Mac Newbie trying to get a handle on photoshop pull downs

I am fairly new to osx and really love the design of photoshop with one exception: layer pull downs. When I used photoshop on a pc I could select the layer mode and then up or down arrow key to preview how a layer mode would look. I could just up arrow or down arrow and see what different looks each layer mode would cause. On the mac, I find that I have to click and drag every time. Is there a way to get the arrow keys to work? I found that after a days work my arm was actually sore from needing to constantly click and drag.
Any help would be appreciated.

They most certainly do, at least on my machine. I double checked before posting. The up/down arrows work to move through the blending modes, but you don't get previews as you cycle through them.

In the help documentation for the CVI_ActiveApp function, it states:
"If the server application is already running, this function may or may not start another copy of the application. This is determined by the server application."

I don't believe you have control over whether or not a second instance is started.

Newbie to Macs and trying to get advice on what I need to get wireless

I have just got an iBook G4 with internal wireless modem(?) and I'm looking for advice on how to get it set up for wireless connection..what to get etc
I currently have broadband through tiscali on home pc but what do I need to get to make that connection wireless?

No, you are not limited to Apple. Other routers exists - Here are some reviews. You can find others in a Google Search.
Regarding Wi-Fi (hot spots). Yes, as you have noticed, more and more public places have wireless connections. Some are secured, i.e. require a password to access. Others are not - voluntary or involuntary.
To access a network, your Airport cards needs to be "on" - to enable, go to your menu bar, and click the Wireless icon (inverted striped fan). When the menu appears, make sure Airport is set to "on". If a "wi-fi" network is present, your machine automatically connects to it (if there are multiple networks, Airport will usually connect to the strongest signal). Access depends on the presence or lack of "security". In your Airport panel, you'll see the name of the network(s) available, with a check mark next to the one being accessed. To chose a different network, simply highlight it and click. The check mark moves to that network. For commercial secured access, you'll have to pay a stated fee listed by the site. For unsecured networks (no password), you can technically have access to the Network for surfing the Internet.
Once connected, access to the Internet is a simple as starting up your browser.
One big word of caution - when you access an unsecured wi-fi connection, your machine becomes part of that network, making it potentially noticeable to anyone else on the network. Also, you may be breaking the law. Further, adequately addressing security issues is more on the front-burner now, as most machine's introduced in the past year are "airport" ready. Regardless, I encourage you to be certain you are accessing a Network legally. Also, make sure adequate security measures are in place on the Network to protect your machine's internal data from others.
Back to unsecured networks: While OS X has security provisions to prevent unauthorized access to your system, I suggest you disable any file sharing item found in your System Preference>Sharing panel. Personally, I suggest you stay away from Unsecured Networks. They are an "accident" waiting to happen.

Mac newbie trying to understand

I haven't learned to think in Mac yet. I'm trying to understand what actually happens to the files that I have imported from my memory card into iphoto and then exported to another folder on my hard drive for use in other applications or on a Windows PC. Are the files moved from the iphoto library and then tracked in iphoto or are they copied to the new folder thus creating two copies on the hard drive? Any of the above?
I am trying to avoid creating duplicates of the originals in order to save space and would like to understand this before I go much further and wind up with a huge mess. I'm thinking maybe I should use image capture to get the photos from the card to a folder and then import into iphoto so the originals would be more readily available for burning cds/dvds for use use in Windows as I will be doing that a lot. How would that work?
That's probably about as clear as mud. Anybody understand and can educate me? By the way, love my iMac.

By default (and strongly recommended) the imported photos are copied to the iPhoto library -- there is an option not to do this but it can be extremely problematic and unless you are a very experienced user it is strongly recommended that you use the default of copying all imported photos to the iPhoto library

The original is left alone unless you choose to have iPhoto delete the photos form the camera after importing (it is best not to have iPhoto do this but to use the camera to reformat the card once everything is firmly in iPhoto and the camera is properly disconnected. Once you have imported the photos to iPhoto you can delete the original that is outside of iPhoto

This will create two copies of each original and is unnecessary - it is better to export the photos you want to use and delete the exported versions after you use them.

Newbie: Trying to get data from Code Behind file to HTML file.

I am trying to use the opener link adaptive tag to open a specific page. I have the Object ID, and classID as variables in my class in my class file, but I do not know how to get that data into the opener link which is on the html page.
Should I be using session variables? If so how, I am a newbie.
Does anyone know how?

Kinda depends on your flavor/need/preference. I've done it...
* Using session variables and just writing to the page in script blocks. Not preferred in .NET-land, but definitely more of the fast/traditional ASP style. Use sparingly and with caution. Be really careful about VS.NET totally destroying your tags. It seems to love doing that (as an aside - HUGE thank-yous to the BEA engineers who altered the tags to consistenly use lower case. Really. I can't thank you enough. :) )
* Using label controls and then just populating the label with the formatted adaptive tag (this can work well)
* One of our guys did a really simple/elegant server control that takes arguments for the objectid, classid, etc. Nice for creating things repeatedly server-side and gets you by the HTML, quotes, etc. all over the place. Nice as it also consolidates the tag in a single place you can alter once.
For session variables, you'd just do something like...

Personal style, I would try to avoid using session, etc. directly on your ASPX file. I'd go with writing out the HTML through labels, data lists, etc. in your code-behind.

