Mac not constantly connected to network

I have both a Mac Mini and a Macbook and both are unable to maintain connection with the network. The internet does work, but whenever I need to use the wireless printer or connect with another computer on the network, I need to reset airport to establish connection. There is a PC on the network, and it does not have this problem.

Read through these router settings for any cause/effect.

How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network? Thanks

You can do it manually, but it is much simpler if you use a tool such as Back To My Mac, LogMeIn, or something like that. Those programs enable you to connect to your computer through your router without you having to adjust the router settings manually.

  • MacBook Air does not automatically connect to network

The MBA automatically connects to the network when the network broadcasts the SSID, however when I don't broadcast the SSID then I have to manually setup the network in order to connect to it. On a Windows PC running XP there is a checkbox that allows the computer to connect to networks that are not broadcasting the SSID. Is there any such thing for the MAC?

You can setup a network location on your mac and select a preferred network for the mac to join.
However there is no reason not to broadcast an SSID. It does not make you any more secure as wifi sniffing software can detect hidden networks just as easily as none hidden ones. It gives a false sense of security. The only wifi protection you should consider using is WPA or WPA2.
Is there any such thing for the MAC?
FYI a MAC is not a Mac

  • Ipod touch will not stay connected to network after trying to use scrabble

I had a new ipod touch and purchased the scrabble app from EA games. I could not log into facebook to load my games onto the app on my touch. The ipod would send me to my home page and disconnect me from the internet. Eventually my ipod would not connect to the network at all. I called Apple and they determined that the ipod was faulty and sent me a new one. Upon receiving the new ipod I downloaded and tried to use Scrabble again not thinking that the problem was the Scrabble app from the get go. Now again my ipod will not stay connected to the network. I have deleted the Scrabble app and reset my network settings and still nothing. It will occasionally connect but I cannot do anything with the ipod. However, it will work when plugged into my computer. I have contacted EA Games with the problem and they have "escalated my issue to their expert team", but I have yet to hear anything back from them. Anyone else having similar issues and know how to resolve this?

  • YouView box does not re-connect to network after l...

My youview box does not re-connect to the network after the home hub has dropped out. The original message I put in regarding this was moved to the BT Infinity Speed/Connection Issues forum but I still think this is an issue here. Is connectivity still an issue with the youview box or am I facing a problem? I have to restart youview whenever there has been an issue. I'd like not to have to do that. It should realise (several hours after the hub has restarted) that the network is present and use it.

You should be able to just go into settings and redetect the network - try this before performing a full power off
Tried successfully. Don't know why I never tried it before. It's a lot easier than rebooting the box
Get used to doing it on a regular basis especially as the HH5 reboots at least every 30 days

  • Mac NOT automatically connecting to preferred wifi network

    Hi,
I am facing a problem with OS X 10.9.1 (Mavericks) wifi connection.
I use a Time Capsule as a base station and 13" Macbook Air (2012). The base station is connected to the internet through a PPOE connection.
    Here are the details.
Since upgrading to OS X 10.9.1, my Mac automatically connects to preferred wifi network ONLY WHEN the wifi is available at start up or when the Mac wakes up from sleep, but NOT OTHERWISE.
Before the upgrade, the Mac automatically connected to the preferred wifi network not just at start up, but whenever the wifi became available.
In other words, after the upgrade, if I boot up the Time Capsule base station and the Mac simultaneously, the Mac scans for the base station wifi network (this is configured as the top preferred wifi network) at start up, but since the base staion is still booting up, the Mac doesn't find the wifi.
But once the base station has booted up and wifi is available, the Mac no longer bothers to join it.  At this point, the Mac is also not able to do Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule because it is not able to locate the Time capsule disk over the wifi.
This situation remains (i.e., the Mac being not connected to the wifi) unless I do ONE of the following:
    1. I manually select the preferred wifi network using the wifi icon at the top of the screen;  OR
    2. I put the Mac to sleep (by closing the cover) and then wake it up.  On wake up, it connects automatically to the preferred wifi network; OR
    3. I turn of the wifi (using the wifi icon on the top) and turn it back on, at which point, the Mac automatically connects to the preferred wifi network.
I have tried everything possible including contacting Apple support, but so far the issue is unresolved.
Appreciate any help you can provide.
    Prem

