Mac noob: importing 16:9 AVI movie to iMovie 5.0.2 scrunches clip to 4:3

Hello,
My name is Amanda and I am a part time wedding videographer. I recently received my salvation since I converted from a PC to a Mac. :O)
Anyway, I've been using Adobe Premiere 1.5 & 2.0 for the past year. Recently I discovered how easy it is to use iMovie 5.0.2 and iDVD.
The problem I am having is I have 16:9 AVI clips, rendered from Adobe Premiere, that I would like to import to iMovie 5 for final editing. Upon importing widescreen AVI clips, they appear scrunched iMovie preview mode. Oddly enough, on the AVI file properties (in Windows) indicate that AVI files are 720x480. That's 3:2!
Is there a setting or configuration that prevents iMovie from scrunching the 16:9 clip to 4:3?

Obviously the AVI clip isn't flagged as 16:9.
Try to open it in QT Player Pro and export it as NTSC DV/DVCPRO and flag it as 16:9.
Then use this quick iMovie import shortcut to save time and HD space (it is possible to bypass iMovie's DV import and put a .dv file straight into iMovie_project/Media -folder):

BTW, both 4:3 and 16:9 NTSC use 720x480 -- they are just scaled differently. You also have to remember that video use rectangular pixels AND that the actual active frame is INSIDE that 720x480. So you need more complicated calculations for the aspect ratios. For more info, see:

Thanks for the link. We still had a the problem, but we found a woork around. It seem that if the power point has any sound in it then it only imports the sound. So we took all the sound out and then it imported fine. Then we put the sound back in and imported that so that then we had the sound effects. Any way it works! Thanks!

  • I cannot play .avi movies in iMovie - any advice?

Hi, I cannot play or import any of my .avi movies from my camera to imovie. I can play them in iPhoto and using Quicktime, is there any way I can edit them using iMovie? My digital camera only records in .avi. Can anyone help

I cannot play or import any of my .avi movies from my camera to imovie.
Your audio and/or video compression format on these files is not import/edit compatible with iMovie '08. onvert it as needed. Casio digital cameras, for instance, produce an AVI file container with MJPEG video which is compatible with iMovie '08 and a DVI ADPCM audio track which is not.
I can play them in iPhoto and using Quicktime,
Files can be "playback" only compatible with QT applications, "conversion" compatible (i.e. they play and convert but cannot be edited), or "fully" compatible -- i.e., they playback, convert, and can be edited in their "native" compression format.
is there any way I can edit them using iMovie?
AVI files can be edited in iMovie '08 as long as the offending track(s) can be converted properly to a compatible format.

  • Importing a Final Cut Movie to iMovie

Hello to all of you, lately I've been having problems importing a movie made in Final Cut (.mov) to iMovie. The iMovie just freezes in the last part. I do this because I wanted to import it later to iDVD so I could have chapters, created so I could separate the scenes where I wanted not where the machine told me.
This movie was two hours long (24 GB aprox.)
Does anyone how to help me with this?

You should be able to send your Final Cut movie to iDVD without having to use iMovie. You can make your own chapter markers in Final Cut.
If you are not planning to burn to a dual layer DVD, you will have to shorten your movie by a few minutes. Two hours is the maximum total content that you can put onto a single layer DVD, and that includes the iDVD menus. Even if your menus are simple, you will not be able to burn a movie over about 1 hour 57 minutes. Dual layer DVDs can hold twice as much as single, so you should be ok if your drive can burn dual layers.
But now, since you already have the movie into iMovie, to get it to work, try exporting it as QuickTime Full Quality. You will need enough hard drive space to do this, since you will be creating a duplicate of your movie. If you have an external drive, have it saved to that drive.
Then, open a new iMovie project, drag the new quicktime movie into it, shorten it by a couple of minutes if you need to, and create your chapter markers. Close iMovie. Open a new iDVD project, drag in the iMovie made with the qt movie.
    Should burn fine.

  • How do import my avi movie into iMovie? And camera help.

