Mac not reading entire storage capacity of ext HD

I bought a 200gb HD for my powermac, but once it mounts it says the capacity is 128gb, and thats all i can fit on there. How can i get my mac to recognize the HD as a 200gb one?
Thanks for any help!

You installed this disk on the original IDE bus? If so then the limit on most Power Mac G4s is just that, 128GB. You would need a PCI based IDE or SATA card to install larger drives.

  • Mac not reading certain DVDs.....

Can someone offer a download/quickfix to this problem? One DVD in particular works fine on my DVD player connected to my TV, but will not read on my computer.
Is there something I can download to improve the readability of the software? I have Toast 7 and IDVD, but I think the problem isn't with either player, but something with the machine.
    Thoughts ?

Many have reported mixed results reading DVDs on Macs and here are the most common reasons:
    1. If these are all commercial movie DVDs, and they are the standard size on
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
and the problem is strictly with playing movies, I'd contact Apple here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
    2. There are some programs in the media content of discs that only work on Windows or a special DVD Player called Interactual Player. http://player.interactual.com/default.asp?code=MAC
    3. If these are homemade DVDs it gets stickier. Many people burn to DVD something other than the standard Video_TS folders, thus they aren't playable in a standard DVD Players. DVD-R DL is not as supported as DVD+R DL.
Older Macs don't support DVD+R DL or single layer at all. To find out if yours does, check the specs of your Mac:
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html
If the Mac only supports CD-ROM, CD-RW, or CD-R, then it doesn't support DVD at all. Combo drive Macs support playing DVD-ROM and DVD-R discs, but now DVD-RW or DVD+R unless the specs actually say those formats are supported. Superdrive Macs of varying vintages may support DVD-R, and DVD-RW, but not DVD+R or DVD+RW when it comes to burning.
PC burnt DVDs in UDF or Joliet may not read at all whereas those burnt in ISO 9660 have a much better chance of being read. For UDF, you may need:
    http://www.softarch.com/us/products/rdvd.html
    4. DVDs burnt for different regions than a region locked DVD drive may also not play:

  • Mac not reading RAID drives

I have been having problems with my ATA VideoRaid drive of sometimes the computer not recogning it and not mounting it to the desktop or finder. I go to the system profiler, and it recognizes it there. It is connected through a SCSI cable connection. I go to Disk Utility and it recognizes it also, it recognizes the ATA RAID drive, and it also recognizes it as the name I have given it, MediaExternal. But the MediaExternal portion of it has like a blank document image next to it.
The MediaExternal is the way I formatted the drive, Mac OS Extended. I have been having problems with this RAID, with it loosing sync during a video capture. I use this RAID with Final Cut Pro editing system. I have fixed the problem with the sync loss, mostly after buying Disk Warrior and basically erasing the whole drive, and trashing the preferences in FCP.
But now my problem is with the drive not mounting on the desktop or finder. Any advice!
    G5 Dual 2 GHz PowerPC
    8 GB DDR SDRAM
    Mac OS X 10.4.8

It won't allow me to verify permissions or even repair them. It will only allow me to verify disk and repair disk, in which both of those came back ok. I really can't back anything up, because it won't even allow me to access the files.

  • Mac not reading Airport express.

    Hello..
I just bought the airport express and I connected the ethernet cable from my cable modem to the port. At this point the Airport light was green and the lights on my modem were flashing as if it was working.
Thinking this was a great start I went to the Aiport Setup Assistant and chose to set up a new airport base station. An error comes up telling me "no new airport networks were found". I can't get the internet to work, and I've tried with my mac and my girlfriends pc.
    Two things:
    1. What can the issue be?
    2. Why are the modem lights flashing as if there is a connection to something.
Any help would be great. Thanks.

Make sure that you have Airport turned on in the
Airport menu in the menu bar. If it is turned on,
make sure that the Express is in an unconfigured
state. To do so, press and hold the reset button
until the LED flashes rapidly. Then try running the
    Airport Setup Assistant again.
Yes it says that its on, but yet I am getting no bars on my mac.
Do I need to configure anything on my mac so the Airport signal is read. It seems like my system just isnt reading the port. AHH..Sorry..not super computer savvy, yet really want to get this working. Thanks so much.

