Mac Mini Vs G3 Blue & White Tower

Alright here is my question, we have a G3 right now that is running on OSX 3. something. I use this computer mostly for the net, Itunes, and photos and it a dog, it's slow and needs to be upgraded. So I thought, I might as well spend the money on a mini. The wife who uses the G3 for work sometimes when she is at home, doesn't think we will gain anything. She uses indesign, photoshop, things designers use. Since I don't use any of these programs, I think she's crazy. It would have to be better, could it be worse? I'm looking for a nuetral 3rd party, please help..

In itself a new mini would be WAY faster than your existing G3 - and for a general point of reference, the $799 mini has broadly similar performance to the original G5 dual processor 2Hz power mac released in late 2003.
Thus, on the face of it, you are right and your wife is wrong.
However, it's not quite that simple. Firstly, the mini uses generally slower laptop hard drives that spin at 5400rpm, and this tends to place a limit on their performance. In your case, your G3 likely also has the same general performance drives so that won't matter. What WILL though is the software being used.
For you, using iTunes, iPhoto, browsing the internet and such like, a mini would be like night and day in comparison to your G3. This is because these applications are written to run 'natively' on the Intel processors in the mini, so they run at full speed. The software your wife uses (inDesign and Photoshop) is written to run on the older G3, G4 and G5 processors. These will actually run on the Intel hardware, but require Rosetta, which is an application that does on-the-fly translation to allow PPC-based software to run on Intel-based hardware. It works, but isn't so fast, so her experience would not be so great.
To optimize performance, ideally you'd want to go for maxed out RAM of 2Gb. That would give Rosetta plenty of memory of it's own to run in, and a decent bit left for the application too. It won't be so fast, but it would be a notable improvement for her.
Of course, as and when new versions of these applications become available, they WILL be native, so she will then be able to gain the same performance boost that you'll enjoy from your software!
If it was me, I'd get one. In the short term it would improve your use markedly and give her some speed benefits too. In the long term with updated software, she would discover that the mini leaves the old G3 standing!

What kind of screws are being used on the PowerMac G3 Blue & White tower (for example, the ones that keep the handles and feet in place)? Hex (Allen) screws?

Yes they are screws, and yes they have Allen (hex) heads. Mine respond well to M2.5 mm Allen wrench, and in a pinch a 3/32 inch is a little sloppy, but seems to work.

  • Simple things to do do help speed up your g3 blue & white tower

i know everyone here is having similer issues with running mac os x on a g3 blue and white tower well here are some simple tricks to help you out
    from what i have learned
question: when i try to install mac os x on my g3 tower b&w the tower gives me a blank screen or doesn't show a boot screen even though the monitor is on
answer:make sure you have your old operating system installed before switching to mac os x and go into control panel and make sure your monitor settings are set to 640x480 or 800x600 then try to install mac os x the g3 seems to not like the mac os x installation being ran in 1024x1248 and this causes the system to hang or display nothing on the screen a simple fix once os x is installed you can switch the settings back to 1024x1248
question: after upgrading my hard drive to a 80 gig hard drive my programs crash or hang
answer: make sure your macintosh contains at least 256 megs of ram or even 512 megs of ram and update the ide caable in the g3 tower to a ata 133 hard drive cable the cable will help stop lag issues
question:i want to do video editing but i heard that the mac g3 tower is to slow to do so
answer: not true you can edit any video you want to on a g3 mac as long as you have enough memory and hard drive space and upgrade the cd drive or use a external dvdr rw drive for macintosh (warning though your quaity will be a little shaky but not bad)
doesany one have any other questions please post them here i would like to know

Any rev 1 you should avoid upgrading a drive to use the native IDE bus as anything that is capable of more than ~18MB/sec (all current drives) will result in data corruption, which is well documented.
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/g3-zone etc.
It depends on what someone really means by "video editing" and how much time they have or are willing to wait - that is what the G5 Quad is built for
The difference between a maxed out G3/1000 1GB and 15K boot drive, Radeon 9200 still doesn't compare to MDD specs below. And unless you are using a 10K Raptor in the video slot (66MHz) disk I/O will be limited to 53MB which is all the PCI bus allows for writes.
A Core Duo Mini or iMacIntel unless you already have done all the upgrades, in which case you know what B&W will and will not do.