I know that these topics have been posted before and I've searched for a solution to no success. I want to import the m ovies I record on my Canon (Ixus 55/Powershot SD450) into my iMovie. BUt whenever I drag the movie file from my desktop to iMovie I get a bouncing icon and it tells me it is not a valid format. I'm sure I have the DivX codec on my Mac, can anyone suggest why it is not working?
While I'm at it, does anyone know of digital cameras of similar standing that will record mpg and iPhoto will erase the content of once it has imported?

If your DVD's are encrypted, Hollywood doesn't want you to be able to figure out how to copy them.  Encryption is used in all store bought DVD's.

  • Is there a way to import iMovie2 for iOS movies into iMovie 10 on a Mac?

I used to be able to save the individual components (clips, voiceover tracks, etc) when I chose "Save to iTunes."
Now that functionality seems limited to sending to another iOS device. Is there a way to get the "pieces" into
iMovie on the Mac for further editing?

  • Best Quality for .avi movies in iMovie HD?

    Hello:
I recently had a number of old 8mm and Super8 movies converted to .avi files. The quality is pretty good and I want to create some DVD movies and I was want some suggestions on the best quality settings when exporting either to iDVD or Toast. I created a small sample movie and exported to a DV file with the highest settings and it plays well on my computer DVD player, but plays in slow motion on my home DVD player. Is it possible that my home DVD player is simply having a hard time decoding the DVD and it looks slow? Is there a way around this via the encoding settings?
    Thanks,
    cbrose

DVD's use MPEG-2 as their playback method so it doesn't matter about all of your conversions (AVI ->DV) as iDVD will convert it again to MPEG-2.
Toast and iMovie do the same thing but iMovie can't convert to MPEG-2.
DV Stream (.dv) is the format used in iMovie and it allows editing. MPEG-2 is solely a playback method and it doesn't allow editing (without converting first).
If your .avi files play properly in QuickTime you can import them into iMovie (converts to DV Stream) edit and add and then send to iDVD (converts to MPEG-2).
If they don't need any editing in iMovie your can just bring them into iDVD, or Toast, (they convert) and then burn the DVD (converted again to MPEG-2).
Try a new "home DVD" box. There is probably something wrong with yours. About $35.

  • Importing avi movies from my Canon camera makes iPhone crash

Every time when i make some movies with my Canon camera (Powershot S2 IS) and I want to import them, together will all my pics on my camera, into iPhoto it makes iPhot crash from the point where it is importing the first AVI movie it comes across.
Now I've successfully imported the movies onto my harddrive now using the Image Capture program, but still when I want to import the movies from my harddrive into iPhoto, or even when i want to play them in Quicktime, it makes iPhoto crash, and also Quicktime crashes when i'm trying to view the movie in there.
can somebody point me to an alternative solution or tell me what's wrong and what i need to fix in order to fix it?

Thanks. I'd love to install that one, but i've heard some stories that this piece of software does quite some harm to some things. I dont remember where i read that or what harm it would do. but i'm sure i've heard it someone say.
can you confirm this? or do you still very much recommend me to install this?

  • Mac OS error 824 with AVI File

Hello, all. So I've done a few searches on this subject, which should be near and dear to your hearts. It concerns a difficulty that I'm having with playing several AVI video files back on Quicktime, and since I plan to use iMovie to edit them, I need to rectify this asap.
Now as you can see from the message topic, I'm being told this is due to an "error 824," and I can't for the life of me find out online what this is. But I do know that my roommate, who also uses Mac, can play the same files on his computer using Quicktime, and I can also play them back on VLC on my computer as well, so I know it's not a hardware problem. I have also removed the XVid codecs from the library folder, and all that's done is ruined my ability to play back other AVI files that need it. (BTW, the files in question use the DVSD codec, as they were shot on a Panasonic camera.)
So does anyone know what's needed here? Let me know. Thanks!

It could be a problem in the new Quick Time (QT). My Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 on 5 Apr 2008. I have been making movies in iMovie then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOVs but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and added time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVIs had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than MOV. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last Friday. I sure hope Apple is also aware.

