Mac not sending signal to external monitor

Hi, I have a 2010 Macbook pro and I'm trying to use my acer monitor as an external for additional desktop space. I've done it before (about a year ago) and it worked perfectly fine, but for some reason when I plug in the cable (it's a DVI) it just lights up my monitor which says no signal, and the mac screen turns blue (as if it were going to readjust the screen for another monitor), but then it just goes back to the normal desktop. I can't move the mouse off screen and the monitor displays nothing. Any ideas?

Sorry I couldn't figure out how to edit the above, but I forgot to mention that after unplugging and plugging it in several times I actually got the monitor to work and display things and I dragged some stuff over to it, but there was a dialogue box about displays I couldn't close and when i clicked "detect monitors" it ended up shutting it down again and I haven't seen it work since.

  • MacBook not sending signal to external display - was working fine before.

hi guys, i have a unibody macbook and i've been hooking it up to my tv for almost 2 years now using the mini display port to hdmi adapter and hdmi to my television.
tonight the macbook randomly stopped sending signals to the tv. i tried two tvs with two different display adapters as well as a DVI monitor.
the displays are detected in osx but there is just no signal sending to it. anyone have any ideas? did my mini display port just die? i've tried several cables/adapters.

    Hey,
I just experienced a similar problem as the original poster, except that I'm using a minidisplayport - DVI adapter and not HDMI. Been working fine on my external screen for 2 months now and suddenly the external says no signal?
Macbook still flashes a blue screen when plugging in the adapter but does not detect the external. Haven't ruled out that the adapter is busted yet, but worked fine earlier.
I tried resetting the PRAM without any change.
Any kind of software / hardware problems on the macbook?
    Any thoughts?

  • Mini Displayport to DVI Adapter not sending signal to DVI Monitor

I have a dell monitor connected to my Thunderbolt Display that will not get a signal.  The component string looks like this
MBP - Thunderbolt Display- Mini Displayport to DVI adapter- Dell 22" DVI monitor.
I would like to use this monitor as a third monitor instead of collecting dust.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • New ENVY PC is not sending signal to second monitor. Need a fix.

Hi everyone, how do I get a second monitor to work on a new HP ENVY H8 1420T with Windows 8. As far as I can tell the PC recognizes the second monitor but no signal is received/sent at/to the second monitor. This model has two DVI ports, the second, I presume, both are for monitors. The second DVI connector requires an adapter for the VGA connector from the monitor.
    Thanks for your help

Have you tested if there's a signal if you use only the second monitor at boot up?
And you don't have a additional graphics card installed, right?

Lol, figured out the first part. Just for those who may be searching, when you click on the Display Preferences, and click on the arraingment tab... it not only shows where your two screens will be displayed, but the WHITE BAR at the top of one screen is the dock/toolbar. Click and hold to grab this and just slide it over to the screen you'd like it to be on.
You have to release it IN the screen box, not on top of it... and it should pop right over to the new (or old) screen. At any rate, you can put the dock on either (or any) screen that you prefer.
I am thinking of ordering more of these. Lol. 3 monitor setup seems like it would be crazy good.
Still looking for the answer to keeping the new 16" screen on the right without switching between screen #s with that... not expose... Lion feature.
Thanks. Hope my other question has an answer out here.

  • HT1338 the Macbook Pro would not even detect the external monitor.

My Macbook pro will not connect to an external monitor after moving it. It has been running on this same monitor for 8 months. I switched to a new Desk last night, after hooking it up, the Macbook Pro would not even detect the external monitor. It was only showing the Macs monitor in Display. It did not even have where you could "Detect Display" available. Is there an update that I may have missed. I have tested all the Monitor connections with another laptop they all work.

finally I would like to know if my computer falls under
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
If nothing displays but you hear normal startup sounds, then it's possible this is a video issue, and you should take it to an Apple store or AASP.

  • Is there anyway to have an 11 inch mac air connected to an external monitor with lid closed and still be able to see content. I have a wireless ketboard and mouse and have tried everything. Only works when plugged in.

