Mac Mini wont network with my other Macs

Hi all,
I have a 3Com 8port router(HUB)networking my Mac-Mini, 8600, G4 & Dell via DSL modem. After my DSL modem bit the dust I've noticed the computers wont communicate with each even though I can see their icons all on my network. Shouldn't they network even if the DSL modem is out? Or is the DSL modem needed to send out IP addresses to the CPUs in order to communicate? I'd like the CPUs to network instantly without the beach ball swirling for an hour...LOL
Thanks for your help
Web dude

Hi Web dude-
Take a look at this document:Mac OS X: Troubleshooting a cable modem, DSL, or LAN Internet connection. It should be helpful.
You are correct that the router part did assign ip addresses.
You can set up one of your Macs to share an Ethernet connection. See the document Creating a small Ethernet network for more information.

i have an 08 apple desktop and my ipad mini wont connect with my itunes and i cant find updates to fix this what do i do?

From Apple's website and printed on the box the mini came in:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
    Download iTunes at www.itunes.com/download
You will have to update to at least OS X 10.6.8 or later, otherwise known as snow leopard.

  • Refresh rate set wrong, mini wont work with TV anymore

I have a Mac mini hooked to my conventional TV. I tried setting the refresh rate to 58Hz. I wanted to see if it made the picture any better. The image lost all vertical sync and the image rolls very fast. I thought maybe a confirm dialog box would switch it back to 60Hz after a set time. It didn't
I tried putting it to sleep an waking it. I pulled the plug and restarted it. I reset the PRAM. The mini always switches to the bad refresh rate after start up.
I hooked the mini up to my 23" Cinema Display. Then I can use it fine. However, there was no way to channge the TV settings. I hooked it back up to the TV and it still wouldn't work.
So now I have a mac mini that wont work with a TV. The only thing I want to use it with. The only thing I can think is a last resort. To erase the hard drive and re install Mac OSX from scratch.
Is there anything I can do short of reformating the thing? There really should be a timed out dialog box to confirm the setting, al la (dare I say) Windows XP.

This is a real Catch-22 that has caught a bunch of us. If Apple wants lots of naive users to hook these up to their TVs as media centers, they need to have the kind of recovery mechanism you suggest. In the meantime, when I had the same problem and posted, there were lots of useful suggestions in this thread:

  • Help my Mac mini wont work with the airpot

I have got the Mac mini Intel Core Solo G5 model and ive got a ibook G4 my G4 works great and fine but my mac mini does not. I connect to the base station fine useing the drop down bit on the taskbar in finder and enter the password and it connects. But when i do network assistant and it asks for me to eneter the password again it just basicly frezzes for a min then says invalid password when i know that it is the write base station password. It did work once but froze again and said could not connect. and when i go into the airport utlity it can't descover the base station even though it says it is connected with a full signal, im doing the excatly same things i did with my ibook but it just wont work. Please can someone help me and tell me what i have to do or give me some support this is my last hope as apple aren't intrested. I will be very gratful!

The software update was for Intel based Mac computers and does not specify Core Duo or Core 2 Duo:
    AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001
This update is recommended for all Intel-based Macintosh computers and provides compatibility with AirPort Extreme base stations and networks.
This is the update that generated a fix at www.macfixit.com because some folks have been having issues with connection with their internet provider and some people have had issue with their airport systems just shutting down.
It was part of an auto update that was received. One of my Macs is a MacBook Pro Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo) and this upgrade (download) was part of the update check that is automatically performed.

    Hello sportyjenny19,
So your iPod never appears in the Devices section of your iTunes library correct? Have you tried resetting the iPod with it still connected to your PC?
What happens when you try manually putting it into *Disk Mode* ?

  • My ipod wont work with this other computer

my computer that had my ipod music and information on it crshed so i went to go use my ipod on my moms computer. she also has an ipod but doesnt use it much so i uninstalled itunes the re-insatlled it under my information. but every time i plug it in i cant do anything with it but charge it.
??how do i update music onto my ipod through this computer??