  • Solved Mac Mini (late 2010) Blue Screen Hang issue

I posted several questions about blue screen hang and was able to fix my problem, after LOTS of work and searching in various forums.
I had been unable to use my computer for over a month; it was simply hanging at the blue screen, and that seemed to happen when my Finder.app had crashed, hiding all my document icons on my desktop, etc. I also had been having issues with Time Capsule and my backup Iomega disk, which is touchy.
When I tried a fix my icons had returned but I had been unable to use computer after rebooting, and I had tried every sort of key combo including trying to boot from the original install CD, etc., but nothing worked. I could not even reboot using original 10.6 software CDs, and was only able to log in Single User Mode and had tried many fixes with Terminal, and finally, this worked, two of the fixes I used are listed below.
It seems, in part, that resetting certain "privileges" worked.
This tip first tip is for Mac OSX 10.3 to 10.3.9 and even though I am on 10.6.8, I ran it, and it worked. THis is the original link location: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411
       1. Start up the computer in Single-User Mode.
       2. Type: in Terminal the command
         mount -uw /
       3. Press Return.
       4. Type (in Terminal, note space before mv)
          mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist preferences2.old
Note space between ".plist" and "preferences".
       5. Press Return.
       6. Type:
         mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist preferences3.old
       7. Press Return.
       8. Type: reboot
       9. Press Return.
Then I followed up with this tip to "Reset certain privileges"
      1. Start up the computer in Single-User Mode.
       2. Check the volume with fsck.
       3. Type: mount -uw /
       4. Press Return.
       5. Type: chmod 1775 /
       6. Press Return.
       7. Type: reboot
       8. Press Return.
When I rebooted, yayyyy! I was able to log back onto my computer, however, all icons were missing, again, so I typed this fix
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder & disown
I am not sure what 1775 means, but this fix got my computer back up, saving me at least a $150 bill at the Genius Bar.
When I typed those commands into Terminal, this is what returned, and seems to be some  QXPscrpiting issue, though I have no idea what that is. and again, some  Dropbox issues. If anyone has any idea what all those issues are regarding ScriptingCodes please let me know.

    Great work, thanks.
As far as those errors, ypu have some missing OS components it seems.
And, before the mount -uw you really should've done this...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • Mac mini dual display - blue screen flashes frequently

I recently purchased a mac mini i7 model, with fusion drive.
I have upgraded the RAM to 16GB.
I have also purchased 2 monitors, both are LG 22EA63V LED.
I connected one monitor direct HDMI to HDMI.
The other monitor is connected from Thunderbolt to HDMI.
Everything worked amazingly well for the first few weeks. Now, not so much....
I frequently have the screen freeze and flash blue, and then resume as normal dual display mode.
Other times the screen will flash blue and then come back as a single display. In this case the Thunderbolt to HDMI display appears as primary display, while the HDMI display loses connection.
If I unplug the HDMI display completely, the blue screen flashing does not happen at all.
So, what could be causing this problem, and how do i fix it?

    Hi Matt,
See if there's some setting on the HDMI monitor for Input Source, or things like Auto-tune.

  • Do mac mini 2014 support blue ray

I have a Super slim usb2.0 slot-in dvdrw. the seller tell that it support blue ray but I can not see it in my mac mini. Can somebody help?

What is the exact model number an manufacturer of the drive?
If the drive itself is functional, a Bluray disk should at least mount
and be visible in the finder.
Of course, as IIIaass has pointed out, you will need to purchase
player software to view the movies.  In addition, when it comes to
playing BluRay movies, some USB 2 drives work and others don't
    depending on the software.

