Mac mini win7 western digital passport

Hi,
I have a Mac mini recently (4day) and I installed Win7 ultimate 64 on one partition. So far all OK.
I attached a Western Digital Passport external HD 1T; FireWare 800.
Win7 connection driver instaled OK.
I see the HD in the "Printer and device" menu.
With Win7 Explorer i cant find it.
Have a suggestion?
Tank you.

Hello, what Format is the external drive?
Does OSX see the drive fine?

  • Western Digital Passport and itunes.

I recently got a Western Digital Passport external hard drive in order to put my itunes music onto it, so it would not take up so much space on my macbook. I found it relatively easy to move all my files the first time, but then as soon as I downloaded something from the itunes store, it put it onto my computer. Since the artist was the same as some music I already had, it did not recognize that I did not already have it, so I could not simply move the new music onto the Passport.
I was wondering if there was some kind of sync feature for the Passport to macs, because I know there is for windows. All I want is for my music to continually go to my Passport, and not take up space on my laptop.
    Thanks!

If the WD drive isn't plugged in, iTunes doesn't know where your library is, and hence can't properly add the new music files where they should go. The passport MUST be plugged in to the mac before you start iTunes or a new library will be created and your new music files will go in to THAT library.
The simple way to correct this is to take the files you added that did not go where you wanted them and put them on your desktop from the folder they are residing in (if you're not sure where they are, just click 'Get Info' on the tracks in iTunes and it will tell you where the real files are). From there, close iTunes and plug in your WD drive.
Reopen iTunes now and make sure in your preferences that the music folder on the WD drive is selected as your music library location. Then make sure 'Copy files to iTunes Music Folder' is checked. Now drag your music files on your desktop in to the iTunes window. iTunes will then copy those files over to the WD drive music folder and add them to the iTunes database.

  • Western Digital Passport 320 GB on macbook

Does anyone have any experience in using a Western Digital Passport _320 GB_ model as an external HD with an intel macbook?
Do you power it with 1 or both usb ports?
    Had any problems with it?
    Would you recommend?
    Thanks, .B.

I have the 160 GB model, and it works fine. I only use 1 port to plug it in. I have two partitions- one for data, and one for Time Machine.

  • Western Digital Passport 250Gb external drive and MacBook Pro

    Hello,
Has anyone with the 15" 2.2ghz 120Gb hd MacBook Pro able to connect this Western Digital Passport 250 GB external drive to only 1 USB port and has it working?
I intend to buy both of these hardwares, but was told that I may need to get the extra Y-cable that can connect to 2 USB ports of the MacBook Pro since only 1 USB port may not have enough power to work the WD external drive? The WD drive comes with only 1 "standard" USB cable.
    Thanks.

I've got the 120GB passport and it's worked when I plugged it into the right-side port. But I prefer my connections on the left (to keep room for my mouse) so I got a powered Kensington Dome hub that I run thru my left USB port and have plugged the HD into the hub and that also works.

  • Western Digital Passport not mounting

I have a western digital passport that I have used a couple of times.  Today I was transferring my music and it said there were corrupted files in my music, and all of a sudden the drive will not be recognized anymore.  I don't know what to do?  I have been reading everything online.  I have tried checking disk utility and it does not appear.  Tried checking the hard drive on another computer and it didn't pop up.  Please all suggestions are helpful.

The Western Digital Passport drives have a reputation for being power hogs. Your Macbook USB port might not be providing enough power to run the drive. This especially might be the case if you are running off of the battery only. Your PC ports might be giving slightly more power that is enough to run the drive.
I have a portable Simpletech drive (120Gb) that actually comes with a Y cable that plugs into two USB ports on my Macbook. This provides enough power to run the drive without needing a separate power adapter. The Western Digitals typically don't come with this Y cable, but one is offered. You can buy one off their website for about $20 that should allow you to use the drive with your Laptop. It's lame that everyone else provides such a cable for free while WD charges, but that's the way it is.
good luck with getting it to work.

  • T41 not recognised USB Western Digital Passport 2.5" Ext HDD

My T41 used to worked fine with my WD 2.5" ext HDD. For the past 3 months, do not know what happen every time i plug my ext HDD it just not recognised. When i plug this ext HDD to other computers, it just work absolutely fine.
    Can anybody help, please.

I had same issue with same type of pc and USB Western Digital Passport. Problems was on laptop usb ports that had gone broken. Laptop didnt have warraty anymore so i had to connect USB-DISK to docking stations usb port that is still working.
Other solution is to buy usb2 PCMCIA adapter.
Mouse worked on laptop port but no harddrive so i think its was some power issue that laptop usb cannot give enoght power to run harddrive.

  • Need help. 2012 mac mini 5.1 digital audio not working only stereo out. How can I get 5.1 digital audio?

I have a 2012 mac mini with a mini toss link to toss link cable connected to an a/v reciever (Sunfire, grand theater 3) capable of dolby digital and dts. I am not getting  5.1 digital audio only stereo audio. Midi setup format 48000 hz 2ch-16 bit integer. In speaker configuration stereo is the only option all others are grayed out. How can I get this to work? Please help.

You should set up as 24bit integer.  Toslink does not support
multi-channel encoded over a 16bit link.  Just not enough
    bits available.

  • Western Digital Passport (a little confused)

I purchased a new WD Passport essential as a portable external hard drive. I clicked and dragged my important folders over to it and it appears that everything from my bookmarks to iTunes library is gone even though I can go through applications to find them. For instance, I can go to my documents folder and find my iTunes folder and my music will be there but when I try to enter iTunes I have to redo the service agreement. All my bookmarks when I open Safari are gone. Can I restore my computer to a time before I did my click and drag to get everything back?

