Mac Mini WIFI won't connect in 10.6

Hi I have a 2008 Mac mini.  I got Snow Leapord and Installed it on my computer soon after it cam out, but there was one problem- it won't connect to WIFI.  Other computers work fine in the same room, and my own computer works fine when running windows, but won't connect in 10.6.  I have dongraded (or in my case upgraded) to 10.5.8 but am missing some of the fetures of 10.6, is there anyone else with this problem that has found a solution?

Hi Adam,
There's not really anything you can do to reset the chip. What sort of wireless encryption is deployed at your place of work? Is it 802.1x or some other enterprise level security? I've definitely seen some "wonky" things with 802.1x and Snow Leopard, it's what is deployed here at the university I work at and support. If it's something more basic like WPA or WPA/2 or worse... WEP then you can try:
Deleting the saved wireless network location
Creating a new network location
Removing any keychains associated with your credentials for the network
There are ways to "reset" the network software but it's pretty invasive and that's only a last resort. The fact that it works at another location just fine would tell me that there's no hardware/software problem.

  • Mac Mini - Wifi Issue - Not Finding Established Network

Purchased and tried to setup a late 2012 Mac Mini (2.3 Quad-Core).
    Current Wifi Setup
    - Cable Modem into Airport Extreme.
    - Airport Extreme (Base) is pushing to (2) Airport Expresses.
    - (1) of the (2) Airport Expresses is underneath the desk where the Mac Mini is located.
    - The devices currently on the network include: (1) MacBook, (1) Apple TV, (2) iPads and (2) iPhones. Everything is connected to the network and running properly.
    Issue
One of the first things I attempted to do when I started up the computer, was join my home network. I searched for the network, found it and entered in the password. The Mac mini would not accept my password (the password is correct), claiming either password was incorrect or the connection timed out. I went to the Airport Utility and noticed the Mac mini was not locating/finding the Airport Extreme (Base), but was attempting to connect to the Airport Express underneath the desk. An important note the Mac Mini and the Airport Extreme are approximately 20 feet apart.
Here are some the methods I used to attempt a fix:
I turned off the Mac Mini Wifi and reset all (3) routers.
I updated the firmware of all (3) routers, reset them again.
I updated the OSX to 10.8.2
I ended up loading the Airport Utility on my Ipad and taking it back to where the Mac mini was located. From the attached picture, you can see on the bottom the Ipad correctly showing the Network and the on top show Mac Mini still searching for the Network.
I ended up hooking the Mac mini though Ethernet using the Airport Express underneath the desk, which is a fix however that an issue if the wifi is not working.
I’m currently at work and will have a chance to work on the computer this evening, does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this issue?
    Thank you in advance.

  • Mountain Lion on Mac Mini - WiFi unstable for Internet Sharing

I have a Mac Mini Mid 2010 MC270LL/A previously on 10.6.8 and everything worked fine.
I have it plugged into a Plasma TV via HDMI and network via CAT6, but it also doubles as a WiFi access point via Internet Sharing.
Previously WiFi was secured via WEP, I don't recall if 10.6.8 had anything stronger, most likely not, otherwise I would have gone WPA2.
I have now done a clean install of 10.8. ie erase hard drive, boot from USB and lay down a clean install of Mountain Lion.
Software update downloaded a new Firmware, which has also been applied and rebooted.
Now I've set-up Internet Sharing, used same SSID (maybe should have picked a new one in hind-sight), but secured via WPA2 - the only option.
Previously my Macbook Air 13" MC965LL/A, had undergone the same clean install treatment via wipe, then boot from USB and install 10.8.
The Wifi worked flawlessly with Macbook Air on 10.8 connecting to Mac Mini on 10.6.8 (Secured via WEP), no drop outs, connected even after sleep.
Even the power nap feature worked really well, I was impressed that when I open the lid on the Macbook Air, I had emails already waiting for me.
Now with the Mac Mini on 10.8, it's a really sad state, constant WiFi dropouts, my File Sharing disappears, Screen Sharing stops, it's a real pain.
I'm hoping it's not the new firmware, I guess I'll find out when I restore to 10.6.8 and see how it goes.
Anyone else have issues with Mac Mini WiFi on 10.8 ?

    Hello, give this a try...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

  • After upgrading to iOs7, my wifi won't connect!!!