I have had wireless problems intermittently for a year, and seriously for 6 weeks. Apple denied the issue and was no help in spite of many tens of thousands of people on their own discussions complaining. I found a post suggesting a couple of things which fixed the problem. I don't know if both are necessary, but the first by itself does not solve the problem.
Lock the channel of your router to channel 1, apparently Apple and 802.11n don't play well together on higher channels. When this becomes a standard this will be resolved I hope.
Open your network preferences, select 'airport' and advanced. Delete unused networks. Select your network.
Open TCP/IP and write down all the settings, configure iPv4 manually. Enter the settings manually. Turn off IpV6.
Open DNS and write down your DNS server. Delete it and re-enter it manually.
This has worked on 2 macbooks and an iMac for the last 3 weeks with no network drops.

  • Mac air cannot connect to network

Everythibh in my room including iphone, ipad and another laptop can connect to the wi-fi in my home
however, Mac air always shows "!" on wi-fi icon n cannot use the internet!!!
    What should i do???? thanks

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, first turn Wi-Fi off and back on. If it still fails to connect, then from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, restart the computer and try again. If there's no change, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click  Applyand test.
If there's still no connection, and if you have control of the router, compare its settings to Apple's recommendations. Some third-party routers may be incompatible in 802.11b/g/n radio mode. Try setting the mode to 802.11n only.

  • My old Mac no longer connects to network. ideas?

I have an awesome old cube that I use to connect to the network and play music for the room it's in using the tunes library from another computer. My problem is that since I changed to a static IP on my network, I can no longer see the LAN. It connects fine to the WAN through the cable modem, which it's plugged into via ethernet, but it only uses DHCP for it to work. When I manually enter the modem's ip, (gateway/router), it gives me an error that the address is not on this computer's subnet anywhere and to change the address.
It is a long, long way to the other computer, so wiring directly is not an option. It used to connect fine with the same setup, when I had a dynamic address system. Here's my setup:
Comcast cable modem - coax to the net
Airport express - ethernet to the modem. Only one ethernet port
several wireless computers connect via Airport
Cube is plugged into cable modem via ethernet
Cube is on OS X 10.3.9 and has no wireless capability
I've tried using the subnet comcast gave me and also the basic DHCP subnet mask, but neither work. I've even tried to use the static ip of the airport ex as the router, but no.
What am I missing? I guess I could get an airport extreme, and use the extra ethernet port to connect and that would work, but I kind of think there should be a no cost solution here.
    Thanks for any help,
    DD

    Hi Dennas,
Not sure what numbers you're using, but it sounds as if you might be confusing the Outside IP with the internal Router's IP, not sure.
Generally the one you want to use will start with 192.168.x.y, or 10.0.x.y, then it'd look something like this...
    IP: 192.168.0.9
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.0.1
    or...
    IP: 10.0.0.9
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 10.0.0.1
All Computers should have the same Router IP & Subnet Mask, but only the 1st 3 numbers of the IP are the same, the 4th number has to be different, & if Static you need to set that 4th number higher than the number of computers connected+1 so DHCP ones won't get duplicate IPs.
Does that get us any closer?

  • How can I transfer files between a PC and a Mac NOT on the same network?

