Mac Mini with Major Problems

I'll try to make this short, but it is a looonngg problem.
About one month ago my Mac Mini began having problems when I boot up.  The computer would freeze on the opening page where I put in my password.  My wireless keyboard and trackpad would not work.  This would be interminent at first but progressively got worse.
I spent hours on phone tech support.  Finally realizing that would not help I drove the 100 mile round trip to the local Apple store for a Genius bar appointment.
The first appointment (there have been 5 - meaning 500 miles) resulted in them doing a clean install of Lion.  I took the computer back to the office and guess what, the same problem.
I drove back to the Apple store, the Genius did some more work and proclaimed it fixed.  It was, for about 3 days when everything started again.
More time now on tech support.  One more trip to the Apple store.
This time they kept the Mac Mini for about 4 days are replaced the logic/mother board. 
I got it back to the office on Thursday. Everthing works great.
Until today.  I boot the computer, it gets to the screen that has the apple on it - then nothing.
I manually power it down and reboot.  Same thing.
I've set up ANOTHER appointment at the Genius bar tomorrow. 
My question: can I demand that they replace this machine.  Between work and home I have 2 Mac Mini's, a Macbook Pro, a Macbook Air and 2 iPhones.  I've never had this type of problem.  I'm really tired of this.
I purchased this in February so it is in warranty.

    There are a few things that are confusing in your question.
    As far as I know, you dont have to install Time Machine on this OS as it is already installed for you. You only need to connect a hard drive to your computer via firewire or usb, click on the Time Machine icon, Open Time Machine Preference in the drop down menu and select a disk: your connected hard drive.
    You can of course reformat this connected device, partition it into a few volumes to organise data if you so wish.
    I find it strange that your mac's hard drive is divided into two volumes... perhaps this was created through bootcamp?
    You can access the configuration of your hd through Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilities.
    Clicking on one of the icons on the right hand panel will bring the details of the contents of your hardDrive and volumes. From there you can decide to erase a partition, reformat etc....
    If your hd contains more than one volume, and one of them is empty, you could decide to remove it. Back up all your important data before doing so.

    I have installed OS X Yosemite on a Mac Mini with a "homemade" fusion drive.  The update seems to have completed, although the following problems are evident:
    Missing menu items from the menu bar, including the apple menu, notifications, time machine and others
    Menu bar items return after booting non-apple software (MS Office, for instance), but disappear again once apple apps are running (App Store).  You can mouse over these menus, even though their respective icons are not there, and access the content within the menus.
    iTunes crashes upon launch; app store launches, but no content loads.  Additionally, the app store menu item under the missing apple menu location, shows 4 software updates are available, but cannot load the app store content in order to access the updates.
    Safari loads, but enters a continuous loop of "A problem occurred with this webpage so it was reloaded."  Then, a application quit notification window appears, stating "Safari Web Content quit unexpectedly."
    Lots of spinning beachball now that was not happening prior to update.
    I've tried resetting the machine numerous times.  Nothing seems to fix the problem(s)
    The machine seems to recognize the fusion drive in system report, and all files are accessible in finder, so I don't think the fusion drive is the issue.
    Any suggestions, pointers, fixes?

  • Mac mini with a 24" display or a new iMac 24"?

    Hi,
    Since Apple releases the new iMac, and at the same time, updated the mini, I'm wandering where my heart should go.
    I like the iMac, a little bit more powerful, better video card and not sharing memory with main memory, better BTO (bigger HD, faster HD too, memory, etc) iSight and mike, and so on so on. I have not seen one yet, but I'm still puzzled by the glossy screen. Many article I read said that it is a like or not based on personal taste and environment you put it in. I bought a Sony display 2-3 years ago, which I returned, because of the glossy screen. The images were very clean and very fun too work on, but I could not endure to see my face in the screen continuously. That's what I'm afraid about the new iMac.
    So far so good, I read the article on http://www.macworld.com that compare the new mini C2D with an iMac, and while it is less performant it is still a good performer. Only a few points below the iMac. So...
    Choosing a mini with a 24" of my choice with the same resolution as the iMac will cost me around the same (maybe a few hundred $ less), but I'll have a smaller/slower HD and not a dedicated video card. I'm wandering if the larger screen resolution will affect the mini performance? Sure, for the HD space, I can use an external HD on firewire. Maybe even boot from it and use the internal and slower disk for backups (like TimeMachine for instance).
    I do not play game, or very occasionally, I'm doing iLife/iWork stuff, and Internet surfing. I want the larger screen, as I like to have spaces to play with, but I'm afraid the mini will suffer the higher resolution.
    In the long run, the display will stay mine, when I ever decide to change my computer, while buying the iMac mean I'll drop the display and buy a new one. There's pros and cons to all of this...
    So I'd like to heard from people having the new (or even older) mini to let me your impression of what you feel about this.

