Mac mni crashed or something!

I was running the Mac mini in my car for about two weeks. I was driving today and my niece was watching the Incredibles on the computer. I went in a store to pay a bill and when I came out my son and her say that it just froze in the middle of the movie. My son (who has his own mini) pushed the power off button and turned it off. I then tried to turn it on and got nothing NOTHING! Except that the light comes on and the fan. Could it be the DVD that is stilll in there may have ruined something? I bought this used off of ebay three weeks ago and it worked like a charm for those weeks. Very pleased with it. I have tried resetting the PRAM and doing various things. All that happens is that the light comes on along with the fan. ANY IDEAS? HELP!
Richard

Try briging it to a local Apple Store. They might be able to help you.(However, I do Caution that they might reject service becasue it was purchesed through a 3rd party.) Also, Try to see if you can get into Open Firmware:
Restart, and then imediatly hold down Command + Option + o + f and see if that works, then type eject cd and then wait if that works, type mac boot . then your done.

  • Mac Pro crashing on shutdown (and some other things)

The following behavior began about 4 or 5 days ago...
Mac Pro crashes/freezes every time I shutdown (or Restart).  Some process seems to be not quitting on shutdown - the screen goes blue and I get the spinning beachball. It'll just hang like that indefinitely.  To get it to shut down, I have to hold the power button for several seconds.  After starting up again, the machine *mostly* runs fine, but there are some apps/services that either just don't do anything, or causes the Mac to hang, or get into a funk state. These other things that seem to destabilize it include:
Apple menu > About this Mac: nothing happens (no dialog)
iTunes: dock icon just bounces, iTunes never launches
System Prefs > Accounts > Login items: System Prefs hangs. Force quit allows Prefs to open again.
Some apps/services also cause things to hang:
Activity Monitor: quitting some processes causes Actvity Monitor to freeze
Clicking SOHO Notes (tab alonmg the edge of the monitor) results in spinning beachball
Rolling over Linotype FontExplorer in the Dock causes the Dock to freeze, FontExporer never opens
There are probably other things that would make it hang, I have not gone looking for them all
    System details:
Mac Pro 4,1 .66 ghz, 8 GB RAM
    Mac OSX 10.6.8
Dual monitors, two internal hard drives (internal; drive A, internal drive B), multiple external FW hard drives attached
I have already done the following:
Disk Utility: Verified and Repaired Disk Permissions
Disk Utility: Verified Disk, Repaired Disk - this found errors, and suggested reformat/reinstall
I have already booted off internal drive B and ran Disk Utility, then restarted and booted off internal drive A again.  No difference.
I have Time Machine backups on an external 1 TB FW drive.
Late last night, I restarted, inserted my original Snow Leopard DVD, launched the MacOSX installer. Recovered a prior system by choosing Utilities > Restore System From Backup, selected a Time Machine backup a few days old (a day or two prior to the problem begining) on the external 1 TB FW drive, and initiated the restore.  The estimated restore time was about 5 hours, so I went to bed and let it run.  Got up early, and checked: it said the Restore operation was successful.  I was relieved.  But the same conditions continued - launching or rolling over the items listed above cause the same freeze/crash/hangs.  Hangs on shutdown, only way to kill things is the power button.  So now I'm disappointed.
I do have multiple backups of my data files across the external hard drives, but this is a large machine with a lot of stuff on it, and I'd really like to recover things wholesale, rather than having to reconstruct accounts and other things.  Before I go to bed tonight, I'm going to take another shot at recovering the system from a Time Machine backup - this time, I'll pick a backup that's from a full week before the problems started (the idea being that maybe the backup I picked last time was not far enough back from whatever incident caused all this).
If the week-old Time Machine backup works, great. But if not...any suggestions?
    Additional data points...
Nothing new was installed or updated (as far as I know, and I generally pay attention) in the days prior to the problem.
The last thing I recall doing on the computer before the problem began, was burning a DVD (using Toast) - something I do all the time. After that operation, I tried to shut down, and it froze.
The primary internal hard drive partition (internal drive A) seems to be the only one that's having trouble: if I reboot off of internal drive B, the problems do NOT occur - no hang on quit, etc.
That suggests it's not a hardware problem (logic board, etc.) but is something about the System on drive A.
It *could* be bad sectors on drive A - but I have some questions about that...
When I did the full system recovery via the MacOS installer (pulling the old system from Time machine), does the destination drive get reformatted? I don't recall being asked the usual partition/formatting questions.
When the installer does a system restore, does it do any integrity checking on the target drive, or does it just blindly lay down bits?
Does this "freeze on shutdown" (and related behaviors) sound familiar?
    Any tips/suggestions to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

