MAC noob needs advice

I've just bought a 2nd hand iMAC (2081 (v3)) with 17" sceen & 515mb of RAM. I'd like to start from new & the iMAC hasn't had any use in 3 years so I want to upgrade it & make good use of it.
The previous owners have passworded the system then sold it on via business so I'd like to wipe it clean & start fresh if possible?
Any good links & advice are welcome,
TIA
PS: I'm MCP & MCSA trained so don't hold back. I've got access to a friends MAC O/S CD's if that's any good?

Welcome to Discussions - You have an iSight? With 512GB of RAM? Do you have the install discs? Only the discs that came with the exact model and version of your iMac can be used. If the previous owners have an unknown password, you probably need to take it to an authorized Apple dealer to have them wipe the hard drive. You also need to buy a retail version of either Tiger or Leopard, using your friend's discs would be illegal.
If you know the password, you can either zero out the drive, using the install disc, or use your new OS disc to perform an Erase and Install.

  • New to Mac computers-need advice about hardware

I purchased a Mac computer on eBay knowing that the mainboard needed to be replaced. I purchased it for the software on the hard drive. I need to replace the mainboard and do not know anything aside from that the bottom is white, round, and has a silver apple on it. I need to purchase a mainboard for the older computer, and don't know what to ask or search for and I would like to know who I could purchase a mainboard from. Any advice would be appreciated. The serial number for the computer is QP30837HNHX and was initially purchased from Apple in Feb. 2003. I've noticed that these computers have models named after large cats, i.e. Jaguar, Tiger, etc. I don't know what mine is, other than it has an 80G HD, 1Ghz G4. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello! Here is a rundown of the computer.
    Serial number: QP30837HNHX
    Name: iMac G4 (Early 2003)
    Model: M6498 iMac G4 1.0GHz
    Bus speed: 133MHz
    Screen size: 17 inch
    Factory: QP (USA)
And also look HERE for additional info concerning iMacs like yours.
You may find a logic board HERE.

  • Have old Power Mac G4, need advice on upgrading the operating system

Hello. Glad I found this forum. Wish it was prominently advertized on the Apple home page. Anyway, I have an old Power Mac G4 running OS X 10.0.4. Well, actually, I've always run it in OS 9.2. In fact recently I started playing with it again and switched it to OS X 10.0.4 and it seems to be unstable. The display dissappears after a while running. The machine is not off, just no display. Hitting the smaller reboot button brings it back up, only to have it repeat the failure. But that's not really my question. I want to use this machine as a Skype phone and for iMovie in OS 9.2. Skype is only available for OS X 10.3.9 and later OS's. So, if it's not a major hassle and expense, I want to upgrade to OS X 10.3.9 or later. That's where I need some advice. Having never attempted such a project, I'd like as much feedback as I can get about what to expect going in. Here are some questions:
    1. Will I still be able to run OS 9.2 (either concurrently or by switching the startup disk when needed) if I upgrade to OS X 10.3.9 or later?
    2. Will this instability with OS X 10.0.4 dissappear if I uprgade?
    3. Where can I find the appropriate upgrade software?
    4. Can I jump from OS X 10.0.4 to a version as late as OS X 10.3.9 without any intermediate steps, and without creating all kinds of little inconsistencies that I will have to chase down to make it work right in day to day use.
If I get answers to all that, I'll be blown away by the spirit of helpfulness on this forum! But anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I don't really want to do anything fancy with the machine, just Skype, hopefully iMovie and maybe stream some TV programs if all goes well. Thanks for reading through all this and for anything you can offer.