  • How do I pair my new Mac mini (mid 2011) and white Apple Wireless Keyboard (2003)?

I just bought a new Mac mini (mid 2011) and can not set it up via my Apple Wireless Keyboard (2003). I'm disheartened but not surprised that my Bluetooth 4.0 Mac isn't backwards-compatible with my Bluetooth 1.0 keyboard. But I can't find any documentation confirming the fact that my non-paired, but tested & perfectly functioning keyboard will not work with current Macs.
I was however, able to locate a tech support doc (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4112) that mentions my Apple Wireless Keyboard (2003) is not compatible with iOS devices. (Which is not critical because iOS provides a non-physical keyboard. Aside, it would be lovely were Apple to add a non-physical keyboard to Mac OS X, if only so new desktop owners can continue to set up their Macs in a pinch.)

I just bought a new mini mac (lion 2011) with a wireless keyboard.  I could not get the mac to recognise the keyboard.  Spent several hours back with the Genius team who replaced keyboard and mac but did not get anywhere.  They gave me a wired keyboard, was able to configure the mac and then it recognised the wireless keyboard.
Seems this is a problem with the new mac/OS

  • Screen corrupt 2010 Mac Mini HDMI (Static/Snow/White Noise)

I've just upgraded my 2010 mac mini to Lion, this is connected to a projector via HDMI to a Denon amp. Before the upgrade there were no issues the picture was completely clear and was usable in all resolutions.
Now that lion has installed the display is not usable, all I can see is 99% static and a corrupt row at the top of the screen where the menu bar can be just about made out.
Nothing has changed to the setup other than installing Lion, if I use screen sharing I can see the desktop happily, the OS is fully responsive.
I haven't yet tried to connect it to another monitor as I don't have a spare, I'll attempt this over the weekend, has anyone else experienced this issue?

I've got a similar issue and seems like a few others also have problems as well
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3196192?tstart=0
My Mac Mini wont boot to HDMI and Screen Sharing wont link in since Lion upgrade......
A makeshift solution is unplugging the HDMI during boot up, give it 30sec's - 1min...plug it back it and then it should come up.... works for me for now.....
hopefully someone has a more permanent solution or mac solves the issue ASAP....
    Cheers

  • Mac Mini FIrst Installation Blues... Help Required

Hi ,I have recently purchased a new Mac mini. I want to install it as a file backup server and inhouse intranet web server with 20 users inhouse. my Network is as follows i have a dsl connection to my place and it terminates on a netgear router through which i send network addresses to all clients via DHCP.i also have a web site which is hosted somewhere in US. Can i map it to my server for email and webhosting. (this is not very important)
What settings should i do on my server in DNS part?
How can i have fully qualified DNS.?
    Regards,
    Waps