    More info and a question...
Did another full restore (from a Time machine backup on an external drive) last night - picked a backup from from 10 days ago, long before things became problematic.  Still having the same issues.
So, I'm thinking the next thing to try is a low-level reformat of the internal drive(s) and then restore again.  I have a couple questions about the finer points of that...
I'm following the instructions in this KB document: Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system.
Inserting my original Snow Leopard DVD, launching the MacOS installer, restarting, in the installer choosing Restore System from Backup.  It appears that there is no re-formatting of the target drive in this case - it just over-writes.
    My questions...
The contents of the target drive are going to get wiped and overwritten anyway. Do I have anything to lose/to risk by reformatting FIRST (using Disk Utility), then booting off the install DVD and restoring then?
My 1 TB internal drive is partitioned into the primary 750 GB partition (which is the problematic one) and a secondary 250 GB partition (which boots and runs fine).  The secondary partition has some data I would prefer not to lose.  I assume that if want to do a full reformat of the internal drive, that means the whole drive - both partitions - will be wiped (that is, I cant reformat just one partition on a single physical drive without reformatting the second partition).  Correct?
I suppose I can back up the data that resides on the second partition to an additional external drive (I have extras) if needed - not a huge deal.
Do my new partition sizes need to exactly match the sizes of the original partitions?  Neither is completely full, but I want to make sure that I will be able to restore the system and contents of the primary partition even if the new partition size is not bit-by-bit the exact same size as the old partition (I assume the new partition size just needs to be large enough to hold the backup - correct?).
So....I'm looking at the following sequence:
Back up the data I want off the secondary partition to an external drive
Boot off the Snow Leopard install DVD
Run Disk Utility and reformat (fully erase) the internall 1 TB drive
Partition that 1 TB internal drive to (more or less) the two previous (about) 750 GB + 250 GB partitions
Restore a recent Time Machine backup (from an external FW drive) to partition #1
Reasonable plan?  Anything I'm missing here?  Any other steps I should take?
    Thanks for any help.

  • What is causing my Mac to crash during the sleep mode?

    Hello!
I would to have your help on this situation that i am having for a month or so...  Ok... it started about a month ago, I turned it on and all of the sudden, it shut down, then rebooted on its own... (actually it rebooted like 3 or 4 times before running the system) I thought that it was odd.  I had my Tech to look over and see what was causing to crash and all... he could not find anything then we all decided to leave it running all time... so we did.  a week or two later, it just crashed when i woke the sleep mode and it went on the usual route as crashed and rebooted two or three times before going back to normal.
sound familiar to you guys?  after that happened, we turned off the sleep mode and so far, it is doing good...  decided not to update the system's Security software because it may have something to cause the mac to crash down...
    the mac is  2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 Gb 667 MHZ DDR2 FB-DIMM, running on 10.6.8
    appreciate your help on this.

One more thing....  it makes weird sounds as well... very high pitch sounds that you hear in movies where UFO flying by while it is doing the rebooting...

  • My Mac keeps crashing--a newbie needs help

Lately, my Mac keeps crashing.  It's an iMac, with the most recent updates of Yosemite.
I'll be working, I might have several things open, and then suddenly the screen will go black and I'll have the notification that it shut down and push to restart.
It has happened more than several times now, and I can't remember if it started doing it before Yosemite or not.
Not sure how to search out the problems, it's my first Mac.  Are to many things open?  There's no crash report when I restart.
    thanks!