  • Mac not reading Disc full of .VOB and other DVD files

Hi all! I wasn't sure where to put this so here I am.
I'm currently transferring old VHS cassettes to DVD-R using the Sony RDR VX530. The disc plays in the Sony. I finalize it and take all appropriate steps. When I insert the DVD-R into my MacBook, it says "Burnable Disc" and shows no files. None at all. I took the disc to my sister's house and put the disc in her Windows laptop and ::BAM:: all the files were there and playable on the windows machine. What gives? I can put other dvds in the drive and see the Video_TS and Audio_TS files, but not the ones I record on this machine. The machine only has two recording options, VR and Video, both of which have to be finalized. Is there a solution besides me having to go borrow a windows laptop to connect to the network so I can pull the .vob files onto my mac?

It sounds to me like you didn't finalize your DVD!
Most DVD recorders and DVD cameras don't finalize the DVD until you specifically tell them to. This finishes writing things like file system information on to the disk but it also makes it so that more data cannot be written to the disk in the future. (This is why it doesn't do it until you tell it to).
Some Windows computers have software that allows them to read disks that haven't been finalized yet. I actually think its a feature of Vista and 7 but I'm not sure about that. Either way, look in your DVD recorder's manual about finalizing the disk to get it to work on your Mac.

  • XMP Files from MAC Not Reading On PC

My question is two-fold, so I apologize that this is long, but it will be best with the backstory:
I shoot Raw on a Canon 5DMIII and import my images into Lr5 on my PC as CR2 files. I am beginning to work with an editor for the post production of my images and upload my files to her via Dropbox. In effort to keep the files as small as possible (and upload/download times shorter), I export my images as DNGs. Specifically, I ensure the 'Use Lossy Compression' option is checked and the 'Embed Original Raw File' is unchecked. I then resize the image to 2000 pixels on the Long Edge and the overall file is under 1MB.
She then imports the DNG files into her iMac for editing also in Lr5. Prior to my exporting, I will edit a few images as sneak peeks for my clients, flag them as a 'pick' and code them as 'red'. When she imports my DNGs, she can see the 'red', but she cannot see the flagged images. Fine, this is something I can live without. She does her editing, also flagging them as a pick and coding them red. She then exports as the original file.
She then uses ExifTool, opens the terminal application and write in: "exiftool -xmp -b -w xmp -r", drags in the DNG files and exports the XMPs. She then sends the XMP files back to me, I place them into my folder with my original RAW files, tell my PC to 'replace' the XMP files that are already in the folder. Then in Lr5, I highlight all my files and select 'Read Metadata From File'.
Now, initially, nothing happens. I am unable to see any images flagged or coded red. However, I do see the 'attention' icon (I'm sure that is not the right name for it) on the upper right corner of the images she has edited when in the library module. If I click on it, it tells me that the MetaData has conflicting information and do I want the file or catalog to be primary. I click on the 'file' option and only then do I see her edits, including the 'red' coding (but not flagged as 'pick').
Part 1 Questions: Why when I am instructing it to 'Read the MetaData From File' is it not automatically picking up her edits? Am I doing something incorrectly when I put the XMPs back in the original folder with the RAW images and have the XMPs replace the originals? Is it normal for the 'pick' flags to not transfer?
Part 2 Questions: When she edits my images, she creates a virtual copy and creates one color and one b+w of each image for my clients. As such, she sends me back two XMP files for one image. How do I get these 2nd XMPs to map to the virtual copy within my library, as I am only creating the virtual copy of an image once I know it is one she selected for the final gallery. If I create a virtual copy of an image she edited after-the-fact, the b+w XMP cannot locate it.
Any guidance is appreciated! Thank you!

I never tried this, but I'm pretty sure that with DNG files, Lightroom will ignore xmp files, even when you instruct Lightroom to "Read Metadata from File". Lightroom expects all the metadata to be in the DNG file, not in the xmp file.
Pick flags, as far as I know, are never written to xmp file; nor are they written to DNG files.
If you're going to make this transfer procedure work, you need to do it by either (a) embedding the metadata in the DNG file and send those back and forth; or (b) use RAW and xmp and then sending the xmp files back and forth (plus I guess you have to transfer the original RAW once to your editor)

  • Mac not reading Elements 6 disc

I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard.  It's been awhile since I've tried installing Photoshop Elements 6, but I am trying currently.  Disc is good, no scratches, used for install plenty of times in the past.  Every time I insert it into the laptop, it takes the disc and thinks on it, like it's going to load.  But then just ends up spitting the cd back out.  Any help as to how to correct this?