You are referring to a feature called Clamshell Mode, please read Clamshell Mode setup for instructions.
BTW when posting when you use generalities such as "have tried everything" this tells us nothing. When posting please be specific and try to paint a complete picture. It just makes things easier for those trying to help you.

  • Mac powerbook g4 15" Auminum, on startup has a black screen and no signal to external monitor

    Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz 15" Aluminum
After watching a dvd, I turned the laptop off and closed the lid before the screen was completely dark. I also forgot to take the dvd out. The next day I get a start up chime and a black screen. Will not work with external monitor. Will not let me do pram reset as I couldn't see the picture anyway. Hard drive appears to be fine. I tried swapping the two ram modules. Took the lower one out and still no results. My main question is, before I just geek out and put a new logic board in, what are the possible loose connection  (cables) causes?

This issue is not unfamiliar among PowerPC G4 users, in desktop or portable models.
The cause may vary and so when looking through incidents of a similar nature, try to
be patient and get past duplicate-sounding experiences as referenced by the sources.
There are more than a few in this search thread that sound like your situation:
    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=powerbook+g4+black+screen+on+startup
Depending on the PowerBook model, some have clock battery/capacitor on logic board
that once it fails, there can be startup issues as a result... So that's one to check. And
then there are the connections that may have come loose on the logic board, over years
of handling and small movement, these could finally have failed to contact finally. Or the
DC-in Board may have chosen to fail, so power may be unable to get past a circuit.
Troubleshooting based on a few symptoms can be... troublesome, tedious; or costly.
The iFixit.com guides have sections where people asked questions, such as:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/131619/PowerBook+g4+has+startup+chime+no+ima ge
The keyboard shortcuts to attempt to force a computer to start may be of no avail if
the hardware has defects, or if wires have come off their necessary junctions inside.
If you have time and some money, companies who specialize in repairing Apple
portable computers could restore its function & warranty their work. wegenermedia
is worth contacting if the computer is one you want to keep around while. They did
a repair for me on one of my Apple portables, and I'd probably go that route again.
So, anyway, if the unit uses a clock or PRAM battery, it may need replacement.
Or in another direction, issue could be a power related circuit failure; or worse.
There are graphic display components that fail at a point where an external &
internal display both won't light up. These are mapped out in iFixit guides or in
others online, depending on the model G4 PowerBook they show.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 10.5.2 won't send signal to external projector

Help! I do speaking engagements for a living and just updated to 10.5.2. When I hook an external projector to the computer (DVI to VGA) my MacBook Pro does see the external projector, but will not send a signal to it. It worked yesterday, but as soon as I upgraded it no longer works. We tried a second Mac running 10.5.1 and it worked fine.
I have an engagement Wednesday evening and MUST have this fixed or I will be forced to buy a new computer. Don't have system disks to go backwards with updates. Anybody have any ideas? What a nightmare. I'm desperate to have a computer that will send a video signal out. It sees a monitor, but doesn't see the projector.

    Howdy chadnodoubt,
If you are having an issue with your external display not performing as expected when connected with your MacBook Pro, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • Mini Displayport to vga adapter on MacBook pro 13" late 2011. No signal on external monitor

    Hi
Connecting a Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" to an external monitor, trough mini Dispalyport to vga adapter, i see "no signal" messagge on external monitor, even if i get it as secondary monitor on Preferences > Monitor of my MacBook it's visible (i can change resolution, position, clone screen, ecc.).
Any suggestion? somebody found the same problem?

    Hi
i did what you said and tried with other resolution/refresh rate combinations, also with anoter external monitor (and vga cable) but its still the same: monitor is detected but there's no signal.
Now I will try to chek if the adapter works on other pc and monitor.
    Thanks
(anyway it was the firs time i connect this mac to an external monitor)

