this is part of the entertainment center, it's kind of a pain.
Anyone have any idea what is set that would be causing it to do this?
    Thanks for any info!

    Hi Steve,
Can you use a keyboard to audio volume control? Sounds like something is overriding the system somewhere.

  • How do I remove OSX/FkCodec-A  from my Mac mini? I am running Yosemite and the path and file name is /Volumes/macvexe/macvexe.app/Contents/MacOS/mac.installer. Sophos was unble to remove and it will not go to trash.

Sophos found this on my mac mini (early 2009) - OSX/FkCodec-A and could not clean it up. I am running Yosemite 10.10 and the path and filename for this Trojan is   /Volumes/macvexe/macvexe.app/Contents/MacOS/mac.installer. Could someone please tell me how to get rid of it as Sophos is unable to remove and Trash can remove it.

    outdoor,
How did you originally install iWork on the Mac Pro?  was it preinstalled?  The machine seems old enough that you should have an original install DVD that came with the mac pro.
Amazon has the install DVDs for iWork '09:

To move tables between sheets you can select the table, copy, then paste after activating (by clicking) the destination sheet.  If you really mean move, then use the cut command (rather than copy).
To copy... use the menu item "Edit > Copy"
To cut... use the menu item "Edit > Cut"
    Then paste in the destination

  • Intel Mini will only boot into safe mode - hangs on ANY Mac OS volume

I have an Intel Mac Mini... the core2duo 1.83GHz or whatever.
I acquired it from it's previous owner, as it was "broken".
He could not get it to run an install disc.
It will not boot any of the Mac OS install media (DVD or CD - 10.4, 10.5, 10.6).
It will not boot/install a Linux disc (I haven't tried, but that's what I was told).
    It WILL boot/install Windows !?!?
So... anyway, I removed the HDD, and installed OS 10.6 Leopard on it (FW Target mode installs kept failing at the end - regular retail DVD). I then reinstalled the HDD back into the machine.
The system keeps hanging at the same point it would when trying to boot an install DVD - after the screen turns blue, it goes back to the gray screen, then immediately freezes.
However, I eventually discovered that it WILL boot into safe mode !
Everyone kept saying it's the logic board failure, but if it boots into safe mode, can that be true ? It doesn't seem to me that it would be hardware based in that case - unless it's just a specific component, like the Airport module or something.
The last line displayed in Verbose mode when it hangs is:
    "athset_txchainmask[5124] sc->sc.config.txchainmask 5 mask 5"
It also says something about the Airport just before that.
I tried removing the Airport module and it still hangs.
I also tried different RAM, with the same results.
I ran the 10.6.2 combo update in Safe Mode. It still hangs. Haven't tried 10.6.3 yet, though I do have it downloaded and ready to install.
This thing is driving me crazy. Please tell me there's a fix, OTHER than replacing the logic board ?!?! It just doesn't seem like it should be so complicated considering that it runs in safe mode.
    It's rare I can't figure out a Mac problem - please help !

Very strange, and getting stranger !
Ok... so, from safe boot mode, I installed Windows XP Pro using the boot camp assistant.
Everything installed perfectly. I started up from Windows, and put in the Mac Mini recovery disc, in order to load the drivers. The Boot Camp software started with Auto Run, and I clicked through to install everything. The drivers start loading...Windows reacts positively, with the system tray announcing "new hardware installed" every 30 seconds or so. Airport/WiFi IS working (in Windows), as it detected my router/network...this is where it gets F'ed up - when the installer gets through with the drivers, and installs the boot camp software for Windows - the system reboots, goes through the usual Windows startup...the desktop background appears, but no icons or start menu - then it reboots again...same thing, again, over and over in a loop.
Went back into OS X (safe boot mode). Installed reEFIt (a bootloader utility), to see if maybe I can bypass the Mac OS/Boot Camp bootloader. No luck. Install worked, but still had the same issues.
For the heck of it, I try installing Linux Mint 8. The live CD starts up OK, but only as far as the boot menu. I tried the installer first - after the splash screen, it hangs on a plain gray screen (w/o the normal linux installer language selection menu - just solid grey).
I tried running the live CD w/o the installer - the actual OS. Same thing - after the splash screen, it hangs, only it's a black screen this time. If I use verbose mode, it still seems to hang on the WiFi card.
Here's the strangest thing yet - Ok, remember, it wouldn't boot normally into ANY Mac OS volume - including the installer DVDs - only in safe boot mode...
So, I try the "hackintosh" IPC osX86 10.5.6 DVD - it boots into the installer with NO problem, WITHOUT safe boot mode ! I tried installing it unsuccessfully. I forget now which options I choose, if any, though I may try it again later and pretend it's just a non-apple PC with the same specs as the Mini (or try just the "base system", and the bootloader - then run the official Apple updates)
This last thing really makes me think it has something to do with the EFI/bios - however, I've only been able to find info on how to update it, not replace or restore it - and it's only from a working install, not forced from a flash drive or CD (plus when I do try the installer from safe boot mode, it says it's current and unneeded).
I still haven't changed the hard drive. After almost successfully installing Windows, I made the assumption the -hardware- was OK, and reassembled everything.
Currently, I'm trying a direct installation of Windows XP Pro SP2 with which I'll try installing the drivers WITHOUT the boot camp software, to see if the WiFi (Airport card) and everything else is indeed working OK (remember too that the system passed ALL the ASD 3S116 tests).
So anyway, that's the current status. Any new ideas anyone ?
    Thanks.

I have a time capsule that I use for my apple computers.  My iMac has no problems but my Mac mini keeps getting this error for backups:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/JIP’s Mac mini (2).sparsebundle” is already in use.
    What do I do?

  • Mac mini occasionally boots in startup volume screen (SOLVED).

Here is my original message from March 08:
"I've had this problem since I've had my Mac mini (about a year now). Sometimes the startup volume screen appears despite not having any other Hard Drives connected apart from the boot drive (which is the internal Hard drive) and despite not pressing any keyboard keys on startup.
I am using 10.5.2 with the latest mini firmware and am unable to think what could be causing this? I have selected my main hard-drive in the startup disk preferences and have no permissions/hard drive problems (so says disk utility) but the problem persists. It's a minor annoyance but one I would welcome any help with."
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1433640&tstart=0
Because the original post is archived I thought I would post the answer in a new thread. The answer to this problem was to replace the network cable connecting my Mac mini to my Apple router.
I think the previous faulty cable was causing the mini to do a phantom network boot and that's why the startup volume screen came up from time to time.
Since, the cable change no more startup volume screen problem.
Phew, this has been bugging me ever since I bought my mini. It's nice to know sometimes it's the simple answers that work

I have a similar problem. Whenever I startup my Mac Mini, an icon of the "Macintosh HD" appears in the middle of the screen. It doesn't go away until I click on it. After that, every thing works fine... until I use Safari. If I use Safari long enough, some type of glitch occurs that doesn't let me type correctly; Safari will stop working as it should be, and every time i try to type, some really weird symbols appear, like these ones: ßêÄ©¶¢. The only option I have left is to restart the computer, over, and over, and over again. Please help!!!!

Your computer requires a special Mountain Lion version that it's not available right now, so you have to wait until Apple launches it again