  • Can't import .mp4 or .avi files

I am unable to import .mp4 or .avi files into iMovie. I have iMovie3.0.3. I am able to import .mov files, but not the two listed above. Is this because i have an older version of iMovie or is it just not possible. I am new to using iMovie, but do understand something. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

I am sure I didn't get iMovie 4, my powerbook is over 2 years old.
    http://img437.imageshack.us/img437/1526/imovie4at.png
I figured it was just because I have an older version. I've known that I can convert the files in QT Pro, I just do not own it.
I'm probably going to end up getting iLive 05.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Can I import both photos & movies to iMovie?

  • Best way to move 2 iMovie projects to 1 iDVD project?

I am in a last minute bind and I was hoping I could get some help! I am making a DVD for my wedding reception that is NEXT weekend. ah! Anyway...here is what I have done:
    1. Created three slideshows w/ KB effects in iPhoto and exported them to quicktime movies. (Question on that if anyone knows - only had three quality levels for that creation, and I chose the highest. Is this the best way to turn these slideshows into movies for eventual incorporation into a DVD??)
    2. Imported all three slideshow movies into iMovie because I want them to play back to back (and found iDVD can't set it up that way) - added title slides between them & stitched them together in their entirity. Now I have one, big movie creation in iMovie that I want to be a feature on my DVD
    3. ALSO created an interview/tour video of our home and town to show at the reception. It contains multiple clips (over 120 edited) from a video camera, extracted audio from the video clips (for some), imported song files for background music, transitions, titles, etc. Now I have one really nice, almost 25 minute video video that I want to be a feature on my DVD.
    What I want to do:
I want both of the movie creations I just described to be on my DVD. (I am planning on doing a third, if it fits & I have time, and I can do the same thing with that based on whatever advice I get.) The DVD will be really simple - just a single title on the main screen of the DVD for each movie b/c they will be played at different times during the reception.
    My questions/concerns:
I looked at my options for getting my creation onto a DVD - here is what I found:
    1. I can share straight to iDVD - but it appears I can only do that for a single movie per DVD project. When I went to share the second movie, it asked me if I wanted to save my original DVD project before making a new one. So it doesn't seem like I can "share" multiple movies to the same DVD project. Also, when you do this - what is really happening?? It didn't take very long, so I know it wasn't copying files over. Is it just making links back to the referenced files, and will somehow write a movie when I actually burn the DVD? If so, what then will be my options for creating the movie??
    2. From iMovie, I can export a project in a number of ways (to video camera, quicktime, email, web, etc). I am assuming that quicktime gives me the best, but not sure. The PROBLEM is that when I exported my main (25min) video, it was over 5GB!!!!!!! That seems a tad big. I forget the size that a DVD can hold, but it just seems like there should be a better way, and this is too big (maybe not?).
    Needs:
As I have stated, this is to be shown at my wedding reception (and maybe parts at the rehearsal dinner). Primarily it is designed for an overhead projector, but obviously it will be watched on TVs/computers at some point.
I am wanting to make sure the video(s) is the best quality I can make it so that it all comes out well. This is my FIRST project, so there are several things I just don't know enough about at this point - learning with this important video, must be crazy!! It looks REALLY good so far, now it is just outputting it so I can show it to the world.
Thanks for ANY pertinent help you can provide, and please, limit responses to the actual things I am asking about as I don't have a lot of time to wade through things trying to 2nd guess & pick what I need. That would be very helpful!!

You can do it in one of two ways (I have done both):
    1. Follow the procedure I outlined using Toast Titanium. You don't have all the bells and whistles of iDVD in the final product, but you have a working DVD. And there has been an ongoing issue with encoding in iDVD where the process hangs or slow way down, especially at the audio endoding stage.
    2. Start a new iMovie, and then copy and paste the clips and audio from your other iMovies into the new one. I tried importing but could not figure out how to do that or if it is even possible. The process of copy and paste is tedious and problematic, especially with the audio tracks and if anyone else has found a better way, I would really like to know. But this does work, but be prepared to spend some time. But it has the advantage of you being able to pick and choose.