  • No Signal to External Monitor

I use KDE and have a HP ProBook 6560b with a dock/port replicator.  My problem is that signal to my external monitor doesn't automatically work on login rather it be via VGA or DVI (currently hooked up over DVI).  I tinkered around with it and got it to work sometimes but not consistently.
Edit:  This also seems to happen in Gnome using Gnome's display config tool.
That aside, my even bigger issue is when I click KRandRTray down in the system tray and change the display settings to what I want, my external monitor goes to sleep and says "no signal."  The settings I want are for my laptop's attached LCD panel (LVDS1) to be "Disabled" (since I keep my laptop lid closed in the dock) and I want my externally attached monitor (HDMI2) to be set to 1680x1050 (Auto).  The even stranger part of this is I can eventually get this to work if I start it dual monitor, pick my secondary external monitor (HDMI2) and set it's resolution to 1680x1050 (Auto), set primary display to HDMI2, hit apply then go back in and set LVDS1 to "Disabled" and hit apply again.
To add to this, if at any point in time the external monitor goes to "no signal" mode and the settings restore after the countdown, the external monitor will never show signal until I drop out to a console and killall X and it restarts KDM, etc.
I don't have any Xorg.conf (or config files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d) that relates to video settings.
The following is my graphics card that is integrated into my Core i5:

Since this is a multi-part problem I guess my initial task is to understand why going directly to disabling the laptop's LCD and setting my external monitor to 1680x1050 (Auto) doesn't work without going through the other steps.

First step would be to create the necessary entries (easier to make a complete xorg.conf versus xorg.conf.d/##-whatever.conf).
All Desktop Environments / Window Managers rely on X.  Man pages are helpful, possibly some headaches ahead as I fought a dual-monitor display this way.
I currently run a xrandr script to switch displays on my hp pavilion: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xrandr#Scripts
    Check it out.

  • Resolution 1920x1080 not available for an external monitor

    Hi,
I've just bought a Tv Lcd + Monitor 24 Samsung P2470hn, I have a DisplayPort to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI cable to the monitor. But when a I go to System Preferences -> Displays, I only have resolutions up to 1600x900. The monitor supports 1920x1080 but it isn't available. What I'm doing wrong? Could it be the DVI to HDMI cable? The monitor has a DVI input.
One weird thing is that when I go to System Profiler -> Graphics/Displays I see that the external monitor has this
    SyncMaster:
    Resolution: 1600 x 900 @ 60 Hz
    Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Rotation: Supported
    Television: Yes
Note the last item "Television: Yes" could be that the problem? if so how can I change it?
    Thanks
    Gabriel

I find it very annoying that I have to use MiniDisplay Port to VGA to get 1366x768 or 1920x1080 resolution options in the Display Control Pane. If I use MiniDisplay Port to HDMI, I get some old common resolutions, (some weird ones too like 1344x1024) as well as 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. 1080p would be great, except this is more of a "TV" video input rather than a "PC" monitor input, I either get overscan or underscan (depending on the "Overscan" check box).
Why, especially since it's all digital with HDMI, doesn't Apple include nice 1:1 Pixel mapping using HDMI? It's very frustrating! I've noticed some, (generally more expensive HDTVs, like my 63" Samsung Plasma), HDTVs will do "Just Scan" (as opposed to "OverScan" or "UnderScan") then the 1080p with HDMI works beautifully.
All of my VIZIO TVs, I have to use the VGA to get 1:1 Pixel mapping. At least, with a high quality VGA cable (even my 25 foot one from MonoPrice.com that would cost 10 times more at a local store) does convert back to digital (for LCD panel) without noticeable noise and pixel shifting (or ghosting, which I've seen with cheap VGA cables, weird, seeing analog distortions on a digital LCD display, but hey, bad analog in -bad analog looking image out). Plus, unless you have the newest Macs with audio supported through the MiniDisplay Port, you can only get the TV speakers to work with the "PC" VGA input and the "PC" audio input (3.5mm stereo phono jack) next to it. With an HDMI input, the TV will look for audio in the HDMI source and not from the "PC" audio input.

here everything seems to be fine. krandrtray also shows that external monitor is operative.
after rebooting computer both monitors work, but i can't change brightness on lvds.
i'm running archlinux, but the same results were on fedora, ubuntu and mint. there is no such problem on windows xp.
maybe it is not supported yet for Core Processor Integrated Graphics, but i couldn't find such information.

external monitor becomes a copy of LVDS1(according to xrandr) but monitor's screen is still black.