Mac users often ask whether they should install "anti-virus" software. The answer usually given on ASC is "no." The answer is right, but it may give the wrong impression that there is no threat from what are loosely called "viruses." There  is a threat, and you need to educate yourself about it.
    1. This is a comment on what you should—and should not—do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet and gets onto a computer as an unintended consequence of the user's actions. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the computer, or who has been able to take control of it remotely. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it.
The comment is long because the issue is complex. The key points are in sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user. Internally Apple calls it "XProtect."
The malware recognition database used by XProtect is automatically updated; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
☞ It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
☞ It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
    3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
☞ It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
☞ A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
☞ An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
Apple has so far failed to revoke the codesigning certificates of some known abusers, thereby diluting the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. These failures don't involve App Store products, however.
For the reasons given, App Store products, and—to a lesser extent—other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandbox security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
    4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
    5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they are not, and never will be, complete protection. Malware is a problem of human behavior, not machine behavior, and no technological fix alone is going to solve it. Trusting software to protect you will only make you more vulnerable.
The best defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and Internet criminals. If you're better informed than they think you are, you'll win. That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know when you're leaving the safe harbor? Below are some warning signs of danger.
    Software from an untrustworthy source
☞ Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, doesn't come directly from the developer’s website. Do not trust an alert from any website to update Flash, or your browser, or any other software. A genuine alert that Flash is outdated and blocked is shown on this support page. Follow the instructions on the support page in that case. Otherwise, assume that the alert is fake and someone is trying to scam you into installing malware. If you see such alerts on more than one website, ask for instructions.
☞ Software of any kind is distributed via BitTorrent, or Usenet, or on a website that also distributes pirated music or movies.
☞ Rogue websites such as Softonic, Soft32, and CNET Download distribute free applications that have been packaged in a superfluous "installer."
☞ The software is advertised by means of spam or intrusive web ads. Any ad, on any site, that includes a direct link to a download should be ignored.
Software that is plainly illegal or does something illegal
☞ High-priced commercial software such as Photoshop is "cracked" or "free."
☞ An application helps you to infringe copyright, for instance by circumventing the copy protection on commercial software, or saving streamed media for reuse without permission. All "YouTube downloaders" are in this category, though not all are necessarily malicious.
Conditional or unsolicited offers from strangers
☞ A telephone caller or a web page tells you that you have a “virus” and offers to help you remove it. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
☞ A web site offers free content such as video or music, but to use it you must install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "downloader," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one.
☞ You win a prize in a contest you never entered.
☞ Someone on a message board such as this one is eager to help you, but only if you download an application of his choosing.
☞ A "FREE WI-FI !!!" network advertises itself in a public place such as an airport, but is not provided by the management.
☞ Anything online that you would expect to pay for is "free."
    Unexpected events
☞ A file is downloaded automatically when you visit a web page, with no other action on your part. Delete any such file without opening it.
☞ You open what you think is a document and get an alert that it's "an application downloaded from the Internet." Click Cancel and delete the file. Even if you don't get the alert, you should still delete any file that isn't what you expected it to be.
☞ An application does something you don't expect, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
☞ Software is attached to email that you didn't request, even if it comes (or seems to come) from someone you trust.
I don't say that leaving the safe harbor just once will necessarily result in disaster, but making a habit of it will weaken your defenses against malware attack. Any of the above scenarios should, at the very least, make you uncomfortable.
    6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it—not JavaScript—in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a padlock icon in the address bar when visiting a secure site.
Stay within the safe harbor, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
    7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" (AV) or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they are all worse than useless. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free security apps in the Mac App Store—nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial AV products?
☞ To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. This technique is a proven failure, as a major AV software vendor has admitted. Most attacks are "zero-day"—that is, previously unknown. Recognition-based AV does not defend against such attacks, and the enterprise IT industry is coming to the realization that traditional AV software is worthless.
☞ Its design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere. In order to meet that nonexistent threat, commercial AV software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
☞ By modifying the operating system, the software may also create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
☞ Most importantly, a false sense of security is dangerous.
    8. An AV product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," has the same drawback as the commercial suites of being always out of date, but it does not inject low-level code into the operating system. That doesn't mean it's entirely harmless. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An AV app is not needed, and cannot be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful, if at all, only for detecting Windows malware, and even for that use it's not really effective, because new Windows malware is emerging much faster than OS X malware.
Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else. A malicious attachment in email is usually easy to recognize by the name alone. An actual example:
London Terror Moovie.avi [124 spaces] Checked By Norton Antivirus.exe
You don't need software to tell you that's a Windows trojan. Software may be able to tell you which trojan it is, but who cares? In practice, there's no reason to use recognition software unless an organizational policy requires it. Windows malware is so widespread that you should assume it's in every email attachment until proven otherwise. Nevertheless, ClamXav or a similar product from the App Store may serve a purpose if it satisfies an ill-informed network administrator who says you must run some kind of AV application. It's free and it won't handicap the system.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have all the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
    10. As a Mac user, you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither can you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. Navigating the Internet is like walking the streets of a big city. It can be as safe or as dangerous as you choose to make it. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

  • Mac Keeps Crashing - Menu Bar Disappears and Nothing Will Run

    I'm having major problems with a macbook, 2.2Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 160Gb Hard Drive, 10.5.2
I'm not sure if this is a software bug, something to do with the fact that I've recently installed 4Gb RAM, replacing 2Gb that I installed a few months ago, or possibly something with parallels desktop running Vista, I recently installed several vista updates.
Basically, there are several ways in which the computer keeps crashing - I've pretty much figured out how to make it crash now. When it crashes, the menu bar disappears, sometimes leaving the shadow beneath it and the right hand icons, sometimes not, and the dock becomes useless - nothing will run. I cant use expose etc or switch between windows. Pressing Cmd Alt Esc to open the force quit dialogue box bring up an empty box - implying that nothing whatsoever is running! I have to physically shut down the computer using by holding the power button and start it back up again. When it starts up, it sometimes continues to refuse to work until i restart it again. There is no message whatsoever about having restarted or crashed.
The computer will work fine for most processes, but the things making it crash are:
    1. Entering Time Machine (I've had to stop backing up and disconnect my time machine drive now)
    2. Using parallels desktop - I run windows vista, and it'll work fine until I launch any applications that are more complicated than just solitaire or freecell - windows messenger and powerpoint will cause the crash. OSX won't be working, but windows will continue to work fine - I can finish what Im doing and shut it down, although keyboard input no longer works. I then have to restart OSX.
    3. Running DVD Player in Front Row has now started bringing up the grey screen of death and telling me to restart.
Obviously these things can be avoided - but I can't back up my computer, I can't watch DVD's without crashing the computer, restarting and then going straight into DVD player, and I can't use the copy of Vista on Parallels that I've just spent a fair bit of money on.
I've tried taking out each of the 2Gb Kingston RAM cards, which came brand new and sealed, to see if one or other is possibly faulty, but they are both causing the same problems. I don't have the previous RAM cards to hand to test.
Has anyone here experienced anything like this before, or can anyone help me?

    Hiya Pricerob,
Your problems seem to be exactly the same as the issue I'm having when it happens. Can I ask how much RAM you have installed, and how frequently the problem occurs? I'm curious also because I'm planning on buying an imac soon, and was planning on installing the 4Gb of RAM I have into that when it arrives - the £300 apple charges for the upgrade is a little excessive.
I mentioned that I've tried to download the latest firmware update, but it keeps crashing upon completion. Have you had any issues like this?
Another really obscure thing I've found regarding the firmware update is that it saves an install file to my Applications/Utilities folder. This file would cause my mac to crash. Every time I opened the utilities folder, it would crash. I moved it to the desktop, and had major issues where the computer would crash immediately upon startup because the file was there, and the same problem once I managed to get it in the trash. It was only by accessing the macbook in target disk mode that I was able to delete the file and use my computer as normal again.
Anyway, considering the problems I've had, would anyone say it's worth risking installing the RAM into a new imac when it comes, considering that the problems with my macbook are ongoing even when the RAM is removed and I can easily reinstall the operating system on a brand new computer, or should I leave it and buy some more?