You really didn't need to uninstall then reinstall iTunes to get your iPod to work, nor do you need to install the ipod software again.
What happens when you connect the iPod to iTunes? Is it recognized in the source list? Do you see any messages? Do you have your iPod set to transfer songs manually?

  • Networking with AirPort

I'm sure this has been asked and answered millions of times. If someone could just direct me to a comprehensive FAQ I would be grateful. Here's the issue:
I have an eMac 1.25ghz, an iMac 700 & an iMac 600. All are in the same household and use AirPort cards via a Netgear router. I just want to network them together wirelessly. I've followed the directions in the Help Menu, but with poor results. The furthest I could get was the iMac 600 recognizing the eMac, but I couldn't transfer any files.
Obviously, I'm not doing something essential, but I don't know what. The Help Menu keeps directing me to iDisk as the networking mechanism, which I've tried to use, but without much success. It seems an unnecessary detour to the seamless integration I envision.
Right now I just use a flash drive to manually copy files from machine to machine. Intuitively, I feel there must be a simple way to network these Macs together via AirPort without having to use iDisk.
Thanks for your patience. I wouldn't have bothered anyone with this, but I've spent several hours trying to "read the manual" and now I need some expert help.
    Glenn

I don't think it matters, but I use a Netgear WTG624 v.2, which was bought off the shelf at Best Buy. Set up was a snap. I just followed a few online instructions in the Netgear software and the AirPort cards did the rest. (Occasionally, one of the Macs will lose the wireless connection and the AirPort icon will go gray. I've learned simply to unplug the router for a minute, then plug it back in and let it reset. This restores the connection.)
As for setting up a wireless network with the other Macs in the house, I simply turned them all on and under the AirPort icon in the toolbar clicked on "Create Network." Each automatically created its own network with its own name. Then I clicked back to the Netgear network.
Next I clicked on "File Sharing" on each computer (System Preferences in the Dock, then the Sharing icon). I didn't make any other changes.
Once this was done, on each computer I went to "Go" in the toolbar and clicked on "Network." This opened a window, and after about 10 seconds each Mac would could "see" the other two on the network.
Now this is where I got stuck before, but finally figured out (d'oh!). Double clicking on another Mac in the network will ask me for a login and password. What threw me off is it automatically provided my login name, and I couldn't figure out why my password (which is the same on all the Macs) wouldn't work. Believe it or not, this stupid step cost me hours of aggravation.
What I didn't realize is I had to use the admin login for the Mac I was trying to access, not the one I was logging in from, which is the login name automatically provided. Since each Mac has slightly different login names, I had to jot them all down, then erase the login name that was provided for me and type in the proper admin name for that computer. Then the password worked and I gained access to the other Mac.
From there is was a simple matter of dragging what I needed from one Mac to the other. I was even able to install large applications without having to haul out the disks.
I knew it would be simple, but as always the first time is always hard.

  • Mac Pro will connect to internet but not network with other systems

I have an iMac in my studio reception and a Mac pro and Macbook in my office. All three systems can connect to the internet but the Mac Pro has stopped networking with the iMac. However the iMac can network with the Pro. I have an ethernet cable connection to the Pro (no wi fi card) and I have a wireless router on the iMac which has enabled me to connect the Pro to other systems through wi fi. I also have a PC laptop and the Pro can connect to it via wi fi. Everything was networking properly several weeks ago and as far as I am aware I have not changed any settings. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this annoying little problem.