Cornelius, clearly you know your Macs!
Thank you. I have great mentors, one of whom is Kappy.
My next question about OS 9 is, if I have to wipe the hard drive, will the Panther retail box I buy include OS 9 or will I need to somehow add it from the original software pack I have after installing Panther?
    You have options.
    1. You can choose to install Panther using the Archive and Install option, which will leave OS 9 untouched. However, since you currently have OS X 10.0.4 on your drive, I think a complete reformat, erase and reinstall is advisable.
    2. You can copy your OS 9 Systems Folder, OS 9 Applications Folder and any data you have have to a USB jump drive, or CD or an external Hard Disk Drive and restore it after Panther or Tiger is installed.
    3. You can install OS 9 from scratch. We will give you step by step directions for doing it.
I'm assuming I can't use the disks that came with my laptop to updgrade my Power Mac G4, right?
It may or may not work. However, the Apple Software License Agreement stipulates that unless you have a multiple user license, the OS can only be installed on one computer at a time.
I'm concerned about OS 9 is because I want to be able to run the OS 9 iMovie that I have on the Power Mac G4 now.
If you reinstall OS 9, that should be included. OS X also has iMovie, although I am not sure if it is included in the Retail Version. You can also purchase iLife which will include iMovie and other apps.
What are the potential pitfalls of buying a copy on eBay? What do I need to know to "know what I'm looking for"? What questions should I ask?
The pitfalls are many. There is fraud on eBay (elsewhere, too, I guess), so you want to be sure you get a reputable seller. You want to be sure that you are getting the Full Retail Version, not computer specific gray disks or upgrade installers. You should ask the seller, in addition, whether you can return the merchandise for a refund if it does not work on your computer. Most reputable sellers want to satisfy their buyers and their business depends on their reputation.
Kappy said I would need more RAM (I have 384 MB). Where would you recommend buying that?
Your computer will support a total of 1.5 GB of PC-133 3.3v, unbuffered, 8-byte, non-parity 168-pin SDRAM in 3 slots. You currently have a 128 MB and 256 MB modules in two slots. You can remove one or both and add two or three 512 MB modules. Check out the list of vendors and prices at ramseeker
    Good luck.

    the rest to follow

It looks like you have multiple problems going on at once.
It takes about 10 seconds from startup to get to the point where it starts complaining:
Dec 22 08:30:54 Macintosh-3 kernel[0]: USBF: 12.187 AppleUSBHubPort: Port 2 of Hub at 0x5d000000 about to terminate a busy device (IOUSBCompositeDevice) after waiting 10 seconds
This is some USB device that's hanging. Try unplugging your everything on the USB line other than your keyboard and mouse and see what difference that makes..
    Dec 22 08:31:00 Macintosh-3 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.ciprico.bcapiservice): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
This is your RAID controller and it's clearly having issues. Without knowing your disk configuration it's impossible to predict what impact this will have, but over half the messages relate to the RAID controller. Where did you get the controller? What devices are connected to it?

  • Mac noob needs monitor help! how do I...

I was given a 2003 imac as a gift. I've always had PCs but was thrilled to have my first mac to play around with. The bad news is that about half the time the monitor doesn't work!!! I turn the computer on and the screen comes on for a split second and then just turns black. The computer is working just fine, in fact if I hold a bright light up to the monitor at just the right angle I can see the screen and see that everything is working...except the monitor. If I put the computer on sleep mode and then touch the keyboard of move the mouse the monitor will work again, but just for one second before going black. The other half of the time the computer works just fine.
SO....seeing as how I am not a rich man I was hoping that there was a way to use my TV as a monitor. I know how to do it was my PC but I am totally clueless with macs. Can it be done? What kind of cable would I have to buy?
Any and all help is appreciated.

A 2003 iMac would be the type that has the display on a chrome-plated arm that swivels and moves up and down, like this one?
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac700fp.html
If so, you should try this procedure to reset the PMU (power management).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1712
See if that makes the video issue, which sounds like a back-light problem, go away.
It has a mini-VGA port for video output. It mirror the built in display at up to 1024x768.
You need an adapter like this
    [Apple Mini-VGA to TV Analog Output|http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Mini-VGA-to-TV-Analog-Output-Cable-Mac-AdapterW0QQitemZ310140585854QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4835d1c77e&_ trksid=p3286.c0.m14&trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1% 7C294%3A50]
to connect it to a TV. If you have an old VGA CRT display, it would produce better results for use as a computer. Then you need a mini-VGA adapter that goes to VGA, which I believe is this one
    [Apple mini-VGA to VGA adapter|http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Mac-Powerbook-mini-VGA-to-VGA-converter-adapt orW0QQitemZ120427739120QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1c0a0d77f0&_ trksid=p3286.c0.m14&trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1% 7C294%3A50]
(I don't know anything about these eBay sellers.)