  • Mac Projector Crashes When exported From Flash CS5.5

Something strange that i noticed, when i had exported a presentation for a Mac,
    on a 64 bit windows 7 using flash cs5.5.
the applicaton gets the paths of a few swfs from an XML file
and loads them one after the other.. there is a small bit of interactivity.
.. tested this projecter on various versions of MAC, it crashes often, crashes earlier if i switch applications.  what follows here is a part of a report that was generated on an  OS X 10.7.3,
works fine if the projector is exported from flash cs5.
i need it to work when exported from flash cs5.5.. any suggestions on what i need to change in my application so that it works when exported from flash cs5.5?

Looks like it was a memory problem with the jvm.ini file.

translate..... you had Windows (version?) installed...
on its own hard drive (bay #2 or #3?)
on same drive as OS X (and OS X was and is running Leopard and not SL or Lion)
Only CD #1 I can think of is XP SP2?
Well, that is what backups are for, system restore image, WinRE CD (WinRE3 is latest).
XP: reinstalls I've read pretty much had to be done twice a year to keep Registry and system running properly.
Malware? maybe not current or something.
Was low on disk space and now has issues
Not sure why "it" won't be accepted.
With Mac Pro, pull all the drives anyway other than the one with Windows and use Windows 7 Pro (dual cpu sockets, 64-bit).
Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 with EFI32 do have issues with booting and installing 64-bit Windows.

  • Why did my Mac Pro crash on Mountain Lion?

    Hi there,
My Mac Pro crashed twice yesterday.  No logs were created in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ for those as far as I can tell (nothing with the 28th as a date).  The computer just turned itsself off, and restarted.
I repaired the boot drive by launching from a Snow Leopard disk.  I ran Techtool diagnostic tests yesterday on the computer and everything passed (I skipped the boot drive surface scan, and only the 4 internal drives were connected.
Today, it turned off again, there was a grey screen I'd never seen before telling me that my mac would restart because of a problem, and boy, it did.  It wasn't the typical 'kernel panic screen' I saw rarely in the past.  This happened at 3:30 pm my time.  There's an "AvidBinIndexer crash log that is timed at 9:22 am, but none at 3:30 pm.  (Note that I've never looked in the diagnostic reports directory so I may not know what I'm looking at).
According to the files in the Diagnostic reports directory I've had crash logs since the 13th for Adobe, Avid, File Syncrhonization, qmaster, and Soundsource (for a total of 19 files in that directory, nothing before the 13th)
    Now some background:
I run a Mac Pro 3,1 with 12 gigs of ram, an eSata card, ATI 5770 graphics card.
I have 4 internal and 6-7 external drives attached (4 esata, 1 firewire), 1-2 usb.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion on Jan 24 from Lion, however, this problem occured a few times before.
I had a USB backup drive that had volume problems, that I had to backup / reformat / repair, and so my first suspicion was that it was to blame.  But no, today it rebooted and that drive wasn't connected.  All other drives were however, and on.  It occured just after I woke the computer from sleep.
Any ideas on what's up?  What can I post here that could help someone diagnose this?  Any things to try to further narrow down the issue?
    Thanks!
    Rick