    If you are not able to actually examine an iMac carefully before you buy, the risk that the glossy screen may not suit you is a real issue which has to be considered. Imagine that you bought one and found it to have the same problem as the Sony display you tried and had to return?
    Ultimately, the actual performance of the system is remarkably unimportant in most situations. The majority of users and uses would not show markedly different operability between a brand new Mac Pro and older G5, even though in terms of specification and benchmarking, the two are like chalk and cheese. The fact is that while the Mac Pro would be greatly faster, OS and software, not to mention the user him or herself, are all quite inefficient.
    What that means is that the difference in performance between the iMac and the mini is certainly measurable, and in use would show itself in some ways (the iMac would run smoother for example) but without the ability to sit them side by side, as a user you'd really never know. Bearing in mind that the new minis are way faster than the old G5s which were themselves screamingly fast when they were in production (and still are), it's hard to imagine that a mini would fail to impress.
    And since the actual performance of the system isn't all that crucial, what IS vital is to ensure that the system you buy is usable. The devices that matter most in that respect are the bits you, as the user, interface with. Keyboards and mice are reasonably cheap and easy to change, but displays are not when they are fixed and integral to the system.
    The downside of the mini is twofold: Firstly that the internal drive is 5400rpm, thus relatively slow. In reality this really doesn't matter all that much, particularly not if you go for 2Gb RAM. It's been criticized for it's speed, but on the other hand, it's the same as the best laptops, users of which don't seem to have problems with the drive speed. It can be got around of course with a fast external drive, used to boot the system.
    Secondly, the integrated graphics - not because that's really limiting in any absolute sense (except for gamers) but because as time goes by, more and more of the top-end software is likely to exclude systems with integrated graphics from their minimum specification list. There aren't many like that yet, and it's hardly likely to be a widespread problem, but it does mean you have to consider what software you want to run as part of the equation.
    If I were in your situation, I'd not consider spending money until I had looked at the iMac and given myself some time to work with one. The fact it has a glossy screen doesn't mean it WILL have the same problem as the Sony display had, and slight changes in the ergonomics of your desk with the iMac on it rather than the system with the Sony display previously may mean that even if it did prove reflective, it may be far less of a problem (or more of course). I would look to buy the best system with the best specification that fit within my budget (after all, it has to meet your needs for some time, even as they change), thus if the iMac screen was good, that would be the system I'd go for. If there were any sense that the reflective properties of the screen were going to be a problem, I'd dismiss it as an option immediately, and focus on either the lowest cost Mac Pro if one of those were within the budget, and if not, a Mac mini with bumped up RAM and your choice of screen.

    HI All,
    I was going to purchase the mac mini that was geared up to work best with OSX server however that option is now no longer available and the mac mini's have downgraded slightly in terms of quadcore processors and 2tb harddrives.
    We run a small design studio, file sharing is becoming a large hinderance on workflow and I thought OSX server sounded like a good solution for someone with little knowledge of the area. We have four imacs, and three macbooks. Our team is growing fairly quick and that number should double next year.
    Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Just get the latest mac mini, add some external storage with a Thunderbolt 2 connection and that setup will work great for filesharing.
    You will get gigabit network speeds and since it's Thunderbolt 2 the mac mini will have no problem to serve those files across the network.
    Make sure you get external storage with a decent RAID setup like a Promise Pegasus for instance, and invest in a good back-up solution.
    Then clone your mac mini OSX Server setup daily towards the RAID and you're good to go!
    Get a Mac Mini with an SSD or Fusion Drive and 16GB of RAM. That'll keep you going for the next couple of years easy!