  • About to purchase new Mac Pro - Need Advice

I am about to purchase a new mac pro and have some questions
I am planning to use final cut pro as well as Edius on Boot Camp.
I intend to edit footage in HDV from a sony Z1 and also from the new sony - pmw -ex3 which i will be planning to edit in HD and 24p.
    1) the default config for the mac pro is dual 2.8.ghz processors, what advantage gain will i get i upgrade to 3.0 or 3.2, is the extra power worth the money? will this give me more real-time editing
How many layers of HD 1920 x 1080 from the sony pmw-ex3, will i be able to edit in FCP 6.0 without any problems? would you advise more ram
    2) i prefer to work from RAID 5 drives and keep system drive separate, this is how i have worked on in PC/Windows environment. Can anyone confirm if i can have one JBOD drive for the system and 3 drives configured as a RAID 5 drive?
Will i be able to use a boot to run windows and also be able to use the RAID 5 drive on windows side?
    3) Is anyone using the 3ware RAID 5 side car? what is experienece is this compatible on the windows partition from boot camp
    4) How will i be able to preview HD footage?
    5) Do i need to invest in a better Graphics
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Here are a few answers.
    1. The Mac Pro 2.8 GHz model performs so well that it is difficult to justify paying 28% more for 7% of additional processor power in the case of the Mac Pro 3.0 GHz or 56% more for 14% additional processor power with the Mac Pro 3.2 GHz model. You might see a small 5-10% increase in performance when compressing video with the 3.2GHz model but it certainly would not be worth paying 50% more to me. In addition, Amazon has the 2.8 on sale for $2599 after an easy rebate:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000VR4F2Q/arizomacinusergr
That is a $200 savings off the retail price.
    2. If you want to use boot camp I would NOT recommend the Apple RAID card. Boot camp does not work with this card which leaves you wondering why you bought the card and how to get around this HUGE limitation. Instead, I would recommend the Areca ARC-1221x, HighPoint RR 3522 or the ARC-1680x if you want a SAS card. All of these cards have new firmware available that provide awesome performance and boot capability with the Mac Pro 2008. I would also get a SeriTek/2eEN4 4-bay and 1TB Samsung HDs. This gives a solid, quiet 4-bay enclosure that can support RAID 5 with any of the cards and you can add a second enclosure later if you want to use all eight external ports with RAID 6 (for added redundancy and increased volume size). This leaves the internal bays available for Boot Camp, Mac OS X, backups or mirrors and provides RAID 5/6 capability that can be configured to perform almost twice as fast as the Apple RAID card and provide double the redundancy with RAID 6. 3. The 3Ware RAID 5 card is not a top pick in the Macintosh market. The options outlined above will provide much better performance and RAID 6 capabilities.
    4. You can view the the HD footage on the monitor.
    5. You may want a better graphics card but I would try the stock card first. I was surprised how well the ATI radeon HD 2600 XT card performs with Apple applications.
    Have fun!

  • MAC newbie needs advice on sawtooth G4 upgrade -is it worth it?

howdy all- I'm a PC guy working on upgrading an older powermac G4 for the daughter. I'm still learning to feel my way around your world, so I'd appreciate ANY help here w/ this...
from what I can tell the G4 is a sawtooth?- one of the earlier models w/ a 400Mhz CPU but does have AGP graphics & a good deal of memory albeit on a 100Mhz FSBus.
our situation is this.... it has OS X 10.3.9 panther installed w/ classic 9.2x. right now it's pretty limited for online streaming & such & needs a SAFARI upgrade which relies on an OS upgrade to at least TIGER 10.4.
from everything I've read the G4 (especially faster CPU's) & TIGER still have some life left in them, but I guess I'm wondering for how long???
    my questions are these;
-- is it worth springing $100plus for a TIGER install on this machine OR would the money be better spent on a newer machine? (a side note is that money IS an issue & the less spent the better but only if it has a useful life...)
    my wife has an INTEL macbook w/ OS X 10.5x installed. I have downloaded LEOPARD ASSIST as I've read it allows slower G4's to install 10.5 w/out the supported hardware checks. I've also read leopard runs slower on G4's & some apps etc. aren't available. so bottom line is;
--WILL an INTEL 10.5x install disk load on the G4 even w/ LEOPARD ASSIST???
--and if so? would it even be worth it if apps don't work & it slows the machine down?
--also how much disk space will that require. me thinks HDD has about 4GB left but panther can be deleted correct???
    so my options are;
    1) Intel OS X 10.5 for free (if it installs w/ possibly diminished performance)
    2) buy OS X 10.4 TIGER for under 200bux (but is that practical given internet advancements/requirements in the near future?)
    3) look for a newr G5 machine for as little as possible on CL or something??? any recommendations here??? my daughter will just be emailing, streaming, & the like...
thanx for any perspectives here. UR enlightening me even as I write this...