I did the most recent upgrade to iOs7, and now my wifi won't connect at my house. My two ipads, computer, and AppleTV all work perfectly, but my phone will not connect. I'm getting the error, "Unable to join the network (insert network name here)." I have tried to reboot my phone, as well as resetting the Network Settings. Please help!!!!

The new operating system seems to have an issue with apostrophes. At least when it comes to wi-fi.
Check out your device name. If it is called something like “Claire’s iPhone” it could be the apostrophe that is causing the problem.
To change your device name go to Settings > General > About > Name. Tap on the name to edit it and remove the apostrophe. Save the change. Switch off your phone and then switch it back on again.
    Your wi-fi should be working.

I just downloaded the ios 6 on my iTouch 4th gen, and my email won't work, my wifi won't connect, my iPod is more sluggish, and honestly I'm really frustrated. Is there anything I can do?

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • My ipad mini suddenly won't connect to wifi

My iPad mini is 2 years old.  Today it won't connect to the wifi at all.  I've tried shutting it off and turning it back on.  Then I go to wifi settings, and it shows my network and asks for password.  I know I'm entering the password correctly, but it says *incorrect password*.  I've tried resetting the ipad, I've tried resetting the network, I've tried closing out all apps, turning the ipad off and on, etc.  My laptop is connected and my smart phone is connected, so that's not the issue.  I don't know why the ipad is telling me the password is incorrect!  What can I do?  Any help would be appreciated!
PS - I have a brand new iPad mini here for my son for Christmas.  I'd rather not have to give it to him today but I'm about ready to!

As of yesterday I have the same issue with an iPad Mini bought in November 2012. I have tried resetting the network settings - no good. I have done an entire factory reset - no good. I have restored from previous backups - no good. I have reset to factory and set up as a new iPad - temporarily OK, then added some apps back - no wifi again.
Today I have been to an Apple Store who could connect the iPad to their wifi OK, came home, connected OK for a few minutes and then back to no wifi again.
It is not the router that is the problem, in the house are iPhone 6 plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5S, iPad Air, Macbook Air, Apple TVs, and other bits of kit that are all successfully connecting. All iOS devices are on 8.1.2.
This problem has effectively bricked my iPad mini... very not happy!!!

  • Why does my mac mini wifi connection drop off?

After an idle period my WiFi connection on the Mac Mini drops off and needs to be clicked on & modem selected to connect back on.
No other devices on the network are affected in this way. iPhones, PC's, iPad, & android tablets have no problems staying connected.

    Could be due to interference

  • Mac mini wifi issues

Had my Ipad mini for about a week. At first, the internet connection over my Airport/time capsule( which I bought a couple months ago, so it should be the newest generation)  appeared to be fine  although, I noticed  that the signal bar was always a single to double bar (if that's how it is called). Now, from time to time it even fails to connect.
I am now in my living room in front of my mac mini set, which is itself connected to the internet over Airport/time capsule. The Airport is about 20 meters (abt 65 ft) away. The Wifi signal of my mac mini shows full capacity. My Ipad mini signal bar...it just says" iPad".  While  (when) connected I also have issues with iPad's ITune Wi-Fi sync. Connected by cable, checked the sync over wifi, removed the cable and Ipad disappeared from the Itune screen. I reset the Ipad, connected and did the whole procedure with Itunes and the iPad icon sticked to the itunes screen for a while but after about an hour disappeared again.
Now the ipad won't even connect.
When this thing works, it is a wonderful item. When it doesn't, it is a source of frustration. Can anyone help to solve this connection problem (resetting won't work) ?
    thank you.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • HP 6520 wifi won't connect

Just took a 6520 out of the box, trying to set it up/print to it from a windows 8.1 computer, after returning a 4620 printer that had the same problem.
Ran the setup software. Setup software can't even manage to figure out what wireless network the computer it's running on is connected to - useless.
Printer can find the wireless network, and when using the wrong password, won't connect, citing wrong password.
When I use the right password, it just fails to connect.
I've rebooted my router, rebooted my computer, rebooted the printer. No good. Print doctor software is useless as it can't even find the printer.
I've turned off MAC filtering on my router, and disabled Windows Firewall. Nothing.
I have an epson printer that has no problem connecting, and every other wifi capable device I own can connect to my wifi with no problem, from both Android and apple phones to tablets to four different PCs and laptops to my freaking nest thermostat. Why can't my printer manage to just work over wifi?
I do not have a USB cable for the printer (it wasn't sold with one), btw, so trying that is out (besides, I bought this as a wireless printer, not a wired printer).
    Help please.

    Hi MattMihaly,
    Welcome to the HP forums!
I see you have a Photosmart 6520 and a Windows 8.1 computer that don't seem to want to talk to one another. I'm sorry to hear this, but I will certainly do my best to help!
I would suggest you start by following the steps for Windows 8 in this 'Unable to Find Printer' Error Message Displays on the Computer During a Wireless Network Installati... document (make sure to follow the Option two: Connect with the Wireless Setup Wizard under Step five). If that doesn't resolve it, please try the steps under Your printer has never worked over the network in the HP Wireless printing center.
I realize you may have tried some of these steps, perhaps all of them, before but often trying them in a specific order is what makes the difference
Let me know how this goes for you!

  • Mac Mini keeps losing network connection

    Hey,
I have a Mac Mini 1.1 running 10.6.8, which I use as a headless media server at home. It connects to my BT Infinity 3 router via ethernet cable, and the Wifi is disabled. I connect to it remotely via dns through dyn.com. Other products sharing the network include 2 iPhones, an MBP and a windows laptop.
    The problem;
Every few days, the Mac Mini will dissapear from the network and cannot be reached either through the shared devices menu or through Remote Desktop. Only a hard reset of the Mac brings it back. Can anyone help me identify what's causing this problem?
    Thanks,
    Tim

This normally happens when your neighbor and you are using the same WiFi channel. Try changing the default channel in System Preferences -> Network.

  • Mac Mini Wifi went from really bad to impossibly slow with Mavericks

Is there anything I can do? I really need to use WiFi given my location. My Lenovo Laptop gets about 15 MBPS with speedtest.net but my Mac Mini in the exact same location barely gets 1 MBPS and that's after timing out about 3 times. This is completely unusable!  HELP!
Note, I am not using anything bluetooth and I have a wireless USB mouse and a cabled USB keyboard.  I even turned bluetooth off. THe USB mouse and keyboard I regularly use with my Lenovo and they don't cause it problems.
I use this as a development machine (XCode) for iOS development and do a tiny bit of sound recording with Garage Band, otherwise it gets very little use. I recently upgraded it to Mavericks.
Are there any diagnostics I can use or anything I can do to improve my WiFi?
    TIA

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or your computer's firmware. Any change?
If possible, connect to your router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Boot in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Boot into Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

  • Mac Mini G4 won't boot; fan full blast . . .

    Hello!
I was using my G4 Mac Mini when it decided to re-boot itself, and on start-up, all I heard is 1 loud whrrring sound from the fan, a short pause, followed by continuous whrring sound from the fan going at full blast (very loud!). The screen shows nothing.
I've tried the troubleshooting steps in the Apple site but nothing seems to work. Each time I start it up, it does the same thing.
A few months back I'd the unit repair under warranty by Apple (replaced logic board). So it's quite frustrating to have it down again - and now it's out of warranty.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Mac Mini G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Mac Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It's perhaps telling that the problem occurred after the system forced a reboot. That tends to suggest there's a significant fault - likely hardware, since if the issue was with MacOS it would not be likely to cause the fan to ramp up to full speed on startup with the screen showing nothing.
You mention that you've tried troubleshooting steps, though not which ones. Likely, given that it features in G4 mini troubleshooting of startup issues, that would have included a PMU reset, but if you haven't yet tried that, do so. I would not hold out much hope that it will assist in this situation, but the power manager is the only hardware component that could cause this sort of potential issue, and the only one that can be reset by the user.
Assuming a PMU reset doesn't help at all, and since the system doesn't show any display, it's not worth trying to boot from the original install disk to run the hardware test since the system isn't even managing the power on self test, thus won't move on to loading MacOS. At that point, I'd say you should take the mini to an Apple store if you have one in your location, or to an Apple authorized service provider for them to give you an idea of what is wrong and what it would likely cost to repair it.
If you don't want to do that, the only option is to open the system and examine it yourself. The problem with that, however, is that there really aren't any user-servicable parts inside so other than checking that everything is correctly connected and properly seated, there's really not much else you can do.