Mac newbie trying to figure out best internal HD configuration

I've been trying to educate myself about internal hard drives by reading some of the posts here and doing a search about RAID but unfortunately I'm still a little confused. I'll try to post my questions about what I'd like to accomplish and if these have been answered before I'll gladly go read a post if someone can direct me to the right place.
First, I have only one internal hard drive on my MacPro and I'm tired of living dangerously! I need to install another hard drive to use as a backup of my work, digital images, music, etc.
1. Can someone explain (or link me to an explantion) the differences of RAID and which one i would want for the above scenario?
2. Given my original aim with the backup disc, can someone recommend a make/model that works well as a backup? (for example i read about differences between an SE and an RE drive from one manufacturer, and how one works better in this or that situation, but it all went right over my head)
3. Is there a software application I should consider that will help me automate my backup process on a daily (nightly) basis? (I'm more than a little forgetful)

I don't use raid myself so I'll leave that explanation to others. I configure my Mac Pro with 4 drives. My main drive is my boot drive and has about 300+ gigs free. I have a backup drive for that which I use SuperDuper for backup, creating a fully bootable backup drive in the event my main drive has a problem. I only back up to that drive when my machine is "good and solid". That allows me to throw on the most recent update without much concern. If there is a problem then I just boot from my backup drive and I'm back up and running just fine. I also use the backup of my main drive for my Final Cut Pro scratch drive. I copy the files for my movies to external drives for archive when needed. For my data drives I use another set of 500 gig drives. One for data (mostly photos) and one to backup using superduper whenever I feel like it. You could automate it all with Retrospect for the data drives if you wanted to. I don't think Retrospect will make a bootable backup of a main drive. I use Western Digital WD5000KS ddrives, 500 megs each. They make another model for those wanting RAID. Set up RAID, by all means, if squeeking every ounce of speed is your goal to be sure. My setup is conservative, redundant and very safe. A simple search here or on google for RAID0 or such will turn up much info on raid configuations.

Newbie trying to get tracks to mp3 without clipping

Hi Folks, I have imported a bunch of track from a HDD recorder (as wav files) into Garageband. It's a rock band setup - drums, bass, guitar etc. I can't get the drums or bass anywhere near loud enough without clipping. If you look at the wave form of the signal it's not above 0 or even close. I tried turning off all compression I was using and all other effects and it still sounds like crap. I can get a decent mix in GB but when I try to export either as MP3 or .aif I have no volume or I have clipping. I have tried both Normalizing and not.
Please, any thoughts are most welcome. Thanks!

Newbie trying to get a flash ad swf to loop

Hello,
I am a designer trying my hand at flash animated ads for the first time and can't do what is probably the simplest function imaginable. There is a tile ad on ingoodfaithwyoming.com toward the bottom of every page. It's a simple ad but I cannot export the swf so it loops. I tried creating a new layer and putting in a go to and play (1) on the last frame but it hasn't helped. I asked a buddy who is used to cs3 and he said it is in the publish settings, I am on cs4 and can find no such setting except in the html side, which does me no good as I have to use swf for the site's system. Please help.

Hahahaha, so I tried the go to and play 1, uploaded it and so no change which is when I came here... However I never cleared teh cache for the site. Once I cleared that out it was working correctly. Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

Virgin Mac and trying to get his PC itunes onto his powerbook?

Hey everyone,
I have finally become a part of the Mac world. I have a sister and two friends that have had Mac's for a couple years, and are totally obssessed with them. I finally got my first Powerbook this week.
I was just curious how to transfer my old itunes and playlists from my PC to my new Mac? I have read numerous old posts but they all give different piece of advice on what to do and what not to do. I dont have an external hard drive....... and I dont know what version Ipod I have........ its a 20BG with a click wheel....... it came with itunes 4 and the 30GB video Ipod came out a couple months after I got it.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks a bunch, I'm looking forward to see how much better my Mac is than my old PC.

Bridge in CS5 Mac - newbie trying to keyword my 4000+ photos

I'm an old PC - PS7 user now into Mac and CS5. I thought I would use Bridge to re-organize and keyword some old photos. But I am having difficulties. The keywords I add keep disappearing from the keyword list when I go to a new folder. I need suggestions for set up. Must I put everything into one folder to keep my keyword list available so I don't inadventently make variants like 'graffiti' 'street-graffiti" etc. I see the CS5 help documentation but I can't find the Bridge help/manual. Can you suggest a book or link for me or a procedure?

Look closely at the keywords in the keyword panel. If they are italicized they are temporary and will disappear when rebooting and perhaps changing folders.
If they are italicized right click on them and choose "make persistent".

built. It can
allow you to create new pages at an existing site, but it's
not possible to
create pages from scratch and build a new site. If you're
looking for
something easy you might look at NetObjects Fusion for
Windows or Freeway
for the Mac.

If you are running OS 10.5.8 then Safari version 5.0.6 further down the page is available on this website.

You need to use the right version of Safari for the OS version you are running.

If you purchased from Adobe direct, then just go to Adobe web site http://www.adobe.com and sign in. In the Search field at the top of the Adobe home page, type in My Orders. Then follow the link to My Orders and find your order and the download files associated with it.
If there are problems in that regard, go to the following web site and download and install the free tryouts for Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 (whichever one you want) and insert your purchased serial number into those installation files to make it your working copy.

You need to clear the Java Web Start applications folder. Exactly how to do this depends on which version you are using, but here is the general idea:
1. Start the Java Web Start Application Manager. It might be in a "Java Web Start" program group in the start menu. Otherwise look for javaws.exe under the JRE path.
2. Go to the Preferences section. On mine its available from the menu under File->Preferences.
3. Go to the Advanced tab. There should be a section labeled Applications Folder Options with a button labeled Clear Folder. Press this to delete the cached applications.
Next time you access the tools, they will be downloaded again.