I think I'd disconnect the external drive and do this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Western Digital Passport works with 12" Powerbooks!

i just purchased a WD passport 250GB for my 12" 1.5GHZ powerbook running on 10.4.11 and it worked. I have read about the powerbook's lack of USB power to power-up to mount portable HD's. but most of them owned a 15 and 17" powerbook
Well i'm happy its working on my machine Just want to spread the word

Actually you can Boot from a USB external drive!
    here are the steps:
    1. Partition the drive Correctly
for intel macs: make sure in the options you set the Partition Map Scheme to GUID Mode
for PPC macs:make sure in the options you set the Partition Map Scheme to Apple partition Map
Go to: Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > select drive > partition > options
    2. Create a clone of your HD using Carbon copy cloner or super duper or something similar
    3. Reboot your mac and hold down the option key when the system is booting back up. This will let you choose your boot drive on startup. Choose your USB drive and continue. You’ll find that the system boots a lot slower, but that is expected of course. With any luck, your backup is an exact replica of your system.

  • Mac Pro with Western Digital VelociRaptor 600G ?

    Hello people,
Has anyone tried upgrading the HDDs in the Mac Pros with the new drive from WD
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=821
From what i see, as the last model, this will probably not fit natively due to a lower pin arrangement that will not match the Mac Pro SATA slots with the factory HDD sleds. Am i wrong?
If you have this drive how does it compare?
    Thanks

    Hi-
That drive of this following model is plug and play in the MP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD6000HLHX/
A pair of them in a striped RAID are as fast as the fastest SSD.
October 5th, 2010 -- For less that the price of one 256G SSD, you can buy two 10K 600G Velociraptor HDDs. If you stripe them (RAID 0), you get the same sustained transfer speed as the SSD. But, alas, the SSD can process 14 times as many small random transfer requests per second. Then again, considering you are getting 5 times the storage of the SSD and 3 times the transactions per second of the fastest 7K HDD, it's is an interesting option for a boot volume.

    Welcome to the forum!
I doubt that this is possible, you need a drive with SATA interface for your T60.
To each his/hers own, but with today's prices of SATA drives, why even bother...
    Take a look at this:

  • Copy my time machine files to a western digital drive

I am having trouble with my time machine and I need to copy my backups to a Western Digital Passport with Windows format - how can I do it

Create a regular storage / data drive on a new drive and transfer the files manually from within OS X, not TimeMachine.
see here how to correctly format and use such a drive as well as other options and information.

  • Cannot use Western Digital HDD with Pismo?

    Good evening,
I am trying to use a Western Digital Passport 250GB external HDD USB with my Pismo, but it mounts the HDD, but says it is unreadable and then forwards me to the Disk Utility. It seems the HDD but I can't partition it or anything. So, I partitioned it on my G4 iMac, on which it works perfectly, and then removed it and tried to use it on the Pismo; again, no luck! Is this a fool's errand or am I doing something wrong? Please advise as I need more than the 20GB internal HDD.

    spcmiller,
I am sorry the suggestion did not work but underpowered USB ports on Mac portables is an issue with external USB HDs. You have something else going on which I cannot answer.
I would suggest posting in the Powerbook G4 (15-inch Titanium):
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=129
The Titanium also has USB 1.1 ports, has issues with USB HDs, and the forum has more activity than the Older Powerbook Computers. Also, if you wish, perform a search in the Titanium forum for 'USB western digital' for many posts. I saw none that matched your experience. When you post, I would explain that you have a Pismo and were sent to this forum for the reasons I mentioned; you can even link to this thread if you wish.
Sorry I could not solve your issue.

  • Western Digital External HD and Time Machine issues

I have been using my 500 Gb Western Digital Passport drive for the past few months, though I purchased it almost a year ago. I had been using it as a back up drive using Time Machine, though I also put other files on it at times. Recently it had been having issues backing up, and now it hasn't been recognized by my Mac. It hasn't had this problem before and when I tried to repair it, I received this message:
    Verify and Repair volume “disk1s2”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I'm worried that I won't be able to retrieve the data. I also don't want to reformat the drive if I have any other options. Please let me know what I can do, thank you.
(I'm also pretty sure that my drive is pretty much a goner and that I won't be able to retrieve my data).

Thank you, I'd seen some things about Disk Warrior and wasn't sure. I'll have to scrape money together I suppose.
Here is an image of the issue I encountered: Problem.
Yes, +*Invalid B-tree node size+* is one Disk Utility usually can't fix, but Disk Warrior often can.
Disk Utility can detect it, but not Finder, so I guess I've got no hope unless I use Disk Warrior, and even then it's only a possibility.
And so if I end up having to reformat the drive, I should probably use a different external for back-ups?
Depends. If these are your only backups, that's safest. If you have secondary backups (see below), I'd be inclined to give it another chance.
Any brands you recommend? (I'm getting tired of all these externals dying out on me, but then, technology does that sometimes. ;))
A lot of folks say WD's are junk (including those at CarbonCopyCloner), and we do see a lot of reports here, but they also sell a lot of them, so it's hard to tell whether they really fail more often than other makes. But other folks say they've used them for years without undue problems.
I've got a Seagate about 18 months old, and a LaCie Rugged (portable) about 6 months old; OWC and Iomega also seem to get good reviews.

I've learned over the years (mostly the hard way, of course ), never to trust my backups to a single app or piece of hardware: no app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later.
Like many here, I keep both full Time Machine backups, plus a "bootable clone" on a separate external HD. I use CarbonCopyCloner, many use the similar SuperDuper. That gives me the best of both types of backups, plus of course a completely separate, independent backup.
CCC is donationware; SD has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling. Either is easily found via Google.
And/or, see Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.