    Hi-
Upgrading the processor is possible, and of definite benefit.
You need at least 1.0GHz to have a fighting chance.
A better than OEM graphics card is also a plus in the battle.
Any card that supports Core Image has the power that will help with video.
ebay has some deals on CPU upgrades.
A 1.0 or 1.2GHz upgrade, though, will probably cost more than a complete 933MHz Quicksilver will.
If you can get a 1.0 or 1.2GHz 7455 processor on the cheap, you will have a good chance of getting net video content working well in the Sawtooth.
Mine, with a 2.0GHz processor, did a great job with net video.
Now, that processor sees the benefits of the 133MHz bus in a Quicksilver, and the added benefit of a powerful 4x AGP graphics card.
My daughters each use a 2002 Quicksilver, one with a Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card, one with a Radeon 9700 Pro, and both with 1.5GB RAM.
These machines do a good job of handling web content in Tiger.
Leopard is also fine on the two machines.
I also have a dual 1.0GHz QS2002, and it handles most sites with no problem.
I figure the ones that are a problem, are due to something on the other side of my internet connection.....
Streaming HD content will always be a problem, and an Intel Mac or a 2.5GHz+ PC isn't always the answer. Some content just needs to be downloaded, period.
Other content needs the attention of a caring and careful site developer.
These things are beyond our control......

  • Total mac noob needs a little help!

Hi everyone, Just got an imac and just a few things are bugging me, i installed firefox and msn messeger, and underneath my Mac HD icon, there are white disk box thingys that wont go away, why is this? is it because the programs havent been installed properly and are running off the exe's or something? (i hope that made sense) so yea thats annoying, and also it wont let me delete my trash can msn file cause it says it is being used, but i dont think it is? maybe im not installing my programs properly i'm unsure, if someone could help me this would be great, there is probably a thread about this somewhere else but i had a little look and didn't find anything, thanks!

  • MOVED: Overclocking noob needs advice and help

    Quote from: HU16E on 16-February-09, 13:52:53
Only work with FSB or RAM first. Don't do both at the same time. It is best to start with FSB first. CPU V. increase is done at point of no post. My P6N's E6600 still uses the stock cooler @ 3.0. Make sure Spread Spectrum is 'Disabled', & System Clock is set to 'Manual". Since your at 2.7 now, guessing FSB is 1200. Raise in small increments until no post, add + one step CPU V. & retest for post.
To reach 1333 (333X9=3.0) with mine, it took + two CPU V. steps, an increase of NB to 1.275, SB 1.55, & FSB VTT V. 2%. Once stable, I kept my RAM at 800. Not having a copy of your manual, I'm not exactly sure of your bios Cell Menu layout.
Once you have reached your goal, 3.0-3.2 stable, & want to increase mem. from 667 to 800, set DRAM Clock to 800, use the JEDEC Std. timings of 5 5 5 18, DRAM V's. of 1.95 (Max. 2.1). If stable at JEDEC, you could try tightening the timings to the EPP rating 4 4 4 12 DRAM V's. 2.1. If that works, great. If not, just revert back to the JEDEC Std.
Great info & advice man. Thanks. I will have questions though because I don't fully understand what all of this means. For instance, what are those values : "an increase of NB to 1.275, SB 1.55, & FSB VTT V. 2%"...?
As soon as I've installed my Noctua, I'll start working on that OC. I'd love to reach 4.0GHz like Jack...think that's possible? Thanks!

  • New user of G4 - need advice on selection of printer, DV and digital camera

I am a recent convert to mac and need advice from experts on the following:
I plan to use my G4 MDD primarily for home computing, experimenting with digital photography, create DVDs and explore multimedia primarily as a hobby. Please advice me on selection of a decent digital camera and or a DV camera. I am not sure if I have a decent DV camera - whether this will be good enough for still photos as well. My G4 has firewire ports.
Also I am interested in buying a printer that I can use with my mac as well as connect to a two other windows systems. My printing needs are primarily documents and maybe photos.. I think that going in for a laser printer makes sense in terms of reliability .
I am not looking for the highend equipment - willing to spend upto 750 $ on all items. Thanks in advance.