What settings should i do on my server in DNS part?
The chances are you're going to end up configuring a DNS server on this machine to handle queries for your LAN clients (that's the only way you'll be able to use private LAN names for your machine), therefore you should enable and configure the DNS service and configure this machine's network preferences to use 127.0.0.1 for it's name server.
All other machines should ultimately be configured to use this server's LAN address for their DNS server (which is something you can just change once in your DHCP server), but don't worry about that until you've got your server up and running.
In this process, make sure your server has a static IP address (e.g. 'Manual', not 'via DHCP') that is valid for your network, but outside the router's DHCP pool. For example, if you're using 192.168.10.x for your network, and your DHCP server is configured to hand out addresses from 192.168.10.2 through 192.168.10.100 then it's fine to give this machine a static IP address above 192.168.10.100 - it'll still be valid for the LAN, but won't conflict with DHCP clients.
How can i have fully qualified DNS.?
That's a loaded question if ever I heard one
The term 'fully qualified' (the FQ in FQDN) just means that you're specifying both the host and the domain parts of the domain name (e.g. in the case of 'server.example.com', 'server' is the host and 'domain.com' is the domain).
If you're only concerned about local clients connecting to this machine then your domain can be pretty much anything you like - since it's private it won't affect anyone else. Common examples include things like 'company.local', 'company.lan', 'company.private', etc.
(note some people have an almost religious sentiment about what private domain names should/should not be used - just pick something that works for you).
Once you sort out your private domain name, getting your FQDN is just a matter of choosing an appropriate hostname. You might choose something generic like 'server' (or 'server1' if you expect to add more servers over time). Some people prefer to choose groups of names such as breeds of dog, Disney characters, etc. - again, the point is you should choose something that works for you.
Combine your host name with your domain name and you have your FQDN, even if that's something like pluto.company.local.
The only thing I would say on choosing hostnames is to separate the service(s) from the machine. By that I mean don't necessarily call this machine 'mail' just because it's going to become your mail server. It would be better off named something generic ('server1', 'minnie', etc.) and you use DNS CNAMEs to map services (e.g. 'mail', 'www', 'ichat', etc.) to the specific machine.
That way you don't get sidelined into thinking 'mail.company.lan' is only the company mail server, and users don't get confused as to why they hit that address in a web browser to get your web site.
It's also not the case that you have to worry about your public services at this time. Even if this machine does become your corporate web server (e.g. 'www.company.com'), that doesn't mean that 'www.company.com' has to be this machine's FQDN - it's entirely valid (and common) for the public hostname to be completely different from what the machine thinks its own name is.

  • Mac Mini Late 2009 support white Apple Remote?

Just got a refurb 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running 10.6.3 to replace my G4 Mini (using Mira remote)as a Media Centre. I've installed EyeTV and the EyeTV remote works fine, but the white Apple Remote I have does not. Remotes are not disabled in Preferences - remote just doesn't register at all. This remote though does work with my MacBook as well as the G4, so no problem with that.
Do these new Minis support the old remotes? I've also just installed Boxee; any remote issues with this?

The white apple remote should work fine with any Intel Mini -- although I can imagine a scenario in which third-party products/software might interfere.
(BTW where are you finding a Preference setting for disabling an Apple remote?)

  • OS9 on Blue & White G3 Tower?

    Hello
My brother has a G3 blue & white tower. His problem is how to get OS9 to boot on it. He wants to play os9 games on it but we can't get the os9 cd to boot to install it. It doesn't even have classic installed. How would we go about this? It currently has 10.3.9 installed.
    Any ideas?
    Music Luver ♫♬

    Hi, Music -
Since all B&W G3s shipped before the release of OS 9, there are no original Software Install or Software Restore CDs for OS 9 that will work with that machine (all such CDs are specific to the model with which they originally shipped).
However, that machine should be able to boot to and use any retail OS 9 Install CD. All OS 9 retail disks have a white label with a large gold 9 on them, and came in versions of OS 9.0, 9.0.4, 9.1, and 9.2.1.
Unfortunately there was one CD released as an upgrade for OS 9.2.1 - as I recall, this disk came with the original disk set for OSX 10.1. It was intended to be used to update a Mac with an earlier version of OS 9 already on it, and is not only not capable of installing a complete OS, it is not bootable. I say 'unfortunately' because it, too, has a white label w/ gold 9.

  • My mac mini will not read a blue ray dvd, how can I fix this?

What can I do to make mac mini play a blue ray disc ?

    Hi
There is NO Mac till yet that has a Blu-Ray player. And the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray are enormous
DVD has a red laser and can only read 4,7Gb SL or about double on DL DVDs.
Blu-Ray has a blue laser and can store in between 25 to 50Gb.
You need a Blu-Ray player - I bought a PlayStation 3 as this is a very good BD-player as well as Game consol.
(No I've no good (fun) games to it - it's just my digital/BD-player)
BTW - No as far as I know of - the miniMac can not be up-graded with a Blu-Ray Player - Any one that knows better
    please correct me.
    Yours Bengt W