Not mounting.  No other drive to try at this very moment, but hopefully when I can get ahold of a friend.  Disc is most likely good though, kept in original casing, and was working just fine when I installed in the past, before Snow Leopard.  However, I've been seeing a lot of similar posts to this without a definite fix.  I didn't have this issue before Snow Leopard.  Is it some sort of compatability issue?  Is there something that needs to be downloaded for a fix?

  • Ipod Nano reading invalid storage capacity

I recently purchased an Ipod nano- and when I look at the "about ipod" part - it says the ipod only has a capacity of 873 megs - yet it is a one gig ipod nano...any reason why this is happening? and how can I fix this? thank you

In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode look at the info or properties window for the disk. In fact if you look at the size reported for the drive of the computer you are using you'll find it's the same.
Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk.

  • Mac not reading internal hard drive, running from external

I have a Macbook Pro, that stopped working on me.
After some tinkering around, I was able to boot up after it crashed, but only by removing the hard drive and accessing it through the USB ports.
    Two part question...
A- How do I see if the computer is recognizing the internal hard drive? (I purchased a new one and placed it in the unit)
B- How do I clone the old hard drive, now external, to the new hard drive?
I also was not able to partition the new hard drive yet
    thanks!

If the drive mounts through a USB, it should be OK.  The cable connecting the HD to the logic board inside the system may be faulty.  That service/part runs around $75 and can be had at the Genius Bar.  Or find other sources: https://www.google.com/#q=macbook+pro+hard+drive+ribbon+cable&revid=1133110092

  • Mac not reading VOB files on some burnt DVD-R

I want to use Mpeg Streamclip to convert VOB files to a quicktime file. I'm successful in doing this when I burn a DVD-R from Mac software. But when I put in a dvd-r into my Mac that was recorded "on-the-fly" on my Panasonic DVD recorder, it shows the dvd icon on the desktop but when I open it there is nothing there. The DVD plays on the dvd player fine, but I have no access to the files. I tried it on a PC and it does show. Does anybody know what the problem is? Thank you

I found out you just have to select the DVD as a whole in the File>open window. It will then select the Video TS

  • How is it possible to cancel (not suspend) a video download from iTunes Store (iPad under iOs 6)? (I do not have sufficient storage space on my iPad)

    Hi,
I am facing the following difficulty with my iPad (model MD369NF/A) under iOs 6.1.3.
I have bought 2 videos on iTunes Store, but I do not succeed in downloading them: an error message mentions that iPas does not have enough storage capacity.
As a matter of face, when I look at the way the storage is used, I find “Others” for around 10 Go (is there some king of reserved space for the downloading of videos from iTunes Store?), and only a very small number of Mo available.
I would simply like to cancel the downloading of the 2 videos, and hope that it would free the "Others" storage space (in the hypothesis that "Others" is space reserved for videos once downloaded), but I do not manage to do it. I can suspend the downloading, but I do not see how to cancel it.
Would you have a solution to propose ?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Nicolas

    Hey Nicolas36,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article outlines issues with free space, capacity, and a large amount of "other" space. You'll want to connect your iPad to your computer with iTunes to follow the steps:
iOS: 'Not enough free space' alert when trying to sync
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1503
One symptom of this issue will be displayed in iTunes where the Capacity indicator for the iOS device will report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the device. To resolve this issue:
    - Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
    - Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
    - Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
    - Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Best option for MBA storage capacity

    Hi all,
Running around a number of options on which config of storage capacity to go for with a new MBA. Money is a bit tight so for that reason I'd prefer to go for the 128Gb SSD version but I know that will not be enough storage capacity for me.
Therefore I'm mulling several solutions: USB storage, SDHC storage (on 13" model) or an external HDD via USB. Best VFM is obv an external hdd, but access times/running speeds (excuse the layman terms!) are ultimately my priority.
I don't know much about what it's really like running extra storage permanently like I plan to - I assume it won't be as fast or glitch-free as internal storage would be, but I have no idea whether it'll be acceptable or awful. Example of use are prob running music/video files off it.
I guess my question to you guys is, what kind of access expectations can I expect with the above options?
Or, should I just take a deep breath and jump for the 256Gb version? Thanks in advance

Right - yes, I've just been researching into SD Classes. Had no idea before!
My ultimate aim is to have some extra storage that performs well enough at a low cost. Typical activity will probably be playing music and watching movies from the external media - what I'm worried about is poor data transfer speeds affecting playback etc. Can you advise on, for example, at what speed this would be a problem, and thus at what speeds I'd need? (sorry for all the questions!)
If these problems are unlikely to happen with an SDHC, I would be tempted to go for it purely on the aesthetic grounds.
    Thanks again,