    raja,
    welcome to discussions.
Digital Camera, DV camera and colour Laser Printer all for $750 ??
I'm afraid you'll have to go for an inkjet printer if you want colour photos. Expensive doesn't even begin to describe Colour Laser Printers. HP make good printers, but tend to be a bit more expensive to run, Epson make excellent photo printers, are are a bit more economical to run, take a look at the iP4000 and iP5000. I still use my old HP DeskJet 1200 (does A3), and a DeskJet 970Cxi (everyday), both use the same cartidges. These are about 7 years old, there are modern versions retailing now at about half of what I paid for these then(always the case).
Digital cameras can be decided by what purpose you intend to use them for. I have an 18 month old Nikon D100 digital SLR. 6M pixel (which was a lot then) but that might not matter, it takes Nikon lenses (and other manufacturer lenses to the same spec), so I can shoot with a 300mm, 400mm, 600mm lens. Nikon has a D50 out now, a cheaper, newer version of my camera. I can print A3 photo real from 6M pixels and with the right lens I don't need to crop my pictures too much. If you want to print photo real A4 (and that's a LOT of ink) a 3-4M pixel camera would be fine. Most cameras now are 5-8 M pixel, this is because the pictures they take have to be cropped drastically because they have an inadequate lens. On top of that my Nikon takes really great pictures, better than any of my other digi cameras (but not as good as my ancient Olympus 35mm muji-zoom compact with 200 film).
So if you're going to take a lot of close ups in well lit areas, product shots, interior shots with flash, ie. "snaps" rather than photography, any cheap digi camera will do. Good points are
    - USB / Firewire connectivity,
    - non-proprietry battery technology, ie. it uses 4 x recharable AAs instead of a battery that only fits that camera, and it comes with a AA recharger.
    - non-proprietry storage technology, ie. it uses Compact Flash or some other that is used by a large portion of cameras, rather than just be that manufacturer.
    - digital zoom is worthless.
If you're doing outdoor photography, wildlife, landscapes, etc, you may want something with a changeable lens and SLR technology, a digital SLR. Not all digital SLR cameras have changeable lenses. Same good points as above, but be prepared to sacrifice one of the points for a good camera. Heavy cameras are easier to hold steady with a big lens, so try for a metal case (it'll be coated in plastic anyway).
For outdoors the most important thing is the amount of light entering the camera (indoors you can control the lighting with flash / fitted lighting), digital SLRs can have enormous lenses (my 28mm hyperzoom lens has a 72mm diameter), compare this to a compact digital camera with a 12mm diameter lens, I take 36x the light of a compact. And it shows in the picture quality.
I'm a complete duffer with DV cameras so I won't lead you astray with this, but be aware some do offer the option to take digital pictures. Indeed some digital cameras can take low quality short movies.
Let us know if you have any more questions.

  • Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.
    Much obliged for any input

PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED.  Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.
Best price and quality, got my 1,1 with 8 x 2GB (ideal is 4 or 8 DIMMs)
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $25
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
With price of 250GB SSD $155 I'd go with that or stick with $89 for 128GB .

  • I'm desperately needing advice to a common question.  I use Quicken and love it.  But the Mac version is not as great as the PC.   Has anyone installed it by segmenting their Mac with Parallels or Fusion or Boot camp.  If so, which one do you recommend.

I'm desperately needing advice.  New Mac.   Used Quicken on my PC.  Researched all software for Financial programs and Quicken is still the most recommended.   I want to use Quicken on my Mac.  The Mac version is not highly rated so I would need to partition my Mac.   Has anyone done this for their quicken program and if so, which partitioning program did you use - Parallels, Fusion ware or Boot camp?
    Thx

Thanks.  Hadn't heard of it. ?  Is there any concern installing this free program on my Mac.    Have you used it?  Apart from being free is there any other advantage of Parallels and VMfusion. ?
Virtual Box is safe and well developed, it offers similar or identical features to the paid competition, it may be a little less polished but that's all.
Download and try it out, nothing to lose (except time).

  • Noob needs help using/managing large font collection in os10

Hope this is the correct forum for this question. I'm a os10 noob starting at a new, small startup design-oriented biz (6-7 macs) that needs to manage fonts - 100s, over a 1000. Other places I've worked used Font Reserve and I'm familiar with that program but I never knew if it came with os10 or you had to go buy it, and if you needed to buy a separate copy for each computer?
I'm trying to help get this biz set-up, but I know NOTHING about font usage/set-up in os10. I've always used ATM Deluxe4.6 (os9) and have over 2000 fonts nicely arranged in sets (took me an entire day, way back when). Would love to transfer these arranged sets into os10, if possible.
Is there a built-in font mgmt in os10? Is it any good for large collections? Is Font Reserve a good program for large font collections?
I don't even know where os10 stores fonts or the right questions to ask. Pls point me in the right direction!
    TIA

Fontbook is ok for dealing with a handful of fonts on an occasional basis, but for pro design work you should run, don't walk, to: http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX/
FontExplorerX beats the pants of any other font management tool I've used on the mac after many years of ATM, Suitcase & Font Agent Pro. FEX looks and feels like an "iTunes for Fonts" - it's fast, stable, clean and simple to use and best of all for a small biz (like me) - it's FREE! :O