    I own a mac mini Quad Server 2.0 i7 and I use it for audio production.  It's great but I need to travel with it. I was hoping some form of screen sharing could be useful using the macbook air to control the mac mini.  Therefore, I'd be using the stronger processor of the mac mini but would still be using the keyboard and trackpad from the air. 
    My two problems: 
    1.  I can't depend on wifi to make this happen. Wifi is not always available when travleing.  What would be the best way to configure a LAN connection?
    2.  The less lag the better for screen sharing.  Which apps are fastest?

  • Mac Mini with OS 10.4.9 running Appleworks 6

    I am running a Mac Mini (Intel) OS 10.4.9 and have installed Appleworks 6 which I had from my old G3. The problem is, my microsoft mouse will not scroll up and down on a document. Now then, this new Mac Mini is my wife's and she needs the scrolling feature. I also have the same Mac Mini with Appleworks 6 installed and the mouse scrolling feature works fine. This did not come easy as when I first got my Mac Mini, I spent a lot of phone time with an excellent tech rep at Apple. He made it oh, so simple. I just can't remember how he did it.
    My current call to Apple tech support came to the conclusion that I need to take my wife's Mac Mini to a "Apple Genius Store" (if I can find it) and have them try and get the mouse scrolling to work. By the way, I have tried the iWork trial thing and perhaps I'm set in my old age, but I do like Appleworks 6 much better. Thank you for reading and considering my question.

    There's nothing at all wrong with preferring APpleWorks and wanting to continue using it. It's a bit unfashionable these days, but there are many people who have discovered how powerful, flexible and easy it is to use and continue to use it despite the development of alternatives!
    Of course, it does have the drawback of not being intel native, so performance on intel-based Macs will be relatively poor in comparison to iWork, but if that doesn't cause you any problems in use, then it's purely a matter of what you want to use not what anyone else thinks is appropriate!
    That said, what exactly is the problem? Can you scroll by clicking the scroll arrows and dragging the scroll bar, but not by using the mouse wheel?

  • 2014 mac mini dual monitor problem

    I just brought a mac mini (Late 2014) i have two displays monitors connected, one HDMI to DVI. and one thunderbolt to DVI. I can have both thunderbolts connected and the problem its the same, when back from sleep ,one monitor doesn't turn on. i have to disconnect one and then both work, it only happens when the mac goes to sleep. on cold restart or turning the mac on, this problem doesn't occur. any help.

    I have this same problem too. I purchased the Mac Mini with the intention of running dual monitors. I'm using the HDMI and mini-display/Thunderbolt to DVI. I've also tried MiniDisplay/Thunderbolt to HDMI and I'm experiencing the same problem as angelfromfullerton. Whenever it tries to wake from sleep, it can't decide on monitor arrangement and keeps flicking between the two, making the OS unusable and forcing a reboot... EVERY TIME. I've also experienced the issue once or twice on a cold boot. It doesn't matter which Thunderbolt port is used either.
    I'm going to have to return my Mac Mini unless this problem is fixed asap.

    I have a 3th Gen Apple TV and a late 2012 mac mini with IOS 10.8.3
    - Connected thru HDMI to an ASUS monitor
    - Apple tv connected with wire
    - Mac Mini connected wireless.
    - I can see the Airplay icon on the screen
    - I can select my apple TV on the icon pull-down menu (first time it asked me for apple TV password)
    - Once selected, my monitor resolution changes and apple TV goes to a blank screen. On the pull-down menu, my apple TV papears selected and the option "match desktop size to:" is selected for my Apple TV.
    Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?
    Additional Info:
    - I can stream from iTunes music with no problem
    - From an Air (on same wireless network) I can mirror my display. And form iPad and iPhone I can stream video and music.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
    Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
    Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
    Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

    i m trying to connect a lcd daewoo 32 to a MacMini
    this works with dvi/sub 15 but there is no access to zoom ,panorama or 14/9
    only 4/3 and 16/9 are available
    the lcd give access to these options when connected to a dvdplayer with yuv
    i bought a dvi/yuv adaptator for the macmini but there is no image on the display
    should i connect the mac mini with dvi/hdmi link to access
    Has anyone successfully connected a lcd with these options ?