what a long post....Apple, btw, does not read this stuff, so ranting, raving, and complaining here might make you feel good, but it does no good at all. That being said, I, too have a Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon with 6 gigs of ram and an nVidia 8800 GT graphics card (not as good as yours, alas) and I've had no problems at all with it. Yes, it doesn't have Thunderbolt, but maybe we Mac pro owners will get lucky and someone will come out with an adapter (probably not). No, you probably don't have to throw away your Mac Pro, but if you do, I'll take it, for a small "recycling" fee >:-) That was a joke.  Yes, the Mac Pro's future isn't quite clear, YET. Hopefully that will improve very soon. As for not being able to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Don't worry about that too much, Nobody is forcing you to do that.  Your Mac Pro won't quit working if it isn't installed. From what  I've heard, you should give the new OS a chance, and wait to get it, in case there might be some bugs, or stuff not working with the new OS, which has been known to happen. Yes, we Mac Pro owners don't like being treated like mushrooms-kept in the dark, and being fed......... but Apple is Apple and it will do what it does, and there is nothing you or me can really do to change that. All I can say is....trust, have faith, be patient, go for a walk, do something else to take your mind off of this problem. IF apple decides to drop the Mac Pro for good, and that's a big "IF", I think they will anger a whole bunch of people
which isn't good. However, that hasn't happened...YET. Let us hope that it doesn't

  • Mac pro crashing on shutdown

    HIya,
I've got a 2.66GHz Quad intel xeon Mac Pro, with 8gb RAM, OSX 10.8.4, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120. I use it as a 'server', running a copy of Filemaker Server and Account Edge. It's set to auto shutdown at 8.30 in the evening, but randomly, when I get in in the following morning, it hasn't shut dpwn properly (the screen is blank grey, with the spinning 'daisy-wheel'.

    Any thoughts would bemost appreciated.

  • Mac Pro Crashing And Restarting

Can somebody help me. My Mac is crashing and restarting randomly and it getting worse since I tried to clean it up with Tech Tool.

Look in Apple System Profiler (Apple Menu > About this Mac > ( More Info )...
... Memory pane. All modules should be listed as OK, and all should show as their proper size.
Your Mac has Error Correcting Code (ECC) RAM. Single-bit errors are detected and corrected on-the-fly, but will cause the status to change to something other than OK. More than a handful of corrected errors in a month is troubling. Double-bit errors generally cause a Kernel Panic.
Console.app should be in your Applications/Utilities folder

  • Why Does My Mac Mini Crash So Much?

I have a Quicksilver PowerMac and a Mac Mini, and they both have (substantially) the same software configuration - the latest Apple software. The Quicksilver is solid as a rock. It never crashes.
The Mac Mini crashes frequently - I'd say an average of twice a day. Many different applications are in the foreground when it happens, but it is usually Safari. I suspect it might have to do with the memory that I substituted. I put in a 1 GB memory module - Kensington from Fry's. Memory tests say it is fine.
How can I track this down? Does Apple help?
    Brian

First off, I would like to thank you all for attempting to help me out.
Next, I'd like to correct my original message. The memory is "Kingston", not "Kensington". (I was working from memory, and that doesn't always work so well.)
I think I'm going to go with the suggestion to swap the memory out and observe what happens. I was hoping that someone would come up with a method of finding a "smoking gun" - something that would positively identify the memory as the culprit or eliminate it as the problem. I guess it doesn't work that way. Last night (all night long), I ran REMBER, a GUI "wrapper" for the "memtest" command line program, and it found nothing. I suspect I can run it for a weekend and get the same level of information.
I hope Andy's right about his "no quibble" comment. I called Kingston, and when I told them that I had the 1 GB PC3200 DDR, he informed me that the Mini was spec'ed for the PC2700 memory. It's my understanding that both of these are supposed to work (the 3200 slows down to 2700), but I can see the beginnings of quibbling.
    Brian

  • My Mac keeps crashing about once every other day.

So my Mac keeps crashing at random times. One was just looking around on facebook last night, and just 20 minutes ago, I was playing StarCraft 2 online. My screen goes black, with the backlight still on, and the keyboard lights stay on. The time it crashed while I was playing StarCraft 2, I believe I heard the audio skipping while the screen was black. My most recent crash report is.. Can anyone help me? All software is up to date.