I have an iCloud account, a Time Capsule and a Seagate Free Agent portable hard drive. Which ways can I transfer files (any or all three?) and how?  Here's my dilemma: I'm a graphic designer and I work on a PC at my office. At home I use my MacBook Pro...same programs, save files. However, I had trouble earlier saving my new documents onto the Free Agent from my MacBook Pro as the Free Agent was Read Only and original files on it were from the PC. The PC is not on my Time Capsule network and not accessible or even close to my MacBook. I simply want to be able to save the files I updated/changed on my Mac to somewhere that I can access them later from that PC...right now they are saved to my Documents folder. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

  • Mac not automatically connecting to Aiport Express

I recently set my airport express basestation with a WEP security password. Now my computer no longer automatically connects when I turn it on, whereas my girlfriends PC does. I have to wait then select my network from the airport drop down list. When I am at work or anywhere else for that matter my computer connects automatically to the network available even though it also is password protected...

  • Printer will not stay connected to network

The printer will no longer stay connected to the network.  If we turn the printer off and back on again it will print but shorly after it says "The printer is not connected.  Again, turning it off and back on again will allow it to connect.  Tried uninstalling it and reinstalling, did not make a difference.   The firmware is the latest and all drivers are up to date.
Solution??  I have two kids in college and this is becoming very frustrating.
    Thank you,

Hi @jraitt , I would very much like to help you with your 6500a plus.
Please use the following document to troubleshoot the issue, and let me know the outcome of your efforts; Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection.
As a work around, if the issue persists, you could connect an Ethernet cable from the printer to the router. This will disable the wireless in the printer and possibly allow a more stable connection. If however you connect an Ethernet cable and the issue persists, we will then know the issue is not the printer at all and is the router.
    I hope this helps.

  • Will NOT automatically connect to network!

iMac G4 17" Flat panel (Yes, the one with the black monitor still!) has a new Airport Extreme card fitted. I have configured it to join my home network about 4,562 times. But each time I start the iMac up, I have to manually click on the Airport icon at the top toolbar, and select my network.
I think I've tried everything but I wonder if there's anyone out there knows a remedy for this little diversion away from the delights of the weekend?
My 5 kids are less hassle than this little bstar at the moment. Bless it.
    Any help is heavily appreciated!
    Chris

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Do not let "Windows automatically configure your network".  Instead do the following:
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete your current network (this will remove any old settings).  Reboot computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  It should connect automatically.  If you still have trouble, in the computer, temporarily disable your software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see if that helps.
Some users have reported improved wireless connections by switching to WPA  ( = WPA with TKIP)  encryption.

  • Printing problems with my newest Mac: can't connect to networked LaserJet

I have several Macs printing to an HP LaserJet 4000TN on my LAN. All but one work fine. Even the Windows machine works. The bad actor is a new MacBook Pro.
When I try to set the printer up (using the HP JetDirect IP connection), for some reason it can't figure out which driver to use—I have to manually select it. And very often it refuses to print, saying that it can't connect to the printer. Power cycling the printer fixes it temporarily (printer is set in Energy Saver mode but wakes up fine for other machines).
All my other Macs (all using latest Snow Leopard) work fine. What's the problem?

Error Message: "Unable to Connect to Printer, will try again in 30 seconds...
I have the same problem. It just started a few days ago. Prior to that, it was printing fine. I recently did an Apple Software update, so I'm guessing that's where the problem originated from.
I have a Brother Multifunction that's setup on my WLAN.
I got the message after attempting to:
Factory reset the printer and setting up WLAN again
Uninstalling all Brother Printer and Scanner Drivers and Reinstalling
    Switching to WiredLAN to print
    Same Error Message Each Time
Two days ago, I also installed a new print cartridge. When I saw the levels a day later, it looked like it was half used - No Way!
There is obviously a miscommunication between ink/toner level and new cartridges and the Apple Drivers for WLAN.
To my knowledge, there is no fix at this time and Apple needs to resolve this high priority.
What I don't get is why won't the wired config for the printer work either?
Last fix attempt: Take out all cartridges and reinstall. No Juice!
My Findings: The Latest Apple Software Update will screw up the communication between your Mac and print drivers.
Solution: It's all On Apple to fix this ASAP!

Can you verify your settings at:
