Mac on a desk mount...

Ok, this might seem a bit odd. I also admit this thread isn't specifically related to the new Mac Pros, but to any modern tower Macs (or computers) in general: Is it possible that the harddrive is being damaged if you have the Mac (Pro, G5, whatever) sit on a desk mount? I mean the kind of mount that hangs from below the desk as sold f.e. by ikea. These mounts shake slightly when you accidently bump at the desk. Is that reason to worry?

You'll have to bump in to it incredibly hard to damage the hard drive. Modern drives can handle some vibration. I've got my Mac Pro suspended below my desk, hanging from the two "handles". I've only had it for two or three months, but it is still fine... (I did replace my boot drive with SSDs, but I've still got the hard drive in there for storage...)
It is better than when it was still standing on the floor. It was constantly sucking up dust and being hit by the wheels from my chair...

  • Desk mounted articulated arm for 24" iMac?

    Hi Everyone,
Can anyone recommend a desk mounted, height adjustable articulated arm that's suitable for the 24" iMac, please? Must be available in the UK. This could be the clincher between an iMac and a MBP - and i'm looking to order next week!
Any bad experiences with fitting the Apple VESA Mount?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have used glass topped desks, I don't think apart from possibly getting broke by accident they are good at absorbing vibrations from keyboard or maybe even the Mac itself..I invested in a nice oak table, centre iMac -> Right, Printer -> Left, 2 x External HD's..plus lots of space for card readers/documents/office & cell phones etc etc etc... I have a small filing cabinet under the desk..works for me.
    Don't forget a ""comfortable chair"" ------- happy key tapping...L

  • G5 Under Desk Mount hardware recommendation...

I am looking for a reliable Under Desk Mount solution for our G5's for a lab where I work and support the Mac's at a local college. Any recommendations or companies that might be good for these heavy systems? Thank you!!!
    Doug Renz

Marathon was the only company I've ever seen make an underdesk mount for a G5, so unless you get lucky and find a dealer with that many in stock (highly unlikely that any dealer would have stocked that many), the "hanger" type mount is probably not going to be an option.
You might be able to find a clamp-type undermount that would work, though we didn't have good luck with clamp-type mounts and G5s. This type of CPU sling might also work; just make sure it's tall enough to handle a G5.
    Good luck.

  • Will there be an Ergotron MX Desk Mount arm for the IPAD 2?

Having trouble finding a functional AND attractive clamping desk mount for a drafting table (which sits at an incline). The Ergotron is pefect but only made for computer monitors. After having researched this for a couple of weeks, Im here to tell you guys at Apple that there is a BIG hole in the market for IPad clamping desk mounts that arent ugly and cumbersom. This Ergontron in an IPad format would sell bazillions!

tdog10000, I work at Ergotron. We are just launching information on a new Universal Tablet Cradle, part number 80-106-085 for $39. It will attach to any mount with VESA. Find on ergotron.com in accessories category. Will be available later in June.

  • Mac Pro unable to mount etc. blank cd / dvd but reads cd's/DVD's with data

First ... sorry my bad English!
My Mac Pro is unable to mount blank cd's/dvd's but can read+mount cd's/dvd's with data??
It happends with my internal drive and with my Lacie external drive so it is not "hardware" problem.
I think this started after uppdates (security etc.)
    I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.4.
But still I'm able to burn with my Toast software cd's dvd's although cds are not mounted???or seen in finder???
    -SsoundD

Start the program you are using to burn the discs, and when you are about to burn them, it will tell you to insert a blank CD/DVD to be burned.
Mac OS X cannot mount Blank CD/DVD, since it does not have any Mac File Structures on it.

  • Mac Pro no longer mounts external usb devices

    Hi there,
Last week my mac pro stopped mounting my ipod shuffle as a disk (i was using it like a usb memory stick), i thought it was a problem with the shuffle and left it aside. But just yesterday the mac stopped mounting my external lacie 500gb disk. I had never had any problems before this.
I then tried both the shuffle and external hd on my powerbook g4. They work perfectly!
I then thought it might have been a problem with the usb ports on the mac pro - although all my other usb devices were still working - so i booted into xp with bootcamp, and the devices were recognised in xp perfectly.
After searching various threads on different forums the general idea for this problem seemed to be to reinstall osx, which i have just done, and no joy. Im still not able to mount either of these devices.
System profiler sees the devices, but thats it.
Also, i recently bought a new usb memory stick (as i thought the shuffle was dead), this mounts and works perfectly!
    Anyone got any ideas?!
    Thanks

Yes, i did the combo update immediatly after reinstalling osx and before pluggin in the usb device.
The problem developed just before the release of 10.4.9, so i dont think it was the update that did it.
I've only just got this MP back from Apple. The PSU had to be replaced. It took them nearly 3 weeks to do

  • How do I get my Mac Book Pro desk top back to the right size?

My son was using my Mac Book Pro this morning and managed to enlarge both the desk top and any browser I use - Safari, Firefox etc.  I am unable to get them back to the right size and have to keep shifting across to see what files I have etc.  Can anyone give me advice on how to put it back to normal.  I have tried looking at 'view options' and also in trackpad, mouse and keyboard in preferences but to no avail.  Note that the files on the desk top are not smaller or bigger - it is the actual desktop which has increased in size and is no longer contained within the frame of the screen.  Would be grateful for any help and thank you.

Did you try CONTROL and two finger drag on the trackpad?
    Ciao.

  • Keep iPod Touch 2G connected to Mac when at desk?

When I'm using my iPod Touch 2G at my desk, should I keep it plugged into my Mac?
After the battery is charged to 100%, is the iPod running off the power from the Mac
or is it running off the battery?
Which will make the battery last longer?
    1. Keeping it plugged into the Mac
    or
    2. Unplugging it after the battery is 100% charged?

It doesn't matter. When the battery is fully charged, it will stop charging. When the Touch is plugged into the computer it's using power from the computer.

  • USB Flash Drive is seen by Mac but will not mount

I use an HP 32GB flash drive, formatted exFAT, to transfer files. My Windows PC and other MacBooks in my house running older Mac OS X versions read this flash drive just fine. This flash drive used to show up on the desktop of my newest MacBook Pro 15 (late 2011) too.
However, after upgrading to 10.7.5 I experienced numerous problems (Time Machine, etc.) and the USB Drive fails to mount onto the desktop or be recognized by any application. I cannot get Apple's Disk Utility to recognize the flash drive either.
    Interestingly enough
    1. The System Information window of my MacBook Pro shows the USB drive when it is attached. The Mac even knows it is an HP 32GB drive. But Disk Tools does not see it, I cannot format or read it in any other way on this Mac.
    2. when I launch Windows 7 OS through Parallels, then install the USB drive, these applications too fail to recognize the flash drive. But if I pull out the USB flash drive then a screen appears for a split-second, as though somehow the MacBook Pro knew the drive had been pulled.
Moments ago I downloaded the OS X 10.7.5 supplment "Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)", but while that may have fixed Time Machine, I see no changes to the USB drive recognition.
    Any ideas?

iDVD '11 works on Mountain Lion.  You just need to get an old iLife '11 DVD.

  • 10.4.4 updated fine-now mac HD won't mount

Help, I have run startup disk from DVD then disk utility disk repair. The DU shows Macintosh HD Repaired & permissions repaired and mounted volume. However, when I reboot, there is no Macintosh HD on the desktop. I can go to finder, recent folders to open Macintosh HD and it is right there in the 2nd column but not on the left side where it should be in the window or on the desktop. Everything runs the way it should but if I need to look in systems I have to open finder, recent folders.
What can I do to mount the disk volumn on the desktop. My second internal drive is there as is my Omega firewire drive.
I should add that at first, all disk volumes were on the desktop for a couple of days. I rebooted for some reason and that is when I noticed the Mac HD was gone.
I reinstalled 10.4.4 combo this time and did repair disk/permissions. What I noticed after updating to combo was all the crazy widgets permission repairs disappeared. Alas, no Mac HD volumn.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Chris