  • Mac mini server networking and DNS setup help

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this. I'm working at a small business where I'm the only guy with any IT experience at all, but I'm new to Macs and OS X (<1 year) and being a server admin so please bear with me.
We just bought a Mac mini server as we are expanding from a bunch of workstations and Google Docs. I've just gone through the installation process, but nothing else is on the server, no user data at all, so if the answer is to reinstall from scratch, I can do it.
We'd like the mini to be a file server, print server as well as the gateway for the internet. I realize we could stick to our router and have the server as another node in the network, but we also got a Time Capsule for backing up the server and will locate it in another room to be another wireless access point there.
When going through Server Assistant, I didn't really know what to name the machine so I used corp-Server.local for the Current Hostname and corpserver.private for the DNS Hostname (though i actually use a 3-letter company acronym instead of "corp").
However, i realized after setup we'd want to access the server externally by name, so I changed the DNS hostname to server.companyname.com in the Zones tab of the DNS section of Server Admin (edited primary zone name, changed Nameservers entry for both primary and reverse zone).
I don't know what else I need to do though because there are loads of instances where corpserver.private still shows up, like in the Open Directory section of Server Admin (which btw always hangs when I open it) and the Contact Info of users (eg. user email is [email protected]). I also had trouble earlier using Server Preferences and Server Admin either not connecting or not recognizing my login, but that seems to have abated.
I guess my problem is, where else do I change the DNS hostname? Or do I have to change the DNS hostname back to corpserver.private (in Server Admin)? That way, I think at least everything will be consistent, but would I be able to still configure it somehow so that externally, we could access the server by the server.companyname.com URL?
Also, can the mini be a wireless router for the office? As mentioned before, we want to cut the existing wireless router out and use the mini instead (and use the Time Capsule as a wireless bridge).

So the ISP<->router connection can have a dynamic IP address, but the router<->server one should be static? I guess that means I have to set the IP address in the router. I hope I can get access to it. I don't suppose it matters which one I set first?
An IP router does not assign addresses.
A DHCP server does assign IP addresses upon receipt of a DHCP request from a client.
Some routers (and many firewall routers) do include a DHCP server.
A box with a static IP address does not need to send a DHCP request; it has a static address.
You'll need to ensure that the IP address pool within the DHCP server does not overlap the addresses that are manually assigned to your local hosts; the static IP addresses on your LAN.
[Here is an overview of the pieces involved here, and some of the typical terminology|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/275].
I hate to belabour the point, but I just want to clarify: in my setup where ISP<->router<->server<->clients, where the server is the only machine connected to the router, which one should be the local DNS server? The server, right? So if the DNS server is turned on in the router, I should turn it off? Or do I need both (ie. router for its LAN (to server), and server for its LAN (to clients))?
So to confirm, the configuration includes (probably) a modem, a router (firewall) and a router (Mac), and then the rest of the (local) show? That is not the simplest configuration, and it's Particularly given that Mac boxes make expensive and slow routers.
The usual configuration is ISP>firewall>LAN and the LAN is usually built from WiFi, wired connections and switches. Within one subnet (which is typical) any host inside your firewall is connected on the LAN, and can communicate (directly) with any other LAN client. The firewall is configured as the gateway; that's the default route for outbound connections.
One more thing that's bugging me: I still don't understand why I couldn't connect to the internet when I plugged in the Ethernet cable from server to router. Even if I was using DHCP to get a dynamically allocated IP, shouldn't it still have worked? I'm worried that I'm going to set up everything as it should be but the connection still won't work.
That's likely because you're trying to use the Mac as a router, and that takes specific configuration steps. It's easier to have ISP>firewall>LAN, and have the Mac OS X Server box and the rest of the stuff as peers on your LAN. If you really want to use the Mac as an IP router, look around for setting up static routes on Mac; there are postings around for that.
If your data is more valuable and your security preferences and requirements are higher, then you may want a firewall with a DMZ, and put your web-facing boxes over in the DMZ. If you're serving stuff to the web or a mail server or such, it's possible to get breached, and a breach means folks can potentially get further into your LAN. With a DMZ, they're somewhat more isolated from your LAN.

  • Mac mini wont boot os x

My mac mini will not boot into os x. When I boot up the mac mini it network boots. I went into os x using the option key and changed network boot to my hard drive in system preferences, but I still get the same problem. When I type mac-boot in the firmware it says "not enough memory". When i use the option key to boot the hd takes a long time to show up, about 15 seconds. When I run os x the fan kicks in immeditly. I dont get any errors when running an extended test on the system test cd.

When I type mac-boot in the firmware it says "not enough memory".
Is your Mac mini booting into open firmware? Or did you do that on purpose? If it's happening automatically, I think yoy may want to call AppleCare Support. There could be something significantly wrong with your Mac mini.