    let me try to be more specific
    the problem is to use front row on the mini with a 16/9 display (32') for films
    with the dvi/yuv adaptator , it seems that the mac ( or the card) can not send this signal . Too bad , the tv with yuv connection accepts zoom , 14/9 ...
    with the dvi/vga adaptator , the signal is ok on tv , at least for movies (1280x1024) , but the tv (plugged with vga ) does not give access to zoom , 14/9 so movies are "small"
    not overscanned , but small
    so i'm looking for somebody who plugged this successfully ( mini front row and movies in full screen ( or max available) without deformation of the image
    Another option could be dvi to composite adaptator ...but going out from the mini in dvi to display on a 1366x768 LCD does not seem to be the best

    as far as I can see, I have resolved it...
    Just so I didn't write over my functioning disk in the Mac mini, I took it out and put a spare one in.  (Would have saved me going back to the Apple store to get it re-imaged if it did fail.)
    I created a Mountain Lion installer on an 8GB USB stick, and first installed 10.8.4 (the latest at the current time) on my MacBook Pro... it worked fine, so I knew the installer stick had no problems at all (that's one thing to rule out of the list of potential causes).
    With my spare hard disk in the Mac mini, I then went to try to install 10.8.4 on it, with my 16GB non-Apple RAM in it.  It failed as usual in the way I expressed originally.
    I then just swapped my 16GB RAM for the original Apple 4GB RAM (2x2GB sticks) which I put back in the machine, and I tried re-installing.  No problem whatsoever - it installed perfectly.
    It's the RAM!  Even though my RAM works perfectly once installed, the Apple OS installer refuses to proceed if Apple RAM is not in.  I put my 16GB RAM back in after installing the OS and all is fine.
    I'm quite surprised Apple has done this.
    Have you changed the RAM?  Let me know if it's the same problem or you have some differences.
    I assume it will install fine if I put the orignal HD back in, again if I have the original Apple RAM in of course.
    PS.  Also to note, the point where it failed in the installer with my 16GB RAM in, with the original Apple RAM in it took an incredibly long time towards the end of the bar moving across the screen; it says "5 minutes remaining" for at least 15, maybe 20 minutes, but gets past it eventually, then does a reboot to continue its install.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.  
    These steps are to be taken while booted in safe mode.
    Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. 
    Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands. 
    Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply. 
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: 
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) 
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. 
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. 
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign. 
    Step 1 
    Triple-click the line of text below to select it:

  • Need Mac mini with 10.7

    I cannot purchase a new Mac mini because the printer and touchscreen monitor I want to use do not have the supporting drivers for mountain lion (10.8), or the companies' tech support says things like "it should work" not "it has confirmed functionality."  Therefore, I feel forced to look into used or refurbished Mac minis with 10.7 or 10.6.  Apple's refurbished page currently shows only two Mac minis for sale  - both have OS X server, which also comes with Mtn Lion.  This leads me to my question:  Is my best bet to find a used or new-in-the-box (but sitting on a warehouse shelf) Mac Mini from 2011 or so with 10.7?  Apple is of little help with only two refurbished machines with Mtn Lion.   Two potential problems come to mind - slower dual core versus quad core processors, and 2.0 USB ports instead of 3.0.  I wish I could just buy a new Mac mini with the 10.7 as this OSX has confirmed compatability with the touchscreen and printer drivers.

    Also, do you see where you can upgrade some of the components on the right side of the screen at gainsaver.com?  What do you think about having a 3rd party company like this install, say a hard drive (they don't list whether any of them are Fusion or SSD) or RAM?
    Yes, ebay has many used Mac minis but it has been hard to find the one with the quad core that I want with the older OSX. 
    We don't want to run Parallels or Fusion, etc.  We'd like to just stick with Apple and products that are compatible.