After following your instructions, there were 3 icons plus network & IDisk. I Then made an alias of the Mac HD as you advised and put that on the desktop. I rebooted and did disk repair again but to no avail even though the alias was on the desktop and did work. The service dept at Apple said to bring in the Mac & they would backup my whole computer to my firewire to be saved and go from there to take a good look. It is under the Apple Care Warranty thank goodness so all the service for 10.4.4 & Quicktime 7.4 screwups will be covered.
I have a feeling there is a corrupt file lurking around especially reading all the threads about missing apps etc. Hope there is an upgrade 10.4.5 to take care of all this, it doesn't sit well with all the loyal customers.
I will post again after I get the results probably next week.
Thanks again Rich, it is very assuring to know that readers take the time to assist any way they can, and you told me everything I was to do according to Apple when I spoke to them. In fact they were impressed with you, nice to know, right!
I am now using my pc laptop, what a difference. I'm having terrible Mac withdrawals!

  • Mac mini won't mount in Firewire target mode

I connect one non-booting Mac mini to one working Mac mini and tried to get the data off the non-booting one, but it won't mount.
When I try to repair the disk using the Disk Utility from the working mini, it says:
    Verify and Repair disk “disk1s3”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid node structure
    Invalid node structure
Catalog file entry not found for extent
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because
    of an error
How can I get my data off the computer. I can reinstall the OS, but I have data in Application Data folder that I want to save too. Also, does Archive install save the whole user directory including Application Data?
I also have some files made in GarageBand saved in the Music folder.
I hope that someone can help me!

If Disk Utility cannot repair the drive then you may want to consider investing in a product like Alsoft's DiskWarrior…
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
Given your symptoms I doubt you'll be able to do anything at all, barring an erase and install, in the drive until you get the disk repaired.

  • Mac mini won't mount hard drive on start up

My mac mini was shut dow for a week while on vacation.  Upon return I tried to start up and hard drive won't mount.  I can hear it make repeated attempts but it won't engage.

Actually I think there may have been a power outage while I was gone, but the computer was shut down.  Could this be a factor?
I do not get any boot choices it just keeps cycling the initial disk start-up prior to the chime.  I'll try starting with the Option or alt key down.

  • My Lacie backup desk mounts/unmounts after I Upgraded to Lion?  Any ideas?

I just upgraded to Lion.  Now my Lacie Backup disk repeatedly mounts and unmount which means my Time Machine fails.  The Lacie software also no longer works.  This is a pretty old disk 6 years.  Not sure what I should do to troubleshoot the issue.

This could be the sign of a failing disk. What does Disk Utility > Repair Disk report?
I'd get rid of the LaCie software and get a good backup program like
    SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner
Then, I'd reformat the disk, clone your system to it and see how it runs after that.
Also, if you're starting up with the disk connected, wait until your Mac starts up then power up the disk and "hot plug" it into your Mac port.

  • Getting Aperture pre-sets from mac book to desk top

I just recently got a mac desk top and I just installed Aperture form the App Store. My mac book has several pre-sets that I have either purhcased or created. How do I get those presets to transfer from Aperture on my mac book to Aperture on my desk top???

You presets are either installed in the system library folder  "/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins"
for example, the onOne presets are installed in
    /Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/Edit/onOne Presets.AdjustmentPresets
and presets I created myself will be in the corresponding folder in my user library
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/AdjustmentPresets.plist
Copy the files from these folders tothe corresponding folders on your new mac.
You user library may still be hidden, as is the default in Mavericks: To open your hidden user library:
Select the "Home" folder icon (the little house)  in the Finder's sidebar and press the key combination ⌘J to open the "view options".
    Enable "Show Library Folder".
Then open the Home folder and open the Library folder inside and navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture

  • Mac Pro in Desk will it get too hot?

Hi I'll be receiving my Mac Pro on the 27th of March. I will be placing it inside my desk (not by choice as I have no other place to put it) It's surrounded on all three sides, there's no door, the front is completely open, Would it get too hot for my Mac Pro? Would it be best to cut an opening in the back of the desk behind the computer? Thanks

Would the computer be ok if I plugged in an external usb powered fan and have it blow the heat out?
Would something like this do the trick?
