Mac not seeing SMB/CIFS shares that others computers can see

I set up a test that fails. There are three computers
1) A Mac running "Tiger"
2) PC running Windows 2000
3) A Linux server running Samba
Both Win2K and Linux export some SMB/CIFS shares
The Mac can "see" the Win2K shared files but when the Mac tries to connect to the Linux server the finder hangs and has has to be killed. Going to a terminal on the Mac and I type "smbclient -L <Linuxsevername> I see all the services on the linux machine. So I try "smbclient //rabbit/wsfiles/" (Where the names rabbit and wsfiles where cut and pasted from the smbclient -L output.) and I get an "Invalid network name" error. Yes, I have cnnectivity to "rabbit", ping, ssh, X11 and FTP work fine
On the Win2K PC I can access the Linux shares
The Linux server can access it's own shares using "smbclient"
Linux Samba must be working because I can access the shares from Win2K. Mac must be working because it can access shares from the PC. So I can argue that nothing could be broken but clearly something is. I have many years experiance with UNIX but have avoided PCs and PC networking.
Anyone have a list of things I can check?

Hi C JAbertson, check the logs in /Applications/Utilities/console see if they provide any clue to why.You are using SMB://rabbit/wsfiles/ format in the go to window? Have you got SMB enabled in Directory Access?

Have you set up any security on the Mac Connection Sharing?
Sorry but I don't use that so I'm not familiar with the settings.
But if you haven't setup and security the iPhone might not mind but I know most Windows computers do not like to connect to Open WiFi. and make sure it is WPA or WPA2.
Then again it may be a setting in the connection sharing like some type of MAC filtering or it may simply be that Mac OS X connection sharing only allows one connection at a time. Try disconnecting your phone and then connect the PC.
As to Linc's response about Windows.
Windows basically does care about connecting to open, unsecured, WiFi. But it will normally pop up a windows asking "Are myou sure you want to connect to this open network". And a simple click on yes will get you connected and an IP address.
So this is clearly a Mac OS X problem.

- You can only sync with one iTune library but you can manually music music and vides with different computers. To do so go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device>Set up Syncing>Sync your device manually and follow the instructions.

There isn't currently a way of seeing a list of which computers are authorised, but have you had other computers in the past and/or upgraded the OS on your computers without first deauthorising them ? Individual computers can only be deauthorised directly on them, but as you have multiple computers authorised then you can log into your account on your computer's iTunes via the Store > View Account menu option and 'deauthorise all' (which you can do once every 12 months) and you can then authorise/reauthorise the computers that you still have and need.

This happens with maybe 1 out of 5 files. These are files that have either an ."aa" extention, or or are libraries that icloud can see, but finder can't.

Files beginning with a period are invisible and library files are system files. Spotlight cannot find either unless configured to do so (btw, this is not a Finder issue but a Spotlight issue.)
Get Spotlight to search system files (and more)
Enter the search term in the Finder window's search field.
Click the [+] button in the search bar to add a search option.
In the first drop down menu choose Other.
Choose “System Files” from the list that pops up (and check the box to place in drop down menu to avoid this step later,) click on the OK button.
Now back in the Finder choose Include from the second drop down menu.

1 mac not seeing 2 others

I have 3 mac minis all running 10.5. Two of them see each other just fine. The third will not see the other two, nor can they see it. They were able to ping each other using their ip addresses. All three connect to the internet just fine. All incoming connections are allowed.
All three were freshly installed about 2 weeks ago. The only things installed since were updates and office08. One of the two good ones also had Brother Printer Control Center installed.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

For all of your freshly installed and fully update machines it is true that:
--The network card on each machine is working
--Firewalls are allowing all incoming connections
--File sharing is turned on in System preferences and at least the Public folder is being shared.
--When you ping them individually from each IP they all result in 0% packet loss
Try connecting to the AFP port from each machine.
In the terminal type:
nc [ip of target machine] 548
to see if you are able to reach the AFP at all.

SMB/CIFS share of encrypted windows directory

I have a windows 8.1 pro stand alone computer. It has one directory that is encrypted. This computer shares that directory and others with a linux computer. Just after the windows 8.1 computer reboots, linux is unable to access the encrypted directory, but
it can access other unencrypted directories. Once I log on the windows computer as a user with access to the encrypted directory, the linux computer is suddenly able access the encrypted folder. The linux computer can continue to access the encrypted directory
from linux after the user logs off the windows computer.
To be able to access the encrypted directory, I only need to log on to the windows console, i don't need to start any programs. It's as if windows cannot access some kind of key until the a user with access to the encrypted folder logs on to the windows
system from the console. I've tried many different linux command line options for opening the windows share and it doesn't seem to change the behavior. It is typically mounted with:
mount
-t cifs //192.168.1.2/efsdirectory ~/mnt --verbose -o rw,user=username,uid=1000,gid=1000
The behavior is identical if a directory above the efs directory is mounted.
I searched all of the windows event logs for errors from the failed access to the encrypted directory, but I don't see any.

if all your systems are in Domain or not.
The windows and linux computers are not on a windows domain, just the same workgroup that is named "workgroup".
Also please help confirm if "encrypted" means encrypted by EFS (or Bitlocker).
The directory that i'm trying to access is encrypted with EFS. Since this is a desktop computer, it does not use bitlocker
What's the exact username here in your command? Is it the same account as the one you logged on Windows 8.1?
the username in the unix mount command is the same one used to log onto the windows system. The linux username is different, but that's specified in the mount command with the UID and GID.
The problem occurs after a full reboot, I have disabled the windows 8.1 fast reboot 'feature'.
I'll check tonight, but is it possible that the "Encrypting file system service" is not starting when I mount the drive? Perhaps it only starts when I log on. I noticed that this service is set to 'automatic' on another (windows 7) computer.
Here's a timeline of what happens:
1) Log off of the windows computer. Reboot. (not fast boot)
2)
mount drive on linux computer
3) brouse directory structure on linux. Can open files that are not in encrypted directories. Cannot open files that are in encrypted directories.
4) log onto windows machine
5) brouse directory structure. Now I can open files that are in encrypted directories.
6) log off windows machine
7) brouse directory structure. I can still open files that are in encrypted directories.

Macs not seeing Time Capsule connected via Ethernet to router

Just bought a new Time Capsule to replace one where the hard disk failed. I have a fibre router which is my primary WiFi network and the Time Capsule is connected to that by Ethernet. The Time Capsule shows up in the Wired connections of the router so I know that the router can see the TC. I have the Time Capsule set up to supply a separate WiFi network under a different SSID for legacy purposes as I have devices that are configured to that SSID before I got my new router.
The new TC will not backup successfully unless the Macs are connected to the TC SSID, failing with the message that the Backup Disk cannot be found. This is different from the behaviour of the last TC where the Macs would see the network drive even when connected to the router SSID.
I'm sure there is a simple setting that I'm missing that would just make this work, but I can't work it out...

There are some issues which have popped up with the TC and some routers.. particularly that the WAN connection is not working correctly.
Try using one of the LAN ports on the TC and see if that helps.
Also open the Network utility in the computer and run the netstat scan .. it looks like this.
Locate the TC on the computer that is having issues.
Then ping it.. use the full domain..
eg in terminal mine is ping tcgen4.local
I think you should rename the TC to all smb names.. ie short, no spaces pure alphanumeric as it simply works better.
Then if the TC shows up in the ping, mount the hard disk manually,
In finder, Go connect to server and type
AFP://TCname.local (use the full domain name of the TC from the netstat scan).. or use the IP you get when you ping it.. although that is going to keep changing unless you can lock it.

ALL MY FILES is suddenly empty,also my MAC not seeing my printer or disc burner.

Suddenly "all my files" is empty and in "about this mac" storage no longer breaks down the types of files by color, everything is yellow indicating "Other".LION os has been fine for some time but now this, and at the same time that this occured my mac also stopped seeing my external disc burner and my printer. I have tried unplugging,rebooting,holding down power button and various other remedies suggested in forums to no avail.I can't help thinking that this is all related to something simple that I am missing and not the beginning of a major issue. I disagree with Richard, hardware is probably the last thing I would think of in this case.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but run a couple tests to help narrow it down. First, try booting in safe mode... do you still have the same problem? Also try creating a new user (in System Preferences -> Users & Groups) and logging in as that user... do you still have the same problem?

Core i3 mac not seeing power pc g4 imac in target disc mode

I'm trying to migrate my set up from a power pc g4 imac running a 10.4.11 to a core i3 imac. All the system software and firmware on the g4 imac is upto date and the mac will enter target disc mode. The macs are connected using a brand new 6 pin to 9 pin firewire cable. The iMac core i3 will not see the other mac in target disc mode. When trying the same thing using the migration assistant, migration assistant just hangs with the 'waiting for your other mac to restart'.
I'd really appreciate any help to fix the issue.

Is this the newest model with Thunderbolt? If so then see Thunderbolt 10.6 Help: Transferring files between two computers using Target Disk Mode and Intel-based Mac may become unresponsive in target disk mode.
Have you checked to be sure the drive in the G4 is configured as the Master? If it isn't, then it cannot be seen in TDM.

Pre 2010 Macs not seeing netboot images hosted on 10.6.7 server

I'm having an interesting issue where any pre-2010 Mac will not see available images hosted on OS 10.6.7 Server. Anything later than mid-2010 has no issues and sees all of the available boot images when option booting. Does anyone have any insight as to why this might be happening. I'm still searching but not having any luck.

Just a shot in the dark but is it possible you have enabled some kind of filtering under Netboot/Settings/Filters? My box to enable is unchecked.

Firefox cannot load pages that other browsers can, but the 'help' page for this issue did not fix the problem.

I am troubleshooting an issue occurring on a family member's pc. Immediately after changing their "search" settings from "Yahoo search" to "Google search", they found that Firefox was unable to load any webpages. After troubleshooting the problem, I found the "Firefox can't load websites but other browsers can" help page, and attempted each of the solutions listed. None of those solutions fixed the issue. Also, I uninstalled and re-installed Firefox; the issue persists. However, the 'new' version of Firefox remembered the tabs left open when the 'old' version was deleted, so some temporary files likely persisted.
Are there any other steps that can be taken, or is Firefox on this computer no longer an option?
